I was unimpressed with these using the stock roundwounds this bass came with. They sounded OK, but were not very impressive. Since I was on a flat kick at the time, I tried a set of Carivn flats (which are very good strings, btw). This totally woke this bass up and improved the sound immeasurably! It was like night and day. Deep lows (that were lacking) and still pretty punchy up on top. I usually get compliments on the tone whenever I gig with this bass. No way I would have even bothered to gig with it the way it sounded with rounds. Before you s*@t can these P/U's, try a set of flats. You might actually like the way they sound!

I might actually use these as replacement P/U's in another bass, as the price is right. Then again, I have had really good luck with Bart's and would pay the extra $$ for those. If cost is a consideration, give the Carvin's a try (if you like flats).

Comments: Been playing for 20+yrs. Just like to try everything. I think almost evryone changes these pickups out of their Carvin basses. They sound very clear but generic. They are not especially responsive to dynamics or touch, not punchy, not deep, they pick up a lot of finger noise and they don't blend well when combining pickups(probably due to the stacked humbucking design). I guess I should say something nice too, they don't buzz. I tried several different replacement pickups and they all sounded better but thats' for another review. I've heard better pickups in cheapo Jay Turser basses.
