Features :
Bartolini 89CBJD neck and bridge positions - 5 string, hum canceling jazz pickups. 9V, active / passive Sadowsky preamp with vintage tone control.

Instrument :
These pickups are installed in a Sadowsky Metro 5-string--swamp ash body and maple fretboard--both neck and bridge positions. I replaced the stock Sadowsky jazz pickups. The Sadowsky pickups are great, especially if you are a slap player. But I'm primarily a finger-style player and they seemed a bit dry for my taste. Of course tone is always a subjective area when it comes to basses, but nonetheless.....

Sound : 10
I had my friend Mike Lull install the pickups for me. The tone of these Bartolini 59CBJD's compared to the Sadowsky's to me are the difference between black & white TV to color TV. Even thought the Sadowsky's have a nice tone, the Bart's are far and away a smoother, warmer sounding pickup with great dynamics and banalce. The bridge pickup has just the right amount of Jaco bark, and the neck pickup is warm and smooth. You can REALLY get a great upright tone with it when you move your right hand technique over to the end of the fretboard.

Overall Rating : 10
I've been playing bass for about 15 years, but I've been a guitar player since I was eight. I'm 58 now. I've always been partial to the warmth and balance of Bartolini pickups and have them installed in all but three of my basses. If these were lost or stolen i'd get another set in a New York minute. I give these a 10 on the tone scale and would recommend them to anyone considering replacing their current 5-string jazz set. They are hot enough to fill the bill in passive mode, and with a good preamp they just kill!

Sound : No Opinion
Perceived output level: Comparing to my all active Ibanez it is hotter with active EQ, but about same in passive
Tone: Great bass, solid mid and slightly hiped-up high end, enhanced highs they say.
Sonic evaluation: I use custom built amp, basically Custom Special

For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Good Jazz, rock sound a little much going on for funk, but if you are tapping this is killer pickups also harmonics are really nice.

Overall Rating : 9
Comments: Overall I am happy with these, but it is a bit of a one trick pony, they do couple of things really well, but I would look at getting another type for variety may be PJ from EMG to complete the package.
