This is a very easy pedal to dial in a great sound. The toggle switch up is cleaner and more open sounding. Add more full blown tube grit with the toggle switch down. Tone, Level, and Distortion controls are very responsive and provide a wide range of options.

Sound Quality : 10

I've tried this pedal with a Fender Evil Twin and Johnson Millennium 250. I threw away my modded Tube Screamer, not by Bill, and gave the Boss DS-1 a permanent position in my pedal board. With the Twin, I play with the toggle up. However, with the johnson, my big rock amp,
I use it to drive my Satriani and Van Halen tones just to the
right spot. Incredibly huge, warm, and tonally responsive.

Reliability : 10

Seems great! Haven't owned it long but never any problems @ the gigs.
My band plays 3 weeks of 4 and long sets!

Customer Support : 10
Bill's very approachable and interested in discussing sound!
He wants his customers to sound great so I'd recommend contacting about your how to get the sound your after.

Overall Rating : 10
I'm currently in a rock / new country band playing an American Fender
Telecaster. I use this pedal to boost my Twin and get a slightly edgey break-up for New Country and Rock & roll riffs. When playing 80's metal, I switch the toggle down and use a Yamaha Pacifica 921
with an Evolution pickup in bridge position. The pedal adds a nice full tube drive for leads. I use a Johnson Millenium 250 with a 4X12 cab for this sound . . . which is amazing. The Johnson provides a great early Van Halen sound and pretty well matches Satriani. The DS-1 is used more to get a slightly more overdriven sound that beautifully adds to the Johnson big sound that's 95% there. This pedal doesn't change your good source sound, but adds a beautiful flavour to it.

This is the twin toggle version of the DS-1 mod from Bill, which is very easy to figure out and use. Bill even sent the basic set up via email, but I had fun going through all the tonal variations without it. The toggles are placed in an up/down direction, and right where they are easiest to access, beneath the tone and distortion controls respectively. The only adjustment that I would make with this pedal is that the sweep on the distortion control is more even all the way around. It would be better to start the gain at where it is in the middle, and then go gradually up from there. I tend to use it with the distortion full tilt, but it would be nice to back down more slowly than it is set up right now.

Sound Quality : 10
This is where Bill's mod of the DS-1 burns all other mods to the ground. The sound qualities of this mod are exactly where Boss should have had them right from the beginning when this pedal was first introduced in the Late Seventies. It truly captures the resonance of that Era, which was the Decade of Distortion. Unlike the other mods out there that are concerned only with the amount of gain, Bill's mod also excels in the areas of tone and warmth. The tonal variation with the twin toggles gives you access from blues soaked to treble brilliant distortions. However, the key word here for sound is warmth. It truly captures all the old school vintage distortions that most of us salivate over. Like all of Bill's mods, this pedal will compliment and breath new life into any guitar or amp that you may be using. In this way, Bill's mods are pure magic.

Reliability : 10
We all know already the durability of a Boss pedal. I will add here that this is the only distortion pedal that I use anymore, especially for live gigs and in the studio. I can't even imagine anymore what my set up would be like without this pedal. Incredibly dependable and reliable.

Customer Support : 10
I've spoken with Bill on several occasions, and he has always been most helpful in getting exactly what I want out of the pedals that I use. Bill knows the complete Universe when it comes to pedal modification, and the results is obvious.

Overall Rating : 10
This is the Ultimate distortion pedal. I have not looked at another one since I got it. I have complemented this pedal with Bill's Boss SD-1 and MT-2 mods in the set up that I use. With this power trio, all variations of overdrive and distortion are covered, from subtle transparent overdrive to full tilt amp melting distortion.

The sound of this is 100 times better than the orignal and now it is usable.I hated the orignal so I thought I would try whizzers out and now I use it all the time.It has one toggle and is easy to use.

Sound Quality : 10
The sound is thick and has no fuzz to it.it has a creamy sound. The toggle also has a sound change.I use a fender strat.and a marshall jcm 800 amp.this amp needed this pedal.

Reliability : 10
I like the work that whizzer did so i think the pedal will last without a breakdown.i use this pedal on me board with a compressor and a whizzer bd-2 single toggle and ui have all the sound that I need.I heard that the bd-2 and this ds-1 go good together. So i tryed it and i like it.

Customer Support : 9
Whizzer gives you his phone # on a card that comes with the pedal.I would think his support is good.

Overall Rating : 10
I play 60's and 70's music and been playing for 15 years. If I lost this pedal I would buy another.I love this pedal. The feature i like is the way all the controls work.

this pedal in its original format super easy to use 3 knobs a no brainer

Sound Quality : 1
this pedal sounds better before the mod ,the mod is crab this guy knows nothing about moding pedals the sound is soo muddy ,the pedal is way too noisy and a bunch of switches added to the pedal that dont do nothing . i play all kind of strats ,mostly americans or japanese . my amp of choice is trynor 40 watt tube amp . i have went thru almost every overdrive distortion pedal that ever existed . so i recommend you stick to an original SD-1 made in japan .or even better a tech 21 double drive . this is one amaaaazing pedal trust me on this one and by the way buy the one that is black in paint .the first issues were in blue navy color which are very noisy .the black version is super nice thick and warm overdrive .

Reliability : 9
in its original format this is a boss pedal will last you a life time .

Customer Support : 1

Overall Rating : 1

Three knobs and toggle...not to hard to figure out.

Sound Quality : 9
This pedal is amazing, especially considering a stock DS-1 isn't even usable. The fat toggle is awesome. It adds the fullest body imaginable without making your sound muddy. This pedal sounds great by itself, but if you use a little overdrive on your amp and then slam the front end of the amp with this pedal it is a thing of beauty. This is a good pedal if you are looking for a great heavily overdriven sound, like an old JCM 800 turned to 11. But if you are looking for the high gain sizzle of a Dual Recto look somewhere else. The only reason I give this category a 9 is because the pedal if just a bit fuzzy and I mean a VERY LITTLE bit.

Reliability : 10
It is a Boss pedal modded by one of the best modders in the world, unless the battery dies I shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Customer Support : 10
Bill is the greatest. He will help you find your sound. I would recommend him to anyone. I will definatly do business with him again.

Overall Rating : 10
This is a great pedal as I said before. I would buy another without a doubt. I plan on getting another one of Bill's pedals soon. Maybe a Blues Driver this time. Bill's prices are by far cheaper then analogman or keeley and Bill's are by farrrrrrrr better!

i have submitted reviews on what set-up i use for Whizzermods on the CE3,YJM308 so just look there noise is not a factor on clean all the way up to max overdrive. this pedal is outstanding next to Keeley and Analog man this blow's them away and those aren't bad either, but whizzer just sounds the best !!! as far a artists ( SACH, VAI, MALSTEEN,ROTH,RHOARDS,VAN HALEN,MOZART,ECT,ECT,....) it works great with every effect i run through it....
