Ease of Use : 10
Simple stereo (linkable) or two-channel independent mono channels with bypass and a "Quieting" knob for each. This is the "single-ended" (doesn't encode/de-code) noise reduction module that can be plugged sideways into a dbx FS900 frame. It can be switched between balanced and unbalanced operation via an internal jumper. Designed for reducing tape hiss when transferring, you just patch in the signal and dial the knob until the noise is reduced. Mine came in a frame with a 902 de-esser.

Sound Quality : 8
It works like a multiband compressor by lowering the level of a frequency band when the source drops below a given (unspecified) amplitude. When the signal increases past an unspecified threshold in that band, it ducks out of the way. Therefor, it works much better on constant-level noise (like tape hiss) than it does on periodic noises like, say, record pops or clicks (which can make it '"pump"). It has a sound of its own, but I like the way it sounds better than the digital noise-reduction software I've used (particularly Ionizer or Ray Gun) because it doesn't create any digital fizzle artifacts. It does cut high frequencies, of course, so at higher settings some noticeable dulling will occur. Very useful when digitizing two-track reel-to-reel tapes.

Reliability : No Opinion
This unit came from a commercial studio and it seems to work like new.

Customer Support : No Opinion
The 929 is currently out of production (mine was made in 1995), so I doubt you'd get much support.

Overall Rating : 8
I'm using it mainly for transferring archival tapes of classical music to the computer for editing and further "restoration", though I did have success recently with a 78 rpm vinyl record transfer, as well. It provides an easy method of reducing noise, thereby improving the overall sound quality. Being not completely transparent, it's not perfect, but since I use it all the time I must like it pretty well.
