This bass was made by my friend Greg Yancey in Austin, TX. The bass was completed in February, 2002. It is a set-neck, 36" scale 6-string fretted bass, 24 frets on the lower 4 strings, and extended to 26 frets on the high G and C strings. The bass has a bookmatched bees-wing bubinga top, with a center bookmatch of ziricote. between the two are bocote stringers. The body is ash, and the top and body are separated by another bubinga laminate. The neck is 5-pieces: 3 ash, 2 bubinga. The fretboard is ultra-clustered birdseye maple. The headstock matches the fretboard. Hipshot tuners, Hipshot aluminum bridge. Bartolini soapbars. 5 knobs, 1 switch: push/pull (active/passive) master volume, pickup pan, bass, mid (with frequency selector switch), treble. The bass has a lacquer finish.

Sound : 10
This bass kicks the low end, and rings the bells of the high-end. The bass has a bit of a darker tone, but still punchy, and it still has that "spit" tone found in the pluck. I use it with an Ampeg Billy Sheehan preamp, and Ampeg PRO cabinets. The pickups run silent, even at big boost levels. I have yet to record with the bass, but I used it on a large house system, and the head engineer was totally inpressed with the quality of both the highs and lows through the system. Not a dead spot, ot weak note on the neck.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Greg sets the bass up with super low action, which is cool and very fast. He is an electrical engineer, so his basses are always righ on with the wiring. With my first bass he was more experiemental. This bass is more cut-and-dry in the electronics. Everything is top-shelf.

Reliability/Durability : 10
This bass turns heads, as do all of Greg's basses. The bass has graphite bars reinforcing the ash neck, so truss rod adjustments should be few and far between. The finish is lacquer, which Greg says never finishes drying...constantly hardening. So if anything, the bass should start to sound better over time. The key though, is the ash...this bass is super light!

If you know Greg, you know he's on top of things. Having worked with him on 2 projects, I know for sure that he'll be where I go for basses from now on. He's always open to help me with my basses, and always eager to help keep them in the best condition possible. I encourage you to check out his work and email him.

Overall Rating : 10
This is my 9th year of playing, and I've owned a bunch of basses--and still do. I almost never play anything but my two Yanceys. They are both irreplaceable. Greg would be just as hurt as I if anything happened to either. He has a real connection to his instruments, and you find that in the character of each bass. They are amazing guitars. The next bass on the agenda hasn't been given too much thought. Perhaps another 6-string, but all MIDI, no magnetics at all. Or, perhaps a tenor bass, with piezos and nylon strings. If you have any questions or comments please say hello!
