Well its a headphone unit with just a couple of sliding switches on it for chorus or echo or both. Also has clean and distortion settings. Very simple and it sounds great.

I have always wanted an amp that sounded like this unit does. I wanted a nice clean and real smooth distortion. I have never found both in the same amp. I love the sound of this thing. I bought this unit brand new (even though T. Scholz and company had gone out of business years before) just a few years ago along with a new ROCKMOUNT unit that the Rockman plugs into. These items were collecting dust in an old music store. I plugged the unit into the Rockmount and from there into an EQ and then into a STEREO POWER AMP and then into two Celestion loaded Thiele cabinets. WOW! What can I say. Boston landed in my livingroom. Don't use the unit as a preamp into your guitar amp or through an effects loop. It WILL sound like shit. The ONLY way to amp this thing is through a stereo power amp. I tried it with a Mesa Boogie 20-20 and finally settled on a Carvin 75W unit that had a loudness feature. It definitely sounded better with the Carvin. If you do buy a Rockmount off Ebay for one of these I would suggest you put a power switch in the front of the unit. I put a submini $2 switch in so I would not have to use the on-off slider on the Rockman. That by the way is the only bad thing I can say about these units are the somewhat noisy and scratchy sliding switches they use. I use the chorus on all the time pretty much as I do run it stereo but don't use the echo option much as its not adjustable and I am not that crazy about the quality of it. I run an American Hot Rodded Strat with a Pearly Gates Plus and two Texas Specials through it.

Never has given me a problem. The only thing that might crap out are the switches, but not yet!

Well as you know Tom Scholz sold his stuff to Dunlop and like another user pointed out...his head engineer went to Dunlop as well. I will go one better though. The guys name is Bob Cedro. So if you have an old Rockman ANYTHING, this guy will fix it. I have talked to Dunlop just recently to ask them if they ever plan on releasing any of Scholz's other stuff, namely the XPR and he said no. I also asked him about support for the XPR if I bought one off Ebay and it ever had a problem and he said they will fix them. He also said they rarely came in. Thats how well built his stuff was.

this isn't hard to use, It has Distortion/Edge/Clean1/Clean2 Also has Normal/chorus off/echo off (when in normall you play both chorus and echo)also has a 3 setting switch for volume (like quiet, normal and loud) it also has 2 headphones out, guitar in, and a Aux In/Low level out (servers both purposes!)

This is a Headphone Amp.. Okay the clean is very glossy i will agree with most people on that category.. But i also believe differen't guitars get a tad different sound.. But anwyays its a headphone amp all its supposed to do is amplify your sound so you can play late at night ect ect..
Now the edge and distortion channels are WONDERFUL! i am a huge boston fan. and i collect the rockman rackmounts.. but this baby does a GREAT job of getting a good boston sound without all the racks.. granted its not as ajustable.. but this baby sounds GOOD! i love the sounds i get with it.. sweet sustain and warm distortion just like boston! Think of the STar spangled banner, You can get that EXACTLY on this baby.. this isn't the same sound as debut boston album tho, thats a VERY hard crisp crunch.. this is about the second album and onwards for distortion...

I've only had it a few days.. and its used.. but it seems to be okay.. Although with most of the rockman stuff i have.. the switches are quite wierd.. they are kind of sticky and a bit tuff to move at first.. and sometimes its hard to get it right in the nich so it makes the full sound.. but this little puppy doesnt have that problem.. Yet anyways.. Is that a big problem? Heck no!

I love this thing..and for only about 30 to 40 bucks for them they are a GREAT value! its great for playing at night.. and being able to get nice distorted tones and harmonics.. I bought mine with the ROCKADAPTER included so i can play forever! although i'm missing the battery cover for the unit thats fine.. if you have one i'll buy it! i am also probably going to get another rockman x100 or 2 becuase they are just wonderfull.. This is not for everyone but if you love bostons tone and would like to have it portable.. this is IT! I'm actually playing it right now as i write this! The sound on this box is great.. and it clips to your belt/pants.. It looks like it uses 8 AA batteries when you are using batteries.. no idea if it gobbles them up or not.. but i assume not.. If anyone has a spare rockman x-100 thats in really good condition drop me a line i may still be intersted in buying another!! :)

Amazingly simple to use... it's practically all switches anyway and all of the inputs and outputs are clearly marked. If you can't figure this thing out... maybe you shouldn't be playing guitar. Mine runs on eight AA batteries... or a generic power adapter (1/8" connection) No manual.. I bought it used... but somehow I don't think you'll need it.

Okay.. here's the deal. I have been happily playing a Peavey Predator, into a Digitech Rp-7 and through a Peavey Envoy 110 amp. Well, being a BOSTON fan, I decided to pick up a used Rockman X-100 and see how it sounded. I tried it initially through headphones and it sounded good... but I was eager to hear it through a 10" speaker. After hearing many complaints about how noisy the X-100 was through any open amp, I was a little worried. Well, I plugged it in directly to the amp and... YUCK... I got sounds that God never intended... hell birds started crashing into the window! I was a little dispondent, but I had an idea... why not try plugging it into the RP-7, putting the RP-7 on BYPASS mode, and going into the amp from there? Guess what? It worked... Crystal clear sound... clean, distorted, you name it. The tone this little guy makes is absolutely INCREDIBLE!!!!! Anyone looking for a BOSTON sound or the like (i.e. Def Leppard, etc.) or wants a pretty '80s tone... this thing nails it. Nicest sounding tones (clean and distorted) that I've found (granted not much variation though... it's got 4 settings for distortion: 2 clean, edge and distortion). But I don't mind, I have my RP-7 around to create everything else... this is the tone I've been searching for. Anytime I want it.. there it is.

Hmmmm.... I have no idea.. I've only had it for a day and I bought it used. It's lasted this long before it got to me... so it can't be doing too badly. I've heard people having difficulty with the connections on the inputs and outputs... I could definately see this happening... but so far mine looks to be okay.

Yeah right! Unless you have Tom Scholz's home phone number it isn't going to happen.

Excellent piece of equipment for myself. I am a die-hard BOSTON maniac, so it's nice to fianlly get that tone... not to mention doing it with an item designed and built by my guitar idol himself (Tom Scholz). The X-100 will be awesome for recording... just plug right into a computer, tape deck, you name it... more than likely that will generate the purest sound. Happily I have it playing superbly through my amp as well, and the headphones also sound great. It's portable and light, so it's a take anywhere sort of an item. Damn thing even has a belt clip... I could literally go for a walk around the block and play the guitar all the while. Surely this is not the item for everyone... and granted it doesn't have a great deal of variable for the sound... but that's not why I bought it. I already have an effects processor (RP-7). I wanted that particular sound. To anyone looking to get one, my advice would be to use it in conjunction with an effects processor, that way you aren't limited to the sound, but's it's there when you want it. I honestly think that everyone complaining about how loud it is thorugh an amp just gave up too soon. If it were stolen, broken, or lost I would try to find another one in a second. Heck, I'm already looking to buy another one to have as a back-up. Should anyone be selling one, please contact me.

A little noisy. Don't play it through your amp, sounds like crap. Works well as direct in for a tape deck or computer. Pretty good through a PA as well.

Had the unit for over 10 years now. Seems to have a noise problem with some outputs. Wiggling fixes it. I know another guy who has the exact same problem. Manufacturing defect or coincidence? Still works pretty well though.

A few months ago I would have given it a zero. Just because I had no use for it with my amp. I was going to sell it but now I won't part with it. Now that I got a computer and can record with it, it makes a great direct in box. Nice variety of tones, small and out of the way. I guess it was a little ahead it's time for me to find some use for it.

This served a niche in the studio, I was looking for a unit that would go direct to board that would "condition" the signal inexpensively. It also works very good on a gig with a Boogie amp when I want to travel light.
