3 knobs, [nice chicken head knobs that are easy to twirl], couldn't be easier
No manual, but Ron at Uncle Spot always answers emails or phone calls promptly if you have any questions
The only quibble I have is the footswitch jack being on the chassis, would have been easier to have it on top with the other jacks, but that's petty [nothing is perfect, but this comes close!]

Sound Quality : 10
You can definitely get the Dick Dale surf guitar sound with Uncle Spot, if that's what you want
I use it with a Marshall JCM 800 50 watt combo unit
Despite warnings that reverb with distortion equals mud, I find that the Uncle Spot does NOT muddy my sound, but in fact gives it a new dimension
Mind you, I use no distortion pedals and just use the natural distortion of the amp, but combined with my Analogman Beano Boost I get a clear distinctive sound with the Marshall and Uncle Spot, even with "wet" reverb!
The unit is not noisy at all
Lush wet reverb, and with the mix button you can dial it in so you just get a tad of it if you don't want to go overboard

Reliability : 10
Ron picks superior components and this is a hand made, well designed unit
For not much more than a Made in China mass produced Fender reissue, you can have a quality reverb that will last forever and hold its value
I use it at gigs without a backup, no worries at all

Customer Support : 10
How many companies can you call or email the owner directly, and get a prompt response?
Uncle Spot stands behind his product
Excellent support!

Overall Rating : 10
I play punk rock [the classic style, think Clash and Stiff Little Fingers], so I am an unlikely candidate for this type of product
That's the rub- it sets me apart from everyone else
If you want to sound unique, it helps to use unique products
The Uncle Spot is unique
I've been playing longer than a lot of the readers here have been alive
I own a ton of gear, but my basic setup now is the Analog Beano Boost, the Uncle Spot Reverb, and a Marshall JCM 800 50 watt combo amp, and the Eric Clapton strat from Fender
I love the quality of this reverb, its top notch construction and design, and the lush sound it produces
The only quibble, as I said, is that I wish the footswitch jack was in a more accessible place
I compared it with the Fender reissue [try to avoid anything made in China], other boutique reverbs [either too expensive or the owners weren't very responsive to my questions], and vintage Fender units on ebay [over-priced, and who knows what you are getting there?]
It gives a new dimension to my music
Before you shell out the money for a tube reverb unit, consider this: you get what you pay for.
I'm glad I paid a little bit more for a hand-crafted, quality reverb, that will probably outlast me!

3 knobs and a power switch, just like my Clark Beaufort. You can't get any easier than that! I ordered it in tweed to match my amp, a $50.00 dollar upgrade.

Sound Quality : 10
Very useable throughout the full range of the unit. Very quiet in the signal chain. I am running this unit into a Fender deluxe clone by Clark amplification and use a pair of gibson 135s. One with P-90 and the other with Classic 57's

Reliability : No Opinion
I have only had the unit for a while but it looks like it will last a lifetime and then some.

Customer Support : 10
Very easy to contact and deal with. I would recommend Uncle Spot to anyone as he is top notch.

Overall Rating : 9
I play blues and jazz and have been playing for about 12 years. I purchased the unit after ordering a Clark as at that time Mr. Clark was not offering the addition of a reverb to his amps. I would order another if it was ever lost or stolen. The only improvements I could think or wish for is a more consistent stain on the tweed as it is a little darker around the seems that the rest of the unit and a little more classic/retro name plate that takes up a little less of the units face. These are only minor issues and in no way do I regret the purchase of the reverb tank as it sounds wonderful!

As is customary on this type of outboard reverb unit, there are three controls: Dwell, Mix and Tone. If you haven't used a 3-knob spring reverb unit before, it takes a few minutes to get a feel for how the 3 knobs interact. Once you get used to it, you'll never want to go back to one or two knob reverb! The ability to change the tonal color of the wet signal as well as the length of the reverb decay really opens up up the tonal possibilities.

Sound Quality : 10
Excellent! This is the best sounding spring reverb I have ever heard, and is almost transparent in the signal chain - very little noise, and almost no tonal coloration.

I bought this unit as part of a major change in rig. After several years using rack-based effects controlled with midi, I was not happy with the way the A/D D/A conversion was effecting my tone. It was very subtle, but I was clearly losing something in the analog to digital, back to analog process. So I dumped my rack set up and replaced my effects (the ones I really use) with all analog. I bought a new, back-to-basics amp ('59 Bassman clone), and therefore needed external reverb. I considered other options, but after reading reviews on Dr. Spot's amps and the reverb unit, decided to order one. I am very happy that I did.

Reliability : No Opinion
Too new to know. Based on build quality and components, I expect to be able to hand this down to my son. Obviously tubes do die occasionally, so I stock spares of each type.

I had several phone conversations with Uncle Spot prior to my purchase, he was incredibly patient and responsive. He was also quick in responding to emails.

Overall Rating : 10
Great! Of course, it is what it is - an old-style analog outboard spring reverb unit, so it doesn't have alot of bells and whistles. But for what it is, I believe it is a great sounding unit at a reasonable price - especially reasonable for a hand-built unit.

Ease of Use : 10
FEATURES: This is a tweaked design of the vintage Fender
6G15 Tube Reverb Unit that was produced in 1963. It is hand built,
one at a time, by Uncle Spot himself. This is an excellent example
of taking a nearly perfect vintage design and making it perfect--it
just doesn't get any better than this.

Features include: hand point to point wiring, JJ preamp/driver tubes
with a cherry picked 6K6GT, and your choice of covering (my is blonde
tolex with wheat grill), Dwell, Tone and Mix controls on a chrome
upright panel (like the original). From Uncle Spot's website: "Sprague
Blue Atoms for power supply filter electrolytic caps, and Mallory 150
for coupling and tone caps, and carbon film resistors for optimum tonal
characteristics.

The component boards are made from gerolite-XX material for their durability
and dielectric properties. They are mounted on 3/8" standoffs for better
wire ?dressing?/routing.

The chassis is 16 gauge steel, triple plated chrome. The cabinet is an
aged pine.

The cabinet feet are a larger variety so the unit can stand on any surface,
and provide addition shock absorption. The handle is one of the best on the
market and has bolts through the cabinet into T-nuts for durability and
strength. The power cord is a grounded, 3-prong, 18 gauge, 12 feet in length."

What Spot doesn't mention and maybe this is part of the secret sauce,
is that he is using a 3 spring reverb tank not the usual two spring tank.

Sound Quality : 10
Sound Quality (rating 10): If you are thinking about digital delay
lines or fancy studio stuff this is not for you. This is only for the
guy who craves that lush spring reverb sound of the Surf era that can
be mixed from a little ripple to a splashy hang 10 wave without sounding
like Dick Dale in the Grand Canyon.

If you are familiar with vintage Fender Black Face amps like the Twin
Reverb or the Super Reverb, or even the Vibrolux Reverb, you know that
when you adjust the one and only reverb pot above 3 your reverb sounds
like your talking under water through your mother's old vacuum cleaner
hose--the range is 1 to 3 at best. With Uncle Spot's unit, the range is
all useable, both dwell and mix will allow acceptable and pleasing coloration
that is clear sailing without going overboard.

I am mainly a blues player and I find this unit to be so much better than
the built in unit that came with either my original Black Face Deluxe Reverb
or Black Face Super Reverb--I often prefer using it in lieu of the inboard
reverb. I don't normally use a lot of reverb with the blues but what I use
has to be clean, pure and allow the instrument to breath without suffocating
the signal in a dank cave. This reverb unit does it for me without buzz, hum or
hiss--extremely quiet for a tube device. Furthermore, if you want a great tube
practice amp, use this Reverb Unit as a preamp to any headphone driver and you
have an incredible tube amp coming through your headset.

Reliability : 10
Reliability (rating 10): I have had this unit for a year, and it may be one of the
first 5 Uncle Spot made. So far not one thing has gone wrong. I've looked inside
too, and as far as I can tell the build quality gives new meaning to the words
"built like a brick..."

Customer Support : 10
Customer Support: (rating 10): Uncle Spot offers a one year warranty on parts
and labor. But that doesn't tell you the whole story. I've known Spot for a
number of years now, he has never, ever, steered me wrong when it comes to
tone and always he is there to answer your questions and help you with good
honest straight up help.

Overall Rating : 10
Overall Rating: This is a TEN on all counts, but when you compare the price
with other models, I think you will agree that it's really an ELEVEN. The Fender
Re-issue version currently has a MSRP of $569.99 while you might see it for
$450 on sale, it's no where near the quality of Uncle Spot's. The current
Fender re-issue uses a PC board, no 6K6 but 6V6, and is not hand made. Uncle
Spot's MSRP is $499.00 and it comes with a cover at no extra charge. Go to
www.unclespot.com for more details.
