Preset patches give you pleanty of different sounds to play with straight away.
A quick flick through the manual allows you to easily fine tune a patch to add a bit more gain, reverb, volume etc then easily set it back to default when you decide you like the original sound better but can't work out what the settings were.
The manual is quite good for this product.

Compared to todays multi effects units or a single effect stomp box, the sounds arn't that great.
Bought this new in 2001 and used this with a crappy strat copy and crappy sounding 10W practice amp.
I went from having the option of a terrible clean sound or a terrible distorted sound from the guitar/amp combination to having access to many great new sounds that actually made my guitar/amp sound quite decent with this unit.It made playing a lot more fun because you could scroll through the pre-sets.... hey, that sounds like ACDC, that one sounds like GNR, that sounds like this song or that song ..etc. So this unit is great for that purpose.
8 years later and using this unit with either a fender strat or a les paul going through a fender amp or valve jr this is still fun to use if you need a particular sound quickly. I only use about 5 of the patches regularly though. They don't sound fantastic but they are definately usable for practicing with or working out what type of effects you like so you can go and buy a proper effect pedal.
By comparison, my cheap danelectro FAB chorus pedal sounds fantastic compared to the chorus in the ZOOM and my TS808 makes the overdrive/distortion from the ZOOM sound absolutely dreadfull.
I would have rated the sound much higher 5 years ago but if I had only recently bought this unit I would rate it much much lower so I will compromise on this score.

After about 5 hours use the solder from the input jack terminal broke free so I had to repair it. It has lasted 8 years since that repair with no other faults.
I would never gig with this because I don't think it was ever designed for that. Its more of a bedroom, garage jam session toy. Also it doesn't seem sturdy enough and although the battery's last a while, there is an annoying hum every time the display flashes a low battery warning.

I've been playing for 15 years and currently play seagull accoustic, fender strat, epiphone les paul gold top and a few other lesser known guitars.
I use a fender FM65 for my clean amp sounds and an epiphone valve jr for my crunch/overdrive sounds.
The pedals I use are danelectro compressor, FAB chorus and a TS808.
If I feel like replicating the sound a particular song for fun while I'm learing it then I'll use the ZOOM GFX-707 because it is great for that.
Once you get over that fact that no matter how long you spend altering the patches its never going to sound as good as you'd like and just plug the thing in and enjoy the types of sounds rather than the quality of the sounds then it can be usefull.
I'd never sell/swap or give this unit away but If it broke on me I wouldn't bother getting another one unless it was cheaper than a couple of beers.
In its day I think it was fairly decent but it really is nothing flash now.(2009)

I've had this effect for about 3-4 years, and it was pretty easy to learn how to use it right from the beginning.
The manual was great, because unlike many other "things", it had a manual in my own language, which is always a good thing.

I'm using Jackson guitar and Laney amp. I like the distortion sounds, and flanger & chorus + delays & echoes. Wah is not really good because of its weakness I also find some effects kinda...well they're fun to play with, but other than that they're useless (t-trip, ring-m).
It's pretty easy to make it sound like GnR, Metallica (both clean and heavy sound), and stuff like that.

Seems that I'm not the only on with the jack problem. I've been fixing myself both input and output...The good thing is, that those are easy to fix yourself.

I play mostly heavy metal and rock, and it's very good for that. But I also do all kinds of weird stuff, which has a lot of delays and flangers and chorus', and this is really good for that. I've been playing around 20 years, I would try to buy a new one exactly like this if it got stolen.
The worst thing in it is probably that it has too many presets, and not enough room for user settings.

I bought this 4 years ago from a friend. I had no manual, and so I had to learn how to fine tweak on the fly - IF YOU TAKE TIME, IT WILL WORK FINE. Once I figured how the patches work, it was really nice sounding. I downloaded the manual last summer. I pretty much knew almost all the features.

My style is Foo Fighters, Tragically Hip, any rock/alternative. I can get that Green Day punk sound easy. The delay is great, but a couple of overdrive settings don't sound quite as good on my Seymour Duncan Invader pickup as a regular single coil. My amp is a Rolland RG200 tube amp, and this amp has made this sound even better than my little Peavey! I was going to buy a POD2.0, but my new tube amp took care of my sound. The only thing I don't like about the lack of a normal chord - I have to used batteries or a special adapter chord.

I have had the same problem everyone has with this pedal - the input jacks in the back have been repaired at least 2-3 times. I have been worried a couple of times that I killed it again. You have to be really careful on stage. This thing should be made of metal. I would suggest a backup.

I play Hard Rock/Alternative, this suits me just fine. I love the amp sims - COMBO A is the one I use for everything. Understand that if you have the right guitar & amp, this pedal will do what you need it to. Anyone out there who doesn't take time to adjust, tweak, and learn how to get a good sound has no patience and is wasting their money even if it is a cheap pedal. The friend I bought this pedal from, went out and tried every thing with his Strat and tube Crate amp - he came home with another GFX 707!! Not everyone has a story like that. I like this one for now; I just treat it like glass.

The zoom delay,room,echo,reverb is in a word..Exelent.
Dist,fuzz,metal,etc., isn`t that good. It`s too...transistory?
There`s this buzz that comes with every single
dist effect onboard this efect.I`m using a tube preamp with this fx and it mellows that buzz.
Chorus,flange,ring mod,12string,etc, are good.
some are mediocre at best.
I put much effort and time in setting up my patches just right and I got some more that descent sounds outta this fx. There`s also a variety of patches online so you can get some good OD sounds as well.
Can`t get a good wah out of it.
It has a ton of sounds to pick from, but doesn`t allow you to put more than 9 in a row. that kinda sux.
The sound also changes drastically when you are using different types of amps.On some the sound can be GODlike+ and on others just Cwap,no matter what you do.
I`ve had this effect for number of years and I am greatlly satisfied with it as an practice fx and would also use it in a gig but there`s so many issues with it reliabillity which brings me to the next subject.

Have backup with this one. I use it mostlly as a practise fx and would use it in a gig, but never ever without backup. Had to resolder input/output jacks 3-5 times each (*+&%#$#"!&%) I had to clean up the expression switch too, so I can`t say that this is a reliable device.

I love it`s portabillity,It`s light and mostlly veryvery usefull..You can get a good sound outta it even with the cheapest cwap
ass equipment and that is a exellent feature when practising.
I HATE those F..ing input`output jacks. I have tryed korg and digitech and also boss as reference when I was looking for amy first fx and i decided on zoom because it was cheap(didn`t had much money then)and got more features then the others(overpriced)multiefects.
I have never regreted buying it.It`s a user friendlly an overall a good product which fits most guitarists.

This is easy to use once you have a read of the manual and make sure you're getting the most out of it. The expression pedal is very sensitive which can be tricky, and pressing both footswitched for the tuner can be difficult too, but no big deal.

Firstly don't use the distortion/overdrive/fuzz, they're awful. Use the OD on your amp or (like me) a good OD pedal before the 707.
Secondly, the presets are dreadful. Have a flick through to see if any take your fancy and save them at the beginning of the patches. What I've done is create my own patches with just one type of effect, so if you flick through my patchs you'll see - 'CHORUS', 'DELAY', 'FLANG', 'CRYBAB', 'COMP', 'PHASE' etc. I basically use this alongside my Boss Overdrive, Compression and Reverb pedals, so it just puts the extra, less-used effects, like Chrous, Flange, Phaser (which generally sound nice on the 707) in one box.

After 6 years of occasional use the input jack started becoming loose so I opened her up and resoldered it to the circuit board and it's fine now. It's fine for gigs though you have to be careful with it. It comes in very handy when there's no amp at a venue as you can DI it and stick amp simulation on.

Not as good as a load of Boss compact pedals but I use my 707 alongside Boss OD-3, RV-5 and CS-3 and like I said it puts the less-used effects into one box meaning I don't need a huge pedal-board (in fact I don't use pedal boards at all).
The sampling feature is cool (the 'jam' feature is useless) and the rhythm feature can be handy when wanting to hear a lick with drums.
Considering the price tag and weight this is a good product, sure there are better pedals out there but for those who have to carry their gear everywhere and don't have a lot of spare cash this is your pedal.

I use this mixed about 40% into my signal using a boss ls-2. I play bass and guitar through the same bass amp with guitar amp running a high pass. This pedal sounds amazing! I only use my own patches, and bought it for effects more than tone, I got both! It is a bit noisy in my opinion, but I don't really mind, especially considering the price and tone of the thing! The reverbs and delays are great, very clean and pristine. The modulations effects are good. They're not vintage analog tone, but that's not what I need. The distortions are maleable, in that if you take your time, you'll get the sound you're after. That's true for the whole of this pedal. If you put the effort in, you'll find your sound.

This is not the most reliable pedal. I have mended not only mine, but around 3 other people's 707s. The in/out jack sockets and DC input come loose very easily. I removed them from the board, and attatched them with wires insteas - no more problems.
The footswitches are crap. I have drilled through the plastic footswitches and added metal proper "stomp" switches instead.

I play 6 string bass in a band, and my main bass sound comes from using this pedal, mixed with a compressed clean sound. I use the same distortion patch I made years ago with the expression pedal controlling gain, going from almost clean bluesy grit, to full on heavy fuzz. I added two extra footswitches to go up and down 6 (i'm not sure how many, the footswitches are the same as the bank buttons) patches. Now I have the distortion patch copied to every 6 patches (or however many) and then other effects I use 1 either side of the distortion. This is much better than the standard way of going 1 up and 1 down with the standard footswitches.
The expression pedal on this thing is so useful! You can assign it to control anything!
It sounds great in my set-up. We recently started our album ( myspace.com/nologorock) and this big shot producer whinced when he saw the Zoom lable on my board. He was in the process of asking me to take it off when I blew him away with the tone inspired and created with this pedal (and a few compressors, E.Q, loud bass amp bi-amp rig).
My board is massive (I gig with 15 or 16), and to replace this pedal with something more reliable would cost me another 6 pedals. To say the least, I rate this pedal "10 - Fantastic value".

You can get some pretty good sounds right out of the box. Modifying the sound is as easy as turning knobs. With manual in hand, it's pretty easy to edit and store your own patches (a few patch sites are on line). The display is a killer to see in the sunlight. If you loose you place in the patches, you'll have to turn it off and back on again to reset, and bring along another turner.

I've been playing for 20 years. Have a Fender Strat, Gibson Les Paul and Peavey 112 Bandit and a Crate amp. It mostly depends on your style as far as sound goes. Some of the patches with heavy chours and compression sound a little muddy when the volume is turned up.

Bad. I've owned 2 of these pedals and both have shorted out at the input and output jacks. I re-soldered them and repaired them and it wasn't long before they shorted out again. I had epoxied the jacks and power input to the plastic casing to make them more sturdy. It didn't help. They are useless now. I bought a 707II. It is starting to have problem with the input jack. I have to bend the cable under the unit to keep a connection. Regardless, I must use it unstead of the Boss because of the sound. I have ordered a Zoom G2.

Because of imput and output jack problems, I bought a Boss ME-8 to get away from Zoom and to try something different. The Boss distotions sounded too "tinny". I couldn't get the Boss distortions to mellow down, even after tinkering with them, taking some highs off and adding some bass and such. The Boss does have a better pitch shifter and harmonizer. When I took it to practice with the band, they were like, "Man, what's happened to your good distortion sound?" You have a way better chance getting a Stevie Ray Vaughn sound out of the Zoom than the Boss (Stevie used Ibanez). I've gotten a better crunchy thump like Def Leppard and Van Halen from the Zoom than from the Boss. I've listened to samples from the Boss ME-50 and it's the same ME-8 sound. Haven't tried any other brands but I'm going back to Zoom.

Got given this for a Bday present, and in my opnion there is no quality in any of the effects, apart from a couple of the chorusy ones. the distortions/overdrives are all utter crap, they sound like flies in a bottle.
I was running my Maton Mastersound 500 into this pile of snot then into a marshall AVT100. It's also very noisy.
The amp models are all crap and hence I never once used any of them. You couldn't even front end your amp with this, as it just becomes white noise. The adjustable pedal has no range what so ever, hence the wah patch is pretty useless.
I have since reverted back to the trusty old stomp boxes (Boss MT2, DD3, BF2 and ibanez DSC10 and TS9).

I have a les paul custom going through a crate rfx120 combo amp and the pedal is awesome! Some of the stock patches arent very great cept for the van halen one and some others. All you need to do is tweak it to your liking. Once you learn how to make your own it really sounds awesome. The effects are great. Its like you have the evh phase 90 pedal in their, youve got whammy bar dive bombs, steve vai bad horsie wah, and alot of crazy sounds. I love the amp sims my favorite one is the combo A, great tone. When you have it on the right distortion it sounds great. I mean maybe some of the other distortions may suck but who cares, this pedal has a hell lot of potential, and you can get the sound you want. Ppl keep complaining about the distortion who cares if the others arent good, you have an awesome sounding one. They all sound to awesome to me by the way. I use this with a Parker Nitefly M, occainsonally an Ibanez S series into a pretty decent Solidstate amp. The sound, no matter how hard I try, is terrible. Most effects are too grating when turned up loud, and to rectify this, you have to take almost all of the actual tone out of it. I've found it's not very compatable with my amp either. The tones sound very digital.
It's not very noisy, and when it is, it isn't a big deal. But the distortions are all USELESS; the chorus sound is too blotchy and not transparent enough; the delay can be decent, but you really have to mess with it, and it's hard to get the sound right; the wah function sounds terrible; and the acoustic simulator is very bad; the compression is hard on the ears and not authentic at all.
There are two effects I've found that I really like, and it's the only reason I even use it anymore: After hours of headaches and scrutnizing, I created a good light chorus-y type sound, and also the Flange patch is extremely good. I've yet to successfully be able to mix this pedal with any other effects or the amp distortion, which makes its usefulness go down quite a bit. You can't make a really mild sound with it, so it overrides everything and takes away the tone of your guitar.

It's as sturdy as a grain of rice. I've had to open it up and solder the input/output jacks at least 4 times each, and the A/C power input is dying out so that it turns off and then back on when you press one of the buttons a little too hard. All this from normal use, no abuse. I've used it at gigs without a backup, and it turned out alright, but that was probably just pure luck. It's not very reliable at all.

I play a variety of styles, mostly alternative or progressive rock, and some experimental stuff. This pedal basically does nothing for me, except for a few effects, which makes it alright. But I could get single pedals for a flange and chorus for the price of this one pedal, and they'd sound better than this.
This thing rightfully caught my eye as a beginner guitarist, and I don't regret buying it because of all the joy it gave me in some long-distant time. But I recommend you avoid it if you have the money to get something else. I recommend single pedals unless you're going to get a really really high-end multi-effects unit. Also, the 707II has several updates (longer recording/sampling capabilities, eaiser access, some better sounds), so if you want one of these, get the 707II.

I bought it first time in year 1999, I can hardly appreciate its reliability. Power and input/output jack iron is not stable so it dumbed too often after a period time of using, you have to replace it. And plastic shell makes it so light that you need to be careful not to kick it into off-stage's audiences' heads.I really think 707 is a good mate for accompanying your song writing or jamming sessions, cos it gives u a good numbers of drum patterns and 6 seconds' sample/loop function, you can have lots of fun and inspirations out of using it.

I am playing mostly on New Skull punk and pop punk, since 1995. I dun reckon it matches this style really well,I tried but haven't suceeded to get a really nice new skull sound yet, but for practicing, Lead distortion with proper delay is really nice. I owned Digitech DigiVerb(Reverb),Behringer's GDI21 and other two cheap-bargain pedals which are flanger and overdrive, last night I tried connecting my 707 with my GDI21 (only using 707's effects in this case),it is working better than using 707's own distortion. I would like2get something else even it will be like 707II:) I really like features provided by 707 such like drum patterns and sample, it makes my song writting so hand-on and ready-to-go as soon as it is plugged. If u compare with GNX3 from Digitech,it also provides drum patterns but it only has 30 types altogether, for which GFX 707 has 45 in contrast, and GNX3 provides 9 seconds' sample as 707's 6 seconds' one,but considering the price of GNX3 is over thrice. If 707 had a editable drum machine will be nicer:)
For summary,I think ZOOM 707 is good for price and value(even people in post-communism country can afford it),without considering the sounds, its functions are still powerful in terms of song writings and practicing. Not reckon for stage performance since its bit-poor reliability.

It's pretty easy to operate, but it does take awhile. The manual is alright but nothing substitutes just using it. You could change stuff on the flight at a gig if you were versed enough in it. Tuner is good, bypass isn't too tone-sucking. EXP pedal is not so great.

It's not noisy (singles and HB). A LOT of the distortions suck. They are just too harsh. But some are great. There is a nice lead one, it'd be good for metal or for light od. But not for middle-of-the-road hard rock/distortion. It gets harsh in that area.
The flange is strong but I like it, the chorus is also good, delays and reverbs are ok as are most other effects. EQ is alright, and the phaser pretty much blows. It's gig-worthy, but not if it's your only pedal.
The wah is brutal. DON'T USE THE WAH haha.

I use Jackson and Fender Stratocaster guitars , with Marshal amplifiers , first of all this product just catched my eyes while I was a beginner , but after 6 months I caught the sound very very digital , computerised and unreal . That was just synth that I heard! Worse , the distortion effects really sound noisy that sometimes you can't hear the melody or specially the rythm that you are playing , awful . This effect reduces the power of volume of what you play and it doesn't matter which amp you are using , as I tried on VOX amps and Mesa Boogie amps , I sound the same unreal thing . It is a cheap thing that you can buy , but I usually don't recommend this multi-effect procesor to beginners , even!

I play adult alternative rock , and GFX 707 is not a good match for anyone . I have benn playing guitar for 8 years and I preffer Digitech multieffect processores , though , I prefer singleffect processors to multieffect processors but If your budget is low , go and buy a BOSS or Digitech multieffect processor. I won't buy it again , even if it is lost , but you know , somehow it is good for the breaks and intros and when you want to make some synth-like sound.

For me it is enough to create a nice good sound with my guitar kit which consists of a black signature guitar and a stranger 40 watt amp and ofcourse my Zoom707. Well all the patches are not of any use for me(I don't mean that they are bad)as i use self created patches in my programs. It sounds great for me but some patches specially with acoustic stimulator makes a hissing sound when played which really makes me mad sometimes but overall it is good

The foot-paddle is what i like the most in this Zoom707. I had compared it with many other guitar effects but found that Zoom 707 is small and great in sound and cheap as compared to other bulky and costly gears. To be frank Zoom707(II) is a upgraded version but is of no match to Zoom707(this is what i think). The only thing i wished it had is a Control paddle for the rhythem.

I'm using a Tanglewood Corsa strat shape thing, and whatever amp I can borrow at the time. I've never known a multi-effects to be so 50/50. Half of the distortions suck (metal/distortion/fuzz), the other half are very nice (wildfuzz/power/overdrive). Some of the compressions settings suck, but the amp sims are good. The noise reduction is superb, the flanger sucks. The autowah is superb, the pitch shifter sucks. The whole pedal has good and bad sides to it, and after five years im still finding nice tones.

Ican't believe some of the reviews on this product. I just use mine for jamming, I have a huge pedalboard stuffed with some boutique, and a few Boss pedals which weighs a ton, so i use this for jamming with buddies, or small venues. This unit has the best overdrives I have ever heard in a processor. They're very usable, and sound great if you tweak them. I think some reviewers are judging this box on the presets whic are not great, but that's always the case, presets suck in just about every multieffect unis. That said, this pedal also has some amazing Distortion and Fuzz sounds which really cut through without ever sounding harsh, you just have to tweak a little, and with all analog knobs, this is a very easy unit to tweak.
Here's the fun stuff: all of the modulation (Phase, Flange, Chorus, Etc.) sound great, not wimpy. I think the Modulation effects in the 707 sound much better than their equivalent Boss stompboxes, they just have more personality. The Delays, and Reverbs are awesome, never poppy or harsh sounding. Also, this unit has some whacked out Zoom-only effects such as Step, Pedal Pitch Shifter,Ring Modulator, Time Trip and Ring-Vibrato which are very cool, and useful if you're into trippy experimental stuff.

I have always loved Zoom's effects, their units are always better-sounding than the Boss processors which always sound lifeless in comparison to me. The Zoom 707 is a 2 thumbs up effect in every aspect!

Pretty straightforward, I guess....built to last 2 years before falling out of the skies, kind of a Virgin Airlines 707. They now have a 707 2 that is the same garbage box, different name. Hell, if you crashed in a 707, would you go out and enter a 747 in the same airline? Of course not, you would either be crazy or dead! SO DONT BUY ONE! (Hope Zoom reads this. I want my money back.)

Why would anyone in their right mind buy the 707 "2" after reading all the bad press about the original 707 (which I have). Since they are essentially the same unit, I can only say that after 2 years (sound familiar?) mine quit, only the input jack (jackoff) is not repairable as far as I can see with the back off (backoff). Very dissapointed indeed, no abuse, it just stops working, sort of like a windup pillsbury doughboy...looks cute, sounds great, not a marathon finisher. The balls of the company to make a new one as if it were some kind of technological improvement development issue. They just dont pony up to take responsibility for bad products and cheap plastic input jacks better suited for battery operated sex toys. Why not just make better 707s and offer to fix all the broken ones out there? And to top it off, SAM TRASH cant even fix this piece of garbage...but they will sell me a new 707 2!!! They suffer from flea market corporation confusion.

I am planning on using the (original) GFX707 live. I have several other units, Zoom 505-II and Digitech GNX3 that I have used up until now.
The 505-II just doesn't sound good with a flattop/piezo. The GNX3 is big, heavy, and expensive - I've left it home in recent months, though I can not argue with the sounds I get from it with an electric or a flattop guitar.
The GFX707 is something I put away in deference to newer pedals, since which time I have owned, used, and/or sold Zoom's 505-II, GFX-4 and GFX-8 as well as several other maker's pedals.
Now, I'm pulling it back out of mothballs since it is portable, lightweight, runs on batteries or a 9V adapter, and gives up equally good cleans and overdrive sounds.
The cleans are a little better than the Zoom 505-II and the overdrives are at least as good *and* the GFX707 sounds good with my Ovation flattop - something the 505-II didn't do well.

Quite easy to use, the users manual is pretty clear and you can manage to get good effects very quickly. The sampling feature is well easy to use too, negative point: can only sample 6 seconds max, a tiny bit too short, feature updated on the GFX707-II, as the length of the jam along sample feature is now defined by a memory card, that you can change. The rythmn feature is quite easy to use and very useful as we don't always play in a band, and therefore, it is quite convinient to practice on one's own.

Alright, here comes the dark bit... How to be accurate and gentle to that pedal at the same time...? I play on a Washburn WI-66 pro with Seymour Duncan pickups and a Fender Strat, played through a Marshall MG100DFX with a 4x12 extension cab. When the GFX-707 is not part of the line-up, the sound is AWESOME !!! BUT... when you add the GFX-707 in, the sound is really bad... To begin with, as soon as you use any kind of distortion, the sound is crap. The Metal distortion is terrible, all you can hear is a noise, very low, and while listening to it, or at least bearing it, you actually forget that you are playing guitar because your guitar is the only thing you can't hear in that fuzzy shitty noise. The overdrive is either too wick or too strong, you can't get a warm bluesy sound, which is really annoying. It sounds like you're playing with a loose lead, which is not really the kinda thing you want... unless you play some kind of experimental music. However, when you use the pedal without any distortion and just effects such as chorus, delay, it is pretty good, sharp and clear.. It suffers from the lack of settings though.. You can't really customize the delay for example. There are proper weird effects, which sound briliant, very conceptual, such as "drill" or "talk". The possibilty of assigning diferent functions to the expression pedal is quite cool.
As a conclusion i would say this pedal is not a big deal for friends of metal, rock or blues.
Reliability
:

As most of reviewers underlined it, it is just a plastic box, I would be surprised whether it could survive if someone stepped on it... However, I used it in gigs, it was treated badly, and it's still alive. The expression pedal is solidly anchored in the basis, and is not loose at all, even if it has been stepped on a coupla times. Still a plastic box...

I played every kind of music, and as I just said, when you want it loud with a fat overdrive or distortion of any kind, well, don't play through this pedal. It's not worth it, you'll be disapointed. When you want something clear, with mental effects, then go for it.
Would not buy it again to be honest, I was really happy with it when I first got it, but it was probably a beginner's enthusiasm. Now, I own a digitech RP300, and God, it rocks!
The only reason why I use it now is the built-in rythmn machine, as I can practice on my own, waiting for the next band practice.

Rudimentary tweaking skills will make it easy to find your tones once you've had a few minutes practice. Straight forward Matrix type layout with (generally) 3 variable parametres controlled by the 3 white knobs. Or alternatley, tweak main effects (dist/mod/reverb/master) on the fly with the rotary knobs any time! Too easy!

Used this out the front of a silverface twin for a few years. Later in the loop of a Fender stage 160 and again in the loop of a mesa nomad 100. With both Humbucking and single coil equipped guitars. Many effects here the best of which are chorus and reverbs and I think the "lead" distortion should earn a special mention because although its a little..err..."processed" sounding for some reason I like the damn thing! As for other distortion/modulation effects...most sound pretty cheap and cheesy. I guess you get what you pay for. I wouldnt mind using this just for the chorus or reverb but the damn thing does not have a true bypass. This means that when it's in "bypass" mode, its still actually sucking my tone away! Not good! A great buy for the beginning guitarist without an amp/money for separate boxes but not really for anyone searching for good tone!

I encountered the same problem another guy described below where I was getting this crackling from the input jack. At first I thought it was leads/the jack but after opening it up I found that the 3 pins soldered to the board had basically become cracked all around in such a way to force an unreliable connection. No worries - 10 minutes and a bit of solder later she was as good as new. While the problem was pretty minor it was still a bit of a piss off. Cheap cheap cheap.

This pedal is as versatile as you like! You will find editing patches really easy if you are familiar with Zoom units, and although this is my first, I find the setup really easy to use. The swell pedal is great too, and I actually find it easier to use during play than most Morleys I've tried. I use mine to emulate as close as possible the tone of Hank Marvin (I'm saving up for a dedicated echo unit even as I write this!), and some echo settings of his too. The tone I get through my Fender Deluxe 90 amp is nigh on as close as you can get without paying the earth on Meazzi effects units and Vox AC30s. When I use other effects, the sound stays the same quality, and the versatility really comes through. The manual is straight forward (if you dont find this to be the case you need help), and once you can change patches you can just about do it all.
Sound Quality
:

I use my 707 with a Hank Marvin Signature Fender Strat and a Fender Deluxe 90, and you can't really fault the sound, as long as your amp is off the floor, on a table o5r stand etc. Vibration then kicks in on some notes and it all gets very ugly! It's not really noisy but you may get some odd sound changes if you put the Zoom Noise Reduction up much higher than 3. There is one chorus sound that is totall gorgeous, (called "L-LEAD") and when playing atmospheric stuf this really comes into its own. The Hank sounds that I get (as I said) are pretty surprising too.

I something happened to my 707 I would immediateley but another, but probably the 707 II, simply to get a newer model (sad innit?!). The only thing I will say is that it is generalised, and so the echo effecs that I want for a good Marvin sound have to be provided by another echo unit. Overall, I highly reccommend this effects unit, and it is great as a first (as mine was for me). I would definitely go for Zoom again, probably rack mounts, ut that's beside the point. This little box is wonderful to use, has great sounds and I love t. Nuff said!!

Quite an awkward pedal, and no matter what combination of patches used it still sounds awful. I suppose it's good for a beginer who wants to start dabbling with guitar effects.
Sound Quality

This will make your guitar sound like a cheap piece of plastic. Over prossesed, scratchy, fake. Tried through transistor and valve amps - will seriously destroy even the best valve tones. It basically seems to take the sound of the guitar, strip it down to a horrible thin tone, then prosses this with various artificial patches. No true bypass, which means in bypass mode, you only have the thin stripped down guitar tone. Your better off saving up for a half decent valve amp with one or two good stomp boxes or effect units that you will actually use, rather than 50+(?) unusable effects. I was bought one for roughly #100 about 5 years ago; there's around 50 or so sounds on there I think, so that's about #2.00 per effect. You get what you pay for.

If I lost one of these I wouldn't be too heart broken. Hate these things, the best thing about it was the box it came in could fit A4 paper folded in half perfectly. Got the pedal when I was a beginer; it seemed pretty cool to a 13 year old. Wouldn't recomend it to anyone to gig or record with.

I love this sound combined with the expression peddle. It really kicks ass because you can sweep to any level of Distortion in real time with your foot. With the Comp/Crunch tone you get chimey clean all the way up to insane crunch. But the compressor kicks in when the gain gets to high and you lose some volume. not a huge problem though. More on the tones later in my summary.
I give big points to Zoom for making a unit that preserves the natural sound of your guitar. What i mean is this: you can plug in a strat and a les paul. They will both sound different as they are supposed to. Big plus when compared to other digital FX gear.

I have had this unit for 5 years now and i am still i love with it. I wish there were more units like this that had it's flexibility. It has every effect that you can think of, with infinate adjustablity, and real time control with the expression pedal. I found the effects to be very versatile themselves. The phaser for example has 4/5 different types that you can pick from. The tremolo is setup so you can control the shape, rate and depth...just like a real trem box. this thing has a Harmonizer and a half decent pitch shifter (whammy effect) as well. The wah is a little hot when it is slammed down, but it is cool that you can set before or after the pre-amp. You can go from Kirk Hammett wah to Porn theme wah. The overused effect is Delay. Zoom has always made good delays and this one is great. i just hate how it is on the same bus as some other useful effects...but there is a seperate delay in the reverb bus...that doesn't have as many parameter options, but it works good.
Now...after 5 years what do i do with my GFX? When i started out I had a very simple setup. GFX - Amp. That's it. I got a Cry Baby to replace the wah on the GFX. It worked great when plugged in before the GFX. I borrow a Line POD from the lead singer in my band, and i discovered that the POD sucks for FX but kicks ass on Tones! So...my signal path is POD - Cry Baby - GFX - AMP. Here's another advantage of the GFX over the POD...a bypass option. If you want to turn off the tone bus and use it as a multi-tasking stomp box collection...go for it! I use the POD for my tones (switchable with an optional FB4 accessory), my cry baby for that extra solo punch, and the GFX for my whammy pedal, digital delay, reverb unit, tremolo, flange, phase, talk box, vibrato, ring modulator, and chorus. And it sounds amazing.
If you are wondering about amps, just keep in mind that Line 6 amps suck with this thing. Why? You are plugging in the wrong side of the pre-amp, and most (if not all) don't have an FX loop. Blech!
But i have played this with a 30 watt practise amp, a 240 watt stack, a 100 watt Crate, and many large miscellaneous mongrels at live shows. It sounded great all the way.
So there you go.

Straight out of the box this is a simple and easy to use unit. It has loads of patches(40 I think) half user and half system, a lot of effects too, I seem to remember from the manual that you can link up to 9 at the same time.
Editing patches is a breeze with the three rotary knobs doing all the work.
Changing between patches quickly can be a chore as there is only a up and down system of moving around the patch library - however with some editing you can store all your most used ones side by side.
Manual is good and covers all the basics including the use of the inbuilt drum machine.

Sound quality wise this thing rocks - well it did for the first year anyway, but more on that later. I use it connected to my amp but also as a mobile practice tool since it will run on batteries for about 14 hours and fits snugly into my rucksack. On earphones this sounds great, and using the built in rythmn unit set to metronome is great for nailing those tricky timings.
I use it with both my Strat and my Les Paul, previously ran a Westone Spectrum through it as well but I have since sold that guitar - and all sound great. When connected up to my solid state Peavey it adds tonal qualities to my sound that the amp alone could never muster.
What really makes this baby come alive though is the amount of patches and settings you can download from the web. I originally bought a Zoom GFX8 before this and apart from the confusingly large number of rotary switches, knobs and buttons on it, there just wasn't any info on it kicking about on how to get a Clapton tone or a tone for a particular solo by a favoured band etc. Now I know that a lot of the fun is trying to sort this stuff out for yourself, but then how many of us say "pah!" to tab and refuse the help it offers when working out a solo? anyway, there are numerous sites for the GFX707 and the amount of info on them for drum settings, patch settings etc are great.
A quick note on the drum settings, some might think it cheesy, but some of the looping tracks on it are great for jamming along too and the metronome is fab for practice.

This is my only bugbear. About a year after I bought it, the patches which featured modulation effects started sounding a little weird, but only after moving the footpedal. If you went on to the patch with the footpedal at any angle then the sound was great, move the footpedal at all in any direction and it went totally crazy like high pitched warbling. I tool=k it back to the shop I bought it from and the guy there checked it out and told me thats how the patches were meant to sound ... which was bullshit really as it was either broken when I got it and had got better, or was broken at the time I was in the shop.
Anyway they wouldn't do anything about it.
I still use it but get annoyed with the broken patches some of which I used to love using before they went wonky.
My old guitar teacher had one for about 5 years before I got mine and never had any trouble, so maybe I just got unlucky and picked up a bad one. I thought about replacing it, or writing to Zoom to complain (I may still write to them), but I have since purchased a Line 6 Guitar Port and use it as my main practice tool and the range of amps, effects and patches on it far outweigh those on the Zoom and the internet aspect is great and getting better all the time.

Haven't dealt with Zoom directly, but may do in the future so can't comment on it. The dealer support was negligable, but then it was out of warrently and not a high end product to begin with and to be fair to them they have been good at other times when I have bought other gear from them, so maybe they weren't too familiar with the product and didn't know that the sounds weren't as they should be.

I lay all sorts but nothing too heavy, I like clean, crunch and slightly over driven sounds and the Zoom delivers al of these .... if you like insane gain, it'll do that too.
Once you start writing your own patches on the thing is when you really start to get your money's worth. One day I was messing about with the presets, the next I sounded exactly like Dave Gilmour .... the next day Hendrix etc ... okay so I am not talking about my playing ability, but sound wise I had them nailed :o)
I tried out a few other effects, one by Boss, the GFX8 and a couple of Digitech ones and although they all sounded good, the only one I was trully happy with was the 707 ... can't explain it, but it was easy to use, portable, sounded great and was not too expensive.
Would I buy another one? Mmmmm not sure, the Guitar Port now covers my main bedroom practice sessions and I now only use the Zoom for travelling and weekends away etc, and if it were lost or stolen I could use my portable MD for this so I'm not sure about replacing it. However, if I didn't have the Line 6 GP in my arsenal, then I would most certainly buy another one.

---NOTICE---
---THIS IS FOR ANYONE WHO HAS EXPERIANCED WORN OUT JACKS WITH THIS PRODUCT---
Its not actually the jacks that are worn out. The solder joints inside the pedal where the jacks attach to the main circuit board are prone to cracking. This is easily fixed. All you need is a soldering iron and some VERY basic skill with it.
Open up the back by removing all of the screws on the metal back plate (duh). Find the points where the jacks meet the circuit board. they are easy to find. Each jack is connected by 3 rectangular solder joints that are in this shape (the top of the diagram being the part of the circuit board closest to the back of the pedal):
☼
☼ ☼
If you trace from the back of the pedal where the jack is, you can lead right to them. Notice how the solder around the joints is cracked? Heres how I fixed mine:
Before you start, you may want to mask the areas around the joints with some sort of tape (I used masking tape) to keep solder from moving around and possibly damaging the board. Also bear in mind the soldering iron may cause heat damage to the circutry so dont keep it in contact with the board for too long. Also, use a 15 or 30 watt soldering iron, higher wattages may damage the board. And finally, use 60/40 rosin core solder. Its designed for light electronics work. Many other solders are acid core. Avoid it, it damages electronic components.
I took a nail and put a small amount of flux on the tip. I melted the old solder on the joints, and while it was melted, I stuck the tip of the nail into the melted solder, then pulled it out. This removed most (dont remove all of it) of the old solder.
Next, I just melted and applied the solder as I would any other joint, do this however you see fit. I lightly fluxed the joint, and added the solder, but I used a bit more than there was before, to help prevent this problem from reocurring too often.
After the fix, it should work fine
If you need help, post you're questions in the effects forum at http://forums.tabcrawler.com . I can help you there. My screen name is Zeppo.

Well I read the manual before diggin into it... I used my Roland Cube-15's distortions to play with my garage band, and I had to write patches for the musics I played into the Zoom... it took me about 10 minutes and 1 or 2 times playing the music and making little arragements with the equalization... preety much easy to use... The manual is particularly good, and easy to understand, though the effects descritpion isn't very informative (but hey, how can you describe in words a sound ;) )

I use it with my Ibanez GRX70 and a Roland Cube-15, but I've tryed it out with other amps, and it always sounded good!It isn't noisy, and even if you need to cut the noise, ZNR (Zoom Noise Reduction) is very effective!
The distortion effects are normal, but if you twitch gain and equalization, you'll get the most out of it!
Chorus is pretty good, Flanger too (but I don't use it).The 3rd module wich includes reverb and delay is very good...I don't even like delays much, but have started using them since I bought it :)
The expression pedal is good for controlling the modules... I don't use it for wah, I've used a cry-babay wah and now the wah on the zoom doesn't seem very effective... but as I said, controlling Distortion, Modulation and Reverb with it is VERY HANDY :) At least for me :)
I've tryed some patches I got from the net, and they worked out fine, but I'd rather do my effects and toy with the thing.. It will take me quite some time yet to master it.
The Drum Machine is funny, and I use it to make my drummer practice faster :)
The 6 second recording/loop is just a luxury...The tuner is normal :) All in all it gets a 9 because of the price I payed for it, otherwise it would get a 7, because the modulation module isn't as good as it should be!

I payed 50 euros for it, I get a tuner, a distoriton pedal, a chorus pedal, a flanger, a delay and reverb pedal, an expression pedal!Ok they aren't top in their category, but I got a sound almost the same as a Boss simulated effect Overdrive Distortion... So I really can't complaint! Will it broke down in the future... I'd say it's likely... Is it the best... no it isn't... Is it good enough for starters and medium players without money (aaaaaah here's the right question).I'd say definitely. If it broke down would I get another? Probably get a better one if I had money...Do I regret buying it... not a chance... It's quite cool, and I find some reviews to be excessively on blaming the Zoom, and not the bad guitars and shity amps...People need to realize that they are not using professional material ;)

I use the gfx 707 via a sessionette 75-amp & PA. I have got a Squier Stagemaster and Ibanez Blazer.
The unit isn't noisy at all. The effects in itself are basically good, but the factory-settings are weak. There are great heavy sounds and clean sounds but there's nothing in between.
My favourite guitar players are adrian belew and robert fripp (both king crimson). Besides I like davids gilmour's (pink floyd) sound a lot.
Just the other day I found out that the internet is LOADED with settings for the gfx 707 (just get www.google.com and press settings zoom gfx 707 and you will get hundreds of seetings.) With these examples it is quite easy to get that pink ployd-sound. stilll looking for a great belew.

The only thing you got to do is spend some minutes reading the user's guide. Doing that, and practicing some with the multi-effects, you can really change parameters and create some new effects in seconds. Just like the other ZOOM multi-effects, is really easy and friendly to work with. The possibility to store a 6-digit name for the patches is really good to avoid some problems about finding the correct patch to the moment you are playing.

I'm using it with a Epiphone Sheraton II (semi-acoustic body) and with a Fender Stratocaster American Standard. The effects are good, generally. Some distortions are really good (lead/dist/metal), but some others are really awful (fuzz/overdrive). To avoid some problems about losing the expression and the sound of a long note, you have to increase some compressor to these distortions. Some modulations are really good; Chorus is really beutiful; Flanger and Pitch sounds like some computer midi files; The Expression Pedal isn't really good (just like every expression pedals built-in these multi-effects) - You can't expect a "Dunlop CryBaby" sound for 707. But that's good for using it as a volume controller. Reverb is REALLY good, much better than some other multi-effects (the other guitarist of my band have a Digitech RP-200, and the ZOOM Reverb is much better). The Delay isn't really good, but the Ping-Pong Delay, when used through a stereo amp is cool. ZOOM GFX707 is good for some clean effects, and bad for others. That happens with the distortions too.

I've been playing for 6 years. I play some latin rhytms (like bossa) and other "light" things, like jazz. The GFX 707 isn't really apropriate to these sounds. But I play some other sounds, like Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Yes, and some Progressive Rock Bands. Is a good match. It's really good as the first multi-effects pedal. If it were stolen, I wouldn't buy it again. Actually, I'm selling it. I'm looking after some BOSS pedals or any better multi-effect.

I use Squier Tele (sounds more like mexican Telecaster, good piece) and Squier Strat (same quality) and it works really good with it. Tele can be twanging or growling, Sound can scream or bell. I also tried Les-Paul like imitation and it was really good either. I mostly use Peavey Microbass amp and with 707 it sounds better (for me) than guitar amps in same class. It is enough for rehearsals and home playing. Good combination.
It is cheap digital multieffect, keep this in mind. I was quite dissapointed with factory presets, they are mostly useless and/or noisy. You have to get used to it and make your own effects. This costs some time, but sound you can get from it can be real. Amp simulators are mostly useless, unless you play directly to speaker without guitar amp. Distortion effects have wide range, and mostly very very usable when properly equalized they have crunch and growl, almost ecerything, just they get a bit broken when turned to maximum. Some are really unusale for chords. Compressor, I think, only makes it play louder or enhance with Bright or Flat. Modulation effects are nice, delays, choruses, vibes and so, some that look unusable can be very good when tuned properly.
Chorus is nice, V-Chorus is very warm, delay sounds ok, vibe is good if set properly, tremolo too. Pedal-Wah is somehow not very accurate but usable when tuned carefully. Reverbs are nice and deep, only problem is you really hear it is digital. But, hey, what you expect from cheap multieffect? Afterall it doesn't sound much worse than analogs. Only you can't expect that detaility and dynamicity of sound.

I think it is really usable thing, I even made a recording with it through a Musicman 100watt full tube amp. It sounds good. Really good. If tuned carefully it can be compared to a little collection of analog effects, it doesn't so THAT good, but not bad either. My effect memory is full and I can't do anything with it, I would need 3 times more to have enough. With expression pedal you can really do some havoc, so I think it is really good piece for peaople that want to get used to guitar effects, or need many effects (like me) for lower price.

I trust this thing about as far as a cat can throw it. The jacks are completely worn out and the way they assemble it you cant fix them. Its the disposable pedal. It lasts 3-6 months, then kicks out. 95% of the time im playing, and the thing just stops, on account of the fact the jacks are so loose the cable doesnt touch the connectors. It blows, you cant gig with it, and even practicing at home is becoming a stretch because I'm always having to stop and shake the cable around. It is a fairly intuitive device. It was my first multieffects unit. I was a multiple single-effect pedal guy until about a year-and-a-half ago when I got this thing. I was able to plug right in and play without any trouble. It delivers a good sound, but does tend to be a tad noisy. However, you can tweak it and your amp a bit to work around that. Editing patches is no problem, just use the three knobs to increase or decrease. The manual is fine, neither stellar, nor hellish. I was not aware of the "firmware revision number" and have not "upgraded" my unit.

I do a variety of things with it in my home studio and in live performance. Mostly, I'm running my fairly cheesy Yamaha 311MS guitar through it into a Fender Bassman. Sound quality is pretty impressive, considering the price. I have used it straight into the mixer, both live and in studio as well and it sounds pretty good, though not quite as good as mic-ing my Fender amp. The rather simplistic, but good sounding, amp simulations do give some variety. I find it can be noisy, but mostly in PC-based recording. This was probably an artifact of some sort of impedence-matching or sampling rate issue, but I'm not sure. I stopped using the PC program and got a freestanding multitracker and the problem went away. Gives a pretty good imitation of The Edge's digital delay (I think he used to use a Memory Man) sound. The detuned sound is very close to what a lot of '80s alternative bands used. Generally, though, I'm not trying to copy others, so never really looked at the pedal's job as being to emulate somebody's tone. One of my favorite distorted sounds on it is the one called "Flash". One problem is that the distorted sounds are way louder than the cleaner tones, but this is simple to adjust for and is a rather natural issue. It is a good first multieffects pedal either for beginners or for guys like me just testing the water as regards giving up all those cool little metal boxes. The tones are unexpectedly good and I have used them on our latest album for layers, but it is also clear to the experienced ear that it's not quite professional quality. Close enough for most purposes, though.

Here's where the only real problem with this thing shows up. It is all plastic. I'm not one to jump on my pedals (though I do trip over them sometimes; very embarassing!) and I always treat my equipment, no matter how inexpensive, as something I'm very lucky to have. However, despite babying this unit, the output jack has become loose. I now have to brace a chorus pedal against the output cable end to keep the jack in place. I cannot depend on this anymore as, even when I remain relatively still, it cuts out. Pretty horrible during a solo. If you need something that will last reliably for more than a year-and-a-half, better try another product. I will no longer use it for gigs. I can still use it for practice at home, but I imagine it's time is limited even there. But, for the price, you can't have it all.

I am lead singer and guitarist for Phlox Parallax, an alternative rock band in the Midwest. I have been playing with guitars most of my life and I'm 36 now. I own too much gear to list here and most of it isn't that impressive, just by name. Is there a 12-step program for gearoholics? This unit is a good match for me, particularly as it was my first multieffects unit. I would not buy the Zoom GFX-707 again as I am ready to go forward with a rack-mountable unit now and leave all my little metal boxes at home. This pedal convinced me that I can do that. I will consider Zoom products again in the future. All the variety available in tones and the onboard drum machine are quite lovable features. The main problem is the lack of durability, but I knew that going into the purchase. It is made of plastic. Plastic fails if used repeatedly. The machine also has a loop sampler that was a little fun, but I had trouble getting it to synch just right. The original choice to buy this unit was based on price and availability at zZounds.com. Didn't really compare it to anything else. This unit is great for experimenting with new effects, but don't expect it to hold up to years of use, even if you baby it.

The preset distortions are fair, but you won't find very good high gain patches. Even the preset "Metal" effect is pretty weak. There's good stuff for classic rock etc. but you won't find that thick crunch of a Mesa Boogie Mark IV in there. However with a little adjustment, you can get some respectable tones. Of course, no pedal can ever match the distortion of a good amplifier.
The chorus and modulation effects are very good for the price. I am quite pleased with them. I have been able to emulate many artists' clean tones.
Overall the tone is quite good. Especially the chorus and modulation effects.

Overall the pedal is quite solid. Some people seem to expect POD level sounds, but you'll never be able to get close to that in this price range. If you want a pedal mostly for distortions, perhaps this isn't the right choice. But the chorus, flange etc. are very good. The pedal is a good bargain for the price paid.
It's not as good as a rackmount unit or anything, but you'll get some good sounds out of it. It's a great pedal for practicing and messing around.

I used this with my Washburn BT-2 (fairly cheap and generally crap-sounding) electric, and it breathed new life into it. My crap Japanese amp has never sounded so good. I also tried the pedal with my electro-acoustic, and found that the delay and chorus effects sounded great. There are a couple of crap-sounding effects like pitch-shift, but apart from that good.

As an amateur musician who just plays for fun mostly, this pedal is great. The wah-wah is really what I bought it for, and that works fine, the amp-sim is good but not spectacular, and a longer delay might be nice but the flexibilty of the user effects (programming your own) was a nice bonus - distortion, modulation, three different types of EQ and reverb can all have 2 or 3 parameters tweaked, all in the same patch. As a cheap all-in-one, this is great.

Pretty easy if you read through the manual and get an understanding of it. The effects are pretty easy to tweak - and certainly need tweaking from the presets. It takes a while to get a great sound out of it, but I think that's true for any effect set up you could think of.

I'm using a marshall valvestate 100W amp, with a variety of guitars - 2002 fender standard strat, danelectro DC-59, a Gibson Les Paul Studio, and a Simon and Patrick acoustic (a great sounding acoustic guitar). I've been playing for 9 years, play with a lot of different bands and have to be able to cover every style from funk, to punk, to jazz, to praise, and anything else you could imagine. I've had this unit for about 2 years now.
The PRESETS ARE HORRIBLE. Whoever programmed them had no taste. Luckily, they give us enough nobs and options to tweak stuff alot.
Once you do that, I personally think it sounds pretty good. The presets really suck, but there are enough options on this thing to get a really good sound out of it.
When I run straight into my amp, it does seem to take away some tone, but that's because you are now using a different pre-amp system! If you buy a good sounding amp, you probably like the sound of the amp - most of which is created by that companies pre-amp processing. However, I find that if I run it as an effects loop off my amp, I can get some great sounds out of it. Although only some effects sound good in that setting (don't use distortion.)
The compression, chorus, delays, reverb, and phaser all sound great in this setting.
What amazed me recently was how adding the acoustic simulator into my effects loop improved the sound of my acoustic. Normally acoustic guitars sound like crap through normal guitar amps, but after putting the acoustic simulator on, it actually sounded pretty good. I could hardly tell my guitar was plugged in. It sounded like I was just gaining volume. Pretty sweet.
The distortions are alright, but I prefer the sounds my amp makes, so I don't use them in that kind of a setting.
I also use it for playing at church in a praise band where I plug directly into a DI that runs into the board. This is where I need to be able to use it's distortions, amp sims, and practically everything on it. With several hours of tweaking, I've got some really nice sounding settings that work great for this. It really saves me from carrying an amp around.
And while there are better things out there, I think that FOR THE PRICE, this unit is pretty hard to beat.

My biggest advice is that you MUST be willing to spend the time to craft your own sound. It took me countless hours and weeks of experimentation before I could get my ideal sound.
I'm a rock/metal player...I use it with an ESP M-201 into a Crate GX212 combo. The distortion (if managed properly) is thick, cruchy and packs a real punch. The amp models help too. The clean tone is excellent as well, producing a very crisp tone. Once again, its up to personal taste.
The effect I find most lacking is the Wah...the tone is thin, weak and is absolutely dreadful. There are some neat effects as well, but most of them aren't worth your time.

A problem i've encountered is that the displays are impossible to read under bright light. So day-time, outdoor gigs won't turn out so well.
I've owned it for about 2 years. Once, It was completely soaked when it started raining in an outdoor gig. After letting it dry, it didn't miss a beat.
A huge problem is the input/output jack. It is not very well fixed, so if you jiggle your patchcable a lot, the jack can get very loose, and the connection will be disrupted. You'll have to open it up and re-sauter the connections.
I've used it for all my gigs (because I can't afford anything else) and it will do fine as long as you don't step on it.

The use of pot style knobs for digital patch editing was a great idea. They packed a lot of functionality into the buttons, which can be confusing. I think the mappings make sense, but it will take a little while to grok it all. This was clearly a design decision to keep cost down. Nothing wrong with that. The large LED display is a real plus. Again, not a cool expensive LCD but functional and well used.

When evaluating this unit, you've got to remember the price range that it sits in. Personally, I've added some more expensive equipment since purcahsing it, but still use some functions on the 707 anyway because they work so well.
There are a huge variety of distortion sounds which vary in quality. Overall, there seems to be some 'similarness' of tone across all of them. You can definitely tell they're 'digital' but many of them sound good for digital distortions. You can tweak them to get some pretty good fuzz and aggressive industrial sounds. If you're used to a tube amp or POD or serious amp modeller they are not going to sound great even with tweaking because they just are not in that league (in fact they will probably sound terrible, if you're really a purist :). But overall, for a cheap digital multifx this unit probably has the best distortions I've heard in that class.
One distortion that deserves special note is the 'Power Drive'. It is basically a tube screamer rip off and can be used like a tube screamer. If you're purist, this probably won't cut it (but if you're a purist you're not interested in this unit anyway) but if you don't mind it sounding kind of unique (a plus IMHO), this module can be used as a TS replacement. I still use the Power Drive as a Cheapass tube screamer and it works very well for me in this way. That alone makes the unit worthwhile considering the cost!
The cabinet/amp sims are really not on par with POD or V-AMP, but are good enough that you could do demos and direct recording without additional equipment. They're also useful when using the 707 as a headphone amp so they are a definite plus even if they're not high end tonewise.
Modulation stuff is fantastic. In spite of owning more expensive gear, the 707 Phaser still sounds amazing. IMHO, it alone is worth the price of admission, it smokes my more expensive Boss' phaser. The chorus can also be made to sound very good. These FX can hold a candle to more expensive units. A very pleasant surprise for a box this cheap.
Delay effects are very good. I like digital delays and this one works well. Reverb is servicable.
Acoustic Sim is surprisingly good.
Pitch shifting, etc, are usable in a pinch but sound 'cheap'. I personally don't care much for these FX anyway. They are useful for messing with to understand these FX if you later go for a more pricey unit but you will definitely not want to base your main tone on the 707 shifter. :)
The compressor is useless.
I'm not a huge wah fan, so I think this wah sounds fine. Some people insist on comparing it to dedicated wahs that cost as much or more than this entire unit (again, think multifx). I still use the Wah on it even though I have more expensive gear now for most of the other functions of the 707 but I don't have a dedicated wah and am not expecting to anytime soon. So IMHO, the wah is a real plus. The travel of the foot pedal is very short so, if you're into wah you will defnitely buy a separate one eventually.
As many have mentioned with the Noise Reduction it is *DEAD* quiet. I have a POD, ADA MP-1, Digitech GSP5, BOSS VF-1, and Behringer UltraFex II. This is literally the quietest unit of the bunch in spite of being the least expensive. Amazingly low noise output.
It seems transparent enough to me and the spec on the D/A converters are very good for an inexpensive unit. I've seen other reviews here complaining about this, but the unit I have is definitely not a tone sucker.
Overall, for a unit this cheap, I think the sound quality is really very good when compared to other units in this price range (that's waht my numeric rating is based on, compared to my VF1 or POD, this unit would be like a 5 or 6). Like I said, the Power Drive and Phaser are enough to make me want to keep the unit indefinitely in spite of owning more expensive stuff now.

I think this unit is fantastic for what it is: A sweet, compact multi-fx unit with tons of practical features geared toward practice.
You could really use this on the road as a private guitar workstation (even more so, the 707II with it's smart card ability).
If you're looking for a cheap supertone box, the low end of the amp modeller market is probably more worthwhile: Behringer VAMP2, Genesis1, JStation.
The 707 really is an all-in-one box for the beginner. Even after several years on the market, there still is no other unit (except for the newly released 707II) that is so well suited toward covering every base for private play/practice:
MultiFX
Headphone Amp
Speaker/Direct Recording Device
Drum Machine
Chromatic Tuner
Aux IN Capability
Sampler/Phrase Trainer
And it even sounds good! :)
When you move on to more expensive gear the 707 will likely still provide a few tones so great you'll want to keep it to play around with or for private practice.
I really genuinely wish there had been something like this available when I was truly a beginner. The FX are good enough that you can learn all the ins and outs of the different FX types, the tone is good enough for beginner recording or making a cheap practice amp sound much better, the sampler can be used for copping licks, it's a headphone amp, and it can tune you up. Oh yeah and there's a drum machine!! I would have killed for a drum machine as a beginner, parcticing with a solid rhythm will really improve your playing and timing.
Anyway this unit is highly recommended and an excellent value considering the inexpensive price tag. If you need something that can do it all and really have limited means, this thing is just the best.

Its a multi effect pedal for gods sake you just dont plug it in and hey presto thats the sound you want , it is very adjustable you can get all sorts of sounds out of it from utter crap to realy nice ,why the hell do people fork out to buy it if they didnt like it ???? I have an idea they are probably new to guitar playing and have to buy all the toys thinking they will sound like "Gary guitar god". Well take a reality check and play it before you buy it, dont just walk in to the shop and say "duh give me that one dude " and walk out if you are new to playing and too shy to play it in the shop ask the sales man to demo it for you these are not penny things to buy then not like ,dont listen to these guys who say it sounds crap try it your self first , it sounds good for what it is and considering the ammount of effects and mixing at that it is a bargain ( only if you can use it of course )overall for home recording , practice it well up to the job. it is worthy 8 sound quality

This machine did take me a while to get to grips with. It was my first ever fx pedal and was recommended to me by my guitar teacher. The preset fx are good and bad. Some of them are absolutely dire. There are a couple of good ones, i like the Step effect a lot, and wind is good for an atmospheric kinda sound. The manual is good, it does show you what to do, easily, but not condescendingly. My unit has never been upgraded, though I did try to run it with a Boss OD1..... never again.

I use this with an epiphone nighthawk into a Marshall 80 watt transistor amp. The distortion thing on this machine is CRAP. ABSOLUTELY AWFUL! don't rely on this distortion cos you cannot make out notes, its just one big horrific noise. The ZNR on this baby does work for me, I dont have any problems with noise unless I use some of my custom fx involving heavy distoriton and their wah.
One thing you must hear about this product is that it sounds different with different amps. Marshall sounds ok with it, but Peavey is dodgy as hell.
I am influenced by radiohead massively. Now if you have ever seen jonny greenwoods and ed o briens setups you will know that the gfx 707 is laughable compared to it.
i play lead guitar in my band, and i like to think that lead guitar adds atmosphere and counter melodies... i dont use the distortion much, but thats because its SHIT! i cant bring that home to ya more!
also its very dodgy if u try to combine it with stomp boxes. Five second sampler?!?!? hardly even f**king worth it

This is the dodgiest machine in the world. Do not depend on this. It is temperamental, at times I play live with it and i like the sound. I practiced last nite with my band and it sounded pretty reasonable! but tehn i played a gig a week ago and it sounded shite! The output jack is dodgy, but then i have had it for about two years, so wear and tear on an initially cheap thing is bound to take its toll
I do, but shouldn't play with this and no backup at gigs. it has backfired dramatically on me before. The bypass thing is ridiculous to try and get both pedals down simultaneously.

Quite tricky to use at first - you have to invest a couple of hours learning how all the features work. Editing patches is ok, there are so many sounds and options that if you work at it you can get the sound you want. Because of all the stuff you can do with it you tend to come up with what you think are really clever things to do live (like at the end of a gig I would use the foot pedal to record the last phrase of a song and then walk off stage with it on endless repeat next to the amp feeding back) This worked a couple of times but generally trying to do clever things with it live is pretty tricky. Manual was complicated but then I think this pedal is complicated. The expession pedal is also a waste of time live - again its clever what you can do with it but its not practical, I tried using it as a volume control but it weakened the sound when not on full volume. In my opinion, the best thing going for multi-effects is the built in tuner, unfortunately the one on this board isn't that great - its really difficult to get the note to sit in the middle light, no matter how minute you adjust your guitar it seems to tell you the note is either flat or sharp.
Sound Quality
:

95% of the preset sounds are bad - there's always too much reverb and other 1980's effects which you could never use straight off live - you'd look really bad. I play a telecaster through a 1982 Fender Concert. Basically my set up at the moment is as follows: I have a foot switch for my amp for either clean or distorted, then I've got this pedal - to set up a patch I basically went through all the parameters so that there was nothing on the patch and then built a patch up for the effect I wanted. At the moment I've got a patch with just a bit of compression on it and some tone changes to add to my basic clean sound when I want it; then I've got another patch with a tiny bit of chorus and other stuff really subtely; my next patch is a standard flanger - I think this is very good indeed (once you fix it to how you like it); and finally I use the auto wah - I think the auto wah is extremely good - we've used it in a couple of songs and it really stands out and makes the songs, I don't know if you can get an auto wah on its own??? so this is a really good effect. These are all the effects I use. I've tried creating a distortion effect to give my amp a bit more edge than it comes with on its own, but i just can't find anything classy enough to have confidence using. Another problem with this pedal is that there is a slight delay switching to some of the effects - depending on the type of music you play this can be deadly!!! Those extra milliseconds can make you look like a real amateur if people notice the delay on something. The other major problem is that I wanted to set up some empty patches which would just work as a bypass to my amp (ie. you tap the switch to go to the patch as another way of bypassing to the amp) the problem with this is that even though you try to put all the effects to zero the resulting patch doesn't sound like bypass, there's still something there. I thought there must be of way of doing this but I just couldn't find it. Regarding the amp simulators, I flirted with the idea of doing away with an amp and just relying on these because they seem quite good (no more heavy equipment!!!) however, again I couldn't get the thing to work in practice and sound good enough for me to put faith in this live. So, overall some good sounds but some real problems as well.

Ok this is my real gripe with this pedal - its stopped working on me!! At my last gig it just turned itself off and on again in the middle of a song!!! unbelievable - i thought it might be the adapter I was using but I changed this at last rehearsal and its still happening. I've got another gig at the weekend and have no idea what I'm gonna do.
I've had this pedal for almost 2 years and now its broke. Even if yours works though there are still other issues - the thing doesn't come with an adapter so you have to go and buy one. The adapter itself plugs in right next to your guitar lead - I had quite a bulky multi headed adapter and the other ends which weren't in use made contact with the metal of the guitar lead so I had to cover them all in insulation tap to stop interference! Also, a baby hamster could pull the adapter out the back of the board, if you're jumping around the stage slamming your foot on the pedals you better be careful it doesn't unplug itself. The other BIG problem I have faced is the bypass issue I mentioned above - the only effective way I found of bypassing the pedal was to press both switches at the same time - this is extremely difficult in a live setting (you have to make sure you press both at exactly the same time or you switch up or down an effect) when I first started using this board I was really worried about doing this - a couple of times I would go into one of the ridiculous effect patches instead of clean from my amp (some of our live recordings are actually hilarious because of this mistake) My solution was to copy the same patch in 5 positons in a row so that at least I would switch to the same patch my mistake - how naff is that?!

This pedal is only really good for cramming just about everything there is into one cheap box. If you're new to effects its a good way to learn how to use and create them. The problem is that it is basically an entry level pedal which thinks its a grown up. On paper you'd think it was all you ever needed when in practice you just can't rely on it. Instead of putting so much into one pedal the designers should have concentrated more on fixing the little glitches which all of a sudden become really big when your're on stage. I'd say it would make a useful addition when recording and messing about at home (it has got some good sounds on it and does allow for lots of experimentation of effects) The only reason I've used it for so long really is because of the auto wah sound which I'm not sure how I can replicate without it.

The presets are easy to browse through and ajustment is pretty easy. If the screen was a bit more advanced (more lines of text etc instead of looking like a calculatr) it would be easier to understand some of it. The maual is pretty basic, and sometimes a bit hard to understand, but ok really.

Ok I should say that this is very much entry level stuff. It's not at all bac though. I have been using it with my dad's Marshall Park 50watt amp. It sounds ok with my Washburn Maverick.
Within the next few days, I'm upgrading myself to a Gibson Les Paul and a Roland VGA-7, so this is behind me to an extent, but if you're starting out this is good- especially if you're into metal/grunge.
Most of the sounds are metal/grunge orientated, which ain't my thing really. They are all pretty good quality though. The auto wah is too quiet really, the compressed clean sound is way too loud, as is the overdrive. Otherwise, no real complaints.

If you can't figure this thing out without the manual then you don't deserve to be alive. That said, a quick read of the manual does help... Editing patches is a learning curve but once you get to grips with all the parameters you can start taking your sound apart. Manual is ok, translated and helpful enough.

I use this with a Dean EVO DN76 Doubleneck, Standard tele through the Zoom 707 into Marshall amps. ZNR does actually work sometimes, gets noisy when low on battery power! Effects are variable but there are some great ones. The Van Halen, when tweaked correctly is awesome, chorus is pretty good too and i like the overdrive, Auto-Pan is an interesting one to play with. Factory presets are pretty rubbish to be honest but hey, its a multi effects, what do u expect?? That's why they have built in custom features to make your own. Even the P-Wah can be hashed into a respectable even good sounding Wah wah. Just be patient! I play mostly rock>metal but anything from foofighters, grunge, to heavy as f*k metal can be achieved once you take the time to sit down with this baby.

Low rating because they lie. The go on about all these modules, whenm in fact they are just like what you asign the pedal to do, and you only really have 3 genuine ones. It kionda owns up to this in the manual.

The naff little screen is also impossible to see unless in EXACTLY the right conditions.

OK, I know I dont have a great guitar in the front (Squier strat), but recently I parted with a lot of wonga for an amp with a valve in.
I love the tone the valves gave me, and I decided that for one song, it would be great coupled with a wah. I rigged up the 707 in the fx loop, and imagine the look of disgust on my face when, even in full bypass mode, it made my Ecc-83 sound like a particularly cheap piece of silicon!
The main drawback to its sound is when you dont want it. I obviously dont need drive, and I just wanted a wah, and it mushed up my sound, and spat out a mess with some wah over the top of it. Not good!
The distortions themselves are just miles away from even my cheap stomper (#45 Guvnor+), let alone the nuances of vales which it destroyed. The flange/trmelo stuff is also a bit, well, lacking.
The acou sim is quite good, especially with some chorus dialled over the top.
The compressor is dire! It doesn't compress, it just muches things up.
I have to give it to it that its quiet, even from mains. But its still crap.

That was about a year ago. I dug itn back up, and taking a solodering iron and shoving it up trhe back at random did a world of good.
I trashed one of the switches, but now it works better- tip pull out the switch and break it- it makes it work better, providing the jacks havent fucked up already!

I purchased my GFX-707 two years ago with limited expectations: I wanted to hear as many effects as possible at the cheapest price and I wanted a portable headphone amp to travel with or practice alone. As a library of sounds, the GFX-707 succeeds, though many of the sounds are better heard through headphones (e.g., stereo chorus). If you want to do much editing, check out the Zoom website where they have posted the whole operation manual in a PDF file. The manual is thorough and the patches are all alterable; be aware that tinkering with the settings is a chore and time taken away from actual music. To the pedal's credit, there are a lot of presets, including the ones for the drum machine (better than a metronome) and the amp simulations, so you can certainly make a lot of different noises.
Sound Quality
:
6
This is not a foot pedal for public performance. It's too small, too light, and just too cheesy to do to your audience. The pedals, including the wah/volume one, are too tiny, the red LED readout can't be read on stage, and the bypass mode strips tone and volume very badly. What the GFX does do well is provide samples of a lot of sounds you may find a use for in recording and just searching for ideas. Fooling around with just headphones, you'll love the stereo separation and amp simulations; these do not translate well through a regular amp (I use small Fenders). The preset effects can be embarrassing (VHALEN and the Larry Carlton ones are awful), but with my Strat I've actually gotten a usable 12-string Rickenbacker sound, some good compressed Tele riffs, and found songs to use the strange Violin and Reverse presets for.
Reliability
:
6
It's irrelevant to rate this for stage use; this is more of a personal item (like a Walkman)that will last as long as you avoid abusing it. In my two years, the jacks and switches have all hung in there, but I've never dropped it or yanked on the cables.

The GFX-707 is essentially a toy, fun to play with, made of plastic, not too expensive. I use very few effects when I play (reverb) and depend on the amp for volume and distortion, so doubt I'll ever buy another pedal effect. The comparable Korg, Boss, Digitech, and other multi-effect pedals I tried didn't seem to add anything better. I am happy with the the GFX however for what it does provide: funny sounds, interesting presets, a tuner, a drum machine/metronome, and a headphone amp.

No hope for getting it fixed if anything drops off the bottom, cos taking out the circuit board to fix it means taking everthing (display., switches etc) out with it, and then working out how the hell the got the piece of junk to go together at all. Basically everything sucks......... distortions are week and thin sounding and some just sound like static with metal being dragged down the highway in the background....... the acoustic thing was pretty good, i thought, and some of the effects werent terrible, but also not great.... I hate how you cant turn off the reverb (at least i dont know how).... every patch has it and it gets old....... If you dink with the settings long enough you can get a reletively decent distortion sound using the metal or wild fuzzy, but the dist1 and 2 and od1 and 2 and anything thats compressed doesnt sound very good....... Oh yeah, the compressor and distortion modular is the same, which bothers me........ anyways, if u get it be prepared to work to get any usably patches...... and the van halen thing does kinda suck..... and who is gonna use the jappennese pop patch???? anyways, i give it a 6 cuz you can get some kinda good sounds out of it, but u have to work for it...........

Once you get the hang of it it's easy to get what may be called a good sound from this pedal. The editing system is useful and easy to use although I think the whole pedal would be a lot better if each module could do everything all the others can so it would actually be possible to have, say chorus and vibrato on the same patch and its also annoying how you have to set the EQ for each patch instead of having a setting for the whole pedal.
The manual is very helpful and clear and especially useful when explaining each module although I still don't know how to use the jam function.

First of all as everyone else has said this pedal is very cheap, probably the cheapest multi fx processor there is, so of course the sound isn't gonna be authentic of any type of sound.
I use this with a valvestate amp which helps cos it puts a bit of life into the sterilised sound the pedal gives. The preset patches are mostly crap INCLUDING the Van halen one which everyone thinks is so great, But that doesn't matter cos you can delete half of them for your own patches. The patches all seem to be different volumes which is very annoying when you switch to an earsplittingly loud patch after have to turn it right up cos of the last quiet patch.
I have only been playing electric for 1yr but I still know that most of the effects on this are pathetic. The distortions are all crap and completely unbelievable, the phaser sounds weak and tinny, the vibrato sounds really dodgy, the compressor is useless and kills the attack of your guitar at most settings, the wah sounds too harsh and i have no idea what you would use the step or ring effect for.
The ampsim is completely unbelievable and makes little difference although it is a plus because some of the amps do actually make the guitar sound better.
The zoom noise reduction is actually quite good at cutting out the hiss but it seems to cut out some of the sound from the guitar so I never put it on.
All this said, the acoustic guitar sim, the chorus and the reverbs all sound alright.

Most of the people that bought this are probably begginners as anyone playing for more than 3yrs would not be seen dead with this. Because of this most of the reviews for this are better than they should be, If you got several experts to review it the reviews would probably be a lot worse.
Cos the distortions are so bad if your amp doesn't already have a good distortion you should really get a separate pedal for dist maybe from boss or marshal.
You may think this is okay for a begginers pedal but I would disagree cos even begginners will soon get pissed off with this pedal so if you are a begginer I would reccomend saving up a bit longer for a slightly better more expensive pedal.

Couldn't be easier to use while playing - whack the big tough ABS plastic buttons to scroll left and right through the effects, put your foot on the expression pedal and play away. Big easy to use LCD display and great battery life.

I run a Squire Stagemaster through Venom cables into the GFX-707 and straight out into a 30watt Marshall combo, during gigs this is run through a phonic PA system. The guitar tone setting is usually about 1/2 way, the amp bass control is at two o clock and the treble is at nine o clock, this gives incredible sounds from the zoom, the wah is clean and has a good variation level (although nothing beats a true crybaby pedal) and all the distortions sounds gorgeous, the retro sounds are lush and full, the heavy metal rings and screams and the solo channels give an excellent tone.

When simply switching between pre-set effects, this pedal is a breeze. However when trying to set your own effects or edit the e.q's of the old ones it gets very tricky. The non-position sensitive knobs really piss you off after awhile, because everytime you touch them they start at zero setting. The lack of buttons (requiring a comnibation of two or more to select a function makes editing also tough. Dont wait till the day of practice to set some new tones, you'll definitely be sitting out.

But, if I could tell you to do anything effects wise, buy the separate pedals, and keep them simple. All one needs is distortion and wah anyway, trilly shit is for geezers.

Presets are crappy .. nearly all of them! BUT, if you make some tweaking, you'll find for example distortions that you wouldn't exept to get at this price. Phaser, Flanger, Chorus, Octaver and Delays are good. But loss in price is a loss in tone. Sound is not so warm or real. But some of it is adjustable...

Using the presets is a no-brainer. Customizing your sound requires some time with the user manual (no big deal). Would like to be able to bounce back and forth between effects that aren't in the preprogrammed sequence with greater ease (again, 5 minutes with the user manual).

Look people, it's a cheap but clever little pedal for jamming rock and metal riffs. If you're looking for sweet tone and bought this pedal, it's you're own fault if your unhappy (see previous review) - that's not what it's for... hook up a gibson to a tube screamer and a nice tube amp if that's what you want. If you want a distortion pedal with a built in drum machine to jam 80's and 90's rock riffs on - look no further. It's got some really great distortion sounds - like having a fuzz pedal, metal, grunge, rock, VanHalenesque all in one. The distortion settings are excellent and you can switch between different amp sounds - cool! The other settings are essentially useless, so, again... if you want jazz/blues/rockabilly - look elsewhere. Not versatile, but does a few things very well.

Most people here are real amateurs, morons, bigenners, and deaf people. I can sure tell that. If you want to use this thing to record with you can't get worse tones. This is by far the most worthless pieace of shit I have *ever* heard. No warmth what so ever. It doesn't even SOUND like a guitar once plugged in. Imagine applying cold digital distortion in a VST plug to your guitar. THAT is how it sounds. Nobody who ever played with an amp or ever heard how a guitar should sound will like it. You can not, in any way possible, record a song with this crap. Do NOT buy it! I am not kidding! The only thing that is cool is the delay... but then again, you can easily make a similar delay on another unit or in VST!

Lets Be straight - This aint a pedal you gig with. for a start its plastic and not solid thick plastic. You'll be worried about going through the damn thing. ALso patch changing is a pain in the arse. YOu either have direct load which means you have to scroll and activate every patch till you get the right one or you scroll through without activation and then through a feit of amazing skill and precision you simultaneously press both patch buttons at the same time. Now if your playing a complex riff and r coming up to a challenging solo u will want a quick change not perform a miracle. In case you haven't realised it totally throws your concentration
Bottomline
Great for practice
Dont gig with it although its a worthy backup ( at best ).

I play a Epiphone SG through a crapy Marshal amp but it still sounds great. Noise is no real poblem, oviously higher volumes tend to be a bit touchy.
Cant help feeling that a lot of the patches are VERY simular, the range of distortion for example. The chorus is great fun and the Van Halen setting is great. The thing that lets this pedal down most is the Wah, its a load of toss basicly, I dont go near it!

I use a
Washburn > Zoom GFX707 > BOSS RC20 loopstation >into> Marshall combo or a PA for live/ Band stuff.
I don't find it noisy but if you have a problem with noise it will be easy to stop as there is the zoom noise reduction thing.
The distortion is really good quality for the price. I can get really good boogie-metal sounds to marshall-like blues and rock tones with a few tweaks and turns!
The clean effects are also pretty amazing. I can get a decent fender type clean tone out of it.
There are loads of really annoyingly pointless patches on this that make you wonder why in the hell they were put there in the first place but you might be able to use them!

I bought this pedal because my friend has one and I thought it was really amazing and really cheap.
I wish was slightly bigger so some of its features could be used to their full potential, for instance, the drum pedal can only be activated by a tiny button and the buttons are all really close.

This is a very easy pedal to use IF YOU READ THE MANUAL! I have had this pedal for about 2 years and only recently read the manual and make my own patches. Some of the preset patches are kinda stupid and pointless like the auto wah. But it also has some other patches that are pretty cool and very easy to edit.

You can get some pretty loud shit out of this. The preset distortion, VHALEN, is my favorite distortion but is quite bassy(nothing that a little editting can't fix). The Style I play is thrash/
heavy metal,(Metallica, Pantera, Black Sabbath, Iron maiden)this pedal has a great sound for that style. It also has a preset
12-string patch which sound nothing like it on an electric, but sounds pretty good on my semi-acoustic. You can also get a good acoustic sound for electric.

i have had this pedal for about 2 years and in that time the pedal has snapped, the power supply has packed up, the two patch pedals have come off and the jack sockets have snapped. But now it doesn't work at all. I have used this for a couple of gigs, on the first it screwed up(very embarassing), and the second was at a gig in school and it was fine, but packed up later! I'll have to admit when I first got this thing almost 2 years ago, I had no clue how to edit patches for several months. Stupidly, I thought that the presets were the only sounds I was gonna get. When I finally stopped being lazy and read the manual, it made things a heck of a lot easier. Editing patches now is a cinch for me, yet the interface is going to be kinda confusing for some people. It not as self-explanatory as say the DigiTech RP200. You really need to mess around with the settings and explore what sounds right to you. It takes a little while to dial in a good sound because you have to keep in mind the sound of your guitar and amp and balance it with the pedal sound. Overall editing patches will be easy if you take time to read the manual and practice doing it.

I use a Standard Mexican-made Fender Strat with Duncan Performer Scorcher Rails in the bridge and neck, and a Fender Princeton 65. The thing is slightly noisy. Its not as bad since there's a noise gate, but you can hear a distinct hissing sound when your not playing. That was disappointing, because my friend doesn't even have a noise gate on his amp and its still quieter than when i'm using pedal. The effects are good. I especially liked both the choruses, which have a nice clear, ringy, high-quality sound. Tremolo is pretty good, only that you gotta make sure you set it so it doesn't overclip. Pedal wah was not spectacular and if you set it to bf, it makes this annoying volume swell that hurts the ears. The reverbs and clean compressor were awesome, and i can get these nice, big clean sounds that fill the room. Flanger is good, but not as thick as my friends Ibanez Chorus/Flanger pedal. I find that it didn't have enough attack and the harmonics were spudgy.
The best sounds from this pedal were the distortions. For my main distortion I use the OD2 setting plus the Combo A amp sim for massive bass (I don't recommend using the bright settings if you have an openback amp). I can get a good punk sound (ala Green Day, Offspring) from this. I find the noise gate however, takes away pretty much all feedback, so i can't really end a song in a barrage of squeals and noise. Yet I don't want to turn the noise gate off because of the above noise problem. I also use the acoustic simulator for acoustic-type passages, the Power Dirve to closely simulate the new Green Day, Warning album sound, and metal to go to a Randy Rhoads/Metallica scooped thrash sound.
Overall I am pleased with most of the sounds, but its not perfect.
Reliability

Reliable, though one time it did stop working during a performance. It probably was the adapter though, because i checked the inside of the pedal and everything was AOK. I changed the adapter and it works perfectly now. However, I'm giving it a 9 since its only plastic and has a higher tendency to break.

If this was stolen, I'd be pissed for a while, but then I'd probably set my sights on a DigiTech RP200 or a Boss ME-33. Dont get me wrong, I love the way this pedal sounds now. I made the patches according to my needs and it sounds great. Though I am still trying to find the holy grail of the multi-effects.

It was roughly a plug in and play unit. It was a very user friendly effects box that was very intuitive to tweek the patches. I do have one complaint in that setting the volume to memory for each patch seemed to be impossible. It became cumbersome to adjust the volume level for every effect using the volume control pedal.

I think the concept was great. A longer loop pattern, and a seperate volume control (not gain control) for tweaking the patches, would greatly improve this unit. BUT FIX THE $#*$#!#"#> INPUT JACKS!!!!! Unfortunately a large portion of my playing through the unit is based on the single MAJOR FLAW!!!!

In terms of patches, ease of use is good. The manual is clear and editing easy. General usability isn't so strong. I don't like the way you have to press both pedals concurrently to enter bypass or mute modes. Very risky - can easily find yourself moving from a clean, low level patch to a full on overdrive just at the wrong moment. I haven't done it live yet, but it's an accident waiting to happen... The expression pedal does not move far enough, so using it for volume control or subtle control of FX mix doesn't really work.
The GFX707 is not good for use outdoors or under bright stagelights. You cannot read the LED display at all. I have constructed a rather sad looking gaffa tape and cardboard housing to shade the display, but it is not really satisfactory. For this reason alone, I will replace the unit as soon as I can. Having given these negatives, the unit is not particularly expensive, so I guess there is an element of "You get what you pay for" here.

Reliability
:

Yes, I rely on it, although with the plastic housing you need to be a little careful. I think the jack sockets are the weakest link. If they broke, the main board would probably be rendered useless. I do gig without a backup as I'd use the amp overdrive and reverb if it failed.

I was pleased with it when I purchased about 3 years ago - good price and sound quality. Reason for purchase was to replace my aging row of BOSS pedals and noisy patch leads. I would recommend it for anyone who wants to home record or play occasional indoor gigs. Main shortcomings:
1. Display unreadable in bright light
2. Bypass/Mute via 2 switches unwieldy
3. expression pedal insufficient travel to permit any real controlled expression.
Providing you plan to use it in the correct environment, this unit is a good buy in my opinion.

This first pedal also had menus that automatically turned themselves off and a Jam Play function that only worked once in a blue moon. So I sent it back, only to find that this model is discontinued, and the store I bought it from had none left, but after about a MONTHS moaning, they bothered to go get one from a store in the other side of the country. Finally got the second one today, hoping it would be fine, and guess what? THE PEDAL DOESNT WORK PROPERLY ON THIS ONE AS WELL! Incredibly dodgy pedal, would never use in a gig unless I had to.

Easy to edit, but a little difficult to synchronize it with the sound of an amp (speaking of a Fender '85 Combo).
Patches are, with a little practice, easy to handle, although you never get exactly what you want, though nice.
The manual is a little confuse at first use, but explains the patterns pretty good. Good for beginners, not recommendable if you try to use more than two effects in one song (during live performance.) I'd recommend a BOSS ME 1.
Sound Quality

I was using it with a Fender 85 combo and an Ibanez S-Classic, resp. an Epiphone Les Paul special. The presets are crap, because too crunchy for my taste.
If you are fumbling a little, you might get nearly to your favorite settings, I tried to figure some Sabbath and Maiden sounds, but it was not perfect.
The OD is quite good, the EQ is crap. Distortion can be very crunchy and hard, but the sustain is the last crap and it gets fuzzy after a while. Keep away from flanger, chorus and delay. The pedal is only usefull for the wah effects, although I don't use wahs.

Considering the last unit I purchased was a Rockman 10 years ago, I'm very impressed with this unit. I'm using this unit "line-in" with a Y-adapter to my multitrack recorder, or simply with head phones while I'm sitting around. I don't find it noisy provided that I balance the output. So far, I haven't tweaked the sounds, but since I'm generally able to find a sound I like, I'm sure that I can tweak them to get even more satifying sounds. I love the flange/chorus effects. Some of the patches are completely unusable for performance, but they will be erased and replaced by my custom patches anyway.
I personally love the combo A amp simulator. I find the stacks to be too mid-range boosted for line-in work.

Overall, I give this unit a thumbs-up. I've heard the some more expensive units and find the gfx707 to be a less expensive equivilent, minus lotsa extra params. I was tempted to buy a Korg portable unit, but found it hard to imagine using live, being there are no pedals to switch to and from. Having heard that the guitarist from Fuel used the gfx707 live gives me hope that it can be tweaked to a respectable sound. I'm suprised that it received such bad comments about it's distortion for it has many styles integrated within itself and from what I hear on the radio, it doesn't sound much different. But, then again, I'm not interested in paying 500 dollars for a sound if I'm only writing songs at home.

editing takes a bit of getting used to. this is quite surprising to me since i've had a zoom 2020 for quite some time before i bought this product. you'd think that the 707 would be as simple if not easier to edit than the older 2020. the knobs do make it easier to scroll through parameters though

Easy to use, but only once you know what your doing. The very good manual helps you on your way to programming it nicely. READ THE MANUAL, it makes things a lot easier. All the bits and buttons can be a bit daunting at first.

Most people in this forum are saying that the effects arent very good.
I have to agree, but they are definitlty good enough for any beginner.
Also, everyone is saying the distortions are horrible - NOT ENTIRLY TRUE. The people who say this have obviously not tweaked there machines enough. Some very nice, though noisy, distortions can be created.
There are also lots of other little effect: none which are great, some which are useless, but some which can be a bit of fun.
I give this 7 but only for the distortions (which I personnaly tweaked). If it wasnt for them I'd give it 5.

If you are a beginner as I was when I bought it, I suggest you at least take a look. I believe it is easily (from what i've seen) the best multi effects pedal on the market for its price, though I would suggest trying it out first. If your not into lots of strange little effects and want a great sound get singular pedals. The Gfx707 is not really a serious multi effects pedal but it gave me and my friend hours of fun when we were both beginners.
Try before you buy.
PS. The better amp you have the better this sounds.
For profesionals change this score to 5..

It takes a while to get a good sound from the 707, a lot of twaeking is required for the distortion/equaliser to get decent distorted FX.
easy to edit patches, the manual is helpful and clear except for the bit about the expression pedal envelopes, they use some daftarse diagrams that mean nuttn.

I use epiphone SG custom (3 humbuckers) i usually use it with all 3 to get a fat sound when using just amp distortion and FX from the 707, but when i use the distortion on the GFX it is best to use a trebly sound. I use a peavy 100w. I would give it a 9 for all effects except for the distortion which isnt good at all.
the zoom noise reduction is useful but sometimes it causes a big loss in sustain.

i would rely on this but i would only use it in an FX loop and use it for only clean fx, taking the distortion from the amp. this means if it suddenly goes tits up i can flick back quickly to the amp totally so it doest make much diffrence. I have used it for about a year and it seems to me pretty solid even though it is only made of plastic. The expression pedal, surprisingly, id solid too.

i play a wide variety of music. its handy because of the variety, the accoustic sound is one of the best ive heard and the phasing effect is good if used with amp distortion.
i been playing about 2 1/2 yrs.
i would buy a GFX-8 if it got stolen or snapped, its a little more money but more pro.

Ok i use a cheap strat copy worth #140 and some cheap ass amp. And I reckon my zoom gfx 707 stills sounds pretty kool. My fav sound is the V Halen one. I use that for playing the solo for 'One' by Metallica. Sounds quite like it to me. Autowah sucks. The pedal wah sounds ok. The unit does for what i need it for.

Well i dont know, ive only had it a week or so. like many people say it is plastic and ive never tried it with shoes on. Also the expression pedal sometimes stops working when I'm in the middle of a solo or something which would really suck on stage so Id use it but id only use effects where the expression pedal aint needed.

ok i play metal/grunge/indie. i have been playing a year. it is the only effects thingy that i own. id probably buy something else first or at least try a few similarly priced products first. i like some of the sounds, like echos and stuff. the sampler thing sucks rectum. i wish it had better wah and a better smooth distortion noise to sound like slash (guns n roses) or kirk hammett (metallica). well it helps me make music i guess, in some ways. I'd recommend it to a beginner like me but if u have more cash either buy separate pedals or a better fx unit.

As far sound goes overall it's total crap, the amp models are terrible, the distortion is terrible, auto wah is useless. I will say that the delay is ok though, not great just ok. I ran it through a line 6 2x10 spider on the clean channel only.

I play metal, classical, blues. I've been playing for 13 years on and off. I didn't play for a few years and only bought this thing because I needed something basic to get me back into playing. I wouldn't reccomend this to anyone thinking about becoming a serious musician. Since I started playing again I have fallen in love with the guitar all over again and have purchased a mesa triple rectifer a Jackson USA select soloist and a les paul studio gem with P-90's I learned that if you want to find a truly great tone you have to spend some money, but good tone is everthing.

It is rather easy to use. I bought it off a friend so I didn't get an instuction manuel. Patches-well, if I knew what a patch was and how to edit them, I would review those. The knobs turn easily and you can get some rather interesting effects. I think it is pretty good.

Personally, I really think the distortion is pretty crappy. I have another pedal for dist. so I use that. I noted interesting effects. I have found that the acoustic 12 string effect is a lot better than say a Boss acoustic simulator. If I really tried, I could get the sound of some of the good artists. Other than the distortion, I think the effects are really good.

It is dependable but since I can't edit it yet so it will take a while to change between effects. Since effects tend to get expensive, gigging without a backup is really a matter of weather you think you can do it or not. Personlly, I'd say yes.

For the style of music I play (metal, hard rock) I'd say yes. If lost or stolen, I would pay for a new one. This pedal has a lot of cool effects so you can really get some awesome sounds out of it. I do wish it had a better wah sound. This is the only effects that is worse than the distortion. Luckly for me, I have a wah pedal that compensates for the other. Like I said, overall, I'd say a decent pedal. By the way, if anyone has a copy of the instruction manuel, please e-mail me. I would like a copy so I can figure it out fully.

I play mostly fusion, jazz and funk, little rock and rarely metal, i would say the sounds work fine, even for jamming with friends or hell i use it for performances as well. Though the clean sounds are a little crappy i would say, even a 505 can give me better clean sounds. Others are great, with a few adjustments, of course.

Like i said earlier, i play fusion, funk, some jazz, rock and things like that and been playing for 4 years and owned this pedal quite recently. Stolen ? erm, GFX4 is my next choice. This pedal offers me very good tones and sounds, but i hate the clean tones really ! And the expression pedal is not up to my expectations. It did help me to produce some nice tones and was surprised myself that there is quite a smiliarity. :-) . I think it has a good price tag, and would recommend it for practice use or some small performances on decent music. If u play metal and all, you'll break it !

To get this pedal up and running the way you want it to, you absolutely MUST look through the manual once or twice. Due to the small amount of controls it has, tweaking effects gets kind of messy at times.

You can get some pretty good sound outof this thing. Butonly if you tweak the shit out of it! All the factory presets, like most pedals, suck a bit. But like I said, the right amount of tweaking and you're fine! Auto wah is garbage, and the fading effects aren't great. delay isn't bad. There are some pretty cool effects on the unit. It's not great for recording! a lot of hiss and stuff, even while on record mode. The amp models are crap! I play with an Ibanez RG270 with modified bridge and pickups, my practice amp is a Peavey Audition 110, on stage Peavey 5150 II. Through the practice amp... It sounds like shit for the most part... and well just about anything sounds good through the 5150II but this pedal still doesn't give professional sounding effects. The Zoom Noise Reducer (ZNR) (noise gate) works well. Expression pedal isa bit stiff but I think that's adjustable.

I play mostly Vai, Petrucci, Satch style stuff. This pedal is not too horrobly bad at mocking their sounds but for the most part this pedal is only good for all the basic stuff... If you want good sounding/crazy effects and hard ass ripping distortions and sweet and beautiful clean sounds.... Sorry my friend... This isn't what you're looking for!
