I use this now with a Boss SD-1 and a Rocktron Silver Dragon. If I set this up right, I can a more controllable and meaner sound of what the Slayer channel of the Silver Dragon does. I can also use this alone, with an overdrive, or whatever I choose. Great pedal for the price for a versatile and quiet pedal. Worth a look, and definitely worth the price.

It's powerful and tight. Artificial harmonies go out real easy, and power chords sound very nice to. It has enough gain althou I use booster in front of it. My setup is Jackson DK27 (DiMarzio pickups) -> Boss BD-2 -> Rcktron Rampage -> Hi-Fi :) Sounds real nice + I can record direct. It's the quietest distortion I have ever used. I've been through Marshall JH-1, Boss MT-2, Ibanez deathmetal and it's the quietest of them all.

I think it's pretty easy to use. The e.q. is very active. The tonal variations are pretty wide. Lot's of different sounds can be achieved. This is the silver one. I don't know of any differences between the blue one and the silver one.

Sounds great in my humble opinion. But distortion is very subjective. One man's treasure is another's garbage. I play a gretsh or gibson into a Laney VC30. It's not noisy at all and believe me I own a Colorsound overdriver so I know what noisy is. I play a dirty punk flavored kind of rock and roll ala Lee Harvey Oswald Band, Hellacopters, Gaza Strippers or Daisy Chainsaw. It's perfect for that. There is more than enough gain for my tastes.

I've owned a Lovetone big cheese, SIB varidrive, the silver tuna can distortion box, some Colorsound stuff and a couple of other high priced distortion boxes, and I like this pedal the best out of all of them. And it's cheap too. It's not a fuzz either. I can play a b9 and hear every note.

It is the best sounding pedal I have ever heard! The only problem is that it dosen't have enough gain! I use this pedal in the external effects loop in my boss gt3. It sounds "real" compared to the digital crap out there today. The scope knob makes it easy to get the mid tones right. I always have to use a graphic eq pedal to get the tone I won't but this thing get's it with out it. I use a Behringer ultra metal as a boster to give it a kick. The tone is just great, even using digital equipment with it. If you play new metal and you suck and want a distortion that covers up your flaws don't get this. If you want tone that dosen't sound like a fuzz box went plam muting and don't mind to use a booster for solos this is the pedal for you.

Think of metal as beign Old Slayer,Exodus,Metallica and you will hear this pedal. I love and hate this pedal at the same time! It sounds so real and raw and I love it! At the same time It lets me know what I need to work on and it sucks! I use at my main sound with a booster and use it to practice to hear what I need work on. If it were stolen I would try something new just becuase of who I am. This pedal has made so "digital modeling aware" that I will never use digital modeling distortion again in my life! Althought this pedal sounda great and sound great with a booster you can't do this in reverse. The pedal is not a good choice to use as a booster for another pedal or amp.

I gave this an 8 for ease of use because it is pretty simple but the eq takes some fiddling.

I play this into a (cough) digitech rp50 into a (cough cough) 500 Watt home stereo system and then into my homemade 4x10 guitar cabinet.
On the RP50 I leave MODELLING TURNED OFF!! - Just for effects! So I get as much Genuine Distortion cutting through with the least amount of DiGiTaL-ness
I also play this into my age old Airline 1x12 Tube amp but only on occasion.
I also mic these into our 2600 Watt PA System....very sweet sound.
The sound this gives is great! I used to own a Rocktron gainiac and this sounds VERY similar to it. The gainiac was hybrid solid state/tube and the Rampage sounds a little more, gritty, or something. Probably slightly better for sound metal songs.
I use a boss sd-1 super overdrive to boost this and that works great.
The thing about this is, I can only get good lead tones with the scoop way down, and good riff tones with the scoop way up...so there's a little conflict for different parts of my songs.
Fortunatly I have more pedals to compensate this in a live situation. (overdrives, boosters, or post-distortion tube simulators)
All around it is a GREAT pedal, but in my opinion, it should not be your only distortion because, it doesn't do "basic" distortion very well. I can get exceptional Grunge, Speed Metal, Shred, and some great classic rock leads out of this but I have a hard time just getting like...i dunno...a Creed "higher" distortion. It's hard to explain but if you hear it you'll know what I mean.
This rocks..although I think this pedal might sound better with 12" speakers as opposed to my 4x10" cab, still rocks though.
Anyone want some sound clips??? email me : kjt777@excite.com

With my setup, it's extremely easy to get a good sound out of this, and not just one, but many great sounds. It is a little nasally sounding, but compared to the thick bassy sound of the metal planet, this pedal is the opposite end of the spectrum. By the way, using these two pedals together adds more tonal abilities (using one or the other, or both together.) The manual for it is weak though... just says what the knobs and the inputs/outputs do.

Hamer Flametop Vector -> ROCKTRON RAMPAGE (-> Rocktron Metal Planet) -> Peavey Rockmaster 120w tube head, H&K Warp7 100w ss head, or a crap 30 w Drive amp. The heads then go into a Laney 2x12 recto cab with celestions in it. Being as ultra-highgain as it is, it is a little noisy, but its more a better representation of what you play noisy, than stop playing and instant feedback noisy. The distortion always sounds nice and chainsaw like, so with an EL84 head, it sounds wonderful. But even on the two SS amps, its great as well. With the metal planet, it has tons of tonal abilities, but even alone its still versitile in the high gain section as far as the scoop goes. I can get, very easily, a Children of Bodom sound, mainly I get a very marshall and peavey (5150 especially) sound in terms of it having a high mids emphasis. I can also get a System of a Down sound quite easily, and CFH Pantera as well. Metallica and Megadeth sounds are quite easy as well, none of the above ideas of the tone this has are hard to get, just takes some fiddling.

I play metal music exclusively. This is a really good match, since I think it was made for metal. I've been playing three years and I think a newbie could find a good sound out of this, unless they have the brain of a fly. I compared it to the Ibanez SM-7 Tone Lok Smash Box, and this is a complete improvement on that horrible pedal as the Metal Planet is to the Metal Zone (Metal Planet owns the Zone.)

Well... I've got an overall a very positive experience with this unit. It's pretty easy to achieve a good sound. It's a solid state, but in my opinion one of the best solid state preamps out there!
I'll give it 9, because you should actually play with it for a while to get used to it, as it is by every other effect pedal.

I plug my MARTINEZ DAYTONA guitar a full tube 50 WATT CRATE amp with the cheapest BEHRINGER 4x12 box.
The pedal does get pretty noisy like every other heavy metal distortion. It's not nice, but probably the only general solution is an extra noise gate.
This little heavy metal monster has a great sound! If you just play the chords or something easy, it's rather neutral, but when you start with a solo, you will hear every note, every nuance, every motion!
You don't hear any digital-bums-krams, but just what you play! Excellent!

I play heavy metal in a band. It fits the sound pretty well, it does its job. I have no complaints so far. If it were stolen I'd probably by a ROCKTRON SILVER DRAGON to get more possibilities or two sounds and not one, but it does not mean that I have any dislikes about this pedal. It's nice, cheap and you can really turn the world upside down with it.
I've owned a lot of other stuff as DIGITECH Metal Master or Boss HM-2. They are very good and nice pedals, too, but this one costs 1/2 from the price of a Boss and I can't really explain, why! It does its job not a bit worse as the expensive folks :)

I'm using it with a Hamer Sunburst, Seymour Duncan JB and '59 Humbuckers as well as with a Gibson LP Junior with P90s. My amp is an Engl Screamer with a 4x12 Vintage 30 Cabinet. The Engl has a very sweet, thick distortion with lots of smacking mids, not so good for metal chords, but great for playing lead parts. I wanted something completely different than the Engl to increase my sound bandwidth, and I got the perfect companion with the Rampage. It's rather edgy and thin, with lots of bottom, and does this very good. I achieved what I wanted, to get something that is so different from the Engl - it's like to have a second Amp. Perfect. I would rate the noise level as really low !

Using both Strats & 335s into SS & Tube amps. Not bad on noise at all, a bit more when you really crank the thing, at which time it's rockin mayhem anyway. I kind of like noise when I'm on the edge of feedback. Very strong distortion, great for wall-of-sound-and-emotion. If you're looking for an all-in-one distortion, this isn't it! This pedal is for over-the-top crunch through hang-on by your fingernails insanity. I'm rating it fairly highly because it fits it's name and does what they say.

Well worth the price. I really like classic rock, but we occasionally are asked to do some really great new stuff like Creed, etc. and this is my tool of choice; especially when pushed by one of my other distortions. My only complaint is that these are kind of tank-like (I also have an Austin Gold) & my rig is heavy enough already, but that's a minor quibble compared to the fun that comes out!

Yes, yes, I know... All we really need is a black box which gives us every bit of the TONE we are after. We don't want no stinkin' knobs, we hates all that effeminate twiddling. Just gives it to us: a box that kicks hiney with the exact TONE we wants. All we needs is a stomp switch, but it would be even better if the box knew when we wanted to switch it on or off; THEN we could really concentrate on what matters: TONE!
Perversely, this box has knobs, and even a switch. All of which have to be (gulp, perspire) manually operated in order to acheive any TONE other than that of your axe. And many of those adjustments are even (groan, squirm) interactive! ('Please, make him stop... Just because I've learned to shred at Mach 5 in 12 modes doesn't mean I'm ready for knobs!'). Puhleeeezzz!
I've not rated this category because of the obvious. The controls have been enumerated in reviews below.

Remember the scene where Wayne & Garth are in the Pacer listening to Bohemian Rhaphsody? This pedal kicks in right after the last "...for me...", and just where their heads start bangin'. Gluteus-kicking roar. Nothing subtle here, I've used it with my Parker, through my VHT UL, to push back the front few rows when I'm feeling crowded, but they always surge forward for more. I have the older blue model which seems to be stronger in the lows, more girth, than the new silver ones. I'd give it a 10, but then I'd have to fight with others over them on eBay.

I play country to Creed, Zamfir to Zepplin, you name it, I like almost everything except self/others-hating music. I like simple classical as well as wall-of-noise. This pedal fits well in the latter, enabling me to sound like myself, with authority. I've used the Rampage with, well, I love my VHT UL & 412s, but I have tons of other stuff. I have 2 Washburn 15w SS amps that I use in stereo for rehersal, & the Rampage lets them have fun as well.
Currently, I have around 40 to 50 pedals (I know... I need to pare down a bit but it's so hard to decide!!) in addition to several multi-effectors, so I've had much to compare to (I just love all the flavors). I guess it falls somewhere in between the Zinky TG on full boost & the MXR Zakk Wylde.
Does it help me make music? For me, that occurs usually long before I get to my guitars. It does keep me goofing around on my axe longer than normal however, and I always love the 'look at me' sound I get when playing live with this pedal.
One last thing: Looking at the reviews below is a bit weird. There are either 9s & 10s or 1s (I often wonder if the 1s are folks wanting to dampen enthusiasm so they can snag the reviewed unit from eBay themselves. Just a thought.), so I guess that some love it & some hate it, but no one is lukewarm. Place me on the love side, because it gets a unique sound and presence not quite available with other hi-gain type pedals, which differentiates me in the mix.

It was very easy to get good sound out of it, I set all the knobs except for the level knob straight up; I set the the level to match the level of my amp with the Rampage off. I am using a Line 6 Spider 112 and either an Ibanez RG421 or an Epi Les Paul Classic. I set the Spider on the Clean amp model, adusting as neccessary to get a good clean tone; I also use the amps delay and reverb. I have tried various settings on the Rampage and I am still playing with different settings; I have been playing the most with the Bass at 3 o'clock, Scoop at 9 o'clock, Treble at 2 o'clock, Level to match amp volume (meaning; when I go from clean to the Rampage, there isn't a big difference in volume; I found this to help cut down noise as well), I have playing around with the Sustain at various settings, but mostly around the 12 o'clock position.
It sounds great, Power Chords are good and chunky, Major and Minor Chords sound good as well. Single notes ring out very well, depending on how the Sustain is set, for a short time or a long time.

I play Classic Rock to Metal, it will work very well for my needs. If it were lost or stolen, I would get another. I really like how I can have a good sound for Rythm and a good sound for leads and soloing. I have a Toneworks AX1500G, I couldn't get what I get out of the Rampage. I tried a DOD Death Metal, I liked what I could get for Rythms, but it distorted leads to much. I really like the styles of Yngwie Malmstien, Steve Vai and Zakk Wylde; I hear those styles in the Rampage and it inspires me to bring them out.
Very good for the price, I'll be looking at Rocktron when I go looking for effect pedals.

This is the 2nd worst excuse for a distortion pedal I've ever heard in my 30 years of playing (the worst being the DOD "Death Metal"). I tried thing using a Squire FatStrat, Epiphone LP, Gibson LP and Hamer Explorer through a Marshall JCM 900 SL-X and I couldn't dial a decent sounding crunch to save my life. The pedal sounds thin with no guts whatsoever. It's a very buzzy, tin-toned distortion and turning the various tone knobs only resulted in going from one thin tone after another. Also very noisy! I can't believe the Rocktron engineer/designer let this pass a quality test---or even out of the door, for that matter.

Simply an awful distortion pedal. I bought this untested through Musician's Friend after reading a review that absolutely praised this pedal like it was the wave of the future.
Distortion products I own (or previous owned) include: MXR distortion, BOSS metal-zone and SD-1, ROSS distortion, Digitech 2101 (rack), DOD-G7 (rack), DOD Death-metal, Marshall Jackhammer and Guv'nor. The only one I ever found to be worse than the Rampage was the DOD death metal. If you see an ad for this in a catalog, turn the page...

im using a jackson fussion standard professional series guitar into a morley steve vai bad horsie 2 into the rocktron rampage (the new silver one!) into a tech 21 double drive limmeted eddition (i use for viontage classic rock overdrive , i dont use it in conjustion with the rampage) then i go into a digitech rds 8000 delay or straight into either a rocktron sidewindr or gainiac amp on a clean setting..then into a rocktron intelifex and then into a rocktron rx20 wich i8s a stereo exciter and hush unit! then into a rtocktron velocity 120 then into a carvin vai legacy cab and a vintage carvin cab...both cabs are 4X12's and everything is in stereo starting at the intelifex!or the sidewinder pre if thats what im using!
the rampage is a bit noisy but not much especially for how much gain it puts out and i can quiet my signal with the rx20 .......
i put the bassat ten, scoopat 0, treblle at 10 level at about 3 and sustain at 10...i cna get some cool tones with the scoop at any position specialy at 5 or at 10....cool medal tones....
but with what i said before settings i get a super sweet tone a cool distortion that always sounds good specially for shred and speed metal.....ala jason becker, martyfriedman, megadeth, joe satriani, vai...etc.... add this with some nice delays and the dream chorus setting on the intelifex and you have a cool haevy tone.....
the weird thing is i totally scoop out the mids on the pedal but i have the mids up on the map and with the exciter on the rx20 i add some highmid bite!
but evan through just the rampage and a poweramp or a clean amp i have tried this peadl through...(marshall, peavey, crate etc....) it sounds amazing! id like to get a rocktron metal planet to cover the really heavy...deathmetal type tones also though!
o did i meantion i love tapping licks.... and this peadl sounds great when tapping it has a sweet tone nad still reamains clear so you can hear those amazing tapp licks!

It was extremely difficult to get any kind of good distortion out of it. I put all the bass I could on my amp, guitar, and pedal, and it still sounded dry and annoyingly peircing to my ears. The manual was good. I think that they should give more examples of the different ways to make sounds different.
Sound Quality
:

The sound quality was crap to dull. I was using an epiphone custom, with a fender half stack. I could not get good sound out of that pedal if my life depended on it. I could have spent half the money on a BOSS pedal, and gotten a better pedal then this. It was like the pedal did nothing. Just made bad noises, all feed back. They effects themself are weak. Really weak. The only sound I could get out of it was an all right Zeppelin sound. Otherwise it was NOT worth the money at all.

I play an Alternative Melodic Rock. I think that what they say about the pedal is completely different on how it sounds. I have been playing guitar for eight years. I would never buy the Rampage Rocktron ever again. I don't suggest to anyone buying it either. I compared it to every Distortion I could find, and a DOD Grunge pedal ($30) kicked this Rampage pedal out the door. This pedal is a waist of time. I wish it had more distortion behind it. It gets in the way of me making GOOD music. Haha. I just don't feel it is a good pedal at all, some people WILL disagree, but overall, I rate it a one-two. Closer to a one though.

Well I had to do a mod to it to get the sound I actually wanted out of it. The Sustain pot was a little too touchy for my liking. I took it out and wired in a 250K pot in its place. It does not put out the intense gain that it did before (bacause of the 250K instead of a 500K) but it suites the use. I am currently playing blues and rock and this is perfect now that the pot has been swapped. Before it had way too much gain. Even for metal it was a annoying gain. Backing off the gain made a terrific tone difference.

Couldnt be much easier than this... 5 knobs (bass, scoop, treble, level, sustain). The only thing thats even remotely confusing is the 'Scoop' knob, and thats only if your a newbie, thus the rating of 9. Bass and Treble boost the low and high frequencies, but the more scoop you put in, the more your mids are cut. Level is basically volume and sustain is your distortion level, pretty straight forward.

Ive had it set up a couple of ways...
ESP Ltd 7 string (EMG-HZ) > Rampage > Digitech RP100 > board... that sounded like crap, so i didnt use my Rampage for a while thinking it was that. Turns out its the shitty ass RP100 (stay tuned for that review :P )...
Now Ive got it... ESP Ltd 7 string (EMG-HZ)/Jackson Dinky (EMG 85) > Dimebag Custom Wah > Rampage > Carvin SX300 > Rocktron Hush Super C > Carvin 4x12
Both of these sound wicked as hell. The natural distortion from the Carvin amp is great, thick and meaty, but the Rampage has this insane crunch that I cant find anywhere else. Its easy to get Dimebag or Hetfield tones with this pedal and a decent amp. Basically this pedal kicks lots of ass for wicked crunch and really does have 'endless sustain' like it claims. The thing I like most about this pedal is that even though its got TONS of gain, its really quite compared to a lot of other pedals.
I rated this an 8 because I wish it was thicker, its got a great crunch and lots of sustain, but its sorta thin compared to other pedals and amps Ive tried. Not really a bad thing, just wish it had a 'Thickness' knob too, heh.

This is good for most breeds of metal, thrash especially. I play mostly metal like Metallica, Pantera, Slayer etc etc, and this fits like a glove. Ive been playing for about 5 years, and have used plenty of pedals, this one takes the cake IMO. If it were stolen, Id probably invest in something else and wish that I had bought another one.
Basically, If you are into hardcore thrash metal, this pedal is for you, Ive seen none better (DOD's got nothing on this).
The only thing I wish it had was a little more body to the tone. Even with the bass all the way up, its still lacking a little 'meat' to it.

Dime-332/Ibanez RG-270DX>>>Snarling Dogs Super Bawl Wah>>>DOD EQ>>>Rampage>>DOD ice Box Chorus>>Danelectro Flanger>>Ibanez Delay>>Marshall AVT-50. Originally was using a DOD Death Metal, which is alright if you just play palm mutes (cuz that puppy broke the signal up a bit too much for me). I got the Rampage because I liked the way the distortion was super-heavy, yet you can still play chords other than power chords and still hear the notes (did that even make sense?). I guess you could tweak it enough to sound like dimebag, or hammet, or hetfield, or whoever. Suprisingly, my setup ain't too noisey even though I run a bunch of effects without a gate. When I first got the pedal I ran it alone and I didn't even notice much noise, just a little humming, but that is probably because my power source is pretty close to my setup. 9 cuz ain't nothing perfect, but that's what we strive for.

(The older blue model)
In my opinion, this is the GREAT WHITE SHARK of distortion pedals. The Rampage has much better tone than the Fab Tone, more gain than the Smash-box and almost as tweakable as the SM-9.You can suck out the mids for an awesome scooped sound without losing the bass.Did I say bass??Well, this thing is OVER-KILL!You'll blow your speakers apart!
The Rampage packs powerful,rip-roaring dist. with razor sharp clarity.I do have two small gripes though.
1)It's a tad nasal sounding compared to the Smash-box.Maybe it's a built in compressor...??
2)It's a little noisey.More so than most boxes I've used.So keep that Noise gate handy.
But overall,IT'S A NASTY BEAST!!

When I bought it I A/B'd it against my other boxes. The Rampage just PIMPED them all!Not even the SM-7 could stand up to this thing. It out tweaked the Shredmaster and gave the SM-9 a hell of a fight.
Physicaly,I like the fact that you have to treat the Rampage with respect!Or it can hurt you(literally).
Although it's kinda noisey and slightly nasal sounding,I think the Rampage deserves a CLASSIC rating.Tweaker's delight.
To describe it in one phrase...BLEED!!

its aggresive and bity with a lot of focus (not like big muff) relly heavy (no need for more gain).

I use a fender strat loaded with Kent Armstrong pickups and a Burns Brian May through a Marshal VS100 amp. For the most part this pedal sounds great, reall Metal 'bite' looong sustain and thick tone. The Level and Sustain knobs are probably the most useful and a quick turn will take you from Metalica to Nirvana grunge. I don't really try and opy other players tones but I have never felt that I needed more gain than this pedal can give, quite the opposite. I often find myself turning it down to try and get a more vintage blues sound but usually end up switching it off! It can be a little buzzy when not playing (switched on) but hey, this is a HEAVY METAL pedal it's supossed to be noisy! As soon as you break out the power chords the noise is forgotten!
I find the pedal a bit to dominating to be used in conjunction with anything other than a little reverb, it tends to drown it all out! This si NOT a subtle effect!

If it was lost I'd buy another the same day.
I think the sustain control is great you can set everything else and just change the one knob for a dramatcially different sound. I love the build quality.

I use this thing with my bass rig(SVTIII, musicman sterling, eden, 4x10's and EV 18"). Not too noisy at all. it has SUCH GOOD VOICING, it looses no LOW FREQUENCIES AT ALL using it with a bass. there is no real blend from clean to distortion, but that doesn't matter. this will flood the room with distortion. I play dynamic music w/ ups and downs, tempo/time changes all over the place, as a 3 piece- i like to have lots of different tones for accenting. i bought this to emulate guitar tones on bass to make up for those parts that need to be filled in, and it does this extremely well!!!! most guitar-specific pedals do not have EQ's, and if they do they suck hairy goatballs (they might as well just stick with the lame "tone" knob). the rampage has high, low mid scoop, sustain, and volume, allowing no real drop in frequency for bass when you stomp on this angry SOB. I've played through every bass DI/Overdrive pedal you can buy, and pretty much most guitar distortion pedals i've ever seen, and this one is a shining GEM in a sea of crap. it's cheap and you will not be disappointed, and not that it matters-but it looks really cool as well. I SCARE PEOPLE WITH THE SOUND THAT COMES OUT OF MY RIG WITH THIS THING. RECOMENDED FOR BASS PLAYERS AND GUITAR PLAYERS.

I own a Noisegate(pedal) and a Tsunami (chorus) both made from Rocktron and those are very good quality effects. I bought the Rampage just to add a little "warm-tone" to my set-up. I figured I couldn't go wrong considering the quality of the other two Rocktron stompers. Keep in mind I own the "silver" one that looks like a half-hearted attempt to emulate the housing of the others. The blue one (in the picture on this site) is the exact same housing as my other two Rocktrons. Maybe the "blue one" is good , but this silver piece of shit destroys any tone and hisses and squeals like a snake in heat.Rocktron has a good reputation for putting out quality gear, but I bet they're kicking themselves in the ass for even putting their name on such a worthless (silver one) POS as this. MUSCIANS BEWARE!!!! The silver one sounds worse than a DOD Death Metal Pedal. (PATHETIC!!!) I would like to get my hands on the blue one though, but please be warned this silver piece of shit wouldn't be worth it if someone paid me to take it. (if I could rate this catagory a ZERO I would) I'll give it a 1 for the "Rocktron" logo being the same, but thats the only reason.

So I remove the sustain pot and replace it by a 500 Kohm Log.,
a 250 Kohm Log. will , I think, also work great if you have a guitar with high output pick ups.
Now I can get a light overdrive at min and go to extreme and inbetween .BTW the bass and treble control works great , so do the scoop, I found the volume pot a little sensitive, don't use it anyway.
I give it a 8 because of this and a other little problem, the input and output jacks are made of plactic and are mounted on the pcb, DOD
don't do that but there pedals sucks in tone.

Any setting at all sounds awesome. Don't worry about it. The level knob is a little touchy. Explaining the scoob knob is simple. There could be a line in the middle (or 12 o'clock position) of the treble and bass knobs there is also al line to the far right of the middle knob. Call the line "zero" as in zero decibels. The treble and bass knobs have 15 decibles on both sides of zero and the middle knob has 30 decibels on one side of zero (meaning -30 at full right postion of the knob). The knobs loose their place really easy (my pedal is still a rocktron rampage, but it doesn't have the deep set knobs). As a result I marked my settings with scratches on the sheet metal, but I do this to every pedal, once I find the perfect settings. Oh, and about the battery having a screw compartment, whoever complains about that shouldn't be playing guitar at all if they don't even know how to turn a screwdriver. What are these people going to do when their guitar shorts?

My setup at the moment is guitar (Washburn BT-3) to DOD FX-66 fuzz, to Ibanez PL-5, to this awesome pedal (the Rocktron Rampage in case you forgot what reveiws you were reading). then I have a DOD FX-10 pre-amp then a Boss HR-2 harmonist. That is everything before the amp. Then from the send in the effects loop I have my Morley PWA wah, and my Danalectro Corned Beef reverb. I plan on getting more distortions b/c that's really what I'm into. This is probably the best distortion pedal ever made. I am really sure that Rocktron tried to mimic the distortion of Metalica's black album and they came as close as possible. If you turn the scoop all the way up (as in sucking all the middle tone out) it gives it that metalica sound. This thing is not noisy when off in fact it made my fuzz pedal less noisy in the off postion as it was b/f I got this thing. To describe the sound best it's not really a heavy metal distortion (like Slipknot, Mudvayne) but a hardcore distortion (like Korn, Rage Against the Machine). The sound is just awesome. The only thing to compare to it is the Signal Flex distortion EQ which I plan on getting eventually.

Reliability has two parts in a pedal, the box and the circuit and this pedal gets a 10 in both. Whoever designed this thing deserves a Nobel prize. I took it apart a couple of times (I like taking things apart) and it's an awesome design. First of all it's made of some heavy guage sheet metal (heavy for pedals any way). Then the way that they put it together is superb the way the top slides into the bottom of it and the sides screw on instead of having a bottom plate. Pure genius. I'm sure if you hit someone with it, you would server hard time for assault with a deadly weapon. As far as the circuit board, like I said I tood it apart and it looks better than any guitar pedal circuit board that I've ever seen.

Probably the best distortion pedal ever made and at least tied for first with the signalflex EQ Distortion (don't give that thing a bad rap b/c you haven't heard of the company it blew my mind). The only real problem is that the knobs slide around WAY too easy (it's like they do it by osmosis or something I could have it set one way, put it in the box and have it set different when I take it out. Maybe I should glue the knobs in the position I want, but it sounds good no matter where they are at. Oh and another thing about this pedal, it really doesn't have any distortion control. READ the pedal it says SUSTAIN not gain or distortion level. With the sustain at 0 you still have distortion, but very short notes and with it full blast they don't exactly last forever, but they last longer.

Very easy. I don't know what all the fuss over the "scoop" knob is, it's just a mid knob in reverse. The "sustain" knob is kinda wierd, there seems to be a set level of gain, there is almost no difference between gain 3 and 10.

It's so smooth, it does not sound brittle, cold, and transistor-y like some other pedals i've tried... cough... BOSS... scuse me. I hear people compare this to a metal zone. DON'T!!! Compare it to a DS-1. It doesn't have enough gain for a heavy sound, but i have used other pedals to boost its gain, and then it's heavier than your mom. The EQ works great, they give you a little more treble then you need. Buy this, i am appalled that people who rave about a DS-1 have never tried this.

It is easy to get a good sound out of this pedal, if you are looking for just a hard rock sound. I'll get to that below. Very simple pedal. There is a "manual", but it is not very informative. It really does not need to be though, because the pedal is self-explanatory. I do have a gripe with the battery compartment though. What a pain in the ass! Two screws hold on the battery compartment cover, and they are tiny. After I searched my house up and down, I finally found a screwdriver small enough to allow me access to the battery. With the exception of that flaw, the pedal is easy to use.

Before I get into this too deep, I want to mention that I was looking for a metal pedal. Something along the lines of the smashbox, metal zone, etc. This pedal is good, but it falls slightly short in the gain department. The EQ sections of the pedal were great. The bass sounded good, the treble was nice, and the scoop knob gave it that "sound". The problem was the "sustain" knob, which is basically a gain knob. I had the knob all the way up, and the gain didn't have that over the top, ultra gain kind of sound like other "metal" type pedals have. I have a Marshall AVT 150 combo, and just to give you an idea of how the Rampage sounds, it was comparable with gain 2 on my amp. I wanted a pedal to give me a "death metal" type of sound, and obviously if it sounds just like my amp's distortion, then I don't need it. I don't want to slam this pedal, because if you need a rock to hard rock, and some metal kind of pedal, then you will like this. If you are looking for a Slayer, Slipknot type of sound, this is not it. I have heard a Metal Zone, and was using that as a base. The gain on the Rampage never gets to that kind of level. The footswitch is quiet, and the pedal is not noisy at all, so I have to give ROCKTRON a pat on the back for that. If they would have added another 2-3 notches of gain I would be very pleased with this pedal.

Overall, this is a nice pedal, but just not for me. They ought to change the name from "Rampage" to "Pretty Angry". It has a nice thick distortion, but is just lacking a bit. The name made me think "Gain For Days!", but I was missing some. If you want a nice rock pedal though, you will be happy with this.

I play mostly blues and hard-rock, ocassionally playing some metal. I bought this one after testing pretty much everything that they had at Guitar Center, and this won hands down. The switching is noisless, it doesn't alter the sound or level of your amp when you switch. The attack is detailed and you can get a great variety of tone and distortion from this. Add to that that ther is no plastic (except for the knobs) and that it is made in the USA, it's a great effect. The only downer is that not too many dealers carry them. But they are worth searching for. Now hunting for an Austin Gold Overdrive...

good sounds from end to end, in my opinion. i started by turning all the knobs to zero, then turned 'em all up (what the hell) and thought both extremes cool. lots of finger room around the knobs. didn't buy with a manual, but what for? maybe, just maybe, if i was in a mood, i'd say the unit is too big; i.e. a BOSS pedal is more "hand" sized, and easy to pick up.

i record, and don't gig with it. Parker Fly Deluxe straight into a Peavey TubeFex, then recorded directly, or with the Rampage somewhere in the send chain or in front (gasp!). i don't pursue cleanliness much, (dirt offsets digital), and have only noticed that there's none with this pedal compared to BOSS. use it for goth, industrial, rock, metal, white zombie-ish i guess. initially i took it easy on the treb and bass controls, then one day cranked 'em both and loved it. haven't moved them since. i keep the Sustain at the top 'cause it's good and noisy, then use the scoop at either 20% or 80% for two very different strong tones. 80% likes my Marshall. i have to adjust the level quite a bit between those two though. at some scoop positions this thing is loud. can't compare it to a lot of distortion pedals, but it's worth mentioning that it blows the doors of the digital AND tube distortions in the Peavey TubeFex for screamin-ness. mostly i remove the distortion from TubeFex patches now and use the tubes clean -- often with the Rampage. comes off awesome on recordings: huge and mean.

i like to chug, and the Rampage chugs better'n anything i've tried. i'm tuned down to C# and it doesn't mind. the high solos have a fair amount of screaming sustain too. i've paired it with wah, whatever, you name it. i don't like it on vocals much -- prefer other distortions. i love that it's built solid and doesn't feel like a cheap pedal (weight, jacks, knobs, switch), also the heavy edgy distortion and wide frequency range. EQ can be cut all over a mix without ruining the balls. it's never in the way, although it would be handier stuffed into my TubeFex somehow. i may never part with it. it's been worth the money for sure.

I think this amp is new in 2000. After searching around for combos I saw this little rig on an auction at a very low price and figured I couldn't lose...Man was I right!!The amp is 50 watts, with Rocktrons' AGX technology(automatic gain expander, it houses 2 custon 8" speakers(don't let that fool you), 2 channels Clean & Overdrive(footswitchable), seperate gain & level for each channel, plus built in reverb, presence & chorus,as well as 3 band EQ and a headphone jack. the clean channel is very bright, and the overdrive section has real TONE! I've played a lot of combos over the years, and I never wanted to spend $300-$400 on any of them...they just didnt have tone.
At the same time I can't justify $800 for a Mesa practice amp(I spent more than my limit on my good rig). But this little amp has killer tone..FAT! Volume doesnt seem to be a problem either..I took it to rehearsal and made out just fine...Did i mention the amp also has 2 speaker outputs so you can plug you speaker cabinet into it??
The amp is solid state...but after playing it..you'll wonder....

I use an sae pre-amp running into a adcom power amp which feeds 4 bose 901's. I also have a crate gx130c stereo amp but rarely use it. I like to play mostly heavy metal. white zombie, static x, korn etc.and was looking for the hardest distortion I could find and still have smooth, clean, not to brittle, quality sound. not like the electro-harmonic's big muff (which is super heavy and will rattle your teeth) but, something heavy like that, that actually sounds good. I have a danelectro fab tone which is real nice for leads but, gets to muddy sounding to do any heavy rythm work. I have several dod distortions too.I should also mention I have several rack mount effects too. I recently bought a zoom 510 which has some real heavy sounds to it. real nice. but just a hair to brittle for me.maybe I just need to get a tube set-up and that will solve all the problems. anyway, getting back to the rocktron. the sound quality blew me away. NOTHING comes even close. so far as noise? I don't know what the other people are talking about but, this is by far, the quietest distortion box I have ever heard.outstanding! now the bad news. it won't do korn or limp bizkit or white zombie or any real super heavy stuff. at least not on my set-up. it will do an almost perfect ac/dc sound. it will also do a real nice rush and pink floyd with the usual chorus, reverb and delay mixed in. this pedal has a unique sound that no other dist. pedal has.perfect for leads too. but, if you are looking for the korn sound you better keep looking.

This amp sounds GREAT! I tried many other practice amps (Crate, Fender, Marshal, Danelectro, Pignose, Vox, and others) before I bought this one, and hands down, this sounds the best of them all. The clean channel has a very rich sound with no noise, and the distortion (although not something I use frequently) is very good and sans excess noise. Turn it up LOUD and you get some very strange sounds, but like I said, I'm not much into distortion. The treble, mid, and bass adjustments really work, AND I can tell when I change the tone controls and pick up switches from my guitar, which is something other amps couldn't do. The reverb sounds good, too. From an amp this small you can't expect really great sound, but Rocktron really has hit the right combination of compontents when they built this amp, it sounds great!! Far better than you would expect from a small practice amp.

This amp was made in 1999, in Korea. It puts out 40 watts, which is more than enough for my use at home in my room. It's small and light weight (as any practice amp should be). It has two channels, overdrive with it's own seperate volume and gain knobs, and clean. Rocktron has it's own circuitry on the distortion that is suppose to keep it quiet. It has treble, midrange, and bass controls, and it has a reverb control. The speaker is an 8" Velocity made by Rocktron. It also has a headphone out.
The amp doesn't have a foot peddle or effect in/out plugs. But, this isn't too much of a problem because (I'm told) you can daisy chain these from your guitar to the line in at the amp. Although, an effects in/out would be a nice feature. Tremelo would be a nice feature as well (but, that's hard to find on a small amp these days).
For what this amp was designed to do, a small light weight practice amp, it does it very well. I bought it without knowing a thing about Rocktron (I wanted to buy a Vox Pathfinder, because it has tremelo), but now that I've used it, I'm very impressed!

Have to, they are no longer available ;) All the Rocktron stomp boxes are built like tanks. They are how a stomp box should be made.

Actually, I called Rocktron trying to purchase this pedal straight from them. I was told by a very nice lady that they are no longer available. The stomp boxes that you see in stores now are all that is left, as far as Rocktron goes. Rocktron had none of them left, luckily a small shop here in Tampa had one. So their customer support was good. Very nice and truthful.

I play as fast and furious as I possibly can. Basicly thrash metal. Basicly I live by the adage of "If it's too loud, your too old". All Rocktron stomp boxes are great pieces of engineering. recessing the knobs was the first great thing. You cannot accidentilly bump a knob and turn it. Material is next, as mentioned earlier, it is aluminum.
I had a BOSS Hyper Metal before. It died about 1 month after I bought it. If you can find them, buy the Rocktron boxes. They are so much better than the BOSS stuff. I just purchased a Digitech 2120 and am going to try running the Rampage through the effects loop on it. I figure that 2 pieces of equipment that are as good as these 2 are should sound great together. Lets hope so anyway, becasue I want to keep the Rampage as a part of my rig. I just love it.

This pedal is great! It has 5 knobs: Bass, Scoop, Treble, Level, and Sustain(Distortion). The names tell what the knobs do, except for the "Scoop" knob. Most people think that this knob scoops out the mids, but actually it's a boost for the mids(30db). And for the manual, it's just tells the function of the knobs and little things. Basically, doesn't really help you.

My current setup is: Peavey Predator->Crybaby 535Q->Crybaby->Rampage->Tech 21-> Boss DS-1->Daddy-O->Boss BF-2->Cool Cat->Dan-O Tuner->Rage 158. This pedal has just replaced my DS-1, for the main distortion unit. The Rampage has a great sound. It can go from a light overdrive to heavy distortion or from GooGooDolls to Pantera or anything in between. I mostly play Silverchair and Creed and this pedal nails it right on the dot! It can get you that smooth or hollowed out distortion and anything in between. As for noise, it has some, but humbuckers will take that away. Plus....it's a distorrion pedal; It's going to have noise.

This pedal is built like a tank! You could drop it from any distance and it would still remain intact. Also, I wouldn't use a back-up. Although, I just got the pedal, so I don't know the battery life. But, I will probably end up buying an adapter anyway.

Overall, this pedal is awesome! I love the sound I can get from it. It's a very versitle pedal, and anyone looking for a pedal like so...check this one out. If it were stolen...I would definately buy another one. And for the price I got it for...I couldn't refuse it. Through my long search for a pedal like this...I also looked at the Tech 21(which I bought(very good pedal) and the Rocktron Blackjack. The Blackjack was a waste of my time. It was just a horrible pedal. If your looking for an all around, versatile pedal...consider The Rampage!!
