There are 4 knobs, level, distortion, balance, tone. The first two are obvious. The key to getting a good sound is the way the tone and balance interact with each other. You can go from clean and tinny to fuzzy and wooly and all stops in between. but it does take some tweaking.

Well I'm using it with a Strat and a silverface Twin reverb. You can get some really bad (in a bad way) sounds out of this pedal, but with the right tweaking you can get some really good ones, including a nice tubey overdrive.

These old yammies are build like tanks. Never gone wrong in 20 years, can you say that about boutique pedals???

Excellent bargain pedal. The distortion pedals yamaha put out in the 80's are not as good as the modulation pedals from the same era, like the stereo Chorus or Flanger, but they still do a job. This is a tricky but versatile beast for little moolah.
