This is a fairly easy to use piece of gear.
I hate multi level menus of any kind, but with modern rack gear, this is what you get.
But be encouraged... there is a software editor(REAL MAJOR) that workes superbly... couldn't be much better
There are several effects built in and they sound quite good, however they seem to be limited on the settings you can make in each of the parameters.
Patch changing is near flawless... the best I have ever heard!
The look is top notch! multi colored display is informative and easy to read.
On-off satus of effects are always displayed
The manual is pretty well done
there is a user forum, kinda slow, but still working and you can usually get your questions answered.

Sounds great. just what you expect from TC.
I use this with a modeling rig.
From the Highway one strat into a Morley wah, then into a Digitech Bad Monkey, then into My V-Stack classic amp modeler, into the TC, then through a powered monitor.

True bypass? This is not true bypass. I was pluged 1 channel from my preamp to TC, next to 1 channel of stereo poweramp and 2 channel from preamp directly to 2 channel of poweramp. There was a diffrence between this two options...

I'll start by saying that I'm not much of a rack gear effects kinda guy and I'm not a big fan of digital gear either. My main setup is all analog but I needed a high quality stereo pitch shifter for a new project I'm working on.
- The factory patches sound really good. There are many useable presets and minor edits can be done to adapt them to your setup very easily.
- Editing patches is simple. I had a quick look at the manual to figure out how to enter editing mode and from there, it was pretty simple. Intuitive enough that you can learn on the fly. The manual is useful to figure out more detail about the setting's meanings.
- The manual is simple, well written and to the point and if there's anything you can't figure out by yourself, a quick look at the manual will help.

- I mainly use this unit along with an ADA MP-1 preamp. I have tried it with a couple of Marshalls with the effect loop and it works great but the effect loop has to be set to line level. If not, you might need to tweak the compressor and noise gate settings. This is to be expected when feeding the unit different signal levels. The input level knob can help in harmonizing the levels between different amps if you decide to use the unit in multiple setups.
- Extremely quiet and the noise gate really quiets down the high gain amps and work extremely well.
- So far, all effects sound top notch to me. The only thing I'd complain about is that the pitch shifter can sound a little synthy but at this price point, its unbeatable. For the pitch shift, I just reduce the wet signal mix. The stereo capabilities of this unit are impressive and I highly recommend to anyone buying one of these to get a stereo setup.
The unit itself doesn't colour the base tone coming from your amp. Its a very transparent unit. I'm very impressed with this unit, esp. at this price point.
- Some of the features on this unit are very useful too, like the tuner, the solo boost option, midi mapping and the relays to channel switch your main amp. This is really designed for the gigging musician in mind.

Bought mine new in 2008. I was a little reluctant to buy this unit based on the reliability reviews I saw on here but I've had no issues so far, knock on wood. I asked the salesmen where I bought this whether they got a lot of these back for warranty or repair and the general consensus is that these are solid units. I was ready to buy the G-Force for added reliability so its not like they were trying to push the G-Major.

Overall, I'm very pleased with this unit. This is my first digital rack effect unit since the late '80s and the sound quality is definitely there. I'm almost contemplating getting rid of my analog pedals for live gigs.
I think that this unit is in a class of its own and its a great value for the price.

This is a very complex product. But if you are an advanced player (and you probably are if you are buying this) you should have no trouble figuring it out, easy to use, very ergonomic. The fact that it can be midi controlled is just awesome. This is a pro piece of gear, I would advise beginners to work their way up to something like this.

Sounds great... for the most part. It does not take well to some amps though for live use. I have and Engl fireball and a dual rec which it works great for, but I cannot run it with my fender twin reverb. I don't know if it is the sensitive vintage circuitry, but the G major can be VERY noisy with some high quality vintage amps. I would try it with one of those amps before buying so you're not disappointed.

I plug it on a serial loop of my Laney VH100R. Just a few teaks and I got good sounds of it.
Editing patches it's not difficult to someone who had another gear like that (racks or midi pedalborads).
I thought it was very precise. In 2 or 3 hours, in 2 days, I've learnt everthing it has to offer.

Guitars, Jackson Kelly KE-4 (I think)and Ibanez RGFM320 (both w/ Seymour Duncan pickups); Laney VH100R+TT412A; ISP Decimator; CryBaby; and a Digitech RP-12 as controller.
It's not noisy. Very clear unit. Does not colour the laney's tone.
It substitutes a lot of stomp boxes... It has all the "real necessary" effects, and some not so much. Modulations and ambiences are very good.

Its a professional sound unit, even at that price.

This processor is very easy to use I had no problems what so ever programing it. I have heard of issues with this unit being used in the front end of a guitar amp. I had no such issues. It has plenty of output. I put the output to "consumer" and it was fine. The manual sucks shit I mean dam TC really needs to get it togeather with the manuals..

I am running this thing into the input of my amp in MONO before the G-major I have a Twin Tube distortion. It then goes into a 63 vibroverb amp. The sound is amazing I love everything about this unit its the perfect effects processor. The sound of the reverb is perfect all of the effects are great and they are all studio class. I am a sound engineer for 20 years. I have been a guitar player for 30 years. I think anyone that thinks these effects sound bad should have there ears checked.. Is it easy to get the sounds you want... NO.. if you have never used a high end processor before its not easy to get sounds.. But once you get them look out. I have modified my TWIN TUBE so that control one and two will switch my overdrive on and off. Giving me three channels one clean one dirty and one lead. This thing rocks trust me get this you will be happy.

The effects are top class! To get anything better you would have to spend well over twice as much and even then I doubt the difference would be that noticable. Since I've owned the G-Major I've owned 3 different amps. I change gear like underwear because I'm so damn fussy about my sound. The one piece of gear I've stuck with is the G-Major, because I've neve felt disappointed with it. The Delays and Reverbs are crystal clear and none of the effects colour your original tone. The are breath-taking. This unit can take the most bland of clean sounds and make them come to life! The coolest thing is the ability to change channels on your amp with it- saves a lot of tap-dancing! Some other effects units have this function, but usually only allow you to switch between two channels, and often you will have to rewire the lead to get it to work the way you want it. The G-Major will change up to 4 channels!

Simply stunning, no tone sucking, the noise gate works like a dream, you can easily adjust it to preserve long sustain notes. Set the patch to run in parallel mode to keep clarity and prevent the effects muddying up each other. This is better than any sub 1000UK pounds Lexicon reverb/delay rack.

Compred to about 3 lexicon rack units and a whole bunch of messy floor pedals that didnt work as well as this does in the FX loop. Fo rthe money you cant beat it, no reason to upgrade tot he G-system as this is basically the same processing unit.

After you read the manual for 5 years then it will come to you. I'm sure if you take the time to read it tho you can make this unit do a lot of things, but easier to have quick edit knobs for the effects like pedals, but yeah get a pedal then. Then again who says ya can't have a good multi-effects unit that can be adjusted just like the pedals. especially if you sit down and play (keyboard, etc.) and have the effects right there beside you to quick dial in a certain edit. Why not? Also the thing has cheap turning plastic knobs that fall off or get loose!

Great effects! All of them, to my ears anyway. You can also set all the effects on at the same time (don't know why anyone would want to but hey at least it's there to do it for the hell of it), w/ the push of a button for that effect. Many many options to choose from. Has flange, phase, chorus, delays, reverbs, pitch shifts, trem., octaves (both hi and low which is always nice), compressor, noise gate, all that you can imagine except distortions. True bypass, no color tones when off/bypassed.

Excellent sounds when you're using it in stereo, mono is ok but stereo is where it comes alive. There isn't a wah-wah effect which is too bad. They have a patch on the web site but it's horrid. The noise gate works really well and I'm happy with all the effects. You need to tweak a bit to get you're own sound but that's to be expected. I run a Shure wireless into a Buddah Wah, into a Peavy RockMaster all tube 3-channel preamp, into the G-Major and out stereo into a Mesa 20/20 into a Marshall 1960 slant with Avatar Hellitones (Celestion Vintage 30s put on an exercise program by Avatar). I play several different types of guitars from an acoustic w/Fishman to hot humbucker equipped solidbodies and most everthing in between.

Ahh, here's the problem, I've never had trouble with it freezing up or anything like that but the electronic components for the parameter and data wheels are bad. I've had mine replaced twice and again one of them is non-functional. The last time I had it in they replaced the entire front printed circuit board with the display, that was three months ago. It worked fine when I got it back, I've played it for three months and then last night I went in to edit some level parameters...the control doesn't work now. They need to look at the design because obviously they are using inferior parts in that part of the circuit...and I'm getting tired of having to have mine repaired.

I've never talked on the phone with them, I do my corresponding via email/web site. The turn around time is not what I'd like to see, 10-15 working days is a long time to be without a significant piece of your guitar arsenal. The last time it crapped out it took almost four weeks to get it back. Now on the other hand they did fix it for free???of course it???s broken again so I???m not sure what that???s worth.

I play rock, surf & blues, it works good for any and all. I used to have a large pedal board with all sorts of different effects but it was just getting too complex and the reliability was low due to all the cables and such. The G-Major had most of what I wanted in an effects unit and when it works it's great. If someone else made a unit with the same abilities and price range but was more robust I'd be all over it. Three failures in a little over a year is not good.

Not so easy. G-major does color your sound a bit and you need to adjust input/output lvl EVERY TIME when you are changing preamp vol level.

I initially set it to the FX loop of my Single Rectifier, but the sound wasn't very good at all. I had to call TC Electronics and they helped me set the unit up properly. After that, the unit sounded very good/clear.
I purchased the unit used, and the previous owner's presets were very usable. However, editing was fairly intuitive after reading the manual. I read the instructions before I plugged in, but if I hadn't things might have been more frustrating.
I do not know the firmware. I purchased the unit somewhere around 2002 or so.

I mainly purchased the amp to replace my chorus pedal, as well as offering me reverb and delay -- I did not own a delay pedal/reverb, or any other pedal for that matter. I was more concerned with having something to "season" my sound. At the time, I really was not concerned with switching through multiple effects. As a result, I do not have a remote control hooked up.
My setup is a Korean Hamer guitar, GMajor in the effects loop of a Mesa Single Rec and a 2x12 Recto verticle cab.
It does not seem to be noisy for me. I have tried a few footboard processors before and do not care for them at all. The Gmajor sounds more natural, to me. Overall, I rate the quality as excellent.
The best description I can give is that it makes me guitar sound better, not worse.

How easy is it to get a good sound out of it? - If you have any kind of experience with rack effects units, it's quite easy. If you're a beginner, you'll spend some time learning it
How about Editing patches? - Fairly intuitive; not horrible
How is the manual for it (if there is one)? The manual could be much better, IMHO. Certain details are not there, and there is tons of repition in there (i.e. reverb section)
Do you know the firmware revision number? Has your unit been upgraded? 1.27 -mine came with this latest version
I tried out a Rocktron Xpression unit, and thought that the G-Major was easier to use, plus, the interface was much more user-friendly.

The sounds are great, and the patch changes are as fast as you'll find in a rackmount unit for this price. It's also great that you can program it to change the channels in your amp, as well. I play on a Les Paul Gibson Studio with EMGs through a Randal RM100C and patch it into a 2x12 Mesa cab. The G-Major is in the serial effects loop, along with a BBE Maximizer. Don't count on being able to purchase an expression pedal and emulate the Whammy effect via the G-major; it's soo slow and unresponsive to the pedal fluctuations that you'd think Corky was operating it. This dissappointed me, and prompted the purchase of the actuall Digitech Wammy II pedal in addition to the G-major (boooo). I actually think the G-major is quite transparent to my guitar sound, but I know there are a lot of musicians out there who "think" it colors their true guitar tone. These are probably the same people that claim the air is fresher in their house with the Ionic air breeze devices.

Okay, this section is the whole reason I wanted to write this review. I've been a user of the Harmony Central reviews for over 10 years, and have played on a variety of different instruments but never contributed back to these reviews until now. I purchased my TC Major from guitar center in May of '05, and thankfully I had the sense to purcase a 2 year extended warranty. I bought the warranty because I had read so many disastrous reviews on its' consistent error-rate, that I'd be stupid not to get the warranty. Why did I buy the unit? It's got everything I wanted in a rackmount processor at a reasonable rate, so I had to see if the lack of quality was true. Sure enough, 1 year and 9 months later the unit freezes up on me in practice and sometimes there's no reviving it for several days. Thank GOd for that 2 year warranty puchase - the Insurance Company that manages the extended warranty cut me a check for the full amount paid for the unit (can I get a HELL YEAH?!!) Let this review serve as a formal warning to all musicians considering purchasing this unit: If you cannot afford to have a faulty piece of equipment in your rig (which I don't believe anyone can), DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. Period. You'll find that you spend hours tweaking all your presets only to find one day that the unit will fail you. Sure, you can backup your presets elsewhere, but do you really want to purchase another piece of crap to upload your presets back to? Hell no! So now, I'm back at the drawing board trying to reasearch a rackmount unit that'll fit the bill again. I understand that TC Electronc has a reputation for good quality in their higher end products, but certainly not this one.

Haven't dealt with them - I went straight to GC, where I got the warranty from, and they refunded my money 1.9 months later (thanks to the $70 purchase of a 2 year extended warranty - well spent!).

I've been playing guitar for about 14 years; I typically play heavier types of music - if this piece of equipment were more reliable, I'd say it is a great match for my style of music. I compared this to the POD XTPro and the Rocktron Xpression; I actually liked it best out of the 3, but the damn reliablility factor diminishes all others.

Like other reviewers, my G Major locks up periodically and cannot be relied upon for use as a live effects unit. The only fix is to power off the unit and power it back on. How long will it last? It is random. Sometimes it is 10 minutes, sometimes an hour, sometimes it outlasts how long I want to play.

Software version 1.27
This is the second Gmajor I've owned as I sold mine when I had some money troubles, went thru a bunch of pedals and some other rack fx (rocktron, digitech and lexicon) on my road to recovery, before I finally found my way home to the GMajor. By the way I bought this brand new for $200 less than I sold my old one secondhand!
Couldnt be easier to program now, but I remember having a few moments when I first got one. The manual sucks, it describes the fx and functions brilliantly, but skimps on details reffering to the programming of it all.

What I noticed with the other processors I tried was how much they altered my amps sound. The G Major does not. If I run it thru the series fx loop on my amp and hit the TC's bypass button, there is no change in tone except the lack of effect. If I run it thru the parallel loop, no matter how much I tweak the mix knob the tone doesn't change, again, except for the level of effect.
All the effects are top notch and this unit is dead quiet. I can get any effect I could possibly need.
My setup is- Jackson USA JJ2 Scott Ian model guitar w/ Seymour Duncan El Diablos, Charvel USA SanDimasII guitar w/Dimebucker(b)and Evo(n), Morley Little Alligator Volume pedal, Morley Bad Horsie II Wah pedal, Rocktron Taboo Artist (midi/ pre fx pedal), Rocktron Vendetta 4ch 100w Valve head, G-MAJOR, Custom-made birch-ply quad with 4x 25w english made Celestion G12m 'Greenbacks'.
This is a fantastic sounding, versatile setup that I would recommend to anyone. Didnt want to change the tone at all, just add fx. The G-major fits the bill splendidly.

I play anything from blues to grindcore/death metal. This covers my basic reverbs thru to mad solo tones with whammy or whatnot. I hate giving perfect 10's and last time I didn't, but having gone thru other so called 'hi-end' processors and coming back to this I realise how good it really is. Its a perfect 10 for its price range and a 9 compared to anything available for guitar

No I CAN NOT depend on it!!! I read other reviews, and people have said things like keeping it in a rack case and taking care of it is all you need to do and you'll be fine...
Well, it's becoming a common issue where the G-Major will blink out, freeze and malfunction.
This began happening to me earlier this year. I recently sent the G-Major in to be repaired and Tech support confirmed that this is something that has been happening with many units.
2 weeks after receiving my unit back from TC, it all started happening again.
It will often freeze mid-song and cut off my guitar signal until I unplug it from my pre-amp.

My trouble with it is, despite what I've read from other reviews, I DO NOTICE a loss in signal when I switch between EFFECTS and BYPASS on the GMajor. I have it set up in the Effects Loop of my Triaxis.. I use George L cables.. I"ve read that it can be corrected with the Output Level but it didn't work for me. If anyone can help me correct this.. I was surprised at how user friendly this unit is. There were times when a certain function seemed out of my reach so I needed to refer back to the manual (goes without saying, but it's required reading) which is very well written, but as far as setting up/saving/tweaking my own presets and everything that goes into it, it's pretty comprehensive. I believe my G Major is Firmware V1.24.

I use Jackson guitars, so all Duncan/Dimarzio humbuckers. My amp is a Carvin X100B played through its matching 4x12. I use a Digital Music Corp. Ground Control to switch preset to preset.
The G Major is absolutely noiseless. This is an invaluable "feature".
It's amazing to me what this unit can do for my tone. I basically use it to add that 3rd dimension to my sound, or that push over the cliff. Some effects I use are subtle, some not so subtle. The Carvin that I own has a very nice dry clean tone anyway, but with a slightly detuned chorus sound (ie, L Voice detuned -5 cents, R Voice detuned +3 cents) and some delay, it really opens it up even more. It's pretty much helped me find the clean tone I've always wanted. I would compare the detuned chorus effect to Petrucci's clean sound on his instructional DVD Rock Discipline.
The delays are wonderful. Follow the instructions given in the manual to help you achieve what you are looking for, they know what they're talking about!
I will soon find a use for every effect I'm sure, I'm hoping to use the wonderful Resonance Filter at some point. The EQ is pretty effective. My band plays some covers, and my distortion sound is lower midrange, so when we bust into heavier stuff I have a preset that cuts out a little bit of the lower mids and gives me a great Metallica sound. For my leads I give the upper midrange a little boost and a 3 DB boost as well - more than enough!

It takes trial and error, but you will be successful and greatful when you do. Perfection is not given, but earned. I owned for over a year now and I'm almost there. editing is a slow go, unless you downloaded the editor and midi it into your computer.
The Gminor is kind of a joke but will make simple work if you don't have large feet. A true midi controller is needed. I have the PodXTLive that if needed will do the work when it not connected to the computer.

At first, I was getting a tunnel sound and volume differences from loop on/off. You have to settup your output range, which is 2,4,8 and 16 to get a good matchup. I really though it was my mesa boogie, but really just patience. On Mesa Dual Rec's you have to go 100% send and 100% return. The GMagor is design for this. Then there is the EQ. What a variety. Just listen and remember that what sounds good in the home will sound different live. You have the Freq, Level and Octave. All the effects are awesome, with the exception of the pitch, just basic.
Once you find the sound, give it some time and you will be searching again, It's human nature. We get use to it and want more.

It's mean to be used in a serial effects loop, says so on the site and in the manual so I am not sure what the reviewer below me was complaining about. If you want an amp with no effects loop and only a few basic high grade, true bypass pedals then why did you buy this?
Put this in a serial effects loop, add a midi controller (The Rocktron midi-mate is a much better option than the TC midi-mouse.
I use it through a CAE OD-100 playing either a strat or 52 reissue tele, I have a wah in front of the amp and this in the loop, that's it.
Edit the patches to your needs, once you do that (It's simple) you'll have a very clear effect that doesn't wash down your tone, it's a subtle layer added to your tone as an effect should be.
Read the manual guys, it's not hard to do some simple things that would cut out half the complaints on this board, set the input/output correctly to your amps loop to start with.

If you are used to dealing with electronic devices this is comperable. The manual is OK at best and to me sub menus are confusing and a pain.

NOT FOR LIVE GUITAR!!!! The G Major IS NOT a unit for replacing your foot pedals, as I sadly found out. It is a PRO STUDIO UNIT. I wish somebody had warned me about this before I sank my money into the G Major, G Minor (midi pedal), and small portable rack set up. Head bangers and fuzz nuts won't notice the difference, but I play into Victoria, Kendrick, Allesandro, and Matchless amps. No matter how you set the G Major (I contacted tech at TC and they told me the G Major was not meant to be used plugged directly into guitar amps) it will muddy and slightly distort your signal and lop off some of your highs. The proverbial blanket over your speaker effect. The FX are good and you can tweak them to taste but they are of no use to me. I wanted a single rack to replace all my pedals for concert work.

I'm a pro player and my music is played on rock, country, and AC stations. TC makes high quality stuff. I have their Chorus/flanger foot pedal on my board and love it. The G Major however is another beast. I wish TC would advertise it as what it is. If you want FX for your rack in the studio (I NEVER use fx on the backside when I record - I'm old school and like the sound of pushed air)to run your guitar through I'm sure the TC unit will do just fine, but not for me. I'm sticking with SIB, Keeley, Carl Martin, ZVEX and TC stomp boxes. Better tone - more control - less hassle!

I have owned Digitech, Peavey, Alesis, Line6 and Rocktron fx and in my opinion this blows them all away in terms of sound quality. I cant hear any noise and once i set it up to my liking there is no coloring of the sound when a/b'd between dry and wet that I can hear. It sounds really clean to my ears and just does the basics very well which I like, not too "over the top" sounding. I run usually an Ibanez RBM1 with Emgs_Behringer powerlight_Rocktron Hush SuperC_Marshall JMP1_GMajor_MesaBoogie Simul295_Marshall 1960a. I use a Digitech RP10 as my midi foot controller and have had no dramas, the GMajors "Learn" function is very useful. I run The Gmajor in the effects loop of the Marshall JMP1 which has a parallel loop, so I use the dry kill function. I have also run the main outs into the Gmajor in a stereo serial setup and it sounds much the same. Over all Im very happy with it and would give it a 10 but there are better units like the TC GForce and Lexicon MP2, I just cant afford one!

It's easy to get a good sound out of it. Editing patches is made easy by the delay, pitch, chorus/flanger, etc. buttons. I would prefer that the delay button lead call up the effect level parameter first. Or a delay level button would be nice. My Johnson amp had this, and it really made life easier. A workaround is the assignment of this parameter to a cc pedal.
How is the manual for it (if there is one)? The manual is pretty good.
Do you know the firmware revision number? 1.27
The problem is that it doesn't talk easily with the Behringer FCB 1010, which, according to my research, is one of the favorite choices among G major users. I've been using fx processors and midi since the 80's. Although I'm no expert, I'm pretty midi savvy. I spent several hours enabling features like pedal-controlled tap tempo, boost, and wah. TC's website does a great job of answering many questions and referencing Yahoo groups. As TC points out, the 1010 has issues, not the G major.
I would have been glad to pay $250 for a TC midi controller with the same features as the 1010, if the controller was optimized for the G major. This is opposed to the $150 for the 1010.
But the fact remains that, although I blame the 1010 more, the combination of the two has high PITA factor.

What setup (i.e. what guitars and amps) are you using this with? Ibanez RG 470 and Mesa Single Rectifier 50 watt combo.
Is it noisy? no
Are the effects weak or do they always sound great? Delays are great.
The chorus is good, but I prefer my Boss chorus.
The flanger sound is not as good as my Ibanez pedal.
The phaser is not as good as stompboxes.
The wah chews, as is expected, given the fact that it's in the fx loop, not where a wah belongs.

I will probably return this and the 1010. I got this puppy to replace my pedal board from Hell -- a 2-level MKS modular board with chorus, delay, flanger, eq/boost. I wanted a neater, cleaner, more compact setup. I find that the difficulty in setup and the compromise in sound quality on some G major fx outweighs the benefits. I'm disappointed. Note to any Dual Rectifier users,be sure to have your effects mix knob set to 100 percent to put it into serial as the Gmajor is serially oriented. I was having a large volume drop off in sound going from amp head to processor until I did such. Nicolas at TC Electronics was able to help me out with that bit of info whereas the idiots at Mesa Boogie told me I had to send my dual rect head in to get a serial effects Mod put on. Sound quality is top notch TC quality. That's why I bought this. I was amazed that effects could sound this good. Reverbs are excellent, delays are very good, chorus is probably the best effect on this unit. IMO. Another reason I bought it is that there is no preamp or distortion. Thus no tone coloration. I didn't buy a kick arse amp to have it muddied up with crappy distortion or preamps.

Pretty good, not a 10, but good. I had a couple hiccups with it over the past 3 years, nothing major. Pretty solid I think for rack effects. People tend to abuse stuff and give gear a lower rating than deserved.

A very good investment. I've had compliments on my chorus and delays with this unit. I'm sold on TC gear, ever since I had an SCF pedal. You'll get top notch quality effects from TC, but you'll pay for it. The only thing that I don't like is the way that the unit is controlled. TC has the G System out now, which solves all of those problems. It's salty though and I'm not confident that it's worth what they're asking. Having owned the SCF pedal I took a leap of faith to get the G Major. I wasn't dissappointed. I suppose it will take the same leap of faith to acquire the G System.

I play it so: Marshall JMP-1, G-Major, Peavey Classic 50/50 rack. All serie connected.
It is not noisy but it gives a bit of colour to the tone (many says NO but I noticed that...). However it don't change too muche the sound.
Must use it serie connected to get the best from the machine.
Delays are superb, and so reverb. I like the 1 and 2 Octave whammy too...

The sound quality is excellent. No colouration of the tone of my precious valve amp. I really expected to be able to hear some difference as I'm a big tone freak but it didn't change my tone a bit. Very happy with it. I hear no hiss on chorus, like i did with my Boss DC-3
Flanger is a little weak (< Boss BF2) and Phaser is just OK, but should have been in a different loop, in order to put it before your amp input. An alternative would be to just buy your favourite phaser and a MIDI loopswitcher.
The detune on Pitch is excellent. If you want that 80's thing, that's it.
You have to realise that your amp plays an important role as well. I use an ENGL 570 tube preamp with the TC G-major in the stereo loop. That way I can benefit from the frequency compensated outputs of the ENGL. I use no further amplification and go straight into the board, just like our keyboard player.

I play top 100 and my own material. Since I am fond of 80's and symphonic rock, this unit serves me well. I can finally do appregios with tube drive and pitch detune like Alex Lifeson on Red Barchetta. And oh, these Jamie West-Oram licks! It's just a shame that the phaser won't work like it should.
I have been playing since 1977.
I'd buy it again if it was lost, or I might save up a little longer and buy a more expensive TC-E like the G-Force or G-System.
I love the overall soundquality
Hate the absence of a second loop and the fact that I cannot MOD the reverb like I would like to.
My favourite feature is the stompbox setup. I ditched my Boss pedals for this one, but don't want to lose myself in programming patch after patch. My favourite effect is by far the detune.
The comparison was actually a package. TC G-major + ENGL 570 vs Vox Tonelab vs Line6 Pro XT vs TC G-major + ENGL 530, Voodou Valve, my old setup Koch Powertone + Boss Pedals.
I wish it had an extra loop for the phaser and more MODs.
It helps a great deal, I can't imagine it getting in the way.
I control this unit with a Behringer FCB-1010. There are better ways to control it, but none for a price like that, and this works.

This was my very first intro into the world of MIDI. and though it was quite a learning curve (and i am still i'd consider a beginner at MIDI) this unit wasn't the hard part. for setting your sounds, i think it's pretty easy to get your basic sounds going. keep in mind thought, the MIDI stuff (such as having it connect up with a floorboard) wasn't quite as easy, but even for a beginner, i survived and i'm really happy. once you get the hang of it yer off and going pretty fluidly. i really like the interface of it, much better than others. the manual is pretty decent, however not at all exhaustive or as specific as i would have liked... i had a lot of online user group help and found some documents from users that helped tremendously, so the manual was simply a starting point.

i use a 64 and 71 Gibson SG, a 60's Jazzmaster, and some others, most all humbucking guitars. i go into an Engl Powerball (check these out, i reviewed mine here on HC) and use only the G Major in the effects loop. it is my sole effects processor. then i go out to a Diezel 4x12 cab (also an awesome piece of gear). i use an FCB1010 to control it. great board for the money and it gives you a lot of diversity. 10 banks of 10, so there are always 10 buttons to choose from for presets plus 2 expression pedals. i used to use the exp. pedal on the righ tto always be a vulume control, but to get more usage and creativity, i started using an ernie ball volume pedal and now i use the 2nd exp pedal for changing effect settings...more on that later, that's where it gets fun.
there is no noticable noise. i a/b'd the device with it plugged in and unplugged (using my effects loop mix knob on my amp to get an "instant" comparison) and i think it is identical.
the effects:
you can have as many as 6 on at once, and in those 6 categories there are a lot of different effects, then each of those have lots of different settings you can change and customize. what i like is that you can have 4 modifiers. right now i use 3, here's an example:
on one of my presets, i have a little bit of delay in the mix. with the 1st expression pedal on the FCB1010, when i press it forward, it slowly brings a phaser pedal into the mix. so i can have delay with either 0 phaser or totally wet wth phaser...or i can set it to have the expressoin pedal max out at only 50% phaser, whatever i tell it to. with the 2nd expression pedal i have reverb placed on it so i can have it be totally dry or soaked in reverb. then as my 3rd modifier i have a tap tempo button that controls the timing of whichever effects i have turned on. (you can also have an expression pedal control the tempo...i do this for tremolo and rotary effects so i can have that gradual speed up and slowing down effect like old leslies).
as far as individual effects, all the available effects are really nice and easily customizable. the pitch shifter and whammy effects are WAY better than the actual digitech whammy pedal, which i own. the Digitech "searches" for the note that you add, the TC is unbelievably flawless. the wah wah is nice because it is totally customizable as far as the sweep goes, which is cool, as well as the auto wah. reverse delay would have been a simple addition that was overlooked, just for somethng weird, and there's a couple other effects i wish they had that i dont even know the name of but that i've heard around. maybe there's some creative way to make it happen.
for sound quality, what is there they probably deserve a 10, but i can't believe that a 10 can be bought for $400 on musiciansfriend...call me a skeptic. i only give it a 9 because i know there is something more out there somewhere.
btw, i just got a TC Electronics M One, basically a G Major but made for vocals. if you end up liking the G Major and want something with similar quality and interface, check it out. really lush reverbs and pure delays, very cool unit and is a great addition to vocals (i also have the same tap tempo button feeding both units, which is nice). no review on the M One yet, i need to give it some time.

I play anything from heavy rock (rage against the machine, helmet, incubus, etc.) to reggae to classic sounds (U2, blues, etc.)
been playing for 12 years.
if it were stolen i would definitely buy another, it's a great base (and a very big, solid base at that) for your effects needs. for most it will satisfy all your effect needs and thensome.
as far as features go id probably give it a 9 only because it lacks a few effects that would have been nice, but that's getting pretty picky. id like to add some of the stranger effects just for fun, reverse delays, things like that, although there are a few weird ones on it already. i also think some distortions (tho i know its not meant to be a preamp and didnt expect, i would just like some random odd distortions just for bits and pieces of songs...im totally in love with the distortion i get through my engl, so itd be just for some accents and effect). i'd also like to see a switchable effects loop would have been really nice like on the POD XT Pro, GT 8 and upcoming GT Pro. but for the money, no effects loops. i actually plan on getting another unit just for the icing on the cake, like a few extra effects and effects loops (for those unique pedals you just cant find in rack effects). I'm looking at maybe a Boss GT8 that i would somehow rackmount and leave in the case and control it remotely in addition to the G Major for certain things, like random distortions, effects loops, and other odd effects they have (acoustic emulator, sitar, weird stuff just for fun that ill pry never use in front of anyone). i looked at a POD XT but didn't like the sound of almost anything on it, and hated the interface.
like i said, for most people, it will suit all of your effects needs...for those of us who just have to have it all, its a great solid foundation, a great piece of gear, especially for its price. highly recommended.

The editing of the effect is pretty logical. Of course if you want to access the more advanced function you have to look at the manual. I've owned Alesis, Digitech, and Lexicon. The manual and electronic interfaces are great. It comes with 100 factory presets which are very easy to modify and store. You can easily push a button to turn on or off reverb, chorus, delay, etc. There is a manual but I haven't had a need to read it; its easy enough to figure out by experimentation. But-Some parameters within effects (like compression)are redundant, and some, (like reverb) have parameters that don't do anything as far as I can tell. Not a biggy, just a little too much bell and whistle.

I run this throught the loop of a Soldano Decatone, and a Marshall 4x12 cab. My axes are a PRS Singlecut (Les Paul), and a PRS McCarty Soapbar (strat with 2 singlecoils). There is a little hiss, but its usually not noticeable when playing, and its no worse, maybe better than the Alesis, Digitech, and Lexicon I've owned. You can sound like Summers, Fripp, Hendrix, VH, Lou Reed, Frisell, Gilmore, the Edge, and basically anyone that uses effects.

I play fusion, classic rock, blues, and baroque. I've played for 25 years, semi pro, and currently in a worship band. This is an amazing unit. All of the effects are great. I even find myself using the pitch, which says a lot because I'm a traditional tube tone player, using usually only reverb and delay. I give it a 9 only because there are higher end TC Electronic and Lexicon units. I don't know why you would need anything more than this though, unless you're a pro, or want to wetten your axe so much that it sound like a synthesizer. The tone from my tube amp is preserved completely while running this through the loop. The G-Minor pedal however is questionable. Its $130 extra and really doesn't do much, other than flip manually through the effects.

This unit is about average to program.I have version 1.27,and the manual doesnt tell you much about the updates. The website has a list of the software changes, and a question and answer section under support. This unit is different in the way you acess parameters and pages than most. Not harder ,just different. If you are familiar with programming processors, this one should hold no big surprises. For those who want plug and play, you may be in for a learning curve, but thats probably a good thing. In this day and age, guitarists need to avail themselves of every advantage offered.Knowledge is power,at least for me.We all learned to use computers didn't we?

Is it noisy? I do not have any gripes about that.My unit is virtually dead silent. My rig is fairly standard. The rig that this unit is in consists of a JMP-1 ,several other digital doodads, into a boogie simultrack 395.I also have the boogie 290,but prefer the 395.It sounds better to me.Dont know why,it is virually the same identical amp, same wattage ,simul-class,etc.The noise i do get comes from high gain preamp settings, which are masked while i play, but the noise gate in the g major does a nice job of killing that when not playing. The noise gate is pretty intuative, easy to set up.One thing i've read about is the loop on the marshall not matching the serially designed g major. The manual says to put the g major between the pre and the power amp.Tried that.Works fine. However, the loop on the marshall is basically parallel from 1 thru 6,and acts more serial 7 thru 12,with less original signal as you go.The loop setting is programmable per preset,so with a setting of 7-8,depending on the processors program selected,i get a virtually identical copy of the manual suggested setup. The detuning ,with a properly tuned and mixed chorus ,will smoke.add a little delay, and your buddies who love heavy handed rock will drool. The filters are cool, but in my situation,i have to use them judiciously,i'm not playing with Chick Corea. The reverbs are incredibly good, especially for a live guitar rig, just take the time to properly tune them.Delays are more than adequate for just about anything the average guitarist like me will need.I use strats ,teles, and PRS guitars, and this unit allows the sonic signature of each to emerge, this unit is nothing if not transparent. If you have tone problems, look elsewhere,it is not the unit.

So far I haven't experienced any of the problems that others have posted,so reliability is not confirmed yet.I have a TC M-one from one of my other rigs that i have put in my current rig, that i have loaded with a bunch of guitar presets, and that unit is just as pristine as the g major, just not as versatile,so that is my back up.I also have other processors available,so i could get through a show if needed. For all of you who have the old Quadraverb plus, run through it into an m-one,programmed properly,to get the 24 bit sound, into your power amp.You might be surprised at the pallete of sound availabe to you.Twisting knobs and pushing buttons never hurt anyone, and sometimes rewards you with sonics that you never considered.I will reserve opinion on reliability.Ill wait for another couple of years before i can honestly comment.

I play the usual club band stuff.Radio rock, some country now and then, even 80's rock is starting to happen again.I've been playing thirty years for my income, and a lot of those on that road, including stints with several recording artists.I own a bunch of gear, from all eras, and would have to say that todays gear is better than ever before. My how the industry has grown.I do not ever want to travel again,at least not full time, but that does not stop me from wanting the best sound i can acquire, even for playing at local venues.People and other musicians {who might hire you}judge you on how much you sound like the famous people they see and hear,at least partially. This unit, the G Major, helps you down that path.It really doesn't have any favorite features for me,just a fine tool.Would i replace it with another one? I guess that would depend on what technology is just around the bend, but with the current state of gear, yes.I chose this unit for it's ability to bring studio sound live for my guitar. For a few hundred bucks what else could really compete at this price point? If you want the ability to sound thoroughly modern. For the vintage sounds that some crave, use your amps and guitars, and hit bypass if the unit gets in your way.In my experience,it is always good to have options, the more options the better, and the G Major is a fine option to have access to.

This is not a unit for people who wanna plug& play!Unfortunately some of the people posting here think that this unit can provide good sounds without having to tweak. So if you dont wanna tweek,go with line6.This is a high end processor with a lot of options to shape your sound. For best results read the manual! If you do so you'll be rewarded with some great sounds.

I use this unit with different tube amps(Marshall dsl 100,LaneyVH100r,Laney tt100H)as well as with my beloved Rocktron Piranha and a Peavey classic 50/50 poweramp.
The gmajor offers the following effects:noisegate, compressor, reverbs, delays, choruses, flangers, phasers, filters, tremolo, whah, and an eq.
The noisegate is great.Very guitar freandly;not sucking the sound but the unwanted noise. The compressor might be alittle bit too lush for some guitarists, but i think its great, cause it doesnt kill your dynamics even at high settings.
The most outstanding effects are the delays.Just great, with a lot of clarity.Same goes for the reverbs.
Chorus is not as good as the vintage tc pedal, but its good.
Flanger& phaser sound too digital and sterile to me.
The filters and the wah?I dont know, cause i dont use that stuff.
The tremolo is really nice.
The tc allows you to choose from different effect rootings:parallel,semi-parallel or serial. These have great effect on your sound,so be careful about this setting.
I noticed that many users rate this unit very low because they have problems with the loop-settings.Guys:READ THE MANUAL!!!And if you dont know what kind of loop your amp has,ask your local dealer or someone who knows!
I achieved the best results by using 100% wet on the amp.The in and output volume on the tc should be set to your personal taste.
I give this unit a 9,because the tc gforce sounds better(and costs three times more !!)and because the flange/phase sounds are pretty sterile.

If you are used to working with computers, it's fairly easy to use. You won't need the manual very often. Try to get aquainted with the unit without manual, it's really easy to use.
For interfering with MIDI it's a little bit harder, but it has some nice self learning capabilities to work with your type of MIDI controller.
My software version is 1.27
Sound Quality
:
8
Setup:
My equipment is very sensitive to tone: PRS Hollowbody Spruce --> Fuchs Overdrive Special OD30 (incredible clean and distorted sounds, similar to Dumble) with switchable serial/parallel Loop --> Open Mojo Tone Cabinet with (OLD!!) EV12L Speaker and finest (German) Sommer cables with the best NEUTRIK plugs. No other pedals yet.
Noise level:
The unit is deadly quiet.
Tone:
Every conversion sucks tone - keep that in mind - and any digital unit in your loop adds 4 physical contacts, 2 cables and one A/D and D/A conversion process - in direct comparsion to the dry amp signal you will (!) hear a difference - Use good cables (!!) and plugs (!!) . Then the difference isn't too much , but a slight compression in treble and a small lack of liveness is the price of the G-major (as it will be on other comparable units too).
Therefore the only way getting good results is to use the unit in a parallel loop, even if the manual tells you different. Check out the right balance of amp signal, converted dry singal and effected wet signal - it takes time, but it's really worth while. The theoretical phase cancellations due to the A/D an D/A conversion (approx.. 0.1 ms delay) as reported by some users are not as hard in my ears. It's a fact, that a guitar signal is very complex and not a sinus wave! The parallel loop even gives you the possibility to engage your real amp tone with the output mute function on the G-major (if your amp has no loop bypass switch).
In series loop, where the complete preamp signal is pushed through the unit, the sound is a little bit dead, not too bad, but every guitarist with a good sparkling clean tone will recognize that.
Effects:
The prestored effect patches are mostly useless - they only give you some hints, what effects and parameters you can combine. You have to tweak a lot (!!) to get a good result - there are many, many parameters which can be set, maybe too much for some user...The 3 routing possibilities of effect keep the known order (COMP>MODULATION>PITCH>CHORUS>DELAY>REVERB) and are sufficient to get interesting combinations. The free routing in the greater G-Force seems to be more dedicated for experimentalists.
Best are delays and reverbs, choruses sound a littly bit glassy and thin, it's hard to get a good analogue chorus sound (you have to buy the TC or Martin Analogue pedals for nearly 2/3 of the price of the whole G-Major)
The tremolo and phaser sounds o.k., filters and flanger are a crap, The pitch shifting is fast, but sounds not very natural - the detune function is a good help to get more natural choruses. Compression is weak, compared to good units (e.g Barber Electronics Tonepress), but it might be even due to that a compressor should be used before the preamp, not after!
One important hint: Try to get a Stereo-setup It will significantly increase the quality of the G-Major!

Don't have it a long time, therefore no value yet.
I think in SW Release 1.27 a lot of bugs have been removed - Never had any problem with "hang-ups" or drop-outs.
The two bigger turn knobs (rings) on the front are really cheesy, often nothing happens when you turn them one step or more, but fortunately you don't have to use them live.
Display is nice, except for the cursor appearing when renaming presets - the cursor is nearly invisible. The plastic (!) push buttons even feel a little bit "loose" - there the difference to the 4-times more expensive G-Force...
The rest of the unit seem to be very well built.

This is a great processor for reverb and delay sounds. As I read, there a the same reverb and delays in the G-Force, so I see no use to buy this much more expensive unit.
This unit is fine for differents setups in a live gig or in the studio. For the price of one "Vintage footpedal" you get many possibilies and I can recommend it to any user new with effects.
You have a wide varitety of good effects to play with and can learn and understand, how the interfere - later you can decide, which effect you will replace by a specialized stomp box or anything else.
As all effects are in one unit, you will not get any aditional noise in combination - that pretty good! I will keep the unit for it's reverbs and delays, sometimes added with phaser and tremolo and small amount of chorus.
To get rid of the compression lack I will buy a compression pedal next time.
Genrally speaking: The overall value for price is more than excellent.

This was a back up for my Lexicon so I had it two years before I really put it to work. After the Lexicon G2 crapped out and I lost mega parameter settings I got rid of it and made G-Major my main unit. Well it took about a month before it started freezing up. Sometimes the meters would peg and freeze, sometimes no display and freeze and it was downhill from there.Of course the warranty is long gone even though I have hardly used it.
It's been 6 weeks and I still havn't gotten it back from t.c. (I was told 2-3 weeks when I called before sending)
After reading these reviews I'm fairly confident it will die again another day so now I'll probably sell it if I ever get it back.

I only had it for a short period of time now, but I found it a little confusing. The manual is poorly written so I had to do some web research to find some information. The TC web page, though, is pretty good and some of the issues with this unit are raised in their database.
My software version is 1.27
Some of the effects have too many tweaks and options for my taste. Especially the input/output levels are too complicated and can be edited in at least 3 different ways.

The reverb and delay sounds are outstanding!
The rest is pretty good or a little better than mediocre. But that is a matter of taste also. The chorus sounds are not my taste, but not bad. The phaser sounds are pretty useless and I am thinking of adding a pedal to my rack again.
All the other sounds I don't really need. I played a little with the EQ. It does something, but it is not great. I will keep my Boss GE-21 for that.
I am using the G-Major between an external preamp and a regular amp head in. So the thing is not really in a loop which is a problem I just found out, beacuse the TC is built to be at line level in/out. I could fix it by playing a little with the in/out settings and switching to the "consumer" in level. No matter what people say otherwise: it does color the sound slighlty when in "bypass" which is not really a bypass. It adds some hiss also. If it had a hard wired bypass it could be a lot better.

This is a great processor for reverb and delay sounds. TC did a good job at adding a few guitar-friendly features but one can still tell that it is based on studio equipment. Depending on the type of gear used that may be great for some people. For me, it was somewhat disappointing because of the missing bypass and the line-level problem. My old Alesis Midiverb did not sound quite as good but was more aimed at real world guitar use as far as levels go. Unfortunatly, I do not see any reasonable alternative. All the new equipment is aimed at kids who like stomp-boxes (God knows why...) or modeling. I guess I have to buy another external looper for the G-Major.
Features I like:
- reverb sounds
- delay sounds
- external switches
- AC in without wall wart
- automatically detects 110-240 V
- the fact that it does have a tuner
- looks
Features that are ok:
- chorus sounds
- display
Features I do not like:
- levels control
- in-out levels
- coloring of sound when in "bypass"
- no hard-wire bypass
- "only" 100 user presets as opposed to 128
- tuner display too small
- EQd sounds don't sound that great
- Phaser sounds
If it was lost or stolen I would probably try again too find something else though I am not sure where to look in the same price range. I am not sure yet if I will keep it.

Okay....first off....If you are just starting out, you will be clueless....! It has a lot of parameters. Editing is easy and storing is easy, just wheeling through all the options takes awhile! I have seen worse to use....try Rocktron stuff....their rack gear is very hard.

Transparant is good. I have had mine for 4 years....Sounds are good when dialed in! Like most people have said, doesn't change the amp sound unless you change the filter. Then you can change resonance. The presets are super slim....Very bad....I don't use any factory presets and have only 12 user ones that I use! Chorus is GREAT~! Delays are GREAT! Reverbs Are good, Pitch is cool, Phase is pretty good....Can be overwhelming, just make sure the mix level is set low. Noise gate, and compression are smooth. The idiot a few reviews below said it isn't the same level as your amp when engaged? He must not have a clue how to program it, cause you can set the Overall output levels to 0db! The back controls are awesome. I use a mono bypass switch to just bypass the preset live! HANDY FEATURE!!! I do have the midi controller, but have never used it. Just never bothered....I should sell it.

I use this unit with a modded 5150 head and 2 Custom Ibanez RG Prestiges from Japan....I play mostly metal, and can get Petrucci leads, Eric Johnson leads, lush chorus, and good delays. I was doing some editing last night and with on each preset I could adjust the EQ....This is the only feature it lacks. Unless I just haven't found it yet? I think I have to buy a EQ for soloing sound. I like the scooped sound, not 0 mids, but set to 4. But soloing, I like a cleaner lead. If anyone has any questions about this unit, you can email me, and I will try to help you out....Been playin for 18 years.

I am a techo by nature so am used to arcane programming methods and horrible user interfaces, but even so, I thought the G-major was quite an easy box to understand and configure.
The global stuff is easy to setup with a couple of reads of the manual (to try and figure out how it all fits together) and a bit of experimentation.
Regarding the effects, I agree with several other reviews here that too many options would be a further distraction from making music. The G-major has most of what you need and not a lot you don't.
It's really an almost perfect companion - in the reasonably-priced range, for my triaxis (I control both with an FCB1010).
The level meter is a bit confusing, but a feature missing on many units. You have to be really careful not to clip your input signal as digital clipping is nasty stuff. With all the volume controls in my rig it took the most time to get the levels right across all my presets.
Sound Quality
:

My setup is a triaxis/mesa 20:20 and I have spent a few hundred getting custom audiophile cables built. I was most worried about the sound quality when I bought my unit.
After trying it out for a week I had no complaints. Ttrue to their word, TC have put in good quality converters into this product and the sound quality is not greatly distinguishable from when the G-major is out of the signal path altogether
From the schematic, it looks like a bypassed signal still gets converted back and forth from analog to digital - I am sure there is a good reason for this, but a true bypass might be a nice feature.
I was tempted to upgrade to a G-Force, but after reading the converters and processing power in the G-major are actually better, I left it at that.
The effects quality are exactly as advertised, good quality, useable. The only thing I miss is the pitch-shifter of the G-Force...ah well, I'll just have to record more tracks!
I'll give it a 7, although it's more than that in terms of value for money.

I'd recommend this to any guitarist looking for a rackable multieffects.
Especially in Australia where we tend to pay a bit of a premium for goods imported from the US, the G-Force is likely to not be worth the extra dough.
The MIDI implementation is great - again, almost everything you need and not much you don't.
The sound quality is spot on, if not quite what you'd call stunning.
The range of effects is also pretty spot on to want most people want.
I just hope I can find a specialist pitch-shifter at some point for around the same price!

I initially had some problems operating the gmajor, but thats because Im an idiot (plugging the input into the wrong jack etc). despite my best attempts to confuse myself, this thing has a pretty straitforward layout.
it's midi capabilities, however, are a little confusing.
The manual however, is not much help. It's written for people who already know how to use it, which is frustrating for those that don't.

Im using this in the effects loop of a Mesa Boogie Nomad 45, set to be as serial as possible.
Since this thing is really tweakable, it's kind of hard to get the right sound at first (I would be totally lost on the G-force), but it's completely possible to get any effect to sound great, its just hard sometimes.
The one thing this processor is missing is an intellegent pitch shifter.
The best part of this processor is it's transparency. despite being digital, the g-major produces absolutely NO unwanted colouring.

:

Short of being physically destroyed, I can't think of how this thing might crap out. Being digital, this is pretty hard to do. Since it's rackmoutable, it won't run the risk of being physically destroyed if you've got it in a good rack.

TC electronics has an excellent questions page on their website, and it your question isn't on there, you can email them and they will reply in under 2 days. A few days later they email you again to see if everything worked out. I was VERY impressed with their customer support.

My favourite part of this processor is, as I said before, it's transparency. I also like the relay switching too. I can't think of anything I downright dislike about this.
I was going to compare this to various Lexicon effects, but they took too long to be ordered in by the stores in town, so I tried this out, loved it and bought it.

Ugg. I summitted a review three years ago when I first got the unit. I've sent it back to the mfr once because of some issues, they started again so I procrastinated sending it back, pulled it out of the box just to check it before sening it back and it worked so I started using it again, but it is completely unreliable. Here is what happens.
It generally starts up okay, with the boot sequence you'd expect. Sometimes, if it was cold or hot in the car while bringing it to a gig or practice, it will display the blank-yet-backlit screen. Waiting for it to get back to ambient sometimes helps. Other times it seems that taking the power cord out and putting it back in more tightly will let it boot up. At other times, it seems to want to be plugged directly into an outlet instead of a power strip. It's that finicky.
At other times, it just stalls, which was the original problem I had with it. By "stalling" I mean that no sound comes out and the screen freezes into what it last experienced. I've read some of the other more recent reviews and see that I'm not alone. This is very aggrivating. You can wait a little while, unplug it and replug it, and it will boot up again. I'm guessing but it may be that my FX loop is too hot or something.
I can no longer trust this piece of equipment, probably shouldn't have once it broke the first and second time, but I do love the delay and chorus sounds. I wish I could find something comparable that was also dependable.
I am adding this review to help inform users and potential buyers. I wish nothing but the best for TC Electronic, but I'm sorely disappointed because for a time, I really loved this unit, just can't trust it.

I won't lie, I love my G-Major, but it takes a bit of getting aquainted with. All of the options are there. However, I found most of the factory presets useless. If you take a day to sit with it and figure your own presets it will provide. But like most gear it isn't perfect out of the box.

I use the G-Major with a Marshall 80-watt combo amp (1x12) and a custom 1x12/1x15 cab. The part I like about all TC Electronic processors is that they put emphasis on truely 'transparent' sound. I love the sound of my amp and cab. The beautiful part is the G-Major doesn't change that. I use it to cover a lot of Dream Theater tunes where I sometimes have low tunings. The signal doesn't ever fade, which I have found with some other racks. Most of the effects are useful, however I found that the flanger in particular was weak. However, I still recommend playing with it. You might like it better than me.

I replaced a whole wack of pedals using the G-Major, it is totally gig-worthy. I always use it for live shows with no backup. However, if you go into the menu you can change to seven-string tuning mode and it'll will recognize these notes fairly accurately.

I tried all of the other multi-effects processors and found they altered my sound too much. If you truely love the sound of your amp and are looking for a bit more color I recommend the G-Major to you.

I learned my lesson the hard way. Having the unit freeze up during a gig in not something I want to experience and it will happen with this unit. It has done it numerous times at rehersal so it's really only a matter of time before it bites me at a gig. T.C. needs to adress this issue right now! Read the posts on the yahoo user group. this is a very common problem.

They are really nice guys who would like to help you but their power is limited. Expect to be without your unit for 3-5 weeks. They get such a low rating because upper management won't listen to the users! WE want the freezing issue fixed, we want to be able to rely on the unit. We want patch editor software. The patch editor should be a very easy thing to acomplish and would make tons of users very happy with the company. These are not unreasonable requests. T.C. needs to build a real one. the G-Minor is a joke. If after this repair, it freezes again, I'll be replacing it for sure, prolly with a rocktron product. I can't risk having a failure during a gig.

The interface on the G-Major is fantastic. I have used many rack mount multi-effects boxes over the years, and TC nailed the best user interface (well, I liked Sony's GP5 too, but it was similar). I felt it was very cool that each effect module had its own button and LED status. If I ever was in doubt of what was happening with a particular preset, I didn't have to scroll through a menu to find out if a effect was on/off. I could also turn on/off an effect with a single button push.
MIDI programming was pretty cool. I used a Rocktron Midi Mate and a DMC ground control set up to turn individual effects on/off within a preset.
My only complaint was that the two dial knobs were a bit difficult to remember which did what.
The tuner was always active and displayed. This, too, was an awesome function to have.
The manual could have been better. I would have liked more discussion about what the effects parameters did and how they reacted with each other.
I do not remember what firmware version, but I can tell you it was the latest as of January 2004. It did have the EQ, which earlier versions did not have.

I used the G Major between a Mesa Triaxis and into a Mesa Simul-class 2:90. It worked as advertised in that it did not color the basic sound.
There was no glitch when switching between presets!
The delay settings were the strongest point of this unit. The delay "spillover" was so COOOL!! This is where the delay repeats onto the next preset for a totally natural transistion from one sound into the next.
All other effects were very cold and required a lot of tweaking to get something that sounded natural. The modulation effects were the worst. I understood TC were the chorus/flanger gurus, but I sure couldn't tell with the G Major. The chorus was just barely usable, and the flanger just flat out sucked. I tried all the different flanger settings I could, but for the life of me could not get a decent flange. I ended up buying a cheap Danelectro Hash Browns flanger for $30. I never got a decent phaser sound either. Maybe I'm a little more particular because I've heard so many different units. If you think the chorus/flange/phase of this unit are good that you haven't heard many other units out there.
I thought the reverb was ok, until I plugged in my old Digitech Legend II to see if I could get close to the same sound. There was no comparison... sorry TC, but even an old 16 bit Digitech sounds better than this.
I'd give this unit a "5" for sound quality, but I dug the delay "hangover" so much, its worth an extra point!

I had my unit in for repair 3 times. The first time was after a year, so the warranty was expired and I had to pay a $100 or so. 6 months later, the problem happened again, and so back to TC it went. Another 6 months later, same problem. TC replaced the main board the second time, and gave me a brand new unit the 3rd time. I sold it as soon as I got it back because I didn't want to take a another chance with it. I ended up buying a Rocktron Xpression (3 year warranty).
The problem was the same as I've read others complain about on this database. The screen will go blank or display gibberish. Just before it dies, it makes an awful squeal.

I have been playing for over 20 years and I have owned Zoom, Sony, Digitech and Rocktron multi effects units. The TC sounded the worst, but compared to the Sony GP5 as far as interface. I loved the built in tuner that was always displayed. I loved the delay "spillover" and that the transition between presets was quick and flawless. I loved that the programming was very easy. If the TC had as good of a sound and reliablity as the Rocktron Xpression, I would have never gotten rid of it.

I am using it in the fx loop of my Engl 530. It is very quiet and the most transparent I've heard (having used Line6, Boss, Digitech, Alesis). I'm very happy with my 530, and found the Boss VF1 I was using sucking some tone out of it, that's completely solved with the G Major.
All the fx are excellent, immediately when I went to the presets, I noticed I had never played with such great verb and delay. Best phaser in a 19" digital apparatus too, fastest pitch fx I've worked with, best digital compressor, noise gate and eq are very good. I hate chorus, so I can't comment on that.
One thing I could use is a ringmodulator, but I'm in fx heaven. I play spacey and psychedelic heavy music, and I can really make a lot of noise without creating one big pile of mud.
The routing options are great, serial is great for when it has to sound fat, semipar and parallel for clarity with complex sounds.
Overall the warmest sound I've had from a digital machine.

Editing isn't too bad, but if you've never assembled your own patches, it's going to piss you off at first. The manual definately sucks. It's more of a guideline, and you have to pretty much dig into it on your own.

I'm using this in the loop of a Marshall TSL100 (or Hughes & Kettner Triamp MKII) and also in the loop of my little practice amp. There is no audible noise as long as it's hooked up properly. The chorus and delays are KILLER! For a unit in this price range, you can do no better. The tremelos, flangers, phasers, etc....all great. If you use the harmonizor or pitch shifter correctly, they can be useful as well. The compressor is a little out of place in an FX loop, but it is noticeable if you need it. I LOVE the equalizer. Very cool addition. Like I said, this unit holds some impressive effects for under $500.00.

I have 2 of these, but only use 1. But I'm like that with all my gear. I always have an extra amp in the truck, extra mics, extra guitars, etc..... I play in a hard working band and we travel quite often so I NEED gear that works. I've heard about reliablity issues with this unit, so I went ahead and bought 2. I'll say this, I've never had a problem with the unit. I can see that the programming wheels are flimsy, and they even pop off from time to time, but everything still works as it should. I have both units racked up in a flight case, which is where they should be.

I don't rely heavily on effects. But when I need some delay or chorus, this is my baby. I also have been experimenting with using the levels and EQ in the G-major as a solo boost. Haven't tried it live yet, but maybe soon.
I have been playing guitar for 18 years, and in bands for 14 years. I'm kind of a Boss addict. I have used Boss pedals over the years, but let's face it, a rack unit that sounds damn near as good as analog pedals....is ideal. I use 2 G minor pedals for my switching. I use them in "stompbox" mode, usually employing one effect at a time. The g minors could be designed better, but it's not too bad. My signal chain is:
Guitar (Les Paul Classic w/EMG 81+60, PRS McCarty Signature, 1978 Fender Stratocaster, Custom Tele, Flamekat, Mexi Strat w/EMG 81+DiMarzio Steve Morse, etc....I have lots)into Sabine 7100 Rack tuner, into X-Wire wireless, from patch panel on rack, into Boss V-Wha, into Digitech Whammy, into Boss Compressor, back to amp (Marshall TSL or Hughes & Kettner Triamp). I use a Hughes & Kettner 4x12 cabinet with greenbacks. I use 2 G minors for controlling the G major, and an Ernie Ball volume pedal as an expression pedal for the G major. All pedals are mounted on a Furman pedalboard. I use a patch panel on my rack, plus the patch panel on my Furman. It's a pretty slick rig. I'll have some pics up shortly at www.buzzrocks.net

I used this with the Behringer FCB1010 Foot Controller and getting them to work together was a sinch. It went through all the factory presets when I plugged them into eachother (midi out on the foot controller to in on the G Major) and setting up the presets for whatever number on the foot controller I want is simple, once you read the manual. Getting the expression pedals to work with the effects is my obsticle now, so I give it an 8.

This thing is very intuitive and easy to use. However, I'm giving it a 7 simply because the manual really sucks. Even after reading all the complaints about the manual, I can't believe that TC hasn't done anything about this. They could give one employee one full day to update the damn thing and put it on line. Hell, I'd do it myself for a modest fee.
Editing patches is very easy. Some people complain that there are "too many editing options" which I think is ridiculous. Come on people, do you want TC to decide how you want your patches to sound? No. They put those options in there so you can come up with your own patches. Yes, there are a lot of adjustable parameters for reverb for instance. If you don't know what these mean, learn them!!! You have to put some time into it.
I personally like the editing inner & outer wheels. They're done well. I haven't had a problem with mine yet, but I can see how they might be delicate. I take very good care of all my equipment. For each effect you simply double click the button corresponding to that particular effect, and then you turn the "outer" right side wheel to go through each sub category/parameter of the effect, and use the inner wheel to edit the actual subcategory/parameter. Very simple.
I upgraded to the 1.27 software and it couldn't have been easier. I'd say that after one full hour of intense use, anyone can have this thing down pretty well.

My amp is the Mesa Boogie Nomad 45. It has a parallel effects loop which caused me some problems in the beginning. what I had to do to fix the problem was turn the FX mix on my amp up to 100% (the mesa manual says that you should put the fx processor at "all wet" and keep your FX mix on the amp as close to 10% as possible so that you have 90% pure tone and 10% effects in order to avoid coloring your tone too much-don't do this with the G Major, it doesn't work) Even with the effects mix at 100%, this thing does not color my tone too much at all. Any effects will color your tone somewhat, and I'm very picky about my tone, but this thing is very transparent. When I was originally trying it out wit my effects mix at 10%, I put the "kill dry" on on the G Major, but it was drastically reducing the volume of my amp even with the G Major's input and output knobs cranked. The only way to fix it was to turn the "kill dry" off, set it to consumer, and turn the FX mix on my amp to 100%, essentially turning it into a serial loop. DO NOT USE THE G MAJOR WITH A PARALLEL LOOP.
This thing definitely sounds very professional. Come on, they're the exact same effects that Robert Fripp uses!!! I'd much rather have a full set of analog pedals, and use the Gmajor for a backup, but I can't afford that. These are the best digital effects I've heard. The delay sounds smooth and natural. The reverb sounds great, I had to spend some time with it to get it to sound like a true spring reverb, but it sounds very good now. The chorus is pretty good, not fantastic but it'll do the trick for sure. I mostly use it very subtley to touch up my sound. I don't use flanger ever, I don't like this one, but I don't really like flanger. Some people have complained about the phaser, but I think it's superb. It really sounds good. The autowah sounds great. The problem with some people is that they don't spend enough time tweaking it. I use the Analogman bicomprossor in my rig for compression which just can't be beat. Therefore, I don't use the compression on the G major. The noise gate is excellent. I'm giving it an 8 because I'm one of those who feels very strongly that high end analog effects are generally superior to digital.

OK, I've got a story. Like I was saying earlier, I was having problems with it in my loop, the volume of the amp, etc. I used TC's interactive website and none of the questions addressed my problem, so I emailed them. i told them EXACTLY what kind of amp I was using, that I had a parallel effects loop, and I explained the problems I was having. It took them THREE DAYS to respond, and get this, their response was:
"We need more information, please tell us what kind of amp you're using and whether you have a serial or parallel effects loop."
I was PISSED when I read that, considering that my email, sitting right underneath their reply, told them this information precisely already. So, for the web support I give them a BIG FAT "1". Yes, you guys are incompetent and you SUCK!!!
After that, I called them. They don't have a 1-800 number. This loses them some more points big time.
The only thing saving them from a flat out "1", is the guy I talked to at support. His name was Brian and he couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. He walked me through what I needed to do and fixed my problem. I wish I could talk to someone like that more often.
Since the email thing sucked and they have no 800 number, I give them a "1". But, I give Brian a "10". That averages out to a "5".

I just wanted say from the top my real reason for posting this has to do with reliability so I am going to be brief in all other areas. Overall I found editing to be straightforward with everything laid out in the menus in a sensible way. There is a learning curve which is fine by me. It takes effort but it is worth it. It's a good learning experience and forces you to really get into how different effects work, which is a good thing.

As mentioned in other reviews here, very transparent. I use it in the serial loop of my JCM 900 with great results. Chorus, Reverb, and Delay stand out. Some effects that are included would be better off before the pre-amp as opposed to loop like the compressor, whammy etc. but it's an all-in-one unit meant to go in the loop. It would be nice if had 2 seperate signal chains like the Lexicon MPX G2, but the G2 is more money.

Here we go..
I have brought this unit in 3 times for repairs to the local service rep here in Ontario. I use my G-Major for gigs but I have a rack case and take care of it. I have owned it close to 3 years now. The first 2 repairs were for the 2 selector wheels on the front used to navigate the menus. Both of them malfunctioned. Obviously it's critical these work. There is NO doubt in my mind that there is a flaw with these wheels, so be prepared! My third repair was for the unit freezing. I believe that this issue in less common but is an issue none the less. I paid for my first 2 repairs and the 3rd was covered by the service rep.

I have to admit that TC have, in most ways, great customer support. They respond quickly and are somewhat sympathetic to your concerns. However, there is no frickin' way I should have paid for any of these repairs. TC should have admitted that some people at least have had the same issues. Looking at some of these reviews and through the internet etc. I am not the only one to experience these issues. There are some manufacturing flaws with the G-Major but of course I can not say how broad the problem is for sure. Only that there are some units affected by these flaws. Hopefully the number is low. TC should just come out and say how widespread the issue is - truthfully - then there would be no question. I guess they don't want to admit to any of this in fear of affecting their sales.

For the price it's hard to beat. Just be aware of it's reliability. If I was touring right now I would have a backup for it. Considering this, if it fails on me once more I'll sell it and look at a Lexicon or something.
Also, It would nice for TC if possible to make a PC based editor. It could be used for sharing settings over the net and quicker patch naming etc.

In a span of 10 years of being playing guitar, this is my first rack effects processor ever, and after looking for the coolest ones out there, I finally decided to get this one, cause it's a pro level effects processor at a really affordable price range.
Well, first of all you need to be really convinced and prepared to getting a G-Major or something like this, if you are a guitar player who use regular pedals, the G-Major will take you and your sound to another level, and you can still using your beloved stomp boxes as well!
Well, going to the point, I just can tell that if you have a little bit of previous experience with the basics of using multi-effect processors, the G-Major doesn't have to represent any kind of frustration or nightmare at all, BUT OF COURSE, TAKE YOUR TIME TO READ THE MANUAL, UNDERSTAND THE FUNCTIONS FROM HEAD TO FEET AND YOU'RE DONE, IS NOT HARD AT ALL, JUST BE PATIENT AND ENJOY.
Once you have clear everything, editing, storing, assigning values to the midi controller, getting out sounds will be a breeze.
Maybe the manual can be somewhat repetitive, but it's pretty clear.
Again... be patient!!!

I was looking for a strictly multieffects unit; no preamps, no useless tons of presets and no sound coloration, the G-Major acts exactlly what I expect, it's really friendly and accesible to me!!
I'll display my setup later, for those intrested, see below.
The G-Major has many different classic effects for guitar and you can handle them whatever you want, every block of effects has several parameters to tweak and combine your sounds, everything is up to you, do whatever you want.
I'm really amazed with the sound quallity of delays and reverbs, they'are great!!!

I've never been too serious about getting a pro effects processor before, I've been playing most of the time with my regular stomp boxes, and I really like them, but this time I decided to improve my overall rig, as the years go passing by, I've been trying and improving amps, effects, guitars, and everything, and finally my rig seems to reach it's highest level ever, I play with a serious band all over my country and we'll record the new record soon, so I need to be prepared with a good setup and stuff.
I've been playing for 10 years, I play and like every kind of music, but rock is my thing, as a guitarist my influences are Steve Vai(and everybody at the G3 jaja) Al DiMeola, Scott Henderson, Paul Gilbert among oooooothers!!!
What I love the most of the G-Major is the accesibility and transaparency of the entire unit, the options of handling it are endless, I control the G-Major with the G-Minor midi controller that works fine to me at this time, but maybe I'll replace it for a Rocktron All Access or something like that.
I've been editing presets for about three days, and every thing results very easy and functional, I'm really satisfied with this unit I can take out awesome sounds for all kinds of music and styles, with just a few rolls in the editing wheels.
Well, my setup is as follows:
I use Ibanez Guitars (JEM7VSBL and RG2020XTLB) connected to a Shure wireless unit. My amps are a Marshall JCM2000 TSL100 and a JCM900 4502 50Watt combo.
The next stomp boxes and the G-Minor midi controller are mounted and routed in a Furman SPB-8 pedalboard and connected to the input of the amp:
Boss CS-3 Compressor/Sustainer
Digitech XP100 Whammy Wah
Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive
Ibanez Tone Lok PH-7 Phaser
Boss NS-2 Noise Supressor
The next components are mounted in the rack:
Shure wireless reciver
Rack Ryder power conditioner and light module
TC Electronic G-Major (connected to the effects loop of the amp)
EBTech Hum Eliminator Box (connected between output of the
G-Major and Return of the amp)
Well, that's it, as you see, I try to keep it simple but colorful.
For those out there who are looking for an affordable and professional multi-effects processor, I'll instantly recommend the TC Electronic G-Major, and as I told in aaaallll my past reviews(and certainlly this review is the most valuable) ALWAYS GET THINGS WHICH WILL HELP YOU TO IMPROVE YOUR CREATIVENESS AND PLAYING.
HAVE FUN, BE PATIENT AND ENJOY WITH THE MUSIC.

This unit requires some time to get the best out of it. It has many tweakable parameters, which means more control and options to set it up to your personal preferences. Some of the preset-sounds are very usable, others you'd like to tweak a bit. Manual is ok, though might be a bit more detailed.

Set up: Ibanez ex guitar with EMG-pu's (EMG81 in bridge). Mesa V-twin preamp pedal, via record-out into G-major, into Alesis 2x 30-bands graphic EQ, into terratec dmx 6fire 24/96 soundcard. When I want I could also put an tc electronic triple-c multibandcompressor in the chain.
I was surprised to read review below, that g-major doesn't do anything? could it be not optimal conncted? I've read somewhere that it seems to work well with a preamp in front of it, or in an fx-loop. But not to put your guitar in directly into g-major. I find the chorus, delay and reverb units very well sounding. But it depends quite a lot on how you set them up!! Even the resonance filter can be very good once you use it well. At the moment I write, play and record rock music, sometimes with symphony-arrangements, and my sound is a mix of Evanescence and the Metallica&San Francisco Symphony. I've seen that also on a graphic display. Clean and chorus sounds are cool as well. You can recognize that Metallica have a couple of TC-units in their racks as well.
It's also nice to experiment with your gear. I've recorded some dance-tracks before, and I used the g-major on vocals!! and it came out very well. Made it all sound more professional.
FX-like phaser and compression are not as good as the chorus delay and reverb units. In some cases, you'd just like to have the option of an attack-time of 0.2ms. It doen't have a make-up gain function either, though that's fixed in the latest upgrade).
Cool thing is, that with my setup, the deep bass preset sounds very very close to Van Halens'intro bass in 'running with the devil'.
Overall I find this unit very good sounding, and adding a professional touch, for a reasonable price (589Euro).

With intervals, I've been playing for about 14 years now. Apart from guitar, I play keys, bass, and do vocals sometimes as well. I play rock, alternative at the moment. I was surprised how great my total gear set up sounds right now. Remember that you must take time to dial in your 'perfect' sound. It took me some 2 intensive months tweaking my guitarsound into something beautiful. Definitely the 2:30 band graphicEQ, gives enormous control, to tweak your sound. And I was very surprised how well it sounds when tuning down my guitar into B-flat!!!, just to try and see what happens. Simply don't have that money to buy a 7-string, so try and experiment. It still sounds heavy, but defined and with that elusive tube dynamics.
Also on vocals it sounds very good. I use the triple-c compressor, to control dynamics. In the near future I will put a few songs on a homepage, I'll let those interested know.

Converters seem good. No noise, very little coloration. I'd be comfortable with it in an fx loop.
Phaser is top-notch. Delays are excellent as well. Whammy is decent. Tremelo etc are good. Chorus and Flanger are seriously lacking though, IMO.

My current set-up is either a Patrick Eggle L.A plus with E.M.G. pick-ups or a Yamaha Pacifica 821D through a Yamaha DG amp with various pedals between. As a seasoned effects user I was looking forward to introducing the G-Major into the chain; well, the word 'underwhelmed' doesn't do justice to my initial reaction to this unit. Anyone would do better to buy two or three pedals for a similar amount of money; yes, it works but not outstandingly: the chorus isn't quite there, the pitch-shifter is (snigger) mono-phonic (how stone-age is that), and as for the reverb well, I've heard buckets of nails sound more pleasing! It doesn't do anything! You know, I feel cheated; I'm a fool, I believed the hype. This a unit aimed at amateurs not real guitarists like you and I!

First of all, let me say that I'm still in the honeymoon period, so I probably should wait to write a review. So I'll try to temper it a bit! This is my first rack processor, so I have no basis against which to compare its user friendliness, or lack thereof. It was frustrating as hell, for the first hour or so, to figure out how the different dials work. I still don't understand why it has two parameter wheels. Anyway, once I figured it out, it's not too hard to get good sounds out of it. The parameters for some of the effects, particularly reverb, are still a mystery to me and the manual is no help there. It just says to experiment. All in all, it's reasonably easy to use.

This piece really comppletes my set-up. Here is the signal chain:
Guitars: PRS McCarty, Fender American Strat with Lindy Fralin Blues Specials, Carvin DC127 koa with Seymnour Duncans, Fernanded lawsuit vintage strat copy
Signal chain: Thomas Organ Crybaby (true bypassed), Ibanez TS9 Reissue, Maxon OD808, Channel 1 of dbx 215 dual 15-band EQ (bass cut, mid boost), Mesa Heartbreaker head modified by Voodoo Amps, effects loop send to old Ibanez AD9 analog delay (short slap back), G Major, channel 2 dbx 215 (to add a little bass back), effects loop return, Mesa 2X12 Recto cabinet with Vintage 30s and Weber Beam Blockers. Phew!
I bought the G Major used on Ebay, because I figured that I could get my money back if I didn't like it. I was really concerned that it might hurt my tone based on some of the reviews here and the fact that it converts the entire signal to digital (wet and dry). It does seem to affect the sound, but I notice more impact in the dynamics. I don't think it makes it 'sound digital.' Let's face it, we all hear differently and our set-ups are different. For me, I think the G Major really improves my set-up. There are still enough dynamics, but it seems more controlled and professional sounding. So far, I am using the reverb, delay and noise gate a lot, and the chorus a little (I am not a big effects guy). Also I use the parametric EQ, which is really cool. When I switch from my humbucker guitars to my strats, the mids are a little grating, so I set up a block of patches that use the parametric EQ to cut the mids just a bit. It works really great. I've started to work on patches to experiment with parametric EQ for different sounds, like really boosting 1K for an Allman Brothers kind of midrange honk. It's a really nice feature for a time-based effect unit. All of the effects sound really nice to me, but I've never owned a rack multi-effects unit. I still use my AD9 for slapbck, but I add the G Major's dynamic delays with a longer delay for some patches and I really like it. The unit seems really quiet to me - certainly didn't add any noise. The built-in tuner is also really cool.
I'll give it a 9. I can't give anything a 10 anymore!

My time is up to contributed to this awesome forum. Let see, I will try to make a good review here, I look at these reviews so many time before buying the unit and I must admit I was very confuse at the end if I should buy it or not. People with a minimum of experience with processors can maybe find it tricky to learn, the manual is Ok but could go more in details on what certain parameters exactly do.
A little Hint on the parametric EQ, to access this feature double click on the Noise gate button, it took me a while to figure out this. It? maybe my own fault.

You?ll have all the effects that you will ever need. The unit sound amazing the effects are really good but some like the delay, will take a while to master, because there are so many parameters to set, but it can be use with the preset and by tweak the repeat parameters a bit you should be OK. To the people who say that this unit make there sound to process, well, this is a processor, that is why they call it that way, use pedal if you want to have a grunge sound, use this unit if you want to sound like a pro. This will bring you amp to life. I can?t speak for every body and I did not try it on all the amps out there, it is possible that it sound different on different amp or is not compatible with your amp. I really which that there was a power full EQ in this unit, that would make it the ultimate processor, so an external EQ is needed if your amp or preamp cannot achieve to shape your sound properly, the parametric EQ in the unit will give you extra fizz in your distortion if you are lacking it and also give character to your sound. In my opinion, I think that the distortion does not have is place in a processor, it should be in a separate unit, this said for the all in one box do it all (think when it break down, you loose every thing).
As far as comparing this unit to his big brother the G force, I could not have access to it to compare them, But with the satisfaction that I have with the G major, I can not justified spending the amount of money needed to buy the G force, unless you are getting sign by a record label or you can spend that amount of money without looking back on it, then I would consider it, but else buy the G major.
Similar product out there:
Rocktron Xpression and his brothers of the Rocktron family
Tc Electronic G force
Eventide Eclipse
Take not that I haven?t tried those unit and I only suggest those unit by reading reviews.
For the people that are interested to know what type of music I play, as I been trying to figure out what kind of sound the people posting review were getting out of this thing.
I play mostly Dream Theater, Metallica, Megadeth, Queensryche.
So far I can nail down the sound of Justice for all of Metallica and Scene from a memory of Dream Theater and Empire of Queensryche without a sweat.
Also take in consideration that if you have a weak link in your set up, it could make this unit sound bad.

I haven?t had any problems in the 3 mouths period that I own this unit but has a precaution I turn off the unit using the power button on it before I power down my rack system. Just to prevent any issue as some people have experiment and reported below.
Another thing, it is not built like a Tank, treat it well and I am sure it will last.

For me it has save my rack system and ended 10 years of spending and frustration to find the sound I was looking for, the parametric EQ combine with a graphic EQ can do wonders for you, I can get any sound that I want, and now I see myself turn down the gain on the preamp which I use to lack and now I almost have to much, I feel that for the first time I have no limitation in what I can achieve with my system. This was the icing on the cake when I installed this unit in my system and I been playing a lot more since I bought it.
For those interested, this my gear set up
Marshall JMP-1
Alesis Quadraverb GT (use the EQ only) plugs into the effects loop of the JMP-1.
Digital Music Corp. GCX Guitar Audio Switcher
G major plug into the GCX Guitar Audio Switcher and the JMP-1 output is going true the GCX then to the power amp. (The GCX can remove the G major from the chain if I don?t want it) little hint for the peoples having problem with the fact that there sound is process all the time.
Korg DTR-1 guitar tuner
Tubeworks Mosvalve 962 power amp
Randall XLT 4x12 cab vintage 30
Digital Music Corp. ground control
I?ve been playing for 25 years and I have been true to much gear
and I hope my review will help make your choice and I would definitly buy it again if I had to replace it.

Initially I found it to be quite involved to program. The manual isn't too bad but I found it better to choose the best clean sound patch that suits your rig and build your other sounds from there.
Editing was very easy because of only one sub menu each effect to reach your settings.
I updated my unit via midi with the latest firmware version 1.27 from the TC site and it is a vast improvement. If your unit locks up in any way when updating the software you must remove the power cord for a minute and reinsert before attempting the download again.

I am using an Ernie Ball EVH through a Trace Elliot Speed Twin all valve combo. Gain and channel switching on the amp. ADA MC-1 midi controller
Man, what a sound. I have this unit absolutely kicking ass by going into the routing menu and setting it to serial routing. The next menu is called routing lock which locks ALL presets to serial also. This is where I think some previous guitarists are having problems. Leave it at serial all the way.
On my amp I use the effects loop and set the switching on the amp to serial also. This is the only setup that works for me, I have problems with the noise gating setup and sensitivity if I don't have it set this way. If I didn't have the effects loop on my amp I would have to resort to a Rocktron Intellifex LTD (second best unit I've had).
Noise gate is the best I've ever had. I set the sensitivity to around 30-40 for solo patches and lower the threshold for less gain/overdrive settings. For clean sounds I have it set to soft knee so the gate hardly kicks in.
Delays, choruses and reverbs are fantastic. Shimmery lush choruses are too good.
Flanger and phaser are it's weak points but I haven't gone into depth with them yet. Not analog sounding. Very bitey and thin.
Compressor is OK.
Vibrato and tremolo works really well. A good leslie sound must be in there somewhere with some tweaking.
Harmoniser is nice as an octaver but not intelligent.
The on-screen tuner is excellent.
I haven't experimented with the whammy function.
I keep the dB setting at factory level -6 dB and increase it for my lead settings (an alternative to using gain switching on your amp or having to buy a boost pedal, works great like this).

This is a unit you certainly have to study and study again to gain it's maximum potential. Just like any elite piece of equipment. If you expect to get amazing sounds straight away then go back to a pedal setup. Be patient with it and it will be your best friend. I feel sorry for the guys that have sold their unit because of lack of experimenting. Bad move....
I've been playing pro for 20yrs and I sell my gear just to keep up with the latest stuff (GAS). This is one that's staying with me because it has too much to offer. I will be using it with a Peavey 5150 stack soon.
I can't wait to explore its maximum potential. There's a lot of value in this unit.

It's very very easy to use as I'd used rack effect. You can double click to edit any data. Each effect has several parameters to edit , sometimes I think it's too many and can't diffentiate by human ear.

My setup is gibson lespaul custom or Fender strat plus deluxe '91 , JMP-1 , rocktron intellifex online , TC.electronic G-major , mesa 20/20 , 2 mesa 1x12 rectifier cabs , monster cable
G-Major ,It's very digital sound. I don't like it. It coloured you guitar sound. no transparent
Drop out when you change preset and routing at the same time.
Chorus sound like interval chorus , sometimes you hear dry sound , not continue.I have to use detune to continue sound
Delay is good.
Flanger , phaser are bad both.
Reverb is OK
Pitch if you use pitch as octave , whammy it's OK , but if you use as harmonizer it doesn't work because you can't control pitch level via midi.
The whole sound is dump , not clear .Intellifex is much better if you use just chorus delay reverb ducker.

I run a warmoth guitar with a Duncan Hotrails(neck) and Duncan Invader (bridge) through a Marshall MG 250DFX with the TC in the effects loop. I really like the range of sounds particularly the ones that are true stereo (chorus, ping-pong, etc.). They are so clear and really ring. I am a big rush fan and that kind of range of sounds that Lifeson gets was what I was interested in. I am really quite impressed with the range of sounds available. It works well with my amp which surprisingly has a serial effects loop.

It was all I was hoping it would be and is the only processor I have for effects. It covers everything I want. The pitch shifting stuff is terrific. My rack goes from ETA power conditioner, dbx 31 channel mono EQ, alesis compressor, TC Electronic G Major and final a BBE sonic maximizer. I only do home recording now and have been playing for 18 years. The range of hard rock to clean jazzy stuff is the range (prog rock stuff) and really like it. It would be cool if they stuck another 100 preset on it. I really am happy with it.

You can get as complicated as you want with this - you don't need a computer science degree (but it helps). I've created my own patches, and saved them via midi to my linux box -- btw, you don't need fancy software for bulk dumps to linux just "cat /dev/midi > backup.syx" and then issue a dump on the g-major - flawless - you can even edit your patch names in a hex editor, and dump'em back in.

Unit works as advertised, other than an occasional glitch which happens after a couple of hours or so, rather randomly, but always after a program change.. It suddenly stops producing sound in series and semi-series mode - the only way to fix it is with a power cycle, which, luckily only takes 2 seconds or so. The chorus/delay/reverb blocks basically stop registering level (ppm), and there's nothing you can do about it.
If anyone else has this problems, please followup or drop me a line - thanks!

The interface is Not that easy to learn. This thing IMHO does way to much. So many options to absorb in deciding how to set it up.
Once You learn it it is fairly easy to use, but it takes time
to absorb it all.
The manual could be better; it doesn't suck ( I cursed it out at first) it is a little thin on some details.
You have to use their web site Q&A Ex.
If you don't turn it off from the front switch you lose any patches you just changed.
The reverb has way too many parameters to be easy: ex. Pre delay, Decay, Size (Small , med , large), Hi color, Lo color, Hi Factor, lo factor, room Level, Reverb Level, Diffuse, Mix, and output level. And thats after you select from Spring, Hall, Room, or Plate type reverbs! Tell me you can set that up in 30 seconds! I spent hours screwing with those parameters: but you do get very good sounds: needs a choice of interfaces: basic, and pro: the basic should be like on an amp (1 knob intensity).
Once you get the basics the patches are easy to set up.
Had it a couple of years now. I am keeping it.

Mesa 20/20. Tried to run it through the effects loop, but I

I play all styles. If it was stolen I'd need another one I don't
know anything better for the price/performance.
The G-miner is nice (it does a lot) but it can't do it all at once so you need a midi-control board to change patches. I use the G-miner for effects on/off bost, and mute (to tune with the built in tuner, did I mention it has a built in tuner?).
Overall I like it very good sound very clean, but it takes a bit of work to programm. Digital interface are not like stomp boxes. With
a stomp box you have a few knobs right in front of you, and each does one thing, you set im and stomp. It seems with all digital interface its a challange to figure what combination of buttons does what. And how many menus will you have to dig through to get at what you need. The TC does have quick acces to individual effects levels to quickly fine tune the mix.

My purchased version is the v 1.11. Really easy to understand almost every parameter, obviously MIDI can be a little bit more difficult. The reverb parameters are as flexible as only TC Electronics would do it. The only problem is ?what you want of this unit? ?where are your limits? The manual is one of a children's kind to learn, so nice, but it's better to explore the entire unit by yourself, in a few hours you are running with your setups, the user ones. Factory presets are really a matter of taste (I don't like them much more) but this is a good basis to start. The G Major does not colour the sound, add here, eliminate there and your ears will do the rest. The EQ is as enough as I expected, TC added this parameter only a few months ago into the noise gate parameter (even so are fully independants); Maybe an external Eq rack (DbX 215 or 231) or pedal would be really a good help. The chorus is the one parameter that is more critical, need to be in combination with a good reverb. The pitch shifter parameter is one of a kind, this unit really rules in terms of shifters!! So the Delay parameters are really good, but they need a little more comprehension and learning. The rest of the parameters (filters-phasers-etc.) are there, they are good elements in addition to the strongers (pitch-delay-reverb). There is no distortion and that's a pitty, but maybe this is good to create your own sound in addition to yor pre amp distorter. This is a personal matter of taste but all in all, TC rules when you need reverb quality!! Important: This unit is a temptation when looking for affordable ones.
Sound Quality
:

An important choice is to have a pre amp unit to switch the G Major (anyone said the TriAxis?), but if you don't this is not a problem.. Add your multi effect stomp box or distortion unit through the amp guitar jack and the TC through the send/return loop. You'll be ready to rock!! Apart from the G Major, my rig is actually composed of two guitar (Ibanez S370 with Seymour's & and Cort Viva Gold with Di Marzios), an amp (Hugues & Kettner Tube edition with 2x12AX7 pre tubes and 2xEL84 power tubes) and various stomp boxes (Zoom 505II whenever not a Zoom Driver and Marshall Shredmaster). I play mostly from Heavy Metal to Progressive as well as Rock and Blues or Funky. My favourite artists are Steve Vai, John Petrucci, Steve Morse, Brian May or Steve Ray Vaughan among others and groups like Dream Theater, Queen, Foo Fighters, etc. To get the sound of those guys you need years of experience (so a good pair of ears) and the setup will do the rest.. Get the basic sounds with a G Major is more of the feel of a game. In a few months I'm going to add an Eq rack unit (perhaps dbx) because eq helps a lot to get these artists sounds as well as gadgets (parallel/phase circuits, etc.)
Reliability
:

I think this unit is goog and reliable enough to make a tour.. Of course I would include it in my rig if I were a pro and needed to save some money.. You can fully depend on it because it's a MIDI one, and you have the option to control it through a pedal board. The two relays option included helps a lot to start the channels of your amp or rack devices.

It's a pitty that it has no distortion parameters, but this is in order to save money I think. A personal comment: be careful with the cables, sometimes these are the true fonts of noise and not the rest of the gear.

The sounds are exactly what I was looking for. I don't use too many effects - just delays, reverbs, and the gate. Some chorus on clean. I basically took presets, edited them, saved, and that's all I needed. I use it with a Peavey Rockmaster pre and a Peavey classic 50/50 poweramp (soon to be replaced with a VHT 2902). My f/c unit was a RFX midibuddy 128 until recently.

I was happy for 2 years but now I have problems. All I had to do was connect the RFX f/c, fire it up and gig with it. Never failed me. Now it's working part-time.
If I step on my f/c it may change patches - may not. It's moody now. Sometimes it changes to a whole different patch. Grrrrrr! It's become a real pain live. I borrowed a Fender Cyber f/c and I still have the same issues. I switched midi cable and still have problems. I reboot it several times during shows. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. If I manually make a selection from the G-Major front panel it works fine. I think my problem lies in the midi input. It may have crapped out over time. I'm waiting for a response from TCE. Anyone else have a suggestion or similar issue?

I love it when it works and can actually limp along with it's current malfunctioning. I'm not a multi-pedal user and like having all my effects off the floor. I would possibly replace it but I'd rather have it fixed. I hate experimenting at my out of pocket expense. I hope I can get it back to working condition w/o costing me alot of money or downtime. For 2 years of flawless service @ $500 I know I've made my money back but I hate equipment failure no matter how long I've owned it.

just a comment for the CAE guy..
If you adjust the actual effects to 100% wet, you can adjust the overall output volume from the TC to the adjust amount of effects. To avoid the out of fase sound, just turn the output volume down on the actual patch, and you have just the original preamp sound..
The out of phase sound is horrible, but with just a few tweaks your unit will match the parallell configuration just fine.

- PSA-1 (Sansamp) & ADA MP-1 Preamp
- Marshall 9005 TUBE Power Amp
- Peavey CAB Equipped with Celestion Speakers Rating at 85W RMS each
The unit itself is not noisy....But remeber that if you use long cords or damage cords, noise will appear. Short Balance patch cords will help getting rid of noise. I found the noise gate very usefull and working as a charm, but you need tweaking before geting it right... I don't use a lot of effects on my rythm section, i usually use a little reverb and a bit of chorus... The pitch shifter is great and doesn't have a delay (cannot be heard) For the Prcie it's the best unit you can buy... There's too much to tell but read the other reviews and try one yourself... I was trying this unit out to do mainly delay in my rack setup. I have a CAE 3+ pre-amp and my effects are routed thru a Sound Sculpture switching matrix. This unit sounds synthetic like one of the other reviewers said. With my setup I run parallel so I didn't run straight thru it. You still can't get rid of this glitchy digital phase sound that you get in cheap processors. I called support and it turns out you can't completely dial the dry out! How stupid is that? Since the dry is not analog you get that out of phase thing happening. Sounds awful!

I would give it a 10 but I'm reserving that for the unkown. It is very quiet. The factory presets may scare some users away since they are mostly useless (at least for the type of music I enjoy). A few minutes of playing with the settings and you will begin hearing some awesome sound. There are plenty of options available within each effect to please just about anyone.

I play hard rock / satriani / lynch / ... style music and I was woried that the unit would not get that sound for me. After goiing through all of the presets, I decided to try editing one. After a few minutes I was blown away by the sound I was able to get. I was able to dial in a thick, rich, beautiful sound that was even better than I hoped for. I wasn't sure if I should go with multiple high-end pedals or a box like this. I am soooo glad I chose this unit.
For the users who feel that their tone gets colored by this unit, I don't know what to say. I don't know if my tone is affected but if that's what I'm hearing comming out of my amp, I like it! I like it alot!
I would definitely get another one if it were stolen / lost. The delay / chorus / pitch effects are excellent. I'm glad they didn't throw in a distortion effect - I've never heard a good sounding digital disortion in my life. The only thing I wish TC would change is to provide their own foot controller for it (not the G-Minor, something a little more useful).
I recently had a Boss GT-3 (I think, maybe GT-5?). I returned it the day after I brought it home. I was so depressed after trying everything I could to get the Boss unit to sound the way I wanted it to. The played up the COSM thing so much, I thought I was going to have the ultimate heavy sound but got a lame tin can piece of crud. The G-Major is in a much higher class than what I have heard from the Boss multi-effects units (and I really like the Boss pedals).
If you are not sure about this unit and you have access to try one out, try editing some of the effects (double click the effect button,...). I will warn you that you will probably become hooked.

I basically want to spell out the difference of the GMajor vs. the GForce here.
I initially saw the GMajor and was "bummer out" cause here I had this hugely expensive GForce and out comes this GMajor at a way lower price. I thought "How will I ever get the value out of the Force now?" I eventually bought a Major and used both the Major and the Force side by side. I used the Force for many years. Sold them both now and am actively looking to buy another Force-NOT a Major. here's why.....
Sound Quality
:
9
The sound quality IS better on the GForce even though it is an older unit. I was wrong hen I assumed the newer converters would be better. The major sounds more thin and digital and the Force sounds all around better.
I like the Major's user interface better because it's easier to navigate around and do things quickly. However part of the reason is because the Force has so many more things that can be adjusted. WAY more control. The Major gives you a few options but the Force gives you complete control. Both have there quirks and I had to email tech support many times to get things set up to work correctly on BOTH units. I spent HOURS working with these things.

GForce vs.GMajor
GMajor: ( * means unique to the specified unit)
*Receives midi clock
Easier set Delay and Reverb spillover control
Tuner always on-neat! (Force can be set that way)
*Bass/7 strg or 6 strg tuner settings and Fine tune (studio) or Coarse adjustment (live)
*Ability to choose cable types (tip/ring sleeve thing)
*Runs at 48k
or 44.1k
*?? amp channel switching jack
Made in Thailand!!
GForce:
Everything the GMajor does except anything I marked * (to the best of my knowledge)
Diatonic Harmony
Card Slot to easily store/backup presets
Ability to order your effects blocks as you choose
Cool ?write your own? banner display
Made in Denmark
More control
All around a great unit. I reccommend it! if you like the Major move up to the Force sometime. Expect better sound quality as well.

I want to make a comment on another review posted before me.
I had the same problem as the previous guy, the chorus effect on my unit was not working when using it in a mono effects loop. When I called TC about it,they asked me for my serialnr and they immediately acknowledged that this was due to a production error.
They informed me that only G-Majors with a serialnr between 3411771 and 3412671 potentially have this problem and that they had informed all affected distributors and dealers immediately, os many of these units were recalled before they even hit the stores, and they told me the problem is easily fixed.
Check the support section on there website for more info

I think their support is great. Sometimes mistakes do happen and they were pretty upfront about it and immediately offered help to rectify the problem. And that's all that counts !!!

I'm writing this review to bring attention to a product recall that TC Electronic should be making some time soon.
I recently bought a G Major from a local Guitar Center, took it home, set it to run in mono in the effects loop of my amp, and found that some of the presets simply did not work.
One of the TC Electronic tech support people informed me that an unspecified number of G Major effects units have troubles with the circuitry that supposed to detect when the pedal is being used in mono. The rep also asked me the serial number of my G Major, and then came back and informed me mine was one of the units affected.
What the rep would not tell me was which units have been affected, and I wound up wasting about 2 hours in traffic to buy yet another defective unit from another Guitar Center.
When I contacted TC Electronic again, I was told they really don't know which units are affected, as this problem is in its early stages.
I've yet to hear what the unit actually sounds like when it's working properly. I'll review it again if I ever know for sure I'm dealing with a functioning effects processor.
FYI: If you plug into your G Major effects unit in mono and you see only one input meter responding to the input, you have a defective unit. When all works well, plugging into the mono input only will result in both input meters responding to input.
Hope this helps.

When I asked a tech person at TC Electronic how so many units could leave the factory without being able to work in mono mode, the mode most people will use in dealing with a guitar amp, the tech told me the items roll off an assembly line and are not tested that way.
I wonder if the units are tested at all?

Amazing sound quality, especially the delays and delay modulation based effects. I went from using a variety of high quality pedals (fulltone, Boss, Maxon and line 6 & Dunlop/MXR) to using just this unit in the effects loop. I wish I would have made the switch years ago when this first came on the market.
I use this unit with my Mesa boogie Maverick amp in the effects loop, along with a HUSH triple C noise suppressor. I initially had the gain structure for the fx loop set up wrong, and was getting a phasey god-awful tone. after reading the amp's manual again, I made some adjustment to the FX loops' gain structure and I love the tone of the amp again. When set up properly, the g-major doesnt effect it at all. I do still use my cry-baby wah and my Fulltone FDII for solos or heavier distortion in front of the amp.
Suprisingly, I like to use the compressor patch. I use compression on ly on clean channel patches. Having the compressor after the preamp allows the front end of the amp to be overdriven naturally by the guitar's dynamics.

Unlike many digital processors, this one is quite easy to get the hang of. Especially for un-editing familiar folks like me. Push a few knobs to get the the effect you want to change, scroll the wheel for your presets or use the essential g-minor midi pedal to call up your presets. Not much to it and it will change your amp channels too.

I have 16-bit digital and even 8-bit digital stuff that sounds good. However, the 24-bit digital sounds very life like, clear and has absolutely no noise. For the tonal purist who will insist analog will always sound better than digital, he/she may not be satisfied with the G-Major. To my ears, however, the G-Major is very accurate and every effect sounds good. The only effect I had a problem with is the compressor. Maybe because it's thrown in with the modulation. I just can't get a strong enough compression sound out of it for doing country style licks, but hey, for the price, it's not bad. In addition, there is virtually no noise when used in the effects loop of my amp unless I have the effects loop levels turned up too high. Very quiet and effective effects package.

I play mainly blues, country, jazz and classic rock. I was quite impressed with the G-Major. If you are looking for modulation effects and don't want to compromise quality of sound for price, then the G-Major is the perfect companion for your set up. Very versatile and useable for just about anything. TC makes an easy to understand owners maual and also sends out a neat CD with some sound examples of the G-Major in action. The only thing you really have to do is spend some time learning the different effects and what each control button or knob does, although it's pretty easy right out of the box.
With useage of the G-Minor midi controller, which is now thrown in as a promo for getting the G-Major, you can not only control your effects, but you can also change the channels on your amp. Talk about cool. This especially helpful when playing live and going from a clean rhythm to an overdriven solo while also. You no longer have to try and step on a multiple array of pedals when changing. One step of the switch can get you there.
With all that being said, I don't think this is up there with the invention of the wheel or light bulb. However, the G-Major is a pretty damn good digital processor that is less expensive than the, very less than stellar and non-practical Digitech Valve FX I invested in several years ago. I even think the G-Major sounds as good as the G-Force that costs more than double what the G-Major costs. Maybe a few less features, but sonically, I'm sure stumped for coming up with a reason to spend the extra money on the G-Force.
TC Electronics hit a home run with the G-Major, and I think if you're looking for a way to have accurate sounding multiple effects in a compact, easy to use and affordable package that can be used live or in the studio, the G-Major delivers in a big way. Sure some individual effects pedals have greater effect range, or have their own unique vibe, but c'mon! Be objective and understand the versatility and convenience the G-Major offers over having lots of pedals. Because to me, burning it up on stage is much better than burning a hole in your pocket.

I run a Viper 301 ESP through a metal zone MT-2, to the gmajor, and finally to my amp (yes, no a great rig, just waiting for my new amp)
with my little 15 w amp, i can say the sound is AMAZING.
the unit DOESN'T change my tone at all.
The effects are awesome, mostly the trio REVERBS/CHORUS,FLANGER/DELAY.
These three effects block are really great quality, better than any pedals imo. the effects are warm, not sounding digital.
I've tried to use this unit in stereo, what a big shock!
If you like stereo, this unit is for you! listening to delays pingpong, or using a panner adds some real dimention to your playing. You fell the music !
I would say the the sound quality of this unit is really what makes it excellent, just try them, you'll understand!

This unit is reliable, always working, with a solid construction. I think it won't break. However, i have had a problem i had to fix alone:
i shut down the unit in bypass mode, when i powered it up againg, nothing was working, it would only show a star symbol. i though the unit was dead.
in fact, i had to reset the unit, and replug it, and then it worked.
that's the reason why i only give 6 on 10 in reliability.

I mostly play metal, but when i play some cleans, or when i need effects, the unit is here for me. For the price, this unit is INCREDIBLE !!!
i must add something: the G-FORCE, the other multi-effect of this brand, is more than twice the price, but had a slower CPU !!!!
yes, its true gforce's effect are better, but very slighty, because some of the algorithms of the gmajor are almost the same, and the gmajor adds new fonctionalities over the gforce!!!
i think that the gmajor is a "given" gforce, as they are almost identical !!

I have used it trough a Marshal and Fender. As stated on their website the G Major was made for a serial effects loop so on the Marshal's parallel loop it is a little more difficult to get the effects out, but when they are dialed in they are very nice. The Fender sounded superb with choruses, phaser, tremolo, etc...All of the effets have already been scrutinized so I won't take up any more time. There is a bit of "coloring" of the sound with the G Major. It is not so much that it detracts from the overall sound to a large degree. Overall I am very happy considering the price tag.

This is why I am submitting the review. Below another reviewer said his G Major's LCD screen went blank and had some other anomalies. I had a similar problem. The problem started after about a year and a half. The LCD went blank, would come on, go blank and it seemed to depend on how many effects I was trying to have on at one time. When this started I could only use two of the effects on the top row at a time i.e. the Noise Gate/Compressor/Filter-Mod/Pitch. When I would try to use three of these at one time the G Major would turn off and back on - resetting itself. The G Major would still operate as it normally did except when it came to those particular effects and the number I would try to use. I'm glad this started at home - not at a show. I emailed and called TC Electronics and they said that it was probably a fried reset chip. He also went on to say that it was a problem he was familiar with - not something common or inevitable, just a problem he had seen before. It was covered under the warranty. It's electronic so it will probably have some type of problem at some point in it's life. That doesn't make it any better when it does happen though. It's still being repaired (it's only been a couple of weeks) so I don't know how it will react when I get it back. I'm sure it will be fine for a while.

When I needed to send in the product I spoke to Moises and he was also extremely helpful. The sound quality, price, and customer service save this product from getting a lower rating. My main complaint is not having a floor controller from TC Electronics to use with the G Major. Nevermind the g minor - blah. And at about $130.00 a piece I don't want to "daisy chain" them either as they have suggested. Other manufacturers seem to compliment their processors with a dedicated floor controller with a vast amount of functionality and flexibility. I would prefer that TC Electronics make a dedicated floor controller instead of hunting one down that will "work with it" except with some limited functionality. They lose some points here. However, at 500 bucks it is a good buy.

I came here to see if other owners are finding programming as difficult as on my GMajor: When editing, the parameter dial (outer ring on the dial on the right) doesn't properly click through from one parameter to the next. Often it doesn't change at all, when it does, it's a hit or miss affair.
On FX with lots of parameters - like my favourite, reverb - it's a real pain. And when I want to store patches, naming them is really annoying.
Seems to be just my unit, though, so I'll email TC and see what they say. I'll post an update later, but give it 5 for now.

I love the delay and reverbs on this - which is mostly what I wanted. Still trying to dial up a Peter Green spring reverb sound though.
The modulation FX are OK, but not stellar. Does a passable Trower 'Bridge of Sighs'. Not sure I've ever used the compressor.
Anyone who auditions this is going to be underwhelmed by the presets. Many are quite subtle - too subtle to hear properly in a noisy guitar shop.
It doesn't mangle my guitar tone (it sits between a MB Studio Preamp and a neutral solid-state power amp in my setup).

It is a little difficult to use at first, and programing can be a little difficult. I am still getting used to it and I wish I could just play more. The manual is very straight forward and set out in layman's terms.
TC does a very good job of telling you how to use the thing and explaining technical terms. Alot of the problem with it being difficult to use is that it has so many bells and whistles. That will be explained later. You really need a good midi pedal to use this in a band situation. The G minor will get you by, but with 100 presets and no user presets yet I would imagine that it would be a little difficult going to the different presets quickly within a song. I plan on purchacing the DMC ground control so that I can fully use this thing like indiviual stomp boxes, but still have a general effects setup for each song.

I don't feel that I need more effects in there, except I am thinking of getting a tube screamer. It sounds great. I love this thing, it gives a slightly "processed" sound, but still lets my amp breathe. I am currently experementing with using it in stero with my Fender prinston chours. But I haven't finished setting it up yet, and I'll let you all know how it works out. The chorus and reverb are outstanding. and the rest of the effects are

This is why Im posting. I have had trouble after 6 months of use. I gig weekly. Here are my issues.
The 1st problem I had was I would get no sound and would have to turn the unit off and back on again. The lcd screen would go blank or lock up. I sent the unit back to the factory and they said it needed a new reset chip. I got it back and all was well for about 2 months.
Occasionally i have the problem where my guitar signal is just cut off, when i step on my ground control unit, it resets and is ok.
My latest problem was the other night while I was in a solo my amp just started feeding back a very high pitch squeal/ It was not feed back because there was no gtr signal with it. I had to kick back my volume pedal and eventually just turn off everything. I cant afford to have these problems since I play every week. Im am thinking of scrapping the unit. If any of you have had any of these issues and know whats happening I would appreciate a reply.
Thx for reading!

I have talked with a guy named Phillip at the factory. He has always returned my calls and emails. He was very helpful, and he did fix the unit at no charge the first time. I am just afraid tc did not engineer a very robust product. I think that trying to cram all those great sounds into a box for $400 just is just too big of a challange and something has to give. I already placed a review a little further down. I wrote a negative review because of the sound altering bij the gmajor.
I looked around and found out that people with a mesa amp. and people with quality amps, cables and speakers could hear the difference.
so i did a test and tested my gmajor bypassed (so no effects and eq's are engaged) on various types of amps including my formula, 20/20 with thiele evm loaded mesa boxes.
in combo's head's and another gear using fxloops there was not a lott of tone loss. i listenend with good and mediocre cables and the difference was noticable. I used my rack with a 4x12 cab loaded with 4 celestion speakers and the difference was there although not very noticable.
so the evm speakers helped me hear the difference.
the only way to make the sound usable was to put the volume up till the indicators said that the volume was to high. and with this setting the vol. was to high to be usable.
I called TC and they couldnt really help me. they where very friendly and even offered to come to me or to meet me at the shop where i bought my gear.
tc recommanded a eq to put between the formula and the gamjor to see if there was a impedance problem and with this eq the problem was gone.
the eq was a eq without a true bypass. so the signal (analog) went through a vol. and then to the out. with the eq set to off.
with this I could use the eq as a mastervol. without altering the sound wich was good now.
and the impedance problem was gone.
Tc sended a mail to blaim mesa because the didnt give enough info about my amp's and the couldnt do anything for me from there.
so. i bought a preamp, a poweramp and a gmajor at feedback rotterdam, the netherlands. (the advertise the formula and the gmajor as the best rack set) and now i have to buy me a good graph. eq. wel....
thats not why i bought these amps an fx machine for...

very good. but because they say it is the mesa amp the didnt take any action. best thing to do would be offering me a raph rack eq for the price it would cost to make ad ship to me.
this way there would be no money loss for them and i would be helped.

no dynamics, to much hiss and noise. Sounds of the fx are okee but compared to my Lexicon Alex, it sounds like shit! I use it in my fx-loop of my 5150 head, and it does really effect the sound! even in the bypass mode. With the Alex I didnt need a noise gate but with this thing.... It is for amateurs!!

Umm, anyone that says this thing is hard to use is dumb and must have never used any other processor before. No it is not a foot switch with a knob for each setting it is a real processor that works and does what it is supposed to do. I don't see how they could make editing much easier for a single rack processor.
Manual explains everything
Some of the partches suck, but it is because I think the tried to show the capability of the effects with them not the quality of sound.

I have a Ibanez RG470 (new pickups and lots of mods) and a 1988 Mosrite > Fender Stage Master 160 > TC G-Major > G-Minor > ADA MP-1 Pre-Amp > Behringer Virtualizer Pro > Furman Power Conditioner is my current setup.
I have mediocre gear and am in the process of getting top of the line stuff with a pre > power > Cab setup. I can't wait to hear how it compliments it
No noise at all besides what is caused by my PRE...it is also VERY TRANSPARENT!!! IF YOU DISAGREE IT IS YOUR CABLES OR YOUR SETUP. NOT THE PROCESSOR.
Effects sound GREAT, the only time I think this processor wouldn't get by is if you are an over processed guitarist in which case...you shouldn't be playing guitar :-P

This thing is just over all great. I play progressive rock. "Dream Theater" type stuff in my band. We are a good band not one of those tone def people and this makes me sound great. And unlike any other processor I have ever had IT HELPS ME CUT THROUGH. I need that as I am a lead guitarist. To check out my stuff go to

This is real easy to use, very straight forward, but like all rack gear, a certain amount of time needs to be taken to get the sounds you want from it. If you read the manual and take 10 - 15 mins to get to know the we guy, you will get on fine!

I use a Vigier Excalibur Ultra with EMGs, a Fender Japanese Strat, and a Schecter A7+ into either a Line 6 Pod, then the GMajor, or with the GMajor in the loop of my Marshall AVT 150.
With the pod and the gmajor in series, everything is great - all the fxs do what you expect and more, but I particularly like the phasers, choruses, delays and reverbs. they all sound fantastic in a stereo setup. the other fxs are good too, but I don't use them too often, although the EQ is useful to have around. The compressor is slightly less useful, the one on the pods a lot better. the pitch effects surprised me - they track very quickly and smoothly, even following bends with ease, you can have two harmonys, pan them left or right with your signal in the middle, and put seperate delays on each one!
but this is no eventide, solong as you don't expect a real twin guitar sound, or an intelligent shifter, you wont be dissapointed.
With the Marshall, I have to place the GMajor in a parrallel loop, which is annoying, but not TCs fault! The reverbs and delays work fine with this, but the other effects don't - to actually hear the other effects, I have to turn the outputs and inputs up to full, and my Marshall doesn't like me doing this with any fx processors - you lose that all important tone. But that is more to do with the nature of the parrallel loop, rather than the GMajor. You don't believe me? If i put a delay on, the loss of tone only ocurrs on the original not being played. All of the delayed notes are chock full of MY tone!!!! Its something to do with the way the amps mix the dry and wet signals, or so ive read.
However, no loss of tone occurrs due to the GMajor, and it was made to run in series with a decent pre and power amp set up, so bare that in mind.
I am real happy with the sounds i can get out of this, and I can't wait till I can put it in a proper stereo rack system! I can't believe they made such a high quality unit for so little cash!

The unit is solid, but the knobs are all plastic. Having said that, its not like im gonna be throwing it about all that often - im sure it would take a fall and be ok, but im not gonna try any time soon. Oh, and my Shecter came off second best when my strap came loose. Not a mark on the GMajor, but a nice chip in my guitar!
I would rely on this unit, the only way most of this kind of equipment fails is if it overheats.

The websites great, lots of info, and a massive online Q&A for every product they make! They also replyed my emails very quickly. Upgrades are available for free from the site to download, all though mine came with the latest software pre installed, and with an updated manual too! This company doesn't just make the unit and then leave it, they constantly work on ways to make it better, and then give all that extra work away for free!!!!!

I play loads of different stuff, but mainly stick to bluesy rock and metal. Imagine Slash in Metallica, thats what im aiming for! Ive played for 7 years and have owned many a different fx unit, i went through the toys offered by zoom, progressed through a Digitech RP7 ( still love that guy! ) and a Boss GT6 - i still use that to practice trough, and it works great as a midi pedal board! Amps have always been Marshall.
This is the one fx unit I own that i would replace, were it stolen. Ill deffinately be sticking with TC Electronics when it comes to upgrading to something pricier, too. I have been thoroughly impressed by this little unit, and look forward to integrating it into the rack set up that I will eventually own......
Overall, great FX, great price, and there is enough scope to come up with some great sounds.

I write this review just to comlain about the reverb... (Sorry TC)
Chorus+delay, are 100% great (Ok, lets be honest the chorus is not as good as the famous pedal but allmost), the other effects are really ok (Haven't used the comp.),But.. the reverb is not at a professional level.
I use this with a Mesa/boogie Mark-4 in the effectsloop, in order to get the reverb as good as the other effects i connected it to a TC-electronics M-One via the Spdif-digital out. So togehter with the M-One it's Pro audio all the way but NOT without.

Please give us a better reverb and it should be a separate in/out for the dynamics part, I wan't the compressor before the guitar preamp, not after.

The TC Electronic G-Major is without a doubt the key ingredient in my rig. I can't imagine my tone without it. It does take some time to get use to the unit, and creating your own patches, and setting all the various parameters. The only reason why it takes some time, is that there's almost an infinite number of possibilities, and parameters to adjust and control in each effect. You will definitely find a setting you like though, just after some time spent becoming acquainted with this unit. The manual is very extensive and thorough, however, not enough explanation is given regarding some factors, like setting up with a MIDI preamp, and some things aren't explained as well as they could be. Overall, any delay's you may have in learning how to use it, are indeed worth it.

Incredible!! My signal path starts from either an ESP Lynch custom with Duncans, or an Ibanez RG200 with EMG's, into a Boss SD-1 to a Crybaby Wah-wah, into a Marshall JMP-1 -- Rocktron Hush IICX -- TC Electronic G-Major -- BBE 362 Sonic Maximizer -- Mesa 50/50 and finally driving a Marshall 1936 2X12 cab.
I'm very happy with the setup, and anyone using the G-major with the JMP-1, do yourself a favor and avoid the FX loop. Put it behind the JMP-1 in series. Much better!!! The noise gate in the G-Major is very good, although it can't be controlled globally, which results in adjusting the settings in each patch when changing volumes. This is why I have the Hush unit before it. The compressor works and is alright considering you would usually put a compressor before the preamp. The EQ section is solid gold. You can adjust the frequency, gain, and width of the lows, mids, and highs. I use it almost as an enhancer to build back any bit of my tone that can suffer from the Hush unit. It's only noisy when using the Chorus and Flange mixed at high settings. Keep in mind that you have seemingly endless control over many parameters in each effect type. The Chorus is very good once set to your liking. The Flange isn't particularly great, but it works. I don't rely on a flange much at all, so it doesn't bother me. The delay's are incredible, especially if using in a stereo setup. The reverbs are just as good. It can seem a bit digital when mixed at high settings, but it's not necessarily a bad thing. The best part is the Resonance filter, and Phasers. The resonance is my favorite effect, and you can really use it to beef up the sound and add an incredible low end chuncky nature to your palm-muted chords. I don't use the pitch shifters or Octaver, so I can't comment on it. For what I desire and need from a good FX unit, the G-Major delivers in every way. It's the most comprehensive unit for the dollar in my opinion. And again, it's the key ingredient to my setup. I will never part from it, unless moving up to a G-Force or Eventide.

Make sure you get it with the G-Minor footswitch, or are using it with some kind of MIDI footswitchable device. A fantastic unit for the dollar, great sounding effects for the ones I need and depend on (delay, reverb, chorus, phaser, resonance, EQ!!!). I highly recommend trying it out. I wish the noise gate could be controlled globally, but if you need a globally controlled noise gate, get a Hush unit from Rocktron. Can't imagine my setup without it.
