Zoom GFX-4

It's very easy to get good sounds out of this thing. Once you are through the manual, it's like stealing candy from children.

I really like the three-knob-per-pedal, which gives you a feeling of handling several stomp boxes.

I use the Gfx4 in front of a Fender FM212 R with 100 watts and a Avora GT 25, both solid state. I play a Cheri Les Paul with DiMarzios, Fender US Telecaster, Stagg Flying V with Shadow P90'S and a Harley Benton HBL500K Les Paul copy. I use a Tubescreamer 808 and a Hellbabe Wha in front of the GFX. First of all, the Drive section is great. It's perfectly for my needs and offers a wide range of sounds, between creamy blues and evil metal. I use mostly delay effects and different OD and distortions and of course the ampsim, which makes my solid state amps sound more tube like.

The expressions pedal is kind of useless for me, the range is too samll to modulate the effects in a senseful way. I use it as Volume Pedal to mute my guitars.

The first thing that borke was the Power supply cable. I replaced it and after 4 years of use the onboard power connector broke and I repaired it. It never let me down on gigs (which are about 60)

I play a strange kind of progressive stoner rock and I play guitar for about 8 years now. I have the Gfx4 for about 5 years now. I am looking for a second device as a backup on ebay at the moment. I wish it had a tap speed function for the delays...

It's pretty well laid out and designed. You will need the manual to get your head around how it's arranged, but once you have it's very flexible and can be easily tweaked. The three adjustment knobs for each section of the pedal make it easy to, say, adjust the delay time halfway through a song.

One very irritating problem is the slight pause when changing patches. When you playing you have to get used to hitting the pedal half a second before you need it to kick in. I guess this should be expected given the price of the unit.

The tuner is great, and is far more responsive than the standard Boss tuner pedal that everyone uses.

The pre-programmed sounds are very over the top and mostly horrible, but it's easy to strip them back to basics and create nice, subtle effects.

Generally the sounds are good but they are rather noisy, and sometimes rather synthentic sounding. The better your amp is, the more you'll notice the pedal's limitations. The distortions are probably the most impressive, I managed to get a setting that was almost indistinguishable to the crunch channel on my Marshall valve amp. I'd reommmend you use the compression on the unit to get the most out of the distortions. Phasers, delays, wah etc are all pretty reasonable. They're not as good as individual predals, but perfectly usable.

The amp sims are another very useful feature that means you can use the pedal for direct recording into a PC or whatever. They take a little tweaking, but can be made to sound pretty good.

My first one went funny and some of the buttons stopped working. Luckily, it was just before the warranty expired, and was replaced. Generally, it seems pretty solid, and has survived lots of gigging, although the PSU wire is far too flimsy and breaks easily.

I took my first one back to the shop where I bought it. They sent it back and gave me a replacement. Never dealt with Zoom themselves.

Overall, this pedal will suit a beginner fine, or someone who's starting to play gigs. It gives you a very broad palette to work from while you find out what effects you like and use the most. More experienced (read: fussy!!) guitarists will probably not be too impressed. I don't really know how it compares to other multieffects, as I've not used many.

I used mine quite happily for about three or four years, including tons of gigs. I've now changed it for individual stomp boxes, which do sound a lot better. I miss some of the effects the Zoom has though such as pitch bending with the expression pedal, and I might start using it alongside my stomp boxes.

As it's my 3-rd processor from Zoom Co. I know their ideas so for me it's very ease however while setting some patches I had to chech manual.

My first opinion after one week "hard working" on it was : it's not good... but...
After 16 years playing giutar today I'm playing in three bands : gothic, hard metal and clear pop so I'm using quite diffrent settings. Like it was mentioned som are noisy (flanger) but not so bad you would be dissapointed.
Next thing which is very important for me (keeping on mind my 3 bands) : I need good Metal sounds, dark Metal and clear with chours, delicate tremolo, delay, reverb. I spent many hours to get my sounds but I did it!!!! And I have very critical point of view on any Metal effects, distortion, overdrive (as my favourite kind of music is metal)
You will have to make some experiments with distortion with or without EQ but with equalization from Pitch , Flang or Tremolo as EQ..believe me : it will take time but you will find what oyu want. Chorus :great, flange : could be better, Pedal Pitch : in Zoom 8080 was better (without any additional effects of course). So, I really happy for this unit. I heard Boss GT, Digitech, and I decided to Zoom again- Was thinking about GFX 8 but there is no volume knob ... the rest it doesen't matter for me.

One suggestion for ZOOM Corp - power supply : do something as it's really crap.... I changed after consultation with one of Polish electronic corporation ( they advised what should I use). Body is quite solid, after few years all pedals works fine, no complains. Expr. pedal is Ok but coudl be little biger : I not a brownie and my feet are litle bigger that this pedal... :/

After spending many hours with plenty of effects thie one gives me what I want. I don't have to go with God know how much quantity of single effects playing several music styles. Sometimes I wish the wah would be better but it's not bad and nothing special (exluding coolwah :))) )
And one question : why there is still no option to mix for ex. pitch with tremolo or with chorus ...??

Once I read the manual and understood the editing and group/bank arrangement, I think it is fairly easy. The manual is well written and I had working patches quickly.

Not to detract from the FX side, I think the absolute BEST feature is the true bypass feature when selecting the active patch. I wish more FX units had this feature. this allows you to make sure the levels are correct and you know what the amp is doing befo eadding any effets.

OD: better than most Boss/Digitech to my ears (almost a stomp)
Dist: Not bad, beter o the "over the top" dist
Delay: not bad, not able to get fine adjustments on delay time (close)
Mod-Effects: Yeah, the Flanger is noisy, but overall the mods are good.
Reverb: Not a Lexicon, a lot less $ and good variety of verbs.

I use this with a Soldano Decatone and an Allen Tonesavor.

Looks to be well built and I actually bought this for a backup to my high end rig. It is built better than a lot of the cheesy ones ou there. I've always though the Boss GT-5,6,8 had the most robust construction, but this isn't bad.

I bought this used, but is seems to have held up well and looks like new.

If you are a purist and like the true bypass capability, this is one of the few multieffects units that does that. For the price I think this unit absolutely rocks!

Quite easy to use if you regard the manual, which is intelligibly written. Due to its TWO modes (usual multi-effect bank-switching AND stomp-box-like operation), you've got to use your head a bit to get its versatile opportunities. There's need for a bank-shift pedal, so that you would not have to bend down though...

Most of the sounds are great and if not abused relatively noiseless. But, hey folks!I simply can't understand why you folks adore the distortion of this thing. You will need hours of adjustment to get your sound right (that cannot be blamed upon any cheap gear, which I have not!)!

It works! I did gig with it under any circumstances and it never let me down. Looks quite fragile though. Crappy AC-Adaptor. Pedals could be bigger and more distant from each other.

It does its job quite well. If you want this for distortion, go and buy another one or at least test it whether it fits your sound-visions. Great to try out different types of effects and to find your sound. Mind the price!

Switching between patches within a bank if straighforward. Easy to see display with ability to customize patch name. Editing patches is easy. The manual is comprehensive and logical.

I use a variety of guitars including a Strat with Duncan pickups, Gibson V, Aria TS-600,Dillions with Humbuckers and P90s. Also used for Bass compression. The ZNR (zero noise reduction) feature keeps the backround hum at very low levels. Very comprehensive set of distortions. Best suited for Rock and Metal. The expression pedal is very versitile and can be programmed as a volume, wah or effect change pedal.

Very solid construction with a metal body No problems in the 3 years. Used at weekly band rehearsals and live performances. I've never needed a backup.

I've never needed support from Zoom

I play mainly rock and blues. This pedal is better suited for rock, clean or metal. 8 years playing in bands and 20 years overall.
I play through either a Fender DSP 90, London Reverb or Crate Vintage 20. A very good device for direct mixing into a board. The pedal is well suited to tailor for particular amps as you have 60 patches to customize. I wish there were better choices for amp modeling. Better than the Digitech products as I compared the GFX-4 closely to the RP-300. I have many Zoom and Samson products which have all been a great value.

I give it 9 because the manual isn't that useful at showing how to use the basic stuff. That said anyone who has touched a multi effects unit should have no problems as its fairly easy. You can press the manual button, and the switches acts like 3 stompboxes (drive, modulation, delay/reverb), very similar to the Boss ME-50. Patch mode is fairly straightforward, with 3 patches in each group (toggled by the footswitchs). bank up footswitch goes to the next bank. 60 patches in total. onboard tuner is easy to access by foot, so not bad for live gigs. While no bank down footswitch has been mentioned heaps it isn't too bad, as long as you sort your patches out in a good order. Setting up the expression pedal to custom stuff like tremolo speed is also easy to do. Few other advanced things that need reference from the manual but thats about it.

Sound quality is overall very good. Unlike most multi effects units this has a true bypass (mono out only) that avoids a/d/a conversion, which is good when you use it with a few stompboxes (like myself). Most of the effects are top notch. The entire drive module is well done, with top distortions/od and a decent acoustic sim (needs lots tweakin like any acoustic sim though). The fact the distortions are actualy analog means they sound much better than digital distortions eg. Boss Gt-3, Gt-6. The envelope and auto swell (sounds like Boss sg-1) are also good. Compressors are decent once tweaked. The modulation stuff is mostly excellent. The only bad ones are the pitch shifter / pedal pitch, which like most multi effects is unable to do octave up with out artifacts. Got some decents sounds for 5ths (for RATM - Know your enemy solo), since you can hide the artifacts behind dry signal but wet only (as in whammy sounds) is not too great (but its like that on just about every multi effects around). The choruses are top notch, especially stereo chorus. The Flanger is also good, is a little noisy but most flangers are by nature. Phaser is one of the best i have heard, tremolo is good. I also like the step effect, makes for some cool weird sounds. The Wah is good, but for some reason doesn't work that great with distortion, I got some goods sounds with tweaking though, and also with use of amp overdrive. The Delay module is probably the highlight of the unit with some really good effects here. The reverbs are very convincing, much better than reverbs ive seen in other multieffects units. Echo is also good, and has hold function too, which is a bonus. Reverse is very cool, and allows for wet signal only, making it better than the Boss DD-5 and Digitech X series Digidelay which can't get rid of all dry signal in stock. Obviously with dry signal, the sound of a guitar playing backwards (the whole point of reverse) doesn't come through.

This unit is also one of the quitest multi effects around, with a built in noise surpressor / gate (ZNR), and also has an amp/cabinet simulator for recording direct. Amp sim is decent, of course it can't replace marshall stack but its there.

Tuff plastic and metal. This aint gonna brake easily, the footswitchs are just as sturdy as other units like Boss Gt-6, Digitech GNX. Would gig without backup.

Top buy, a bargain at under $200. This is better than a boss gt-6 in many respects (better sound quality in many areas) and less than 1/2 the price.

i'm using esp kh2 and other shit...i'm a metallica fan kinda guy..the wah sound is too mild...i cant get it loud and extreme like kirk hammett sound. help me..anybody?
changing modes(between patches) really effect the sound..u have to tap on the paddle a little bit and toe it down to get the original sound back.

i have to add few more gadgets like a crybaby wah(i use gfx4 pedal for volume), boss ds2 and other rack shit.

since that i play blues, rock and heavy metal...it need to be added few more shit..
i've been playing guitar since 1989...oh yes..i have line 6 pod 2..it's fucking hard to use on stage..need a rack of footswitches! yet..too small..(my advice..dont buy this thing!)

It is pretty easy to get a good sound out of this unit since it looks like the juxtaposition of 3 stompboxes. Editing patches is just as easy. It is impossible to bank down the patches though, ant that is a major annoyance when playing live. The manual is well done overall.

I play with a Washburn Bettencourt model guitar (the cheapest one) and my amp is a Peavey Bandit Transtube II. The unit is not significantly noisy unless I am using extreme levels of distortion Then the noise reductor does its job. I bought this unit mainly for the metal distortion it gives. It is dynamic and sharp after you tweak the equalizer. Reminds me of the Boss Metal zone tone.
The effects are all pretty good quatlity ones with enough parameters to satisfy most guitar players who want a good sound quickly. You will get good Iron Maiden distortions with it. The fuzz sound is good too, along with some other distortions. Some are bad though, but all in all you can find what you want.
The clean sounds are not so good, as they lack tone. It takes a lot of tweaking to get a half decent tone for clean sounds.
The Wah is correct, nothing that can compare to a Cry baby but it's okay to use it once in a while. If you are a Wah freak, buy one separately.
Chorus is good, especially the stereo one, phaser and flanger are pretty good, and the echo/ reverb section is also satisfying and provides all that a guitar player needs.

That's where the major complaints go. I have had this pedal for 2 years and a half and last year I began to have problems with it. the plastic switches just aren't sturdy enough. I have not been tough on it though, but they are stuck and randomly interact with the settings.

I play mainly rock, from funk to metal, with a special emphasis on metal. this pedal is good for it. I have been playing for something like 11 years. If the gfx4 was stolen I would not buy it again even though it is not a bad unit at all. Better than some more expensive units. But I just wish it was sturdier. I am planning on buying a used Boss gt3 from a friend for really cheap. The distortion of the GFX4 is better so I will mainly use the gt3 for the very good modulation effects it gives pluggin it in though my amp's effects loop.

well i just got this thing and i think most of the effects are really easy 2 except maybe for adjusting the expression pedal which isnt explained well in the manual other than that i edited 3 effects in the second day i bought it and they sound outa this world

i kinda have small equipment (esp explorer and a small 30watt amp)and the gfx4 seems to work perfect with them ...i was surprised how quiet that thing is i edited a distortion and created a monster but when not playing its reallll quiet even without noise reduction..

since this is my first multi-effect i surely will go on a gig with bec i went on a gig with boss pedal(ds-2)and it sounded not so bad but this baby i would definatly take to a gig without backup

i mostly play power,thrash and this effect has it all except for the wah i just cant get out of it the wah used by metallica in their solos ive been playing for almost 2 years but the rest is gr8 i compared it with the me-50 boss and i didnt find a dist i liked in the me-50 so i choose the gfx4.

After the first day I purchased it, i stayed up until wee hours trying to figure it out how to work this thing. I must say that in manual mode it is a piece of cake since it works just like any normal stomp box. In program mode things kinda get awfully complicated at first,but after two days it seems that program mode is much better to use than manual mode. Editing patches is more user friendly than i had expected. THe manual is informative, clear and easy to understand. You will have to study the manual carefully and be brave to try new things out if you want to get the best out of this product.

I use an Aria Pro II gt series electric guitar and a pair of mesa boogie amps and cabinets. The first thing I noticed was that the factory presents sounded so crappy I regreted buying it. It either sounded too noisy or too weak or too digital or should i say very fake. It took me a week to thoroughly set all the presents all over again to bring out the hidden quality of the product. To add even more realism and life to the sound, the VAMS technology really brings out the character of the sound, even if it is no match to the real legendary fender or marshall amps(c'mon, how much are you paying?!). Not all effects mix with each other. Some sound good alone but sound crap when mixed and vice versa. Most of the present drive effects are okay and the modulation effects sound really good. The delay effects are creditable but you will have to spend time to set it to your liking. All i can say is wether the effect sounds good depends on the user's settings.

On my opinion this unit is surely dependable if compare to it's other units such as gfx 8 and 707. My friend bought a gfx 8 last month and one of the footswithes snapped and ran out of place. I found that the footswitches on the gfx 4 are more stable and durable than gfx 8. The expression pedal is also very sturdy. The only draw back of this unit is it doesn't have a bank down switch which is not very stage friendly during gigs. The circuits seemed to be very reliable and I don't think I need a back up at the moment.

This is the first multi effects unit I have ever bought and I must admit I am very happy with it. I get more that I expected and could possibly ask for compare with the price I paid for it. Those who are seeking to buy their first multi effects processor can give this unit a try.

Nothing new once you are in this business. Moreover, BOSS-like layout makes thing even easier. Knobs (not push-buttons) is a great touch!

LP copy with SD's, Rosewood body Tele with '63 no-name (very bright) PU's, Rickenbacker 1997 to SansAmp TRI-A.C. to ZOOM GFX-4 to either Fender DeLuxe 112 Plus or TORQUE TK50. All sound good, depending on the music you are palaying.
DI'd into my Roland VS sounds MUCH better than Roland's COSM FX.
GFX-4 could be noisy when the flanger is set too high. Even ZNR doesn't solve the problem since the noise starts few seconds after you struck the last note. Rather than that it is SILENT.
By playing with the knobs you can obtain the sound of any top-class guitar player who doesn't use ZOOM as a distortion FX. For real distortion look around for something else.
Compression, EQ, chorus, delay are VG!. Flanger good, but noisy! Reverbs are VG (be careful, though!), delay, vibrato - good. Wah - @#$%$!!! Try VOX or CryBaby instead.

Looks pretty sturdy. Don't know yet.

I'm in classic rock/blues and everything near to it for about 20 years. For my setup GFX is just fine (switched from DIGITECH PR-7, was using number of BOSS pedals -OD, CS etc. - didn't like 'em). If it were solen or lost - which is unlikely - I'd probably get another one used or look around for something of this type.
I wish it had another footswitch for jumping from BANK to PROG mode. Maybe it would be a good idea to have less banks with more patches in every bank.

Very easy to use,having used zooms before I didnt really have to use the manual at all but even if i hadnt its nice and simple to use.

1-very dissapointing.the most important thing to me is distortion..the d.s are ok if you want a mildly driven sound but if you use a lot...aaargh it just sounds so awful, really fake and fuzzy.Im using this with a jackson and 100 watt custom made valve amp.The rest of the effects are ok.I had a zoom 2100 before which pobably came out at least 2 years ago and the delays and distorions are much better.

I would use it in a gig but only when very sober and being careful as there is no bank down pedal which could prove dificult when thing are heating up.

I play heavy stuff mostly,ive been playing for at least 6 years.If it were stolen id get something else,Im probably gonna sell it anyway cos im not happy with it.I guess its ok for a lot of other styles but dont use it if you want good distortion-this ruined it for me.Also the tuner is a bit weird,the amp simulators IMO are pretty rubbish,there's no prescence control,and for some reason the compressors just make your whole output really noisy(with distortion)!Im comparing this mainly to a zoom 2100 which as i mentioned is older, and i cant see any advantage the gfx-4 has over it apart from looking nice,and being slightly faster to change settings.obviously the footpedal is not a bad thing.

This is a follow-up on the previous review from a dissatified player. Actually, this unit is easy to use and to program.Very intuitive, much better than a GT6.

This is the point; very important, it has a true bypass, so if you want the clean sound of your amp, once switched off, it's out of the way. The quality is as good as a GT6, though, less expensive. The fact of the matter is that those kind of devices will emphasise the mid frequency; if you already have a mid amp (Boogie as ex) It will tend to sound very piercing , unless you cut the highs and the mids on the patches. I use to have a Traynor, wich was relly bright, and a Caliber 22 Boogie; the GFX-4 was ok but a little too bright and aggressive for me. You have to have the right amp in combination with the right guitar and effects to achieve a good warm sound; the best match I have found is the Fender Deluxe hot-rod (tubes of course); it sounds warm, musical and the patches on the GFX-4 sound much much much better. I tried it with my other amp that I got recently, a digital Yamaha DG80 2x10 , and it sounds good but not as good as in front of a tube amp. Those things are in fact a preamp and most of the time, they are used in front of the amplifier preamp. I tried in the effect loop but did not really like it. In fact if I have a Fender or Yamaha , it is the preamp I want to listen to! The distortions are good, the fuzz sounds very much vintage, good compression and overall, all the bread and butter effects are there(Distortion, fuzz, tremolo, compressor, overdrive, wah,ring modulator, pitch shifer, chorus, flanger. etc.

Have it for a year, very sturdy and I think it will last

To sum it all up; good sound and contrary to what a previous review said, the Boss GT6 sounds more brittle than a Zoom , more synthetic. I had the chance to A/B a Zoom GFX-4 side by side with a GT6 and the GFX-4 was more realistic and , i'd say, had a denser sound. I don't think the GT6 worth all the money they sell it for. It is a good machine , but in my view, it tends to make everybody sound the same.

I find the GFX4 pretty easy to use. I checked the manual a couple of times, and that was quite enough. The trickiest bit was how to program the expressionpedal.

I use the GFX4 for chorus, delay and reverb. These three types of effects are of high quality, and this unit maintains alot of the original sound. Noise has never been a problem, as long as the noisegate is activated. I can't comment on the other effects, since I have not really used them to any greater extent. For its pricerange the soundquality (at least the effects mentioned earlier) is great. Also, the bypass function works fine, taking the unit clear out of the signalchain.

It's not sturdy, nor is it flimsy and weak. Pretty standard quality for something not made of metal. It has withstood livesituations, and seems OK construction-wise. I would depend on it, but it isn't made for being abused.

The GFX4 has worked fine for me, and hasn't acted funny yet after a year of use. Watch out for the weak power-input, though. The cord might fall out if you aren't careful.

I have not dealt with Zoom, Samson or the distributor for Sweden since there has been no need for it.

I play 80s popmetal and light rock. This style of music, or at least to suit my taste, requires pretty extensive use of effects and this unit has stood the test. I have since moved on to rackmounted effects, but the GFX4 still gets used from time to time. I would, however, not buy it again if it were stolen. When I had just purchased it, I probably would have gotten another if I lost it, but not now.

This unit has two major drawbacks. No MIDI and no footswitch to move down a bank. I can understand why it hasn't got MIDI, since this really isn't a professional piece of equipment, but the lack of the footswitch is pretty strange. This means you can't go from, for example, A2 to A1, but instead has to go thru A3, A4 and A0 to get there. Unless, of course, you want to bend down and use the little bank down-key.

I compared it to just about everything in its pricerange (DigiTech, Boss, Roland) and this came out on top for ease of use, nice design and quality of sound.

The GFX-4 is pretty daunting at first, for a first-time user of a multi-effects unit. The manual is thinner than I'd imagined, but it has everything explained in great detail. As I always find, it's better to dive right in and then look at the manual later - hands on experience is more effective for me, personally.

The unit, as a solid-state multi-effects unit, has a lot of 'knobs and buttons', placed just about everywhere. At first it was a little overwhelming, as I had no previous experience, but it's easy enough to get used to. I realise that there are far more expensive units out there, but this has a lot to keep the user happy, and as such, its ease of use could potentially be impaired somewhat...not so! Once you've had a look about, it becomes pretty apparent. Effects are divided into 'groups', with there being 4 groups (A-D). Each group contains 5 'banks' of preset effects (0-4), with each bank containing 3 separate effects. These effects are adjustable via different knobs that sit above the chosen effect (ie, 3 knobs for each effect). The whole unit can, obviously, be controlled by a simple set of footswitches. There are 4 footswitches - one to control the chosen bank, and 3 to cycle through the 3 available effects per bank. The only disadvantage to this setup is that, to cycle through the available groups, you have to bend down and press one of two small buttons, that serve this purpose. Should be sitting down, two more small buttons also serve to cycle through available banks.

The expression pedal is also very simple to use, and can be customised for a variety of functions - wah, pedal pitch, volume control, etc. Integrating the expression pedal into the effects for anything other than volume has proven a little complicated, but then, I haven't really read the manual as much as I probably should have!

Editing patches is also very simple. You select the parameters you wish to keep, when in 'manual' mode, and press the 'store' button twice. These parameters vary, from the amount of gain you wish to have, to the seconds of delay, to tone, etc. Very customisable, yet very simple to use. When you've saved a patch, it gets stored in one of the 60 available 'user' patches (as opposed to the 60 pre-set patch slots, which cannot be overwritten). If you're currently in 'group A, bank 1, effect 1', the new, modified effect gets saved to the same place, but in user pre-set patches.

The amp and cabinet simulators are very easy to use also, and a brilliant addition - anything from a single tube combo, to classic amp stacks.

The 'drive' option is also easy to use, representing many different sound options. From the thick sounding 'Fuzz' option to the bridgey, twangy, absolutely gorgeous 'metal sound', these can be used in conjunction with up to 8 separate effects at a time. Brilliant.

I'm using the GFX-4 with a Roland Cube-15 amp and an '87 Jap Strat, usually with neck pickup selected, and running the amp on clean channel. I don't have too large a problem with noise from the effects unit, due to the 'ZNR' facility on the unit. This is a peice of noise gate technology, which is customisable to suit the different effects. You simply press the 'ZNR' button once, and, on the LED screen, a number comes up - from 1 to 10. You can quieten the background noise with a setting of 10, with the trade-off coming, apparently, in sound quality of the effect itself - it becomes more 'fuzzy'. I say apparently, because I've had very little, if any, experience of this myself - the sound quality to me remains much the same, with only the guitar volume decreasing slightly. Without a doubt, the 'ZNR' facility is a great help in eliminating background noise.

Effects volume varies with chosen effect, but, if you plan to go on stage, you can simple set the patches you'll be using to have a similar volume, and so this problem is eliminated.

The effects don't sound weak, because they are all fully customisable. If something isn't to your taste, I can pretty much guarantee that, with a bit of tweaking, you'll come to love it! There are endless options for customisation - you really have to see the unit in action to realise just how numerous - and great - these options are.

The sound of my favourite artists are easy to obtain, in that effects like 'Vai' already exist - pre-customised to get a screaming Vai lead, in this example. Satch is also represented, as are a number of other guitarists. More generically, timeless sounds, like the classic British Marshall rock sound are represented, as are numerous other classic sounds.

I can easily depend on this unit, and, apart from the fact I couldn't afford it, I wouldn't use a backup. What do you wanna do with it - jump around on it on stage? You're audience will love you for that...I don't think!

To all those who question its reliability in previous reviews: do you have size 20 feet? Or bad eye-foot co-ordination, giving you poor control over pressure exerted!?

Built from metal and plastic, it won't break in a hurry. But, as with anything, treat it well - if only to preserve the beautiful looks! The expression pedal itself is reassuringly solid, as are the footswitches - they ain't gonna drop off!

I play a lot of different styles of music, but mostly Blues. I find that one of the effects in particular approximates the clean channel on my amp, but with a warmer sound, which I love. However, true to Zoom form, this unit is built for overdrive - and it does that extremely well! As such, it's excellent for rock!

I've been playing for around a year now, and I own a Westfield semi-accoustic, a generic strat copy (my starter guitar, to which I'm ever grateful) and the aforementioned '87 Jap Strat. I've only played the latter through the effects unit so far, though, but I don't foresee any huge differences in performance, with regards to type of guitar and amp combination used.

If I lost it, I'd consider myself careless, and if it were stolen, I'd be very angry. I'd get another one as soon as the insurance money came through...! 'Nuff said!?

I love the amp and cabinet simulators - a brilliant addition - and the sheer customisation opportunities the unit presents. Excellent for stage use, I can imagine - and soon it hopefully will be used on stage. Looks great, lots of lights! :) In addition, the 'drive' options, and sturdy expression pedal are great.

I compared it to a Zoom 5 series, but decided to go for this, for 40 quid extra, just because I could. Cleared out my piggy bank, but it was worth it!

I'd like to have had a metronome built in - just anything to help keep time. But this doesn't really detract in any way from the all-round greatness of the unit.

It definately helps me make music. Sure, there are sometimes when I just take it out, if I want a general clean sound, or if I want to make use of the built-in Boss effects on the Cube-15. But it helps to make anything sound good, really! It's great for getting different sounds out of the guitar.

Its pretty simple

AWFUL, the unit is so damn noisy its unbelievable. All the distortions are rubbish they all sound crap, you cant gig with this thing because if you play it load there is sooooo much extra noise. The tone of them is crap, they all sound horrificly fuzzy and not solid. The wahs and stuff are shit aswell.

If your gonna gig with it take care, the unit seems so feeble and almost 'flimsy.'
Also the adaptor cable is v.thin

Overall I was EXTREMELY dissapointed, the sound quality was a real let down. If I could go back I never would have bought this thing, and would have spared the time of me selling it.
Take my advice and dont buy it! Its full of cheap amateur tones which might just be suitable for bedroom-play for a kid's first thing, but not even that - its too expensive.
If your looking for a good range of quality distortions buy a BOSS pedal, thats exactly what I went and did.

Yet another update to my update of my original post - OASYSCO.

I left the GFX-4 at home and started taking my stand alone pedals - Morley volume, Boss CE-2 (great understated chorus pedal, BTW), a friend's Boss Blues Driver for OD and the amp's channel switching pedal for amp OD, and a tuner pedal. I thought with individual pedals I'd be able to tailor my sound better... wrong...

I had already customized my Zoom GFX-4 to the 10 or so patches I always use - a couple of stadium OD patches, a crunch patch, a couple of clean chorus/delay patches, an organ-like patch (for intro to Black Magic Woman), and a few other specific patches.

Try configuring dedicated pedals like that in real-time. My volume was all over the place... hit one pedal to turn on OD - oops too much volume, back off on the volume pedal... oops, too much - forget it.... Uh-oh, need to tune up... oh the pedal doesn't light up unless it has a AC adapter... bend to the floor... sucks up too much tone, so have to manually add and remove it from the chain... Oops, the light is fading on the CE-2... I guess the battery's dying... what happens if it dies altogether?

The GFX-4 gives me great OD at low or high volume. The tuner works with and has a mute option. I can flip form the organ tone to a clean chorus tone with a single footswitch. I like the OD tone.

My only gripe (besides having to manually switch banks, which I have overcome by moving my fave 16 patches to one bank) is the over-sensitivy of the pedal when set to control volume. Move it a little and you may get much more volume.

OK, I'll remedy that with an outboard, passive Ernie Ball 6166 with tuner out. But I'm using my GFX-4 again. Having all that capability pre-programmed and accessible is just too convenient not to use. It'd be one thing if I didn'tliek the tone, but I do like it and have it tailored for my particular gutiar and amp combination.

Why I ever thought using individual pedals would be easier, I don't know.

The GFX-4 is easy to use, for basic functions.

However, if you wanna know complete operations, I cannot say its easy. I downloaded the manual and studied it before buying the unit. The day I bought it, I went through the manual again. When I got home, I was still lost. In the end, I must have went through the manual 3 or 4 times.

After using the unit for sometime, I suddenly discovered a "malfunction". If you step on the pedal hard enough, you enter the manual mode. Hmmm.... But it doesn't work on every patch. Eventually, I realise that this "malfunction" is really a special function that is very briefly described on the manual. After testing out for some time, I finally decided not to use this special function for fear of damaging the unit, so I reset the pedal UP and DOWN levels again to prevent entering that special mode.

Also, the patches are grouped. You cannot switch group with the foot pedals or switches. So its a minus. However, I find that you can set up the unit for a gig with 15 patches in a group. If you need more patches, just bend down to switch group.

I'm using the GFX-4 with my RG-series Ibanez. I use different amps all the time because our band go to a Jam studio, instead of having a regular place.

I like the sound quality from this unit. The only comparison I have draw is from my old Digitech RP-3 and the one I almost bought, Digitech RP-300.

In terms of easy of use, I prefer my old RP-3. However, in terms of sound quality, I realise that the RP-3 is really yesterday's technology. Matching up GFX-4 with RP-300, I find RP-300 to give better sound. However, GFX-4 is capable of producing nice sounds too, just that I have to spend more time learning on the various effects.

Very reliable during home practices and studio jamming. So far, I have brought it to 2 live gigs and the unit hold up reliably.

On the whole, I am very satisfied with this unit. It is relatively cheap, looks real cool and gives satisfactory sound quality.

If it were stolen or lost, I may buy it again. But I would research the market to see if there are any new products around of the same price range.

The only thing I hate about it is the inability to access every patch using just the foot switches.

Although there are some options to place some effects before COMP or after EQU, it would be nice to have more flexibility in designing your own sounds by permutating the effects around.

Very straight-forward, got the hang of it in a day

Most of the distortions are heavey, The booster distortion is rubbish, the wah is cool, the phasers chorus delays detune etc are all wicked. The echos and reverbs are cool.

I wouldn't pick a fight with it

It looks awesome, the pedal is realy cool, and its great for playing in the dark with all the lights. Its a bad-ass piece of equipment either for bedroom playing or live. If I could make It better I would have more lighter vintage distortions and a drum-machine. Its well worth the money and better than any othe in its league

This is my 2nd update to my original review.

We are nearing the point of playing out live. As such, I'd like to address the "Ease of use".

First off, this pedal is easy to program and change parms, though I still have to consult the manual when trying to copy a patch from one location to another. Other than that - very easy.

Secondly, how easy is it to change patches during live play? As long as your band has dead air between songs and you remember which patch you want for which song, you should be OK.

Patches are arranged in 4 bands labeled A,B,C,D. Each bank has 4 sub-banks, labeled A0,A1, and son on. Each sub-bank has 4 actual patches.

The only problems are:

1. To switch from one bank A,B,C,D to another, you must bend down a punch a small button with your finger.

As long as you group your moft often-used 16 patches in a single bank like "A", this won't be much of a problem. If, however, you have a separate patch for each song, switching banks is tricky if you don't have much dead air between songs, within which to switch.

2. To toggle certain effects in a patch, like turn off chorus, or turn on reverb, you must put the unit into MANUAL mode. Once done, then the current patch functions as if it has 3 individual foot pedals - which is very cool, but not all that useful. The problem is that you have to reach down and punch another small button with your finger to put the unit into manual mode.

If Zoom could provide two small foot tap buttons to scroll through banks and toggle in and out of manual mode, the GFX-4 would be a much more useful unit for live play.

As it is, I use mine in practice and plan to use it when we gig soon, but I do wonder if separate echo/reverb, chorus, and OD pedals would easier to control. Then I ask myself if I really want a pedal chain to worry about - especially if they all use different power sources... For that reason, the GFX-4 is more convenient.

If I were to grade this category, I'd choose "8" for ease of use when used in personal practice and "6" for live play.

I am currently using my GFX-4 with my Sunn T50C amp and Gibson ES-137 P90 semi-hollow archtop. My gosh, what a fantastic combination for blues and rock!!! Whew, I love the tone I get from this combination - and I'm talking about tone at gig level volumes.

With just the processor, I'd grade this category an "8". With the amp and guitar, an "11"!

if you can read the manual, or have used multi FX boxes....you SHOULD be able to use this. EASIEST? nope..but that dont matter...SOUND matters..

SOUND matters. I used this as my main effects unit for about a year.
It sounds better than any Digi-crap, or Boss, or Korg multi that I played in that price range, and i have played most of them. WARM and Fuzzy, IF you dont use too many FX at once...I only used the mods, Echo, and reverb...usually 1 or 2 at a time..Very Nice envelope fiter...decent Wah, nice chorus, trem, phase...used moderatley..Amp sims? dunno....overdive and dist ...they all kinda sound the same to me..I use a TS-9/808 mod and a Zoom PD-1 for OD.... OK I guess..but the mods and echo ROCK...very warm...Run into Crate VC-6112 all tube amp with all my analog FX in front of it. It's at the end now, for backup. retirement, the good life!

Very reliable....MANY OUTDOOR Florida gigs at Skippers Smokehouse and other dives. No probs. One knob fell off. BFD.

the bottom line with this product for me is, ALMOST ALL of my effects are now analog...this sits at the back of my chain as a very reliable backup...I can mute the front end of my pedal setup, without putting the amp on standby, and if an effect takes a dive I have a good backup for all of my sounds. I use it to record direct at home..It sounds fine...No noise. No problems. Very nice sounds. I'd buy it again as a backup, and now they are even less expensive.
Listen, compare...this is NOT an AMP modeler. It is a stompbox multiFX. No triple rectifiers in here. But Buffalo Springfield's "For What It' Worth" is...!!

There are a lot of great preset patches ready to use from the moment you turn it on. Editing patches is very simple, and once you know the basics described in the manual, you can explore the features very easily. The manual is great and really helpful.

I use this with my Washburn BT-2 guitar and a Peavey Rage 158 amp. At low volumes it sounds great, but the bass on the GFX4 nearly kills my amp. but when you play it through a big amp it sounds great. It can be noisy with very high gain and some modulation effects. my favourite bands are oasis, dire straits, u2, and metallica. the USBLUE setting gives me a sound that sounds very much like Mark Knopfler, and one of the metal presets satisfies my need for metallica sounds. i'm still working on U2 and oasis... :)

I haven't had this long enough to be 100 % sure, but it seems to me that it is very solid. i would rather get a backup guitar than a backup effect set if i had to choose.

i play many forms of rock, and the GFX 4 suits me perfect. i have been playing electric guitar for about 2 years now, but once i got this, i experienced a new glow in my guitar playing... (it was my first shot at guitar effects!) so it is definitely inspiring. My favourite features on it has to be... the metal and USBLUE settings in the DRIVE section, and the chorus effects. if i had to mention a negative thing about it, it has to be that the board it self is a bit small, and in the heat of playing i sometimes manage to hit the wrong pedals with my big feet... :) i also agree to what other people have written, it should also have a bank down switch. but these are no big issues, i'm extremely satified with this, a great sounding set at an affordable price!

I have owned the GFX-4 for about half a year now and love it...
I used to own a korg ax1000g which was way to clunky and to analog for me.. The patches are very easy to edit ..just press the button and turn the knob its so easy...and its nearly always sounds good..
I had the manual a few nights before i bought the unit and after reading it once or twice i understood the basic ins and outs of the unit which helped me so much ..and after buying it i found out how easy it all really is!!

I own an EPIPHONE les paul series guitar through a peavey 112 bandit which was the perfect PUNK sound that i wanted ...The noisiness ..?? i did nt notice much at all as i use low gain distortoins and if there is any noise i use the noise gate on a low setting ...but even on a high setting it doesn,t block any of the sounds i produce that my freinds new dod effects pedal does ..it always cuts out the harmonics..yes i can get the sound i want ..i have a sound nearly exactly like my fav band no use for a namewhich is a nice smooth distortion.i use the lead ,and chorus aswell which i love to fiddle with all the time.. and if it doesnt sound good through say a recorder i can turn on the amp sim which only has a bit to fiddle with but gives such a good sound..all up i love the sound!!

I use this all the time giggin but i do have back ups all the time while playing...and yeah i suppose i do depend on it allthe time so yeah its quite dependable as i play it every day and use it 1-2 times a week giggin...

It doesnt have the best customer support...i had trouble with the drive module button sticking and they told me to just go to the shop i got it from and ask them...and then to make it worse the shop said id have to send it interstate and pay $150 to fix it nearly a third of what i payed overall...i ve just learnt to live with it....overall there is no customer support.

I am a punk musician and its a great match it gives me the smooth distortions and lead that i want to hear for the low price...
i have only been playing for 3-4 years now but i played bass guitar in a ska-punk band for3 years before hand...if it was stolen i would definently buy a new one...or hunt the bastard that stole for a few years..
I love the easiness of use and how i can customise the effects to my liking my fav thing is the distortions easily kicks ass over the other pedals i own..
i wish it had a bit more stuff in the amp simulator as it doesnt have to much in it..
it doesnt exactly help me make the music but it helps me get the sound i want in the music and since their is so many effects i can use a vast array of effects in all of my songs..
i also love the look of it..this isnt what drew me to buying it but its more of an added bonus when people see it and just go f%#k how cool is that...so yeah i really love it!!!

I previously had a Zoom 9002 and so was fairly familiar with the way Zoom processors work. I still refer to the manual sometimes for certain functions but it's very easy to edit the patches once you've played around for an hour or so. Manual is good enough to explain the simple procedures required to edit and uses plenty of disgrams which can be helpful. It has a built in tuner which I find to be much better than the tuner on my Digitech RP2000. The GFX4's tuner is more stable whereas the Digitech can show a string as sharp, and then flat a couple of seconds later without touching the tuning head. The Zoom unit seems to be less sensitive to whether the note has just been attacked or is in decay which may be a negative for some people, but for me it gets me close enough as I'm not fanatical about getting tuning to within a nano-cent. The longer I take tuning, the less time I spend playing.
Unfortunately the only input is for your guitar and so it misses a CD input for backing tracks. I suppose Zoom consider this as a processor for live use and have the PS04 for practise and jamming, but it would have been a useful addition.

I was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality provided by this processor. OK, so maybe half the factory presets were naff, but they gave a good basis to tweak parameters to match things up with my amps and guitars. Some of the distortion patches were great and I didn't have to make ANY alterations whatsoever to some of them (VAIDRV is great!). The built in noise gate (ZNR) helps for some of the distorted patches which may otherwise be quite noisy.
The clean effect needed a bit more work in my opinion as the clean factory patches are pretty weak, but you have to accept that these companies can't produce a processor that will sound superb with every guitar/amp combination and so tweaking is generally a must. With a little time I got the clean effects sounding great. I think that these multi effect processors have come on leaps and bounds in the past couple of years and I can get just as good sounds from this as I can from my individual stomp boxes and all in a much more compact package.

It's never failed me yet, but I don't think I'd ever gig without a backup. It does seem quite plasticky and flimsy compared to my Digitech RP2000 which is my main processor. I use the GFX4 now as a backup but only because of the quality and features of the RP2000. I would be quite happy to use the GFX4 live as it sounds good enough which is the most important thing. I also use the onboard effects of the AVT150 quite a lot (pareticularly the distortion) and just use my processors for additional effects such as harmony and delay.

Useless! When I first got it (3 months ago), I wrote an email to Zoom, basically saying that I wanted to tweak patches and I would find it incredibly useful if they could provide me with a list of the parameters for the factory presets. I've not heard from them since despite sending a second email asking if it is usual for them to simply ignore their customers. Despite the fact that I'm very happy with this unit, I doubt I'll ever buy anything from Zoom again as I like to deal with companies who stand behind their products, not sell them then forget about them.

I've been playing guitar for 20 years, play mostly rock and metal and have owned a multitude of effects from individual stomp boxes to pedal style multieffects to rack mounted units and the sound quality from this after editing to my preferences is up there with the best of them. Some of the distortion effects are at least as good as my RP2000, if not better, and although it may not be as good an overall package, it is still excellent considering it is #200 cheaper than the Digitech. I don't think that Boss multi-effects are as good as either Zoom or Digitech (I owned a GT3) particularly the distortion effects patches.
If stolen or lost I would dearly love to buy again, but like I said earlier, I won't do so unless there is a complete turnabout in Zoom's customer service.

If you are content to use the preset patches right out of the box, this thing is a snap. Pick any one of sixty presets, press the foot switch, and you're in business. However, the distortion settings are a lot more aggressive than I like. Any parameter is editable, but READ THE MANUAL several times before you go too far into the editing. The good news is that this unit is extremely versatile and every setting is changable. The bad news is that finding out how to get TO the setting to change it can be a challenge. More good news: you can't screw things up too much. There are sixty presets and sixty identical "user" patches. The presets can be edited on a one-time basis. You can't save them, though. Not to worry. If you like the editing, you can save it in the "user" location. If you really bollux things up, you can reset the whole unit to as-it-came-out-of-the-box and just call it a day.
The manual is well written, but very spare in its descriptions. As I said, be prepared to read through it several times. It will be worth the effort.
I like this unit because of its versatility. You can get everything from subtle little tweaks to rip-raging thrash-n-bash. The expression pedal can be assigned to numerous effects. There's also a not-very-well-docunmented foot switch under the toe of the expression pedal that switches you from "program" to "manual" mode on the fly. This is neat during a performance, because you can call up a preset patch that has, say, distortion, modulation and reverb. Press the expression-pedal footswitch into "manual" and you can switch on and off one or more of those effects with the "module" foot switches while you're playing.

I'm using this with a Strat, a Tele and an Ibanez AF120 jazz box. I play into a Peavey Classic 30 or my Mackie mixer/tape deck. There is a bit of noise on some of the more distorted settings. there's a "noise reduction" setting which helps a little.
Geneally I play at fairly low levels, so I'm not the guy to ask how "meaty" some of the effects are. They sound darn good to me, but I'm not really cranking the volume.
The pedal wah is not as full as the Vox wah I used to own. Otherwise the effects are convincing. Especially for the price. I got a whole lot more than I expected. I doubt I'll ever use some of the patches, but having them just gives me something more to edit around with.

Have only had the thing for about a month. Yes, I'd take it on a job without backup. but then, if it were to conk out in the field I'd just make do without.

Have not needed to contact the company.

I really like the fact that this unit comes complete with the power supply. I don't trust batteries and I resent paying 25 to 30 bucks for plug-in power. Not a problem here. There's no provision for battery power at all, which might be a problem if you're going abroad.
I play jazz and R&B. This is a good match in that I can get almost any sound I can think of. I can also get a lot of sounds outside my style, and I have to be careful to call up the patch I really want. There are some pretty unlikely neighbors in the patch bank, and if you want a smooth "fusion" vibrato, make sure you press bank pedal 3. If you step on one of the others, you might get something reminiscent of Hendrix or Grand Funk. Doesn't do much for a Cole Porter slow dance.
If this were lost or stolen, I'd probably buy another, just because I've already invested so much time learning the ins and outs of the editing process. Like so many other effects, familiarity and practice time give you the ability to really make music with the thing.

This is a follow-up of my review of 03/26/02. In that review I stated that "the pedal wah-wah is failry lame, but usuable and convenient for those of us who use wah-wah very little anyways". What a goofus I am!

I was paying more attention to what others said than trying to exercise the wah pedal effect fully for myself.

The patch called CoolWah is excellent. The pedal is very responsive and I could easily do 70's funk with it. Crank the overdrive on my amp with the GFX-4 in the effect loop set to "Coolwah" and Jimi Hendrix watch out. Excellent breadth of tone.

The more I play with the GFX-4, the more I like it. The chorus are, as I said before, excellent! So are the delays.

I don't use phaser or tremelo much in my types of music and I never did like vibrato, so those effects don't get much use from me.

As for noise, yes there is some. There are several wasy to decrease the noise:

(1) lower the master volume knob on the GFX-4. Doing so also lowers the amps overall volume, so you have to decide...

(2) incease the noise gate setting. I don't want to unnaturally cut off any notes, so I have steered clear of this for right now.

(3) run it through the front panel instead of the effects loop. Unfortunately, if you do that, then the amp's distortion doesn't sound as good when combined with clean settings on the pedla like delay+chorus. It really does sound better in the effects loop.

(4) edit the patch and lower Zoom's volume setting in the patch. This cuts down the noise while not overly affecting the overall volume when you use the master volume knob.

You may actually have to use either of the 4 methods enumerated above, depending on the effects you are combining, keeping mind mind that the compresor, phaser, and OD effects are the noisiest.

The gFX-4 is not as noisy overall the the GFX-8 and is really no more noisy than any other multi-effects pedal. So keep that in mind when shopping for your next multi-FX pedal - they all are noisy on certain settings, certian amps/guitars, etc.

Great pedal. I'd buy it again. I love the way it looks - almost as if it was designed for my Sunn T50C, but that's not why I got it. In fact, I couldn't tell what it would look like from the pix.

I bought it because I like Zoom multi-effects pedals, having graduated through most everyone they've made in the last 4 years (including the GFX-8).

They are generally easy to use, are generous with the number of effects and sound decent.

Very fiddly, supposed to be user friendly. Got use to it's working after an hour or so. This is not a piece of Pro Gear!

I play both electric and acoustic, I was using this for Reverb & Chorus on acoustic. Very Quiet and clear sounding. Didn't rate the overdrive sounds (I own POD and Sansamp TRi-Ac v.good)way too fizzy!

I wouldn't gig this without a back up, I sold it because of this. The mains adaptor has a very thin power lead to unit, this could easily be sliced thru'.

If you are a pro' don't buy this as it will not last a year of gigging twice/three times a week... keep your old pedals. Howeverif you are a 'bedroom' player you will have a lot of fun. Wah sounds are fun.

It's pretty easy to use, took a couple of days to get used to it, but I was able to get some great sounds editing the preset patches and then creating some of my own from scratch. The manual helped, but it could've been a bit clearer when explaining the patch editing process.

I use this with my good ol' Cort SG-1000 Les Paul ripoffn and a Marshall Valvestate 20 amp. It's a pretty basic setup, but it has worked pretty well. I'd say that for its price range, the GFX-4 has about the best sound you can get. The distortions are analog, which makes them great compared to other digital distortions in this range. The 2-stage distortion (OD boost & distortion) really packs a punch. The choruses, flangers, delays, reverbs, phasers are all great, they sound very pro. The wah is good also, unlinke some reviews I have read. It's not as good as a Crybaby for instance, but then again this is a multieffects console, you can't expect that much from it. The only thing I don't like that sometimes the expression pedal's range feels a bit steep, that is, feels more like a step than a gradual change. It can be a bit noisy but the ZNR takes care of that pretty well.

It feels pretty sturdy, it's part plastic and part metal, so it's not indestructable but I think it could take a pretty good beating and still work perfectly. I have gigged with it without a backup, and it has never failed me.

Never dealt with Samson/ZOOM.. all I know is they have a decent website.

I've been playing for 8 years, I play alternative grunge and mostly modern rock. If it were stolen, I'd think about getting it again, mostly because of the price-sound value. If I had a bit more cash, I'd go for a more expensive Boss console or a rack-mounted effects unit. But that's a whole new league.
I really like the overall sound quality, I just wish it had a harmonizer effect, and well, the bank down pedal really would be an essential addition.
I definitely recommend it. It's the best in its league.

This unit is fairly easy to use and follows Zoom's way of thinking.

Now, I'm not sure why they group DELAY with the modulation effects and ECHO with the Reverb, letting you have both on at the same time. They also group Standard CHORUS and DETUNE (light chorus effect) with the modulation effects, but put the stereo CHORUS with the reverb effects such that you can 2 choruses going at the same time. A little wacky, if you ask me.

And if they could have made the switch to manual mode a little easier on the fly... As is, you can either bend down and hit the manual button to disable/enable the 3 stomp pedals on the fly or program the experssion pedal to go into manual mode by depressing fully. Unfortunately, none of the ffects have the expression pedal set like that. They actually could have used another pedal to switch in an out of manual mode.

9. the phaser can be alittle whoosy when idle, otherwisae this pedal is quieter than the GFX-8 I used to own. The reason being is that this unit has a master volume knob to dial the preset down, so no matter what internal volume the preset is set to, it doesn't come through at that volume unless you want it to. This is in contrast to the GFX-8 that has no master volume knob.

I'm giving the pedal a "9" based primarily on the useful ness of the chorus, delay, and reverb effects. The OD tone is decent, too, but I'l probably use my tube amp for most of that.

Can't rate this yet, but having had the Zoom 505, 505-II, GFX707, and the GFX-8 and having never had a problem with anyone of them, I'm confident that the GFX-4 will hold up.

I play classic rock with a group of guys and this pedal will be good for that. We've yet to play out, but are working toweards that. I've been playing for almost 10 years and have owned alot of gear. Current gear inlcudes: Gibson Es-135 archtop, Sunn T50C + ext cab, Fender Acoustasonic JR, Fender GA45-SCE flattop, 1974 Fender Princeton Reverb, and an Epi Joe Pass jazz archtop.

I have owned every Zoom multi-FX pedal made over the last 5 years. I liked the GFX-8, but with it's lack of a master volume knob and Zoom having set every effect to maximum volume level, it was too noisy for me. I bought the GFX-4 to capture some of the GFX-8 tone, but control it more easily.

I really like the way the GFX-4 looks - it looks like a pro pedal with an easy to read lighted display (unlike the GFX707 which was impossible to read outdoors).

I wish the pedal had a few PCM rhythms built-in like the GFX707, but other than that it's fine.

Very intuitive and easy; much easier than gt6.

Not noisy, very good gate. I did an A/B test with a GT-6; in my view and to my ears, the gfx-4 sounds much much better, even when you tweak the GT-6; the distortions on the zoom are more analog sounding. More important, this unit souds larger and is more transparent then the boss. It does not detoriate your sound. Reminds me of the Voodoo Lab effects. Good reverbs, compression is smooth and usable, overdrive is excellent. The GT6 in comparison is more shrill and sounds digital , very bright with a Stratocaster. It is good for direct recording . The gfx-4 also has preamp modeling with choices of speakers, cabinet, type of amp. It sounds very good in a console, but of course never as good as a real tube amp. The Wah on the GFX-4 is not as warm as a Vox but it is very convenient. The unit is easy to carry and well thought.

Very good for light rock, oldies; the tremolo is just so warm; can play Buffula Springfield even better. Also good for Deep Purple, Hendrix. It is not really very suitable for Ultra Heavy stuff. Mind you, At 47 I am not as aggressive as I used to.

Had everything under control after playing around with it for a few minutes. The manual explains some things too complicated, though.

I'm currently using a lefthanded Fender Standard Strat and a Hughes & Kettner Edition Tube 20 watt amp. The guitar signal goes directly to the GFX-4 unit and enters the clean channel input. I bought the GFX-4 about ten months ago.

As always most of the factory presets are crap, so you have to tweak them or create your own. There are 60 slots available for saving your own patches (4 groups x 5 banks x 3 patches, which is plenty, but the 60 factory presets can't be overwritten). You can give names of up to six letters to each patch and adjust their volume levels seperately.

Amp Simulation: I only use this when practicing with headphones. It sounds too artificial through an amp or directly recorded. Four amps and five speaker cabinets can be selected and combined. The cabinet depth can also be set from 0 to 10.

Integrated Chromatic Tuner: No problems. The tuner is enabled when going into bypass or mute mode. The reference pitch is adjustable from 435 to 445.

Zoom Noise Reduction: Does its job fine, but a noise gate with more parameters would have been better (you can set it from 0 to 10).

Compressors: There are two compressors available. They're both very noisy when used with distortion, so I only use them on clean patches (on which I think they are necessary since the unit's clean sounds are somehow not that impressive).

Equalizer, overdrive/booster, auto wah, slow attack, chorus, vintage chorus, flange, tremolo, detune, vibrato, phaser, pedal wah and especially all of the reverb effects are very good and do what you expect them to.

The unit has digital delay but the maximum delay time is only 500 ms. There is also a sample and hold function of 2 seconds (Wow. Great. Do you know any 2 second riffs? Me neither. That explains why it's not advertised as a real feature of the unit and is only mentioned somewhere in the manual).

The pedal pitch effect and the pitch shifter are the worst effects on this board. It sounds just plain bad and digital (I must admit that when I sent a microphone into the guitar input, it was quite fun to mess around with the pitch shifter). One preset patch even suggests to use the pitch shifter set on -12 halftones as an octaver, which sounds very weak. They should rather have included a real octaver. The step and ring modulation effects aren't good either.

What the GFX-4 really excels at are the analog distortions. Most of them are suited for all kinds of rock and metal (dial in METALZ and start shredding), but you can also get some smoother distortion with the "overdrive" and "us blues" settings (although I would recommend using your amp's own distortion for that). The best one is clearly the EVHDRV distortion (which probably stands for Eddie Van Halen driver).

I tried the GFX-4 with four different amps of which two were solid state. In my experience, the sound with the tube amps is many times better, especially with smaller combos.

Aside from pedal wah and pedal pitch the onboard expression pedal can control distortion, volume, delay and reverb. It can also be used to control the main parameter of a modulation effect (e.g. adjust the Tremolo or Flanger rate) in real time.

Connections and controls at the back: an active/normal switch for active and passive pickups, guitar input, mono output, stereo/headphones output, master volume control, ac input with safety hook for cable, power on/off.

I wish the casing would be entirely made of metal, like the GFX-8 is. It looks a bit fragile to me. But since it has not given up on me yet, I would definetly gig with it. All buttons still work as they should, no wear, no tear (after ten months of constant use).

If it was lost or stolen and I had the money, I would probably buy a better unit (maybe the new GT from Boss, or one of these expensive G-Force rack thingies). But for the price, this is a very good multi effect. I definetly prefer it over the cheaper stuff from Zoom and I'm happy with it (even after ten months).

The range of sounds available means it can be a bit forbidding at first. I would advise spending a little while playing with it before gigging with it. Beware - if you edit patches while the amp sim is on and save, all the patches are saved on the sim setting. I was playing a gig and just couldn't figure what was going on - completely spoiled the sound. The expression set-up is a bit hard to understand - I use it mostly to add reverb to a sound. The reverb can be ferocious - use sparingly - it can make a solo really fill a hall though. Do not edit using headphones as the sound will be very different through your amp, but I suppose that is the case with all FXs. I previously used the Zoom 1010, which is a lot more fiddly to edit. The GFX is definitely superior.

I play a strat through a fender chorus amp, which has a terrible dirty channel.The GFX-4 helps me to get a good dirty sound and adds a bit of variety. I also use an Epiphone SG as a quick back-up for when I break strings ( which I do a lot). Make sure you have different patches for different guitars as the sound can change dramatically. Not too noisy in most patches. Some of the settings should be changed to give a decent sound, and some of the options are just too weird to bother with. Don't be tempted to throw in the kitchen sink and use all possible options at once - stick with one or two at a time.

No problems so far, apart from some surprises when using the expression pedal. I usually take my old Zoom 1010 with me when playing a gig, but only had major problems when I inadvertantly had saved everything on an amp sim setting.

I play rock covers mostly, and can get a good crunchy sound for the likes of 'Hard to Handle'. Haven't spent too much time playing with the echo, but what I have used is quite effective. I would consider getting another if lost, but would maybe check out competitors like Digitech, as some of the editing can be frustrating on this.

I have had this pedal for about 4-5 months and im pretty pleased. The editing patches are very easy to use and i can usually get the sound i want. The manuals pretty straight forward (easy to follow)

I can usually get the sound i want by messing w/ the tones. I like artists from Hendrix and SRV to Sublime and Rx Bandits. I really enjoy the strum effect,Texas,

I like to play alternative style to blues. I have been playing for 5 years. I own a Gibson ES120-T, Roadhouse Strat, and A fender mexican Strat. If my pedal was stolen or lost i would prob get a diff one that could bank down. Not being able to bank down is very irritating.

Ok this unit is very easy to use. I upgraded from a 707 and i didn't even need to read the manual. If you're used to multi effects, you'll be alright. If not read the manual which explains stuff reasonably well.

I use a heavily modified Yamaha Pacifica through the GFX-4 and into a Peavey Classic 50. the effects are very good. The CE chorus effect is very nice. the echo effect is also good. The distortions however are the strongest point. most of them are useable and sound very good.
The wah is probably the weakest effect. it works fine with a clean sound for funk, etc but through distortion it doesn't sound too good.

Seems well made, it's made from hard plastic with some metal parts. these don't appear to offer all that much more protection though. the pedals should be metal. it'll hold and i do gig without a backup however

My style ranges from acoustic rock to heavier alternative styles. The GFX-4 is the only multi effects i'd ever need. if i had to replace it i'd get a GFX-8 or a boss something. i compared it to a korg AX1000G, and the zoom sounded better in my opinion. The distortions and effects are very good, the wah is weak, but i don't need it. I've been playing for 6 years and i'm happy with my gear. while it has it's shortcomings, these are far outweighed by it's fantastic sound quality. A good product overall, and for the money you shouldnt be dissapointed.

I use a fender mustang running through a fender bassman 600 amp...It isn't noisy as long as the cable of guitar is clear...the effects sound great from blues to metal...you can have different types of distortion from creamy overdrive to hell blasting metal......I can get sounds from any artists from jimi hendrix to kirk hammet..as long as u set the proper tone for it..

I can depend on it as long as it depends on me....i can use it without back up in a gig..

The built in patches are, as usual from zoom, over done and not much use. Editing the patches however couldn't be easier, its got buttons to select things and knobs to change them. You can't get much simpler than that. If you are playing live and something has gone wrong with your presets or you're too drunk to remember them, you can just flick into manual mode and use it as three individual pedals. The manual is as always from Zoom, easy to understand and well laid out.

I use mine with a Laney pro-linebacker amp and a Washburn guitar and it sounds great. The pre-amp on this unit can create a severe buzz but the rest are fine. The stereo chorus is one of the best I've heard and the distortion is well toned and balanced with every parameter editable. The amp simulator is superb.

I would depend on this unit. Although I've only had it a few months I have had no problems. The construction is solid yet lightweight, the perfect gigging equation. I would gig without backup of the main unit but it has one of those pesky AC/DC adapters which is a very flimsy thing. Why can't Zoom put the adapter inside the unit with a plug in AC cable?

I've never had to deal with them but I've heard bad bad thing about them.

I play things with a sort of indie rock grungy metal sort of sound and it really is great for making that kind of noise. The only really bad point is the lack of a bank down pedal, this can be overcome with clever bank arranging though. I've not had it long but it quickly became an essential part of my musical setup.

Well, i sat down at the guitar store and played with this baby for about an hour before I decided to buy it. By the end of the hour I was pretty well adjusted to the way this pedal works. I previously had a Zoom 505 pedal, so I am quite familiar with editing patches and such on these Zoom units. If you're new to multi fx rigs, programming it may take a while to get used to, overall its a no brainer. Manual is pretty basic, but gives you the info you need if you have the time to actually look through it (31 pages)

I've only had it for a day or two, but so far it sounds great. I play a Fender telecaster with the GFX-4 through a Fender Deluxe 112 Plus. A lot of the default distortion programs are kinda noisy, but this can be fixed by playing around with the equalizer and compression settings. The other effects, pitch, wahs, delays etc sound great. I really like the expression pedal... it can let you add a nice twist to some of your sounds

well, zoom has always been known for making things out of plastic, but the undercasing of the unit is metal, with plastic covering, the whole unit is pretty light. I wouldn't want to drop it from too high, but I'm sure it would stand up to regular use. I've had my old Zoom 505 for about 4 years and its been dropped, kicked, thrown, etc, still works great.... so I suspect that the rest of Zooms products will handle the same way

I've dealt with customer support once or twice, usually through e-mail. I had a problem with a setting on my old Zoom 505 and e-mailed them about it, I got a response within a day or two.... not too bad I guess, i'm not sure if they have a 1-800 number, but overall I was happy with the responses I got

I've been experimenting a lot lately with my music and figured it was time for a new pedal with more features than my old 505. I play all types, except for country. Been playing for about 5 years. Other gear I own: Ibanez rg7 and ax7 guitars, Zoom 505 Guitar multi fx pedal, Ibanez Soundtank Tremolo, Dunlop Original Crybaby, Electric Mistress, etc. The gfx 4 definately helps me create music.

I find that the GFX-4 was fairly simple to use, ZNR Which actually stops unwanted noise is no good! Maybe its just my pedal, or maybe its just not that good of a feature to a truly amazing pedal! Editing the patches was very easy and I find the manual most useful, not that I or probably anyone else ever reads them properly, just get on with it!

I use the effects board with a Yamaha Pacifica and 100 watt custom amp, It is a little noisy as it lacks a proper noise gate! Some effects on the board are of poor quality, you should left them behind and stuck some more distortion ones in. The Pedal Pitch is an execelent effect I love it, I have been working on my Rage Against The Machine Guitar, I can get most of the sounds I want but my taste in music varies from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Green Day and Metallica.

Simply because i have only had it a few days, I have a gig coming up next week and I am think of leaving the GFX-4 at home cause I am not fully used to it! I think the foot switches could be a little sturdier as I dont want to tap down to hard and snap it off

I would consider an upgrade yes definately, I have a DOD tec 4, and its seriously out of date!

I play all styles of music, mostly punk and funk. this is amazing for making a good funk riff sound even better, there are so many effects you can add. I have been playing for 4 years and I have all sorts of guitars pedals and amps. If i lost it, God damn I would find it! if it was stolen i would buy a GFX-8, I love the look of the GFX-4 its very professional and its hard to compare to other products. I wish it had a good noise gate! I can make some seriously good music with this baby, I feel some excelent riffs coming up! I would like to say that Zoom have come up with a half decent pedal, Cheers!

Not the easiest unit to program, but ok once you get the hang of it.
Biggest drawback in usage in the inability to bank down. Serious flaw.

Warm and fuzzy. By far the best sounding unit in the price class and I have played almost ALL of them.. 2 Digitechs, DOD, Boss, Everything from a Big Muff sound that is better than the real thing, to clean chorus, to crunch. Vibrato, trembolo, chorus, reverb, delay, auto wah, overdrives and distortions and wah all sound great. Very non digital. Use with Musicman 110 RD 50 and 112 RD 50 and Strat 40th anniversery. Some noise on high gain settings, some hiss thru the amp, I run it thru an old BOSS me-6 to bring the outout down before it hits the amp as I have no effects loops. Sounds great, no loss of tone or dynamics anywhere.

Seems sturdy. Havent gigged with it yet , but will soon. No worries mate.

I've played for over 20 years. Play live 4-6 times a month, originals and very working Grateful Dead/ San Fran cover band, and this is what I need to travel lite and sound great.

Easy I'd say, once you've fiddled with it for a while to find out what everything does, you don't really need the manual.

I am using a BC Rich Mockingbird with twin humbuckers into a Peavey Studio Pro 112. The sou d is usually terrible but with this unit it sounds quite good. The reverb and delays on some patches are gorgeous. The drive sounds are much improved over the earlier zooms, some of them are really nice (eg. EVH Drive).
Some sounds are just useless though and could never actually be used in music. (at least not with my ability, but maybe other people could find something to do with them).

Hmm... haven't had it long so couldn't really say. It's lightweight but it seems really well built, but I'd never use anything without a backup, no matter how good it is.

Pathetic, hopefully they will improve on this soon but for now it is virtually non-existant.

I play a wide reange of styles from blues to metal, this unit is very versatlie. It has good preset patches and the user definable ones are eassy to get good sounds for virtually anything out of. Only thig is, not being expensive, you still get what you pay for. Value for money wise it is great, but you might be better off spending a little extra for a Digitech RP-2000 or Boss GT-3.

so.. i have a ibanez rg570 guitar and a create gx-212 amp.... and i like to play metal so... my instruments(amp, guitar and zoom gx4)....sounds very well together.

Idiot proof is the best way to describe it. Everything is set out in a nice logical pattern for you. I had every function under contrtol within 10mins of buying, without using the manual.

Some of the distortion patches are excellent, perfect for alternative and heavy rock, with some nice british style rock tones. I found it much harder to get smooth blues tones and what I generally came up with wasnt worth the effort compared to just setting up the amp right. Chorus and delay effects are both lush and highly usable, the best Ive heard on a unit in this price range. The amp sim is highly usable and gives good, but not great tones straight to tape.

Reliablity should be fine but some of the construction feels a bit flimsy. The pedals are a bit light weight weight for my liking and Im worried they wont take much abuse from my size 12s but I'll see.

Lack of email facilities and online support at the moment, but that should hopefully change soon knowing ZOOM so I'll give my rating as a potential.

For most of the music Im liable to play with the unit it always verges on being excellentbut never quite attains it. My personal tone preferences are clean delays, chorus's and big muff style distortions, akin to the Smashing Pumpkins and the unit gives a credible performance with my equipment (Custom Fender Strat with humbucker, Gibson Les Paul Standard and vintage Burns Vibraslim). However I do wish it was possible to combine more of the effects for sonic terrorism rather than just having access to seven banks (before amp sim asnd noise reduction). However, I compared the unit to Korgs 1000AX-G and Line-6 POD and found the unit delivering considerably better tones than the Korg and my pewrsonal favourite JCM800 style grunge tones just as well as the POD. However the unit is not as great for direct recording as the POD but then again, thats not what the unit is intended for.

Operation is dead easy. Even a kid could operate it. The manual is nothing special. It has the well-known Zoom standard and explains all the important stuff. No problem's here.

I'm using a USA Fender Strat with DiMarzio's Super Distortion and PAF humbuckers directly into the unit and to a Marshall Valvestate 265 or headphones. The sound is good. Not noisy if you are using the noise gate. The effects are all in the standard GFX-8 quality. Although I must admit that I like the Reverbs better on the GFX-4. The clean sound on the GFX-8 is better but the Distortion of the GFX-4 tops the GFX-8. It's tailored to my kind of music (Iron Maiden). But go check it out at a local dealer for yourself. I'd say, the sound quality is very good but not perfect. But than again, what IS perfect?

It's a very good unit for Rock and Heavy stuff. Definately better than the GFX-8. That's why I traded it. I don't like the fact that you can only switch banks in one direction. For live, it's a bit disturbing. This was better on the GFX-8. But overall, I'd say it's a good unit which doesn't follow the standard of trying to duplicate amp models. It's more like a distortion-modelling-processor. I say: Thumbs-up!
