Easy to use. There are just two dials (Threshold and Ratio) and one switch (Over Easy) to worry about for most setups. It also has an Output Gain dial and Bypass and Slave switches for advanced configurations.

I'm running it in the effects loop of an Ampeg preamp. At low volume, it's completely transparent. I can switch bypass on and off with no difference in sound. At high volume (i.e. above the compression threshold) it does its job of lowering the volume with no noticeable change in tone.
Note that I'm running a line level signal into the unit. You don't plug a guitar directly into this compressor.

I use it in a bass rig. My soundguy loves it because he can raise the overall bass level in the PA without worrying about me overdriving him when I dig in.
I bought mine used on eBay. DBX does not make this model anymore.
It has advanced features like Slave Mode and Output Gain that I don't use. I just run it in the effects loop of an Ampeg preamp.

Compressors don't get any easier than this. The basic controls offered to shape your sound are all you need to get perfect results from this compressor every time.

The 160X has been my primary studio tracking compressor for roughly the last 17 years. I love it. I wish I could afford four or five more. I would replace it in a heartbeat with another 160X or 160A if anything happened to it.
If you need a clean, transparent, general-purpose compressor, you won't go wrong with a 160X. They continue to retain their value after all these years (which is why I can't afford four or five more!) But that should tell you something about these units.
The Alesis 3630 is good, but they're not in the same league as the 160 family of DBX compressors. The $$$ you'll pay for a 160X, even if used, is worth it.
