Reason for pickup change: Stock pickups were extremely noisy (60-cycle hum and high-frequency feedback); also wanted more of a throaty, jazz-style tone.

Perceived output level: Higher than stock p/u (hard to say; bass has an active pre-amp)
Tone: good overall spectrum; lots of low mids and bass, but notes are clearly defined
Sonic evaluation: BBE 383 preamp, 1000 watt Carvin power amp, Eden 410XLT cabinet

For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: These pickups are best for any style which requires that you compete with loud guitars. Solo tone is a bit rough, but sounds great in mix with a rock, metal, or loud blues band. Might not be as appropriate for a smooth jazz, pop, or easy listening type of sound.

Comments: My other bass is a custom 5-string with EMG soapbar pickups. It has a sweet, hi-fi tone that sounds great in some applications, but tends to get lost in the mix with a loud band. The DiMarzio's give a much different tone which is better suited for other applications.
Overall, I'm quite satisfied with this product. I had an idea of the kind of tone that I wanted, and these pickups came very close to it. I would definitely consider buying them again.
