Model of guitar or bass: Squier JV series 1983
Position: middle
Pickup being replaced: Gotoh P bass replacement
Other pickups on guitar: none
Artists using this pickup: Billy Sheehan
You musical style(s): Billy Sheehan
Reason for pickup change: Wanted Billy tone - harmonics galore , tremedous punch and mid power

Sound : No Opinion
Perceived output level: much hotter than stock pickup or gotoh replacement - loud!
Tone: all round spectrum of frequencies with maybe added mid bite
Sonic evaluation: Squier Pbass - fantastic quality although a little beaten up now....
Practice amp Boxer 30 Trace Elliot

For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Rock, Billy Sheehan style. Great pickup - Instant Mr Big minus the talent :)

Overall Rating : 10
Comments: The only bass pickup I would consider to get the Billy tone. Well balanced string response - major sustain. Using with 500K volume and 250K tone.

Features :
Pickup features: Hum Cancelling, Four-Wire connection for Series/Parallel
Impedence or other specs: DCR=11.45k

Instrument :
Model of guitar or bass: Fender 2001 MIM Precision
Position: middle
Pickup being replaced: Duncan SPB-2 Hot for P
Other pickups on guitar:
Artists using this pickup:
You musical style(s): Blues
Reason for pickup change: Did not like the previous Duncan SPB-2 at all. Also wanted the Series/Parallel wiring scheme.

Sound : No Opinion
Perceived output level: Very high output
Tone: Big bottom, clear, even, aggressive, *** NO THUMP ***
Sonic evaluation: SWR IOD bi-amped with Rane balanced signal processing, DBX 120a sub-synth, QSC PLX 3002 power amp, multiple 15" true subs for Lows, JBL E110s for Highs. This is a full range, HiFi bass rig.
I gig constantly and my P is my main player. I flirted with a Duncan Hot P (SPB-2) briefly and took it out. The tone was not for me. The DP146 was the replacement. I wired it for Series/Parallel mode, which adds a useful 2nd tone in Parallel mode.
I like everything about the DP146 except it has no thump. Like the Duncan SPB-2, it is a hot output pickup, which all seem to have no thump. As to "thump", I mean the fast attack and decay that makes a P with TI Flats sound almost like an upright. The stock MIM pickup had lots of thump, but it was bland sounding, and I was GAS'ing for a pickup change.

For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Blues. Tone dimed, or tone zero'ed depending on the tune.

Overall Rating : 10
Comments: I like everything about the DP146 except it has no thump. The four-wire setup is standard DiMarzio, and lets you wire Series or Parallel mode. Each pickup half is separate, and comes with sufficient wire to do the job. This is a nice touch. Quality is top notch in all respects. You will need foam to cut and fit, to make the pickup reach the correct installed height.
The only negative to this pickup is the lack of thump.
The 10 rating is for top quality and four-wiring installation.
