Takes a while of tweaking to find what yer looking for unless its FULL BLOWN distortion your after in which case I'm not sure this is the best pedal for that.

Sound Quality : 8

I only play Danelectro's & I like the way this pedal warms up my PU's when I want it to. I have been playing it thru an Ephipone Valve JR. with various Tube Combinations. The nice thing about this Pedal is that no matter what combo of Class A Crunch or Clean I have going on based on the tubes when you stomp on the Blue Doo it gives you that warm 6v6 tube sound even though I'm playing thru 12ax7/EL84's.
I Personally find the Distortion a tad too fuzzy/buzzy on both the "snarl" & "bite" settings. However I think you can get some decent electric blues tube distortion sounds with the Gain on 3 oclock or so. Above that things go from crunchy to buzzyfuzzycrunch pretty quick. The Tru Bypass is excellent I can hear my Dano tone perfectly. I would not recommened this as a booster or overdrive Pedal as although it does not color your guitar tone it does color your amp tone drastically...which is fine if you enjoy that 6V6 Tube Emulation all the time. Buy a Bad Monkey if you wanna boost yer tone at a reasobale price & still maintain the same tube sound of your own Amp.

Reliability : 9

Nice Pedal for under 40 bucks...great for giving those single coils some boost, warmth, & sweet tone withe Gain kept Low...gets a strong fuzzy garage crunch when cranked...

I plugged the thing and and was blown the hell away. Push the button and rip it out. I have the silver model, and I honestly wouldn't even really want a tone knob. It's simple as eating cake. Vol/Gain and O.D./Dist. This is the only pedal I use, A carvin 1985 DC150 into a crate 80 watt on the clean channel with this shit cranked.

Sound Quality : 10
Best sounding distortion I've ever played through in my opinion. Period. Exactly wehat i was looking for.

Reliability : 10
Oh yeah, you can rely on this pedal 100%.

Mine is the older silver blue doo. The people at snarling dogs tell me it is exactly the same as the newer blue ones except it doesn't have the tone knob, and it's not true bypass. It's easy to use, just a drive, level, and a brightness switch.

Sound Quality : 8
I'm playing various guitars. humbuckers, and single coils into an old Fender tube amp.

With the drive on full and the brightness switch set to "snarl" it sounds great. Full sound without much buzziness or white noise. Lots of gain but still nice and smooth sounding. Lots of bass. Sweet singing leads, just what I was looking for. I noticed that the tone settings on my amp make a big difference with this pedal. Stomp on the pedal, adjust the tone of the amp to my liking and I'm all set.

The only setting I don't like is with the switch set to "bite". The sound is too harsh and bright more my liking. Just noisy buzz. Some may like it or maybe it would sound better with a different amp.

I'll rate the sound an 8 because there is always room for inprovement, maybe the newer one with the tone knob and true bypass would get a 10. I love this pedal!

Reliability : 10
It's built very tough. No problems here.

Customer Support : 10
I emailed cutomers support to ask a few questions about how the older silver model compares to the newer blue ones. They were very quick to respond and very informative.

Overall Rating : 10
I play heavy blues, southern blues, hard rock, classic rock, some old school metal. The Blue Doo will do a great job for any of these styles. I've been playing for 20+ years.

For the price this pedal is a steal, and a must have in my opinion. Definately the best pedal on my pedal board.

This thing is one of the easiest pedals I've used so far and with what I was looking for Plus more...

Sound Quality : 10
I play through a Samick artist series SG with the stock neck humbucker and a S.D. invader in the bridge this is ran into a Shure wireless pack into a Danelectro tuner pedal and then the Blue Doo and into a Crate GX900H Excalaber head with a 4x12 Legion Sound cab.
I got more than I bargained for in this pedal I thought I would have to buy another to get a better crunch like in a Boss metal pedal but I was wrong this thing has more than enough crunchy bite out of the overdrive and distortion than any I've played or heard. I really enjoy it because I play a dirty blues rock style and it complimentes every note with what I tried to find in so many other pedals.

Reliability : 9
I gig with this and use the same pedal in my studio and have had no worries about a back up. This is a great sized pedal with TOUGH written all over it. I don't play light so it's a keeper in my book. No problems, no worries on this pedal and I worry constantly if something will break or need replaced before gigs.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I haven't dealt with the company but I'm sure if ever I needed to it would be good as there product's.

Overall Rating : 9
If you play blues or anything that needs that certain heavy OD or chrunchy distortion this is the pedal to buy. It is very versitile from one end to the other with its easy to use knobs and great sound from a heavy to a subtile sound that will make you never put that axe down.

Easy to use OD Pedal. Just remember that this is a pedal designed to emulate an overdriven 6V6 amp. I wanted a facet of my Gibson LP Jr. amp, or Harmony H-304A included in my patch chain. THAT IS WHAT THIS PEDAL IS DESIGNED TO DO. If you're looking for an Ibanez SM-9 Super Metal sound, this pedal is not for you! Buy one of those instead!
It has a user-freindly owners' manual to help you get started.

Sound Quality : 9
My patch chain is as follows: Fender PT-10 Tuner, Marshall ED-1 Compressor, Blue Doo, Crybaby, Danelectro Fish & Chips EQ, Boss DD-3 Delay into the front end of a Mesa/Boogie .50 Caliber Head, run through a Johnson Amplification 2-12 Cab loaded with Celestion Vintage 30's. I use a '91 Les Paul, '92 Gibson Lucille, or a '74 Tele Deluxe with this rig. The pedal board sounds great with the humbuckers. No hum, or extraneous noise.
As Stevie Ray pointed out years ago, these OD pedals are used for a Volume Boost, as much as anything else. I set both the OD and Gain knobs between 11:00 and 1:00 o'clock, depending on the venue. This adds just a bit of growl to the existing clean sound. This is key, I believe. If you have a quality clean sound to start with, then this pedal can color it a bit, in effect giving you a third channel.
This is ideal for playing things like B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, Z.Z. Hill, or Albert King.

Reliability : 10
I've had this pedal since February, 2002, and have never had any problem with it. I have never needed a backup, and if I did, I'd probably look for another brand pedal. Equipment problems at gigs are unacceptable!

Customer Support : No Opinion
I've never dealt with them.

Overall Rating : 9
We play mainly Blues/Rock. This pedal is excellent for it's given application. I've been playing since the mid '70's, and have owned many OD/Distortion pedals, including a Boss Heavy Metal, Apollo,(remember those?) DOD FX-50, and an Ibanez SM-9. Also I have a Snarling Dogs Black Dog, and Tweed E. Dog. I like the Blue Doo best.

This is possibly the easiest pedal in the world to use. Volume, Gain, and the nifty Snarl/bite switch. It was simple to get a good range of sounds from a slight bite when you dig into the strings to a pretty healthy amount of distortion.

Sound Quality : 8
I originally purchased this pedal to OD an old Gibson tube amp. I emailed Charlie directly, and he was great (this was several years ago) He sold me the pedal for cheap because it was right before they changed to the blue case (mine is silver) I think i payed $40-45 plus a few dollars shipping. It also sounds great with my solid state Fender Deluxe 112 and my HM strat with a DiMarzio HB. It may be a blues pedal, but it still rocks. It has a very bold tone, like it's going to blow up any minute. Only problem is if the gain is cranked and you switch it off, you get a very faint echo of the distorted tone bleeding through. It disappears if you turn the gain down to about 9.

Reliability : 9
It's built like a tank. Seems to suck batteries dry though, so keep a few extra in your case. no need for a backup, unless it's another Blue Doo with a fresh battery-you need a screw driver to change the battery.

Customer Support : 10
When I was emailing Charlie, he was very helpful. Even sent me some souvenirs from the NAMM show-a urinal strainer and a pin that says "I pissed on Charlie Stringer at NAMM 94". He was a hell of a nice guy.

Overall Rating : 9
This is a fun, easy to use pedal. If you are sick of hearing about digital this and modeling that and mid scooping and all that BS, just get a Blue Doo and start playing. this pedal is also great if you are tired of your amp's distortion. Don't buy a new amp or a new guitar. This pedal can breathe some new life into a tired sound.

BTW if anyone can tell me what happened to Charlie, please email me. Can't find the info anywhere! Thanks!

Although there are only three knobs, two slide switches and an on / off switch (with TRUE bypass--thanks fellas), the controls are responsive. No wwhat you must understand is that the box is only one component in the package that makes sound. The guitar, amp, and player have as much, if not more, to do with the end result. Many relatively inexperienced players blame an effects box for short-comings in one of the other components. It's easy to use if you have patience and know what you're looking for. Also, it's called "Blue Doo." Let's try to figure out what this box is designed for based on the name. Shred? Speed Metal? Psychedelic Klezmer? No...BLUES. In that context, ignore the foul-mouthed, language challenged individuals who fault a car for not being a boat. Want a boat? Buy a boat! Some people can't work the temperature control in their own refrigerators, so keep that in mind while reading product reviews.

Sound Quality : 10
I have several guitars and amps that I use in different combinations. Guitars: Fender Clapton "Blackie"(w/ 12db booster), Peavey Generation 3 (both these guitars have active electronics),Gibson Lucille (the Blueshawk version). Amps: Fender Blues Jr. upgraded, Roland JC-77, '65 Super Reverb. My favorite combination is Blackie or Lucille played through the JC-77, with the Blue Doo in between. No other effects--EVER!
The unit can be a bit noisy, but in live situations, it's barely noticable. Not an issue.
The effects are subtle but noticable. A nice step up for a lead solo (which is what I use it for). It gives me an extra channel.
My favorite artists are BB King, Larry Carlton, Jeff Beck (though I do not emulate him), Roy Buchanan, Eric (The Half-a-Bee) Clapton, and me (obviously, I like what I play).
The effect itself is not overpowering, nor should it be. All it takes is little tweaking to color the sound the way I like it. As I mentioned previously, the controls are responsive.

Reliability : 8
I've had it six months and it's not failed me yet. If you run it over with your Borgward, it will fail however. Side by side against an organic, carbon-based life form, I'd put my money on the Blue Doo in the longevity department. Besides, there's nothing in there that I can't fix myself if it breaks. So far, so good.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to avail myself of their service, so I claim ignorance on this. I am impressed by the reviews of some others concerning the new owners and their responsive nature. I've been making noise for over 35 years, and poor customer service is one of my pet peeves. If these guys are as good as they say, I salute them.

Overall Rating : 9
I play blues, rock, Beatles (however that fits in), progressive country/bluegrass, R&B, and my own music (described by some as poetry set to an ambient drone of guitar groans).
Been playing since the garage in 1965. Other gear is described above.
If it were lost or stolen? Never lost anything or had it stolen. I'm obsessive about such things. Yeah, I'd buy it agin. I like the sound, and have incorporated it into my act. Why would I change something I like?
I did not do a side-by-side evaluation of this with any other unit. One of the advantages of years of experience (besides organic rot) is that I have a memory bank full of sound bytes of other units; plus, I work with many musicians of many diverse tastes and backgrounds. I get to hear what they play, and either my interest in piqued, or I dismiss the sound as something I'm not interested in.
I like the idea that its there for me, and does what I need it to do, and very well at that.

Finally, I really want to repond to these "gentlemen" who like to use this venue to bash both equipment and players of other genres of music. It's a big world--big enough for lots of different opinions. Accept the fact that yours is but one of a multitude, no better or worse than anyone else's. And when I read a review that wanders off into bashing of others, I immediately discount the individual and his/her opinion. So, rather than waste your time and mine by writing a review worthy of a nine year old with a $99.00 guitar/amp combo, put your time into practicing your scales on an acoustic guitar, and let's see what YOU sound like before we bash the gear.

This is an update to my previous submission. I have now gigged with this pedal a few times and used it in my studio, and am now using it in a slightly unconventional way. I leave it on virtually fulltime, with the gain and drive both at about 11 o clock, and use my solid-state's channels as before, and it makes a hell of a difference! Now I get a rich, rounded clean tone switching to a solid dirty crunch, and if I turn my axe volume up about 2 notches that crunch turns into a beautiful, rich lead tone, almost Santana-esque. If you think your amp sounds too thin and trebly I strongly advise you to take the chance on this pedal before you drop hundreds on a new one, cuz the Blue Doo has SAVED my tone.
