Very easy to get the hang of, can be a bit annoying having to scroll through so many options to get to the setting you want (or to turn an effect off). The manual was pretty good, preset sounds are fun but not really useful (which kind of sums up this unit).

Sound Quality : 6
The effects are very varied and a bit extreme in cases. Owning this pedal is really only useful for learning what effects are available and which ones you want to use. To be honest I have decided that effects and Bass guitars will only ever have a limited relationship, this pedal goes with me everywhere - as a tuner. I have taken to using the effects with mics and guitars where most of the settings are ignored. The ones I dabble with are Reverb - not enough sensitivity with the settings (a bit of a kareoke effect to be honest), Distortion - just too harsh for my tastes, Wah - kind of fun, Chorus - a bit artificial and robot-y. Yes, I know I'm not using it in the way it was designed, but I never found a good setting for that purpose either.

Reliability : 6
It was broken when I got it, the in (or out - I forget) put jack was broken - the solder joint had cracked internally. It was fairly easy to fix, and had been owned by a bit of a gorilla. One of the buttons did stick down at one point, I can't remember how I fixed it but it wasn't hard. It always seems to do the business as a tuner though...

Customer Support : No Opinion
I was able to get the full manual from the website easily - other than that, no experience.

Overall Rating : 5
It seems to muddy up the sound of whatever you run through it, to me the bass just sounds better without even bothering with this pedal. It has given me a good education in what people mean when they say 'hall reverb' or 'room reverb', or learning what wah or chorus sounds like. I have no regrets in buying it and it is better than having no pedal, but it is never used for it's intended purpose any more. Having said that, it is great as a headphone amp - the effects are often in stereo so it can sound OK through headphones (better than acoustic only and more portable than a combo amp and a set of 'phones). Good effects (and multi effects) can sound GREAT, try as I might I can not get a sound I love through this unit. Oh, I never have battery life problems either - I guess just using it for a couple of minutes a week as a tuner doesn't suck the batteries dry...

Pretty simple for a programmable multi effects unit, but to the point where it's kinda limited. The presets had to go- none of them were very usable. The manual was ok I guess, but I didn't need it as I also have the 505II(guitar version). Editing is easy- too easy. Not enough parameters, you just cycle through like one number for each effect! Firmware unknown, and I can't think of any practical way to upgrade it.

Sound Quality : 5
I use a cheap Chinese Hofner knockoff(no name)that's my favorite bass ever believe it or not- much fatter sound, better sustain somehow, far superior feel and lighter weight than my old p-bass, and all those other supposedly high quality basses I've had in the past!(Rick, Gibson RD Artist, etc), anyway, > Ibanez bass compressor > Modded Boss ds-1(or big muff depending on my mood) > Zoom 506II(for now) > Hog's Foot clone that I had to build myself because no one makes them > Ampeg v4b(late 70's) > Ampeg svt 1520h cab(same size as the 8 10, but with 4 10's, 1 15, and a horn). Yeah, I know my amp's too damn big, but it sure sounds good.
About the zoom- cool tuner, HORRIBLE envelope filter(in the 506 anyway), ok chorus, useless distortions, useless flanger, good Phaser, useless eq, useless amp sim, good noise gate, wimpy compressor, useless reverb(good actually, but WHO THE HELL WANTS REVERB ON BASS!), good delay(never use it, but it's there anyway), cheezey "synth" sounds, poor tracking on the octave stuff, and no noise at all. You CANNOT switch between effects during a song- it drops out for like a half second. Overall it can be useful. But not everything is usable.

Reliability : 5
Eats batteries like potato chips(28 hours MY ASS!) Pretty sturdy in its own way, but once the "store" button got stuck while I was tweaking a patch AND IT RESET ITSELF TO ALL FACTORY PRESETS!!! ARRRGHHHH!!!!! Yes, I use it without a backup. If anything goes wacky(occasionally) I just yank it outta the chain and do without it. Better step lightly- the plastic's kinda thin. I wouldn't stomp too hard, but I assure you from experience it CAN withstand being drop-kicked! So can a ping-pong ball.

I've been playin' for about 25 years, mostly rock. I have way too much other gear to mention(hell, I COLLECT pedals). I like the tuner in this thing mostly, but it's useful for a few appropriate effects if the song calls for it. I bought the 505II first, and was SO impressed with the envelope filter(AUTO WAH) and distortions that I had to go out and buy the bass version. WHAT A DISSAPOINTMENT! It turns out that the 505 is perfectly ok for bass anyway- it don't kill your bottom like most guitar effects. Right now I have the 505 programmed for use with my theremin(no I don't use it live!), but the 506 would be just fine for that! The only reason I haven't switched between them is that I just don't feel like re-programming them both. However if either one ever resets itself again I won't hesitate to make the switch. My advice would be to just get the 505II instead of the 506II because the 505 has EXCELLENT envelope followers and great distortions, and the only thing the 506 does that the 505 won't do is the silly "synth" sounds! Well, also the defret, but that's just a bass booster similar to a Hog's Foot!
But eventually I plan on phasing out any and all multi-effect crap anyway. Face it, REAL pedals just sound better. That ain't just my opinion, it's a rock hard ice cold fact! But, I'll have to replace it with like 6 more pedals to do everything I do with this little plastic cheezebox... and I haul too much crap around as it is. (Hehe- also my guitar player thinks pedals are for guitar only for some reason. Jealous I guess. But how many effects do you really NEED for bass? I can get by without ANY if I have to.)
If it got stolen I'd just use the 505 and get it over with... or use my small clone, small stone, eq pedal, stage tuner, auto filter, reboxed Walco gate(they called it a "feedback reducer" for some reason, but it's a good noise gate), and homemade CMOS boost. Sigh. I'd need a giant pedalboard.... so I guess it helps out, and it's acceptable the way I use it.

Ok..I'm not exactly a great enthusiast of bass effects or anything just that I needed a bit more tonal versatility. Anyways this pedal has an extremely easy to use interface. but read the manual first or its easy to get confused about what does what when and where.

Sound Quality : 7
I'm running this through a Stranger Cube 80M bass combo, an Indian made amp which was none the less better than several other amps I'd thought of buying (some marshall amps included) and a Java Quake 4-string.
The system seems extremely sensitive to electrical interference. I moved my setup closer to my computer and had to use the spike buster to power the pedal. I'll tell you the noise was unbearable. But when I used it away from the comp it sounded great. The ZNR does a good job of cutting any unnecessary sounds.
Some of the effects, thrash distortion for instance, sounds a little watery and can be a real pain in the wrong places if you're trying to imitate Cliff Burton or any other heavy metal bass sound.
Overall, the pedal is best suited for fuzzy tones and slap styles or clean tones with bits of overdrive. Also the defretter works very well.

Reliability : No Opinion
Given the choice if I could get a BOSS effects proccessor I'd buy that instead. But the unit is rugged and probably will be able to take some punishment (Though I'd refrain from jumping on it or the likes).
I used it at several gigs and no complaints so far..

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealt with the company.

Overall Rating : 6
I usually play anything from slow rock to heavy metal to funk and gospel. As I said before I don't use it for much apart from the noise reducer and the fuzz and clean tones. On the whole I'm not a great fan.

Without having read the manual I spent 15 minutes to figure out how this thing works. Dial knob is a very good thing in easening patch editing!
Later I downloaded the manual and found some cool things like indirect patch change (although I don't use it), and it had some of the settings explained (e.g. EQ).
This box is very easy.

Sound Quality : 7
I use Yamaha BB-N4III bass with this box, and plug into a 2x12" combo (or sometimes into a PA).
Generally, i like the sounds that this thing produces, but there are some points:
- Absolutely uncontrollable and hard-to-understand EQ, I can't create an EQ curve that I want to. The EQ changes too much when I change the value.
- Amp Sim makes my sound smeared and dull, there's no "finger tone". I keep this off.

I use "Fat" as DIST because the EQ is very limited and I can't do it with an EQ only. ZNR works fine for me, even though my bass does not produce hum. I use the compressor (at the lowest level of compression), but I'm gonna buy a dedicated stompbox for this (I'm thinking of Digitech Bass Squeeze).

I don't like that "digital" hiss that is produced on certain combinations of effects. And 32000 Hz/16 bit is too bad :(

Reliability : 4
I gig without a backup because I don't have a backup %)
I changed the switches under the stomp buttons countless times, had to re-solder i/o jacks and a power jack. I can solder, so that's not really a problem, but it annoys when you press a button and it doesn't work! :(

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealt with them.

Overall Rating : 7
I play alt.rock, and it fits. But I wish it had more good tones...
I play for 5 years, used to play w/o any FX-box, but when my guitarist just gave me this Zoom, I began to use it.
I like the tuner and the chorus/flanger/phaser (helps creating "cosmic" sounds). I like the fretless simulator VERY much.
I wish this pedal had only this - tuner, compressor, 8-band graphic EQ, adjustable chorus/flanger/phaser and ZNR.
If it was stolen, I'd buy a dedicated compressor and an EQ, that's all. Maybe I'm gonna sell this piece of plastic soon.

This pedal is pretty user-friendly, but does require reading the manual, so you know what certain specific parameters have to offer (eq presets-50 of them!, high-bandpass, low-bandpass, etc.). Still, the maunal is pretty straightforward, and to-the-point. Editing patches couldn't be easier, compared to the first 506, which I had, too. The rotarty knob, bank and store buttons are simple. All you have to do, to make a patch is turn the rotary off of "Play", and you're in edit mode, then select your sounds, press "Store" once, then again, and that's it-pretty damned easy.

Sound Quality : 8
I used to have mammoth setups, but I'm sick of carrying cabinets, and eight bazillion pedals with me to gigs. Now, all I have, are my two basses, a fretted and fretless Ibanez SR506 bass, a Monster cable into the Zoom pedal, another MOnster into a combo (preferably with a built-in DI), and the DI to the house mixer-talk about downsizing, huh? I've used the 506's predecessor live before, with no problems, and if there is noise, the ZNR (Zoom NOise Reduction) usually rememdies hiss. I'm not big on disortion, or synth, so I don't tinker with those effects, really, although you can get good sounds from them-it just takes time to dial in the right combinations. Everything usually sounds great, but it just takes time to get levels (volume, blends, etc.) balanced. I usually use an SWR Workingman's 15 live, or something similar (I currently rent). I really don't try to emulate a pro's sound, since I like what sounds good to ME. But, I don't see why a pro couldn't use this little guy-sounds good. I'm using many more of the effects on this thing than I ever thought I would. I've been able to get a beautiful chorus (just as good as my old Boss pedal, believe it or not), as well as a MONSTER modeled amp sound, very similar to the SVT setting on a SansAmp Bass DI, which I've also owned. This amp sound that I made, sounds just as badass as Ryan Martinie's sound, but with more punch, if you can imagine that (more mids). My bass sounded great before, and it seems like it's on steroids now. Plus, it seems to have put a lot of new life into my dead strings. I like it! I also will make some patches with phasers and flangers, so I might get some good usage out of this pedal. I'm rating this category with an 8, since I've only had it for a few days, but am pleasantly surprised with the sound quality.

Reliability : No Opinion
I'm sure this thing would be dependable. It's not as tough as Boss pedals, with the metal casing and all, but unless you're a careless dumbass, and/or beat the piss out of your gear, then it should be fine. I've used the regular 506, like I menionted earlier, live before, and I didn't have problems, or need a backup. I'm expecting this to be the same.

I play anything from thrash, speed metal, to light jazz, and everything in between. This pedal is a helpful addition to my simple setup. I've been playing for 10 1/2 years, and my gear was mentioned in the above descriptions. I'd probably buy another one of these, but only close to the price I paid. I got a good deal on this new, as I wouldn't want to pay much more for effects, since I've found good stuff for the $37.11 (ending Ebay bid). I said previously, what sounds I love so far, or what I've made, and the user-frendliness is nice. I really don't hate anything on this pedal, except maybe for the plastic casing. I've already got a few favorite features on here, some being the bandpass, eq, amp sounds, and of course the smooth chorus sounds (even clear down on the low B string. I just bought this, because I was looking for an "all-in-one" package to cover some effects that I like, a nice big-rig sound without the size, the handy tuner, and having a slew of other effects, if I feel like using more. Hey, for 40 bucks-not bad, I'd say. All it takes for a lot of people, are some interesting effects, or new/good tones to get them playing again, or better. This has done just that for me. I'm not getting paid to say any of this, either-I just like this pedal, as it's a really nice bang for the buck. I'm probably one of the few who thinks this way, but you CAN get great sounds out of a pedal like this. People automatically think, that if you buy a cheap whatever, it's going to sound that way. This is mostly untrue. All it takes, again, is just being patient, and seeing what these things can do, and learning how to use them properly (levels, combinations, eq's, etc.). I recommend not listening to what others say, try to get lucky a bit on Ebay like I did, fork over 40 bucks, and see what YOU think. That's what I did, and I'm more than happy-money definitely isn't the end-all-be-all.

Just read through the instruction manual, everything is there and once you get the idea you will be able to programm your patches, set your eq and get closer to the sound you are looking for. Read the manual, it's short and to the point. The unit is small and there are not too many buttons to confuse a user.

The tuner is awesome. Its very easy to read and it comes in very handy on stage and at practice. Just hit the two pedals simultaneously and hold for a few seconds and you will be in the tuner mode. Your sound will be muted and you can tune without anybody hearing you.

Sound Quality : 5
Currently I have a Spector Euro 5 going into the Zoom pedal, which then goes into my Yorkville 2x10 200W combo.

The unit does get pretty noisy, there is significant hissing. The noise gate (ZNR) does a good job of silencing any hissing or other noises when you are not playing.

I think the sound quality of these effects suck for the most part - they get lost in the mix and even when you raise the volume on them, its hard to hear them clearly...only a select few effects are good. The chorus is decent, and the fretless effect sounds cool...even though it does not re-create the fretless sound very well it still has a unique sound. There are a total of 4 effects on here that I am satisfied with.

I primarily use this unit for the preamp, it adds lots of power to my current amp! I was looking for a warm, deep and punchy sound and I managed to obtain it after some tinkering with the effects.

Reliability : 9
It has not failed me yet...although its made of plastic its very tough and durable..also, its made in Japan.

I baught this thing off ebay for a whopping 36 bucks American which was half the price of what it goes for at the music store in my city. It's a good unit for a beginner. For somebody who wants to use lots of effects with their sound live and in the studio, look elsewhere. I am not entirely impressed with it, but for 36 bucks I do not see this as a big loss.

Since I primarily use it for its tuner, the pre amp and the odd chorus here and there I do not necessarily need it for my sound...I am thinking about selling it and getting a seperate pre amp, and a seperate tuner. If you can find one on ebay near the price that I paid for it, try it out. Do not go to your local music store and pay 69.95 for it..its not worth it.

Simple. I got it on a trade with no manual and it took me 10 minutes to figure out how to create patches. It'll take some time to find a decent usable sound without too much noise. It takes time, but its not impossible.

Sound Quality : 7
I own a fretless Fender American P-Bass, Fender American 60's Jazz Bass and a Warwick Streamer Stage II which I play through an Orange AD200>Orange Cabinet. Now thats some high quality equipment right there. I always love to see the look on my friends faces when they see my very expensive rig and then look down to see this little plastic, AA powered POS sitting between my bass and my amp. I only own it because I traded a guitar i bought off a friend for a Roland GP-8 FX processor at a Buy/Sell guitar shop and the guy threw this thing in to balance out the difference. I cant refuse free equipment so i took it.
All in all the sound is much better than i expected from this little hunk of plastic. With some tweaking you can get some good tones but at some point you will hit a wall with it and it'll do all it can do. The distortions are bad, the phaser is OK, the delay is very limited, the Modulation FX are decent, the chorus is good. I cant see anyone duplicating an artists tone on this thing, unless that artist happened to have played through one of them, which ofcourse is highly unlikely. BUT for the retail price its decent, it gets the job done and does produce some ok sounding effects. Definately not as bad as some people make it out to be on here. Its somewhere between a 6 and a 7. So ill just give it 7

Reliability : 10

Ive been playing 8 years and have a variety of music styles, the biggest of which is jazz. i listen too victor wooten, stu hamm, patituci, roscoe beck, marcus miller, dream theater/Liquid tension experiment, steve vai, satriani, eric johnson etc.AND I WORSHIP Jaco. Ofcourse this procescor cant be compared the this type of music. Its way to elementary to be playing lead or solo bass. It is however great for a beginner who is just looking for something to mess around with, or for someone who isnt too serious about bass. Its DEFINATELY not as bad as some of the other reveiwers make it out to be.
Like I said I got this as a free "throw in" accesory on a trade for a guitar effects processor. And considering I paid no money for it I'm happy. I mainly just set it to one patch I like and let it sit there as a preamp and it does just fine. I dont really notice it or worry about it too much, its nothing compared to the other equipment I own or the music. I got it free and it doesnt mess up my sound so whatever,

Not too hard to use...you have to know a bit about effects though. Other than that, it's simple. You navigate through the menus with a knob and chose things with a dial. Making your own patches is simple too. Just go through the menus and set them to what you want. (Distortion type, effect, etc). Read the manual and you'll understand everything.

Sound Quality : 7
I use a mexican P Bass and either a Squier BP 15 or Behringer BX600 amp. Sounds okay either way. I'd get individual pedals, though, if I really want to sound good. The distortion is pretty good, most of the rest of the effects are okay, but the flanger sucks.

Reliability : 6
Seems a bit delicate. I woulnd really "stomp" on it for fear of cracking one of the plastic pedals. Also, the dials have a tendancy to get stuck, which is a pain when youre in a menu. As for a backup, you dont really need one if you take care of the pedal. 2 words however: "Power Supply". Make sure you have one, I've had this pedal crap out on me while playing when i use batteries.

Customer Support : No Opinion

I usualy play all sorts of rock. I've been playing a few years and this is one of the first pieces of gear i got. Now, I'm looking to buy individual units, because, as mentioned, they sound better and you can control them more. But this unit is fine if you dont need a fancy effect . I use this pedal for distortion and noise reduction mostly, and those features are ok.

The manual is better than average at detailing the steps for explaing effects editing and creating patches. The interface to edit/create patches isn't bad if you have experience with this type of device, if not you may be a little frustrated. There is more parameter control over each efect than I expected in a unit this price. The pedal itself is easy to use although navaigating patches in a live performance is cumbersome if you need more than one patch and the addtional patch isn't next in the bank. Mine also hesitates when going from patch to patch, a bad trait for sure. I've set mine up with my own patches for chorus, octave, eq, and boost and I put a null patch in between each one so wherever I'm at I can always get to bypass without worrying about stepping on both switches at once. Generally, I use a patch for an entire song then go to something else or bypass for the next song. The tuner works fairly well and like one other reviewer said it can be an excellent direct devise; it can also be awful depending on your recording setup. Bottom line: you can get 'some' good sounds out of it.

Sound Quality : 6
My setup is a Fender Jazz-Boss NS-Keeley Compressor-ZOOM 506II-Boss EQ to Hartke or Behringer heads and Avatar cabs. I haven't had the unit be noisey. The effects I use it for aren't bad actually (see above) and if I spent more time maybe I'd find more. There's the rub for me, I'll spend a couple of hours learning and setting up a unit but I'm reluctant to spend more time than that. But that's my problem. Setting the volume level seems tricky. It depends on the effect(s)you're patched into and what else you have running; some effects seem weak, some strong as far as volume. I've found sounds that are usable and I like, but this is no be all/end all silver bullet of a pedal. And I agree with some of the others, the distortion settings are not usable.

Reliability : 7
It's plastic and a mass produced, high manufacturing volume unit. I haven't had any problems in two years or better but I don't rely on the pedal (or any pedal) so if it dies, it dies. I've used the ZOOM acoustic pedal for guitar for almost 5 years without incident and besides the fact it eats batteries it has been reliable. I have to give it a 7 since I've had no problems with either unit yet.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never used them.

Overall Rating : 7
I play rock, blues and country and I can get usable sounds I like from this pedal for all styles. I own the ZOOM Acoustic guitar pedal and love it, although I use only 2 or 3 patches. I've played guitar and bass for over 30 years and bought this unit as a gift for my brother who's a casual player. He stopped playing and has given me the unit, otherwise I wouldn't own one. I think you should be careful buying multi-effects and know what you're getting into. The sound quality of the effects probably won't match individual pedals. There's a reason top of the line multi-effects units have cost $500.00 or more in the past, although prices on all of this stuff is falling and value is improving. This isn't a great tool for a serious performing musician. However, it is capable of getting some good sounds, may not have inherent quality problems, and most importantly may inspire beginning bass players to play more and to continue seeking out their own sound and tone.

Okay, when I had my Peavey this thing was ok. Now I play a Warwick Corvette FNA through a Marshall, and I notice just how bad this thing is. If oyu have a crappy bass and a practive amp, then it is fun to muck around with. However for anything more serious, it just completely destroys the tone, even on bypass/tuning mode. This thing is very easy to use, especially when compared to the original Zoom 506! Editing patches is easy with rotary dials and simple +/- buttons to adjust things. The manual is great, with a complete listing of the factory presets on the back, which is a handy quick-reference guide.

Sound Quality : 7
Although this pedal is is meant as a stomp-box, I have never used it as one. I just have one preset I use all the time and just use this as a pre-amp and keep it sitting on top of my amp. I play a Warwick 4-string Streamer Standard, a 1994 Warwick Thumb Bolt-On 5-string, and an original Ibanez 6-string. The pedal is an inexpensive solution to flat tone. I just use a touch of "edge" distortion (the very minimum amount to give me a wee bit of bite), a bit of chorus, slight compression, touch of reverb, and I picked the highest EQ phase on the pedal. The effect is a little noisy, but I used it in the studio and it was ok with a little Pro-Tools noise gate. I use it live, and don't mind the little bit of noise, because live shows are never whisper quiet anyways. Occasionally I use an additional preset which is basically the same preset as my main one, with the chorus boosted a bunch, and that actually sounds pretty cool. It's not as clean as I would prefer (I have an old Ibanez Bass Chorus which is much cleaner, but the stomp box is a piece of crap and the on-off switch doesn't always work, so I don't use the pedal anymore), but again, for live applications, I don't care about a little noise, and I never used it in the studio, I used a chorus in Pro-Tools. I noticed that the distortions on this pedal really kind of suck. The bass synth effect is horrible also. The octave effect is cool, though, and I dig the defret effect, especially with a lot of reverb. With that setup, I can get a pretty good Jaco tone even with my fretted basses. I do agree with many of the others who reviewed this pedal about one thing though, when in bypass mode, it still affects your sound, and that's a bummer. However, if you have a side-chain effects loop, it's not as bad.

Reliability : 10
Like I said, I never used this as a stomp box, so it hasn't been put through any kind of stress at all. But I haven't had any trouble with any of the circuitry and the batteries last forever. (I use the pedal with a AC Adapter though). I'm too poor for a backup, so I always use it without one, and it hasn't failed me yet.

Never had to deal with them.

I play all styles of music, from country to jazz to rock and metal. When I try to get a certain tone out of the pedal, I can usually get it. Sometimes it's a little noisy, and it's not always the most brilliant effect you ever heard, but it's fine, especially for just messing around in your room or recording weird sounds. I've been playing since February of 98, so I guess like 6 years now. I just bought a Bass POD Pro to replace this pedal, but I think I'm going to have to sell that now, due to some money issues, so the Zoom isn't going anywhere. :) I play through an SWR Chrome 350 with Tube pre-amp and Genz Benz 210T-XB and 410T-XB cabs. If this pedal was lost or stolen, I'd buy another, since they're only about $50 new these days. I love this pedal because it's compact and easy to set up, it serves its purpose, and it doesn't fail me. I wish it were a little quieter, and I wish a few of the effects were of a little higher quality, but it's fine. I love the tuner, I use it all the time. It's a really easy tuner to read, unlike several others, and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I've compared this pedal to a Line 6 Bass POD, and although I liked the sounds of the Line 6 better, in order to switch channels on stage, you have to buy a channel selector for it, which costs anywhere from $75 to $300 depending on which one you want, and the POD itself is $350 new (for the small one) or $600 new (for the rackmount), compared to this 506II which cost me $100. I wish this pedal had better distortion tones, and the synth effect ought to either be overhauled or completely removed from the unit.

These people who keep saying how horrible it is are just mad because they thought they could get thousands of dollars worth of top-quality effects for around 100 bucks, which is simply foolish. If you're looking for a miracle, this isn't your pedal. But if you want to be honest about the capabilities you can expect for 100 bucks, then this pedal will be everything you want and more. Someone said they have a total pro rig, with Ampeg SVTs and all that, well if you have all that, you wouldn't play a Jay Turser bass through it would you? You wouldn't run your SVT through a Rogue bass cabinet would you? No, so why bother with a cheap effect like this pedal? Quit whining about it unless it promised you something it didn't provide. Sounds like some of you have too much money on your hands, but want to be tight wads when it comes to this pedal. How about a little common sense?

easy to use, patches are simple to adjust. This unit suits me to the ground as it is used just for home recording. I plug this unit straight into a midiman M-audio ozone and it sounds awesome. I took it out of the box scrolled through a few patches recorded it straight off and it sounded great.

I would suggest you forget the presets and build some basic one or two effect presets yourself. Most of the factory presets sound awful. The chorus effect is ok, the compressor/limiter effect is ok, the synth is very bad, and the distortion effects are bad. The tuner works well. The defret is just good enough.

I play all styles using a fender precision through a GK RB400-210. I like the tone of my set-up, so I don't want the pedal to mess with it. Minimal is best, so I just use the pedal for occasional effects (eg chorus, defret) and as an online tuner. I guess I could have three seperate effects boxes that do this stuff better but for how much I use it, this is good enough. It does these fine, the thing doesn't inspire me, it's just what it is.

Fairly easy to use (but the onboard tuner could be a bit more easy to use). Editing patches is very easy, (just twiddle the know thing round and press the +/- buttons to select the sound you want). There is a manual, it gives useful information about using the product and editing patches and everything.

For the price of the product I was expecting much worse. I still can't believe that Zoom managed to pull this one off. It got all the different sounds you'll ever need, and then lets you edit those sounds to get even more sounds! Very impressed with the sound. (I recommend this pedal for bassists who like "in your face" sounds. I find that other pedals like the BP50 from Digitech "pussy-foot" around the sounds, this pedal delivers the goods that Digitech was scared to deliver)

I know that everyone dislikes the plastic casing (saying that it can break easily), but who honestly performs in front of an audience purely to trash their effects pedal. Come on!! Very reliable and excellent for home recording. Who needs an expensive flashy pedal at home anyway? NO ONE!!

Wassup! This is a very easy thing to use!

Sound Quality : 5
Ironically, it has a PERFECT almost professional tone when I plug it into my sound card on PC (also good on a stereo: no noise/hiss). I recorded few wave files and there is absolutely no hiss or any other funny sounding noises, it sends the output in Stereo, so that must be good, eh? All the effects, when properly adjusted, sound good and pro-like, too! So, I guess that's the use for it from now on, because when I put it through my Behringer combo it just f**s up the sound and adds a lot of unwanted and unnecessary hiss screwing up the tone. The only time I can use it along with an amp is if I set the Compressor somewhere between 1-5 and leave the rest of the effects off. I guess if you're into home-recording this thing can be quite usefull, because it pretty much serves as an Analog to Digital converter with bunch of effects specifically tailored for bass! Sounds good to me.

Reliability : 5
It's a tiny little plastic piece of shit, wouldn't even think of stepping on it!

I have been looking at this item for a while now, i tested it out a well 5 times befor purchasing it, its distortion is very good, but as other people also have found out, if you play slap bass, forget this one, it gives you a shitty ass sound for slap bass, it almost sounds like a bunch of fuzz with echo, but otherwise this is a ver good buy.

This unit is very dependiable, the only thing i have found wrong with this pedal is the tuner, one second it will say you at a Eflat, the next it will say that your at a D, even i f you dont mess with the tuning on the bass befor and after you play with it.

I used to use a korg pandora (toneworks) for my bass, but i got tired of not being able to switch from a distortion to clean. The unit wouldnt let me hook up a pedal to it either, this one does basicaly the same exact thing for 150.00 dollars less that the korg, the only difference is that you have less options to choose from, which is ok because your not going to use many distortions on a bass anyway.

However you have to play while changing or you won't get the tones you desire. Yet Without the manual you would be lost, it tells you just exactly what to expect from each effect

I use a Spector bass with it (I don't think I would have such good tone if I used a crappy bass to start my chain), and a Frankenstein Ampeg Combo with a Q-tube 70 amp graffted in. Nice ampegy tone with a wide range of feels. and as for the reviewer who said a RP2000 was better I traded one for this (partially so I could still have effects and a new bass) and the RP2000 is better suited for guitar (I have played quit a few basses through the RP though).

Awfull quality and effect realism. That litlle box has plenty of effects so it's very versatile, but if something has a bit of everything and is made for everything it usually fits nothing like that piece. Such a crap as autowah or compresser I never deared to use in gigs as they were bad as nightmare. I was only satisfied with reverb, defret and chorus-2 effects, maybe the built-in tuner, too, other sucked a lot.

im using a cheapass ventura bass and a peavy amp. the pedal really is very very noisy on some settings, especaily the fuzz and other distorions. the annonying thing is the different sound levels of the effects, you could play one effet swicth the pedal to another one and it can go really quiet, easy to sort out, but a drag when there are so many presets. i normally play indie, rock stuff so i can normally get the sound i want easily.

My trusty old Sans Amp DI died. I was angry cause I thought this unit is build like tank. Those it is not Tech 21 fault cause previous owner open up unit and did not put back all screw cause the XLR connector to break. Anyway, I was in a crunch so I mike my amp. Next thing I know, the PA guy say he like the mike sound better and asked if I can just mike my bass. Since I don't have to worry about my output to PA any more, I find it a good excuse to get an effect unit. I check out BFX 708 but did not want to pay $30 more for the pedal so I end up with the 506. I want to say I love it but I will need some more gigs to really be sure otherwise it is a fantastic value.

I am currently using an unknown 4-string Galveston Bass and a peavy amp. It can be noisy, but it never becomes a cause for concern. the effects themselves ranges from a nice vintage feel, to a full-on distortion barrage, and all sorts of effects; you pretty much have everything if you aren't TOO demanding. I try to replicate tones from TOOL's Bassist, Justin Chancellor. i can sound pretty similar with the proper tweeking. all the effects should be good enough for the Beginner to intermediate player.

I've never really abused this pedal. It has a plastic top, and a metal underside. it has messed up lately, but i think the cable i'm using is to blame, not the pedal itself, i'm not sure. i wouldn't use it on a gig without a backup, but i'm more cautious then most people. this is probably the only area in which this pedal is below average.

It is nice and easy to use, and fun to play around with. I really enjoy seeing what it can do and combining the sounds. I don't like the action of the pedal - it is not a decent click, it is just a sold squish, and you have to look at it to check it has worked. Overall though it is good.

Sound Quality : 6
This has lots of cool sounds, but heaps of the create so much damn hissing and popping that I just turn it off, because it annoys the hell out of me. Clean sounds are basically no use, you might as well bypass it, but this pedal is good for chorus, octave, overdrive, wah and some of the weird synth things. The amp settings are just gimmicks.
Through a Roland 'super cube' this thing creates piercing feedback whenever distortion or any crazy effects are applied, but it is fine through my Marshall B150.
Not the greatest sound quality, but decent for the price.

Reliability : 8
It seems solid, and although it is made of plastic it is very tough. I seriously recommend the power adaptor, batteries are an expensive part of this pedal. I wouldn't depend on it on a gig, but thats just because it may create unpredictable horrible feedback or noise.

At first this pedal can be a bit tricky, but with some time it's very simple to navigate. Everything is adjusted with two buttons and one dial, so you don't get overwhelmed with a lot of buttons. Just a suggestion...but when you turn the unit on...hold down the right pedal as you power it up. This allows you to scroll through the effects without switching as you go. Then you just stomp on both simultaneously to use that effect.

Sound Quality : 8
OK...first of all...this is no Boss pedal, so the sound quality isn't superb. It can be a bit noisy at times, even with the noise reduction at peak. But for the most part the sound quality for a unit like this is excellent. I had a lot of trouble finding a distortion sound that I like on this pedal, so sometimes I combine it with my Boss Bass Overdrive pedal. They could also give you a little more room to play with the effects they give you. I also use a Cry Baby bass wah with this too, and it sounds great. I run this whole setup thru a Cate amp and an SWR 410 cab. I have used it many times live and it sounds really good through a PA. I have been complimented on some of the effects I get from this pedal...so it must be doing somethin right. I don't use any of the presets the pedal offers. I tune in all mine manually and I have been pleased for the most part. I give this pedal an 8 out of 10 for sound.

Reliability : 9
This is where I think it gets a bit shaky. I have not had any problems with this pedal, but the fact that it is made out of mostly plastic makes me a bit cautious of how hard I stomp on this thing. It seems like it can take some abuse, but I am not gonna jump on it to find out. I also own the original 506 and have never had problems with that one either. I would give this a 10 for reliability because neither the old 506 or this one have ever failed on me, but because it is made of plastic instead of a tougher metal shell, I have to give it a 9.

Overall this is one of the best multieffects units you can buy for your money. I don't think you can find anything else under 100 bucks that comes close to this thing. ZOOM did a great job of improving it this time and they still managed to keep it pretty much the same price. If you're on a budget and looking for a solid multieffects pedal with a good sound...go for it. If you have the cash to get something more then I would go with a Boss multieffects board (if you can find one). For an overall score I rate this at 8 out of 10. And my compliments to ZOOM for making a good multieffects unit for those who can afford to go out and spend 300-400 bucks.

Any one who has had a first generation 506 like myself knows what a pain in the ass programming that sucker was. This one is the easiest multi efx unit I've seen yet. Granted I still like one-effect devoted pedals because of the ease of tweaking my sound...but when I go gigging and I need something that isn't going to cost me an arm and a leg for batteries and gives me an immense amount of options, the 506 II is my first and last choice.

Sound Quality : 8
Working this unit with my Boss Overdrive, Chorus, and Synth pedal creates a whole new palette of Industrial sounds that I thrive off of. I do use my Ibanez EDC705, but believe it or not I like my piece of garbage Yamaha 250 RBX the most with this unit. Some of the efx do sound repetative to me, but then again I've set up all the unique ones in the first two banks so I don't complain. Unfortunately though the factory didn't do a good job of getting all the levels of the efx even with each other and the sound drops out momentarily when you switch patches...but other than that I love this sucker!

Reliability : 10
Hasn't failed me yet...the battery life in this puppy is hell of a lot longer than the first 506.

I'm a fourth year bassist and play primarily Industrial Metal...and with my Boss pedals and this unit in tow all I need is a techno beat and I'm ready to roll. I've created my own sound with this piece...and with a little time you can too. I wish it had more pedals to select any of the efx in the bank at once...but then again this isn't a DigiTech. Alone this pedal is good, but with others it just gets better!

A 3 is generous because this thing sucks ass. Like huge elephant ass.
It has some good chorus but the clean sounds sound choked on all settings. The Step sound is cool but thats about it. If you play slap
at all you might as well forget about this thing. This is just my opinion though.

I play in a band called Spatik and we are a hardcore/funk/punk/melodic
band and this thing blows ass because i might have a badass swirling chorus on and then go to clean, but the clean sounds like it just chopped off the bottom end. And if your a bass player you need that bottom end or you just might as well play guitar.

This is my third zoom pedal. I found the pedal extremely easy to set-up and use out of the box. The manual is extremely useful for knowing the presets. It took me about 20 minutes to go through the manual to understand how to configure my own presets, use the tuner functions, etc. Editing is easy and quick once you do it a few times. I actually would have liked a bigger pedal in size. I found this almost too compact for using while jamming, etc. The light weight makes it a little too easy to shift around and sometimes flip on its side if you pull the cord too hard. But, velcroing it to a pedal board would eliminate this problem. However, I do like that I can have the pedal on top of my amp for easy editing, etc. some of my larger pedals are difficult to have on top of my amp.

Sound Quality : 9
For $80, it's SUPERB!! Is it a bass POD? No, but for the money, I found the tones to be as good. When compared to other expensive pedals, I would rate a 7-8. But, I'm trying to keep in mind this is a budget pedal. With that in mind, I was really impressed with the sounds available. Some of the presets are noisey, but you must keep in mind that even expensive units will be noisy when flange, phase, or distortion are used. These are just noisey effects. I also noticed this pedal was far noisier when I got too close to the pedal. I would easily say that 75% of the presets are usable without any editing. This is uncommon. The unusable presets are definitely unusable unless you need weird sound effects for a recording. The fat bass sound (A3) is incredible. I use a 4-channel keyboard amp since i need something that can run a drum machine (a zoom 234), a bass guitar, and an electric or acoustic at the same time. Therefore, I need pedals and a good preamp to get a solid bass tone. With the A3 preset, I have a 15" with two 10" cab tone! This zoom definitely added something to my tone.

Reliability : 9
For this pedal, I have to rely on past experience with zoom products. I have a zoom 2020 guitar pedal that had been dropped countless times from 3 feet onto a concrete basement floor. It is has had beer and coffee spilled on it as well as a cat hurling a hairball on it (yes, this seriously happened). Although this pedal is not as solid as the 2020, I don't expect problems with it. It has a typical 1-year warranty.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I've never had to deal with them. I know when I got the FP-01 pedal, the cord was missing with it. Musician's Friend sent one within 3 days. But this is not really Zoom's customer support.

Overall Rating : 9
Nothing receives a 10 unless it is top of the line. Again, for $80 you get a super-friendly and usable pedal with a variety of effects and uses. If you NEED super high quality effects, get a bass POD rackmount or the digitech BP-8. but for a 1/5th of the price of a bass POD, you get close to one--especially if on a budget or want to spend your money on a top-of-the-line bass (where your money should be going anyway).

Easy and strait forward to use out of the box, need to review manual to program. Once you've programed it once or twice, you'll have no problem.

Sound Quality : 7
I am using this with an ESP B-205 bass, a customized Yamaha fretless and SansAmp Bass Driver DI all into either a SWR 12" combo or a Peavey 12" Combo. I am not big on effect for bass, I generally like a clean sound. I just wanted to have the option of adding some effects here and there without spending a lot of $$. The Zoom works very well for that. The effects sound good to me, although they are not as good as more expensive units (obviously - what do you expect for $79!), and they can be ajusted from subtle to obnoxious. (Some of the presets are very obnoxious!) I especially like the wah and octaver. Never thought I would use the wah but I like it so much, I'm finding uses for it! If I want overdrive I use my SansAmp, it sounds better. The unit is very quite when you are not playing, but when the gate opens up...hisssss!

Reliability : 7
Although this this is made out of plastic, it seems pretty rugged. However, I wouldn't through it across the stage to a buddy.

Never dealt with them.

The Zoom works well for me, I've been playing bass for about 6 years now and I play praise music in a large church and also play in a Christian Rock band. Between the two, I've played about every style from Orchestra to contemporary/pop to Jazz to Ska to Rock. I love the fact that you can mute this unit and use it as a tuner, great for tuning between songs. The main thing I wish it had is a better display, like a 10 character lighted LCD instead of a two character LED that makes you look at the manual every time you program it. (But I guess that might make it cost a lot more than what its worth.) Bottom line: If you have a critical ear, stay as far away from this thing as you can, you will hate it! If you are just looking for some quick effects on the fly and don't want to fork out $400+, buy it and have fun!

About 20 minutes out of the box, I understood it completely. At first
the MANUAL will severely needed. Once you get screwing around with the thing it is quite simple. The manual is very easy to understand.
Since there are so many effets, you'll want to always have the manual handy, so you know what effects you have selected.
It has 33 effects.36 rewritable pathches, that can be copied, rewrote, and restored to the factory presets. A decent Auto-Chromatic Tuner(easy to use). And that's about it. Has lots of little features that are nice. You can hook up an expression pedal to it. Can be powered by a 9V DC Adapter. Good to have, Because The batteries last 28 hrs., but if your like me, I can drain them in two days go to their site for more info.
I give it an 8, could be more simplistic, but then I guess it would cost more!
more and be larrger.

Sound Quality : 8
Well, Its' pretty d@mn good for 80 bucks!!!!!!!!!
It is an extreme value, trust me. I compared the effects on it to many other $60+ pedals, mainly BOSS & DOD. It equaled most often either almost exactly the same, the same, & in some cases, even better. There is one thing I don't like, I wish it had a better distortion. The distortions(12 of them) on it are often very weak, can be adjusted to a good sound though. The best distortion on it is the FUZZ. and with some minor adjustments, sounds like a good DISTORTION.
I give it an 8, sometimes noisy at high volumes.

Reliability : 9
It is molded plastic, has a metal undercarrage. I think it can take a pretty good beating though. I would gig with it.
9 'cause it's plastic. Other than that, it's fine.

Overall Rating : 9
It's a great effects module with an even greater price. It REALLY pays for itself if you add up the price of the effects seperately. And would still pay for itself if you only used two or three effects!
The FRETLESS simulator is AWESOME, add in some HALL(reverb), some compressor, and a scotch of FUZZ or DRIVE (types of the distortion), And you've got a NEW-MILLENIUM J.S. BACH sound that sounds great playing his MASTERPEICES. And with some RESONANT WAH, FUZZ, and few more minor things, You've got the sound of the greatest bass player to ever walk the earth, CLIFF BURTON!!!!!!!
What more can I say! Quite readin' and go buy the d@mn thing!!
This is meant as an introductory to effects. If your a "pro"lol!,Go get a DIGITECH RP2000!!!!!! 400 bucks, but well worth it!
My Both guitarists in my band have one.
9 because there are better ones out there, but, it does what it should and at a price that kicks @$$!!!!!

This unit takes some tweaking, but after you're done, you should have a very good sound come out of it. The manual helps a lot if you haven't ever had a multi-effect pedal (like me).

Sound Quality : 8
I use a custom-made Peavey '98 bass and a BX-15 CRATE amp. Sometimes I'll also use my BOSS ODB-3 Overdrive Pedal with this. The unit is a little bit noisy, but something that everyone seems to overlook is the ZNR (ZOOM Noise Reduction) which helps with the noiseyness (sp?).

Fairly easy to use. The knob addition is a very nice feature. Patch editing is simply. I have 2 issues, the delay times are very short I would like to see more control over that. You cant run the reverb and the delay at the same time because they run of the same Mod. effect. But, for the money it packs a decent punch.

Sound Quality : 8
I use this pedal for live applications. I am using Ampeg SVT4 pro and 2 svt 4X10 cabs with either a P bass or jazz bass. The pedal is quieter than the original 506 but, it still is a little noisy when the gate opens up.
The chorus is very nice sounding and they added more chorus pre sets. They all sound fine, If you use a hint of reverb, they really open up.
I think distortion/synth sucks on all basses so I dont even touch those presets.
Obviuosly a BOSS chorus pedal sounds much cleaner. Once again, for the money you can't beat it.

It is fairly dependable. I would make sure that you protect it in your gig bag, it looks like it might break easy if tossed in your gig bag.

When reading this review or if considering buying this unit, please keep the cost in mind. Zoom has done a great job in improving the original 506. You get a lot of muscle for under 100 bucks. If you are looking for crystal sound and have the dough, go buy a POD(not impressed with those either). If you are on a limited budget or have a cheasy amp, this pedal is a great value. It is fun to play with, makes a great headphone practice tool and doesnt sounfd half bad in a live application.

This is pretty easy to use, with a straightforward manual. The presets give you good starting points for different sounds. Editing the patches is not too complicated, and with a little tweaking I could find the sounds I was looking for. I play a variety of music, ranging from metal to blues to funk, so I like being able to set up a bank of patches for each style. My main gripe with the system is that it does not come with a built in expresion pedal like the Korg AX1B. They want you to spend more money to buy Zoom's expression pedal, but any expression pedal will do.

Sound Quality : 8
The sound quality is what you'd expect for a multi-effect pedal. It's not going to replace your Mutron, Fulltone, or other high end pedal, but then again, it's not designed to. I use it as a laboratory for sounds when I'm writing songs or learning them. It gets me in the ballpark and didn't break my wallet in the process. This pedal is basically a way to find out if distortion, chorus, flanging or other sound effects suit your type of music. Once you know the sound you're looking for, go out and buy a quality pedal or rack system that gives you that sound.

I mainly use this pedal with a Washburn jazz bass with active pickups. I use either a Fender 25w practice amp or a Dean Markley combo. I run mine through the effects loop of the amp, so there's little noise. Make sure you use a power adaptor though, because batteries don't last long, and without power you'll have no sound at all.

Reliability : 8
Seems reliable, but I hhave my doubts about the plastic casing. As long as you don't stomp on it, it should survive. If you're using it onstage, be sure to place it somewhere out of the way where it won't get thrashed.
I wouldn't use this as my primary effects system if I were at a gig, but I do take it with me. It serves as a backup in case one of my main pedals breaks down. It's small enough that it fits in my gig box and doesn't get in the way.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I've never had to contact them for support, but I have heard that their support is not very good. Apparently it takes forever to get a reply to a question, and they are reluctant to repair/replace broken equipment.

Overall Rating : 9
Overall, It's a pretty good pedal for the price. I think it has better sound than the Korg AX1, or similar multi effects. The downside is the lack of an expression pedal. I'd probably buy another if it were lost or stolen. For the price, it's hard to beat.

Use it as a learning tool and a backup piece, and it should serve you well. I have yet to find one effects system that can give me exactly the sounds I am looking for. For serious work, I have different pedals daisy-chained together to give me exactly the sound I want. The Zoom is used for experimenting, tweaking and to get me out of jams due to equipment failure.

Pretty easy to change sounds and the manual is fine. One knob moves around the clearly labeled effects, +/- buttons change whatever parameters can be altered. There are quite a few, so reference to the manual is necessary at first.

Sound Quality : 8
At first appearence it looks to good to be true, and of course it is. Close inspection reveals 16 bit processing and 33.1k sampling and it can be noisy. However this unit is very cheap, the price of one Boss pedal say, and is excellent value for money. The distortion models I think are pretty good, you dont want to turn a bass into some horrible guitar like fuzz, and since you can alter the gain, holding back on even the thrash preset can give a nice subtle effect. Patch A2 does a resonably good Jack Bruce. The chorus is quite nice as is the reverb, so some eighties sounds are there as well. (if you like that kind of thing!!) Though the delay only gives one repeat it can sound like a nice slap-back, nice for rock'n'roll, but no layering Chris Squire tricks. The auto-wha is another good trick, fun funky bass. Only one gripe really, it can be noisy. Its got a noise reduction setting, but really thats only a gate. Turn up some high eq settings and it can really hiss. Rating would be a ten otherwise.

Reliability : 7
Its a bit plasticy but I only use it for recording. Wouldn't be that happy stomping on it, although it is built as a stomp box.

Customer Support : No Opinion
No idea, never dealt with them

Overall Rating : 9
I'm quite happy with this thing, and the bottom line really is the price. You get lots of effects, though with limited editing, so if you really find you love a chorus on your bass, you can get a dedicated unit later. It surprised me 'cos i wanted only distortion and an amp model for a vintage sound for recording and was pleasanlty surprised that i could get quite close to the sounds i wanted, especially as none of the analogue pedals I tried (Boss, DOD etc) got me what I wanted. If you have no multi effects at all you can't go wrong for the money...its worth it for a couple of the presets alone. Its not a POD, and you can't have 8 effects at once without something missing...and yep it can be noisy but its not a bad little unit and great fun.
