It is very easy to use once the logic is worked out, tho as previously stated, initially the manual is a great help.
I bought mine used and the manual was in French.
If you are still looking for the manual for this unit
http://www.zoom.co.jp/archive/Previous_Model/E_9001.pdf

The site has all the Zoom manuals in all the languages, from what I can gather.

This will take you to a more generic page

http://www.zoom.co.jp/archive/Previous_Model/

From there you can click on parent directory and get a list of languages, which seems to also include their current products.

One thing to stress. This is NOT a multi effects unit, e.g. an effect may contain reverb as a parameter, as distinct to reverb as an effect, but you can only use one effect at a time. Zoom's terminology indicates that a program is really just an effect with preferred parameters set.
Its intended use is for enhancing sounds in a studio, some presets being designed for gating drums, enhancing vocals, getting the best out of a piano, etc.
There are comments on the lack of distortion effects. I found, using a strat copy which doesn't have overly high powered pickups, the level for a patch would need to be no higher than 50 (out of 99) to maintain a clean sound. Higher levels actually give a nice overdrive as opposed to fuzz/distortion sound.
The harmoniser is not intelligent, the robot is a gimmick, the other sounds are actually quite nice, quite usable.
This thing, for one effect at a time is easy to use and sounds much better than the 505ii or many other effects units.

Reliability : 8
Similar to another reviewer, I find that it doesn't always immediately fire up when switched on, unless I tap it against my palm. Maybe it has something to do with dirty battery contacts. It is not a floor pedal, and with normal treatment should be sufficiently durable.

At first I thought I paid too much, but compared to a Zoom 1010, 505ii, Korg A5, I think this sounds nicer and is easier to get it to do what I want. I would replace it, but wouldn't expect to see another, altho I would preferably pay about half as much!

pretty damn easy - though you do need a manual to work out exactly what combination of button pushes stores your programs, etc.

It is, afterall, a digital unit that requires several button pushes to get to where you want.

the manual is lovely - 50 pages long and written rather better than the average. It goes into aspects of each effect generally - so ideal for a beginner or those who want to understand the unit (or any unit) more.

Number One effect for me is the stereo / ping-pong echo... it is very smooth and the Diffusion settting gives it a lovely reverby gloss as the sound echoes away to left and to right.

Such quality!

it was my only echo box for about ten years and i used it solidly, all the time - until i bought a Line 6 Echo Pro because i wanted that filthy tape-echo sound instead. I'm constantly tempted to bring the Zoom 9001 out of the retirement box... but then why did i spent #300 on the Echo Pro :-(

Reverb as such is not an effect i use much, but the reverb here was highly praised at the time in magazines.

The rotating speaker is not bad - and can be set up to slow down and speed up between settings as the real thing does.

There's no Phaser effect, but there is a flanger - which i found too harsh for the kind of spacey Jarre effect i'd be after. Chorus is also a bit harsh, i think, but i'm not a chorus user.

Auto panning is something i used often on the Zoom 9001 and it is very - in fact, i have two of them and on complicated mixes i like to get various automated left-right effects for synth parts going into the mixer. Reverb can be added on top of panning.

Remaining effects such as the Limiter, Enhancer etc are usually biased (optimised) towards specific instruments. But there is no Compresser for the Vocal settings - though it's easy enough to use a guitar setting if you need that. Pitch shifts are OK... the Steel Guitar patch is pretty good.

No Distortion/Overdrive effect, if you're wondering, but i can repeat what a previous reviwer has said - theis unit can create some lovely recordings of acoustic guitar.

Finally, there is a test tone generator (including A440 etc) and a seashore effect!

For FUN ONLY, the Robot setting randomly changes the Harmonizer settings for a kind of instant Kraftwerk.

I have not found it to be noisy (i use it mostly in the mixer effect loop)

Reliability : 9
i've had mine from new - used, as i said, constantly (not even using the proper wall wart) and it still works completely reliably.

Only thing i found was that if i used metal jacks on the output then my "spider" wall wart plug would touch and short out....

but isn't that just my own fault!

the plastic box would not survive if you drove over it... unlike a Boss.

Is this the place to say that the Zoom 9001 is the studio version of the Zoom 9000 - same little Star Trek box, but without distortion / overdrive / auto-wah etc.

Overall Rating : 10
I like this unit so much... but don't use it (them! i have too) very much now - it's kind of replaced by the Boss SE70 and the aforementioned Echo Pro. I do still bring them out for indvidual instruments when needed and also for the occasional gig, when i need the portability and don't want to carry my rig on the train - the Zoom 9001 weighs nothing!

I wanted to put this review on, because previous have been a bit negetive - i'm really not selling my two ever, they just have so many uses and are of sufficient quality to keep them in occasional use amongst my pile of quite high-end gear.#

Would i replace if nicked?!

well... if someone nicked my Line 6 i'd just put my Zoom back in the loop and not worry about replacing the 6!

I Loved this unit. I had it velcroed to the top of my keyboard and could easily switch between presets. People were always commenting on how great our vocals sounded through it. Now it quit working and I have not been able to get it serviced anywhere.

Sound Quality : 8
I was running vocals through it.

Reliability : 6
Until it broke it was my only effects unit. If anyone has one in good working condition I would be interested in buying it if the price is right.

Terrible support. Now that they don't make it, they don't support it.

Switching sounds is pretty easy, editing not bad but you may need the manual, which is pretty good, although I think I've lost mine.

Sound Quality : 8
I put this through the effects loop of my Crate CR-100EV amp, and other times loop it through my mixing board for other instruments and vocals. Nice, deep reverbs, good Leslie effect, nice chorus, robot is fun, harmonizer OK but not "intelligent" so the interval doesn't vary based on key. Flange is cool. Note that this is supposed to be a "studio" processor with sections of effects for various instruments (drums, vocals, keyboards, bass etc.) that are pictured over the LCD screen, and which don't include electric guitar, so there is no "distortion" effect per se. A little indicator shows which instrument the effect is supposed to correlate with. However, I've enjoyed all the effects I've mentioned with my electric guitar. I also once made a gorgeous recording of an acoustic guitar lead using one of the "studio" reverb settings (preset number 2). Several of the effects make my otherwise somewhat dry Roland Juno keyboard a bit more involving as well. The unit strikes me as only a little noisy. I've definitely heard worse in that regard.

Reliability : 8
I've never had a problem with mine. But the thing is obviously cheap plastic, so don't drop it and do get something to store and transport it in! I kept the original styrofoam and glued it into a plastic saxophone reed case for storage. I also use Velcro to keep it from falling off of my amp or board.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never talked to them b/c I haven't had any problems.

Overall Rating : 8
Most of the effects are competent for something, although there are more exciting and more professional units available, especially now, 10+ years after the 9001 came out. But it is very compact, programmable, stereo, and decent sounding. If you can get one inexpensively and are willing to take care of it, I definitely think it's worth having. Also, although I'm not using them, I seem to recall from the manual that in addition to the built-in presets, which can also be reprogrammed and saved, you can also save in up to 40 user presets. I guess that manual would be worth unearthing!

Could not get a manual...had the feeling when requested Zoom is laughing...My Digitech pedal is much better and happily supported.

Noisy crap without the manual.

Reliability : 1
cannot depend on it and never alone at a gig.

The support sucks!!! I made a request several times with no one ever contacting me...I guess they have the "we don't care because we don't have to." No wonder why I went to Digitech.

Overall Rating : 1
Not!!!!! Stay away from this unsupported piece of crap unless you like dust collectors.

Basically, every patch in here was re-written by myself. But it was all very easy. It's kind of limited in the way of editing effects, also.

Sound Quality : 6
Well, when I first started using it, people couldn't believe how cool everyting sounded that I recorded. I thought so too, until I bought a Studio Quad, now I really dislike that poor 9001. It's good, but not near professional. I think that any high school guitarist/producer would love this box. The ROBOT effect wins it an automatic 10 (metaphorically speaking). I mystified people with the harmonizer.

Reliability : 6
One of the WORST power inputs I've ever dealt with. An EXTREME pain. Quit on me once on a gig. Something must be done about that jack. Very good mic trim.

Overall Rating : 9
FOR SALE! If you're a normal person, and you've never touched an effects processor, you will WANT TO RECORD so badly after using this. Who thought up this goofy box shape? A really nice thing to have if you record anything. Unfortunately, FLATTENED by the big rack-mount guys.

"Good" is a relative term. Lot's of cheesy space sound effects. Fairly straight forward to program if you have any digital inclination. Manual? Who reads manuals?

Sound Quality : 5
Lot's of airplane sounds. Distortion is fairly weak, other effects are alright as long as you your ear is untrained

Reliability : No Opinion
No problems, I'd take a few pedals on stage with me, but more out of the phobia of having your whole sound in one battery driven package.

Would'nt know

Overall Rating : 6
For the couple hundred bucks I spent, it's better than others in the price range. If you're fanatical of your sound, look elsewhere, if your looking for a less expensive effects unit, get a Boss ME-8. Some things are cool cause they're sooo good, some are cool cause they're soooo bad. I suppose this is both.

Terrible as direct input to guitar amp. Lots of hiss. Chorus settings quite good but lacks depth and warmth. Distortion Crap. Digital delay, forget it. Fairly easy to use. Some good factory preset sounds. Got frustrated with this very quickly sound wise. Input to a Fender Champion 110 at home is barely acceptable, would not gig this... it could be embarrasing!!!

Sound Quality : 5
Distortion hard to get a dirty sound. Needs to be on bright setting to get clarity on all settings. Flanging quite acceptable.

Reliability : 7
Occasionally will not boot properly when switched on. Other than that, very reliable. Not gig quality unless DI'ed.

Haven't had the need as yet and I've had it 18months apprx.

Overall Rating : 6
There are worse around. For the average amateur you can get some good sounds. Don't really like the fiddley small processor box. My preference is for a unit that can be handled a bit more easily.
