I can get Vai's wah sound specially when distorted, in clean mode it's ok but not so great for funk styles but for shredding it's beautiful. It doesn't have that boutique sound like Hendrix's, it's more modern sounding. I use it with my other Tech 21 stuffs Sansamp PSA-1, Trademark 60 and a bunch of other effects. There's a lot of negative feedback here regarding the sound, I'm sure everyone should be reading the reviews first before they buy the item, to be honest it's a great pedal if it fits your style. I guess if you play funk/alternative/pop then don't buy this pedal because it's not suited for it in my opinion, but if you play a lot of rock/metal then this is for you. I love the pedal specially when i leave it on mid-position to get that midrangy tone but just enough to pinch squealing harmonics and when stepped all the way forward it's not noisy like vox or crybabys.

Umm.. I think this is the only drawback on this product, it's made up of weaker material compared to crybabys and voxs, Imagine the silver part of vox's v847 i tried comparing it by tapping on the pedals and the killer wail sounded like a thin can versus the vox's sounded solid, but i think if your careful enough on you gear like not throwing it to the crowd or letting a 10 foot gorilla stomp on it, then it's safe. It also squeaks when i move the pedal back and forth but i think it can be resolved by putting some love juice on the pedal's bolts, you know what i mean, lol.

Like i said, it really matters what style of playing on what you will use this pedal for, i would recommend this for shredders/rockers/metalheads. Sounds great but not so sure about the quality it was made of, maybe that's why tech 21 suspended the production of this product to improve it. Hmm..but that's just me. Otherwise, it rocks! and plus it's cheap on ebaY! lol!

best sounding wah I have ever used. Love it to death, nothing can top it that I have played on, but then again I haven't had a chance to try out the Ibanez WH-10 that John Fruciante uses so I can't say it is the end of all wah sounds yet. good for funk and rock which is what I use it for. 9 because I have not compared with WH-10.

It is now going to go back to Tech 21 for the third time, first two being a dirty pot. Now it is going back because when I turn it on no signal comes out, put new battery in singal goes through when off but when clicked on it stops. angry me at band practice. If I had the money I would get a backup but I am currently getting married and can't afford to buy a new one. Horrible construction.

Best sounding wah I have ever played on. If only it was built in NY like the rest of their pedals maybe it would have been constructed better I have had the pedal for over a year now and have had it gone for about two months of it due to shipping and fixing from Tech 21. I bought the pedal when working at Musician's Freind (THE DEVIL OWNS THAT COMPANY, COMPLETELY CORPORATE DO NOT CARE ABOUT EMPLOYEES. EVIL PLACE TO WORK, BAD COMPANY TO WORK FOR. i STILL DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY ANYONE WOULD WANT TO ORDER AN INSTRUMENT WITHOUT PLAYING ONE. STUPID COMPANY.) sorry about rant. Anyways Tech 21 rocks and I will still use pedal even if it breaks down all the time.

Standard wah motion with traditional/Crybaby-style switch activation. Slider switch on the bottom allows you to switch between the high-cut, standard, and low-cut, but it's not particularly accessible on a pedalboard. I keep it on standard, so that's not really an issue. One thing that I haven't seen mentioned below is that this wah is actually smaller than almost any other wah I've seen -- nearly an inch and a half shorter than my old Crybaby. Players with bigger feet (I wear a size 13) should take note that it's definitely got a different feel than most other wahs.

Playing a Mexi Strat through a solid-state Fender combo. I run a Rat 2 before the wah and an Akai Intelliphase, Boss BF-2, Korg 301 delay, and Boss TR-1 trem after it.
Overall, this wah can sound a little frail. Really clears up and cuts nice if the Rat is driving it. I find the high-end setting a little too shrill through single coils, and the low end setting really doesn't have any balls with my Strat. I'm playing heavier strings (.54 low E), so that might be a little too much for it. Haven't tried it with 'buckers at all, which also might make a difference.
Standard setting provides some decent chops for both picking and chord work -- kind of a classic Crybaby sound, but with a tad more presence and brightness. Sounds great for early Alex Lifeson stuff (a la "By-Tor") and Rick McCollum (Afghan Whigs) riffs as well as 60s/70s funk, like Phelps Collins (of Bootsy and James Brown fame).

Had it for about a year now, and I constantly have to watch the jacks, which are located at the top of the wah. After two weeks, the hexnut on the output jack ripped off when I was disconnecting the cable (and not violently -- I take care of my stuff). The jack disappeared into the pedal, and I had to take it apart to put it back together. Happened again a few months later. Granted, small potatoes, but kind of a pain in the ass that lends to paranoia about the overall quality of the pedal. To be fair, it's a strong metal chassis and the wiring work inside appears very solid.

I play original rock songs, a little blues and R&B too. I've been playing for about seven years now -- only recereationally. Was looking for a wah to replace my Crybaby after the pot went south on me after a few years. I wanted to upgrade, but because I'm not a serious player, I didn't need Teese or Fulltone products or prices. Overall, I don't regret buying it, but I wouldn't spend more on this than $90 or so if I had to do it over again. It really is a decent wah on the whole. But just decent.

How easy? Easy, just put it inline between your guitar and amp and then make a motion with your foot by pressing and pulling your toe and/or heal up and down. If you have the desire to explore more of this pedals parameters, then look on the bottom and you will notice a small switch for deep or extended or even a high mode.
This device does have an easy access battery compartment or can be powered by a 9v power supply adapter.
Sound Quality
:

The setup I am going through varies. Sometimes I just plug strait from guitar to a tube amp. Then sometimes I use a overdrive pedal in between. But I tried this wah-unit with both type of setups; it sounds okay. The extended and the high mode are useful. However, I can't get much use out of the bass mode as of now. I found consistency of this wah when playing clean to super driven is pretty decent. So far I haven't heard of any extra or unwanted noise out of this device. I guess the important thing to adhere to for getting a good sound of the Killer Wail is applied control or coordination of the foot. UNlike Morley's Bad Horsie wah, this unit doesn't use the spring to depress the pedal(rocker) back up. I do like the extended mode. It balances out the extremes when playing high or low notes.

Well, that little foam padding kind of makes me nervous sometimes. I have a feeling over time and age that the foam will someday not be as foamy and will either fall off or flatten with fatigue. Also, I wonder about that switch goes down up and down when the pedal is pressed or depressed.
Would I take this to a gig without a backup? Well, if it was my only wah pedal? Maybe. But since I have the Bad Horsie why take the chance.

I usually play the heavier rock stuff. However, I do play clean once in a while. This pedal is consistent in both categories. I have been playing a while and this isn't my first wah that I used. So it's average to slightly average for the price. Also, I am not a very big fan considering Snarlin' Dogs, Dunlops and VOXs and I don't feel like schelling out big bucks for a Teese, MusicSound Design, George Dennis or Buddah wahs. I wouldn't get a new one if it were lost or stolen, I just get another Bad Horsie. I love the extended setting of the the Killer Wail, the balance is not half bad. But, I expected it to have a higher design of mechanical engineering. My favorite feature of the pedal is it is pretty compact and not to big or bulky. It does do the job and doesn't detract from any playing as far as that is concerned.

This is where I felt rather let down.. This being my first wah, I didt really know what to expect from a wah when I first tried it. 2 months down the road, after trying several other wahs (GCB-95, GCB-535Q) and learning how to work is properly, I realize the Killer wail was a failure compared to those I mentioned. It DOEST NOT wah properly after the 12th fret, especially on the first 3 strings. If you listened carefully, the wah range is INCOMPLETE. It goes something like waak waak, instead of wahh waahh!! Kinda like the tail end of the wah got eaten up by something. Tried it with several amps and guitars and the results were the same.

I will pass judgement fairly accordingly to what I have heard from this wah. It wahs fantastic IF you use it on the CLEAN channel of the amp. Good for clean chord work and strumming. It works reasonably well on the OD channel for anything below the 12th fret. A good wah shouldt have such limitations. So I reckon it sucks. Dont get hoodwinked by the earlier reviews of the Killer wail, I did. You dont have to believe what I say either. Just go try one for your self to find out, be very sure to play some solo or whatever on the 2nd octave and listen for yourself. If you're looking for a good wah of reasonable price, I suggest you look some where else. The GCB-95 is pretty good for its price which is almost half a time cheaper.

Since I got the wah it was microphonic in a horrible way at the high end of the sweep, I e-mailed tech 21 to see if this was acceptable in their minds or had I got a duffer. The response came back quickly that it was usual to expect a certain amount of this and they did not feel there was a problem. I liked the sound of the wah so I persevered.

This is where the problems begin, apart from the microphonics that became more and more irritating I have had a nightmare with this pedal. To begin with I mounted it on my pedal board with velcro attached too the rubber feet, this wasn't substantial enough so, as I do with most pedals, removed the feet to get a more substantial connection. Only thing being that the mode selector switch is underneath the unit. After about 3 months of use the wah started to elicit the most horrendous squeals and crackles at certain points of its travel. Assuming that the pot had gone I returned it to the dealer where they could find no fault, (seems they forgot to test it with their feet!!! Duh!!!) I had to make a 1 1/2 hour journey to show them what the problem was, turns out the switch was pressing up against the inside of the unit, due to the abscence of the feet and had dismantled itself quite comprehensively. We fixed this and put long strips of rubber under the unit to relieve the switch of any pressure that would cause it to repeat. Thought I had nailed the problem it and went back to gigging it. All was well for a while. Within two weeks mid song the pedal just died, very embarrassing, turns out the input jack had just basically disintegrated inside the unit. When I looked the input jack itself was one of those horrible black plastic ones that are so brittle you could probably break it by sneezing near it. I had enough of this pedal at this point. It went straight back to the dealer and I don't want it back. I am reluctantly (as I have had dunlops before and they have broke down) opting for a Dunlop Crybaby from Hell. Hope that thing can stand up to some gigging.

Bought from Sounds Great in Manchester and they have been fine with replacing it, though I haven't had my replacement unit yet. Funnily enough whilst I was in the dealer the first time I met the UK Tech 21 distributor and he was a most gracious fellow who replaced my worn out handle on the Trademark 60 amp FOC whilst I was there. Haven't contacted Tech 21 direct about this as I felt that the responsibility was with the dealer. I would point out that I am a big fan of Tech 21 gear and own loads of it. (Tri OD, XXL, Trademark 60, Double Drive, and not for long Killer Wail) I have never had a problem with any of their products other than this one. I give them a 9 for general service but in this assistance I give them a five as they tried to fob me off a bit with regard to my original query regarding microphonics. Sounds Great in Manchester get a 10 though.

I think that the problem here is that the Killer Wail, though designed by Tech 21 in NYC is in fact built in Brazil. And I don't like to put a black mark against anyone but they have built this pedal so cheaply it is an embarrassment. Why oh why do successful manufacturers jeopardise their reputations by farming the manufacture of certain products out to companies who have access to cheap labour(did I just answer my own question there??. It seems to me that, though the initial design of this wah was solid, that the manufacture and quality control is nothing short of lousy. I will look at Tech 21 again for sure but if it says made in Brazil I will be leaving it well alone. Very dissapointing product. I mean, honestly the thing cost #150 (which is about $220) and is expensive for a wah!!! You would think they would have priced it more competitively or just made it better. I can say nothing more other than avoid this pedal like the plague. I am voting with my feet by returning it. Hey I could have replaced the input/output jacks myself with some switchcraft or similar high quality part but why should I? Manufacturers must learn that cheap is not always best. This was an expensive, pro spec (supposedly) product and I expect it to behave as such. It didn't and now I will think twice before buying Tech 21 gear again. Shame. Dimebag Crybaby from Hell here I come!!!!!!!!

I prefer the extended setting, since I use a wah more as a slow filter sweep than as a wacka-wacka sorta thang. I've got a Morley Volume/Wah, which I use simply for the volume (quietest VP in existence!) but I really dislike the wah sound.
The Killer Wail seems to have a perfectly set volume level. Just enough to let the tone stand out, but not enough to suggest an "actual" level boost. The Morley cannot turn the wah level down low enough, and other wahs and auto-wahs I've owned need a post-boost to get the level up.
The Killer Wail is a keeper.

I'm using it mainly with a clean amp tone and with my electric balalajka. This instrument has the same range as the guitars three highest strings and the Killer Wail is ideally suited for that, since the "high" mode is intended for just that range.
You see, my biggest problem with other wahs is that they are hard for me to control, at least live. It usually takes a lot of precision work and when I'm way up there on my balalajka neck most wahs tend to work more like volume pedals. The Killer Wail's "high" mode solves that problem.
However, the "high" mode is a bit thin. Now I'm being unreasonable cause you can't have fat and trebly at the same time. Now comes the beauty of the three modes.
The "extended" mode is great sounding too. It's very much like a noprmal wah but a bit more subtle, very sophisticated sound. Not retro at all, very modern. But really good and musical.
And the "deep" mode actually works for my balalajka too. It's even more subtle than the "extended" mode and therefore finds a place in tunes where a more subtle wah sound is needed.

This is a good sounding wah pedal. I have a Vox reissue and it is cool, but a little noisy. I did the "True bypass" mod and that helped a ton, but the range isn't as wide but for the funk wah sound it is great. (Only battery power which really sucks!)
But back to the Killer Wail, I love the ability to switch between three modes. (I use the middle setting and it covers exactly what I need)

This pedal is great. I REALLY like the fact that it is not as long as the Vox pedal and as long as most pedals, so it gives you more room for your pedalboard. Has a nice smooth sound and not too "quacky". Just enough for the funkier stuff. I am keeping my Vox, but I will be using the Killer Wail. I give it a 9 because of the "sponge" pedal stop and the fact that if you do want to use an adaptor instead of a battery, the input is recessed, so you have to find an adaptor that is NOT right angled, or if you are using a Furman Pedalboard, you have to find a non right angled plug. But I made my own and it is now no big deal. The sound is everything.
I compared it to other pedals out there and this one had it it to other pedals out there and this one had it all.

Playing through Budda and Mesa amps with a variety of pedals (Reverend, DOD, Fulltone) and guitars (Reverend, PRS, and Fender). Not noisy at all and the effect is very strong. I have been playing giutar since 1972 and have used the cry baby wah with a gibson SG and marshall amps. I have changed my rig about a year ago and found that the cry baby no longer works. WHY ?? I am now using the following setup. PRS ---> Killer Wail ----> Hughes and Kettner Triamp ----> IN THE TRIAMP EFFECT LOOP ARE A (DBX 31 band EQ -----> TC Electronics M1. With the new setup the cry baby was extremely noisey and would squeal and was unusable. A friend of mine presented the Killer Wail this past weekend to me and I used it that night on stage. I loved it and so did the sound enginneers. The wah effect is powerful and musical and does not SQUEAL. I use it on the deep setting and it works great for all 3 of my settings, clean, semi distorted, and lead. The band had smiles on their faces when I used it - no shit !

Basic wah pedal but with the aforementioned mode switch. Manual is fine - no need really. Mode switch is on the bottom, which means you have to pick it up to switch modes, but I set it on the middle position and leave it there; the sweep in this position is perfect for guitar. I love that the cables connect in front, not on the sides. I give it a 9 for putting switch on the bottom, though. Also, it doesn't have a light to let you know it's switched on, but you ought to be able to tell from the sound. The switch itself works flawlessly. My other beefs are that the battery connector and battery door are cheapo's (spend the extra dime, OK?), and the bottom panel is the same cheap tin material all wah wah designers seem to like to use. The chassis and pedal are bullet proof, though.

I play my Gibson Flying V or my mexi Strat into the wah, into a Marshall VS65R, with either a DOD FX96 analog delay or a Boss DD-3 digital delay on the loop (also sometimes use my DOD FX64 and FX22). I have always loved the sound of a wah, both with the pedal in motion and just as a filter, but I hate wah pedals. I've had 3 dunlop crybabies, one dunlop mister crybaby, and two different morleys. They all suck. The dunlops are microphonic, the sweep is uneven, the switches can't suck enough, and the pots go bad overnight. The morleys have the same problems, have too short a sweep, and don't actually sound like a classic wah (have they ever listened to a rock record?? And, FUCK Steve Vai already.) Both dunlops and morleys squeel like pigs most of the time. I thought I had given up on wah wahs. Anyway, I saw Michael Schenker playing a Killer Wail in December (I was in front row), and he has always played cray babies. He plays ancient amps, guitars and effects, so I figured if he had a brand new wah, it was worth a shot. I bought it and love it. It is quiet, has a PERFECTLY even sweep, and doesn't squeel. Every wah I've ever had before has made me sound like crap, and now it's like I have the magic touch. I AM A WAH WAH GOD!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Seems fine so far. My three year old son rode over it with his tricycle in the basement, and didn't leave a mark. A '9' until further notice; my daughter hasn't found it yet...

Bought it new from a dealer, www.pedalgeek.com (the shipping was free, and they gave me some "pedalgeek brand" guitar strings, which you can have if you want them...)

Its a wah pedal but with a twist. 3 mode selector under the pedal which gives you deep, extended and high modes. Why this switch is on the base I have no idea bad design for the unit is destined to be velcroed to my pedal board!! Battery access is on the base too, easy access clip affair no screws!! Easy to use as any other wah, though if desired you can adjust the stiffness of the pedal by tightening the very substantial bolt that holds it onto the pedal. Cool as cool chrome finish.

Reverend Rocco> Killer Wail>Bixonic EXP 2001>Voodoo labs Tremelo> MXR Phase 90>Dod echo>Boss CE2 Chorus> Tech 21 Trademark 60 amp. Can't get the pedal to work on DC mains which is a pain, well it works but get a very noisy hum so back to batteries, I have e mailed Tech 21 but haven't received a reply as yet. Pedal seems microphonic slightly but all wahs have elements of that. You don't notice when you're playing only if the wah is turned on/off when no signal is going through it.
Wah sound itself is great, each mode overlaps on itself to give some real scope from deep filthy wah to wailing high. Lovely on clean sounds. No noise from the pedal as an effect ie hiss etc..
Chose over Roger Mayer vision wah, too many options, and Buddha which just wasn't there for me.

Too early to say, wahs are notorious for breaking down but I have had Tech 21 gear in the past and it has never let me down yet. Gigging without back up. The wah is extremely sturdy looking whilst still being smaller than most, only 8 inch long. Doesn't take up half your board like dunlop's. I give it a 9 but its all down to that potentiometer......

Only once dealt with them and they seem to be very good though I am still awaiting my reply on this unit. I would give them a 10 from past experience.

Blues/Rock mostly covers with a bit of studio work. Playing 15 years plus, have owned all sorts of everything in the past. Pedal junkie. Would replace if stolen but have never had any gear stolen in all the time I have been playing. Been too lucky..... Tech 21 have produced some really inspirational stuff in the past and I am sure this will be no different.
Love the sound look etc, DC mains operation is a mystery but maybe not for long, why that mode switch is tucked away underneath I have no idea but then again some require unscrewing back plate so not as bad as it could be.
Chose over (as above) bought due to sound and previous experience with Tech 21 products. Plus its cool looking and not overdone in the option dept.
Thats everything but may I just say that I think a common problem that people have with effects is using poor quality leads and interconnects with their gear. Learn how to use a soldering iron (or bribe someone like me to use one for you) and make your own leads. I started using high quality cable ie Hills OFC noisless professional which is expensive but not ridiculous and Neutrik jacks which are costly but bomb proof and have never had a lead die on me since. Also you can minimise the length of unrequired lead that you use which is always a good thing.
