Features
:
Pickup features: Passive side-by-side humbucking
Impedence or other specs: Don't recall, they're on a par with the stock pups.
Instrument
:
Model of guitar or bass: Fender MIM Deluxe (active electronics)
Position: middle
Pickup being replaced: Stock (both positions)
Other pickups on guitar:
Artists using this pickup:
You musical style(s): General stuff
Reason for pickup change: Bridge pickup was dead, decided to replace the set. Wanted something middle-of-the-road.
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: Almost identical to stock
Tone: Rounded, a little indistinct. Definitely not snappy or boomy.
Sonic evaluation: Using direct into Tascam digital multitrack and into a Fender Bassman 25 (solid state) for practice.
These definitely don't excite me, and the vintage J-bass sound isn't really there, but they're very quiet, and they give a rather good all-purpose sound, which was what I was after. Be prepared to tweak the EQ.
I wanted to stay away from hot pickups due to the active electronics, and stay away from single coils due to my current noisy environment. I wasn't looking for a vintage sound, and hey! I didn't get it. :-)
If you're looking for vintage J-bass sound, I'd go with the Antiquities or Fralins. These are well-built though and , the adjustable pole pieces are a good thing to have on a less-expensive bass like the MIM.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: For general playing, they're a good match. If you're into bright poppin' and snappin', you might want something else.

Comments: If I lost these, I might get something else, just for variety. I'm mainly a guitar player, and I use the bass for laying down bass tracks for recording and just for fun.

Features
:
Pickup features: Passive, medium-output split-coil humbucker in J housing
Impedence or other specs: 200 mV output
Instrument
:
Model of guitar or bass: Fender Jazz Bass (Mexican)
Position: neck
Pickup being replaced: stock pickups
Other pickups on guitar:
Artists using this pickup: No major ones
You musical style(s): Modern rock, fusion, metal
Reason for pickup change: The stock pickups on my Fender are tinny and have a hum
problem. These fix both of those problems.
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: About the same as the stock pickups, maybe a little less output
Tone: Not much high end, but a big bottom and a lot of low mids--sort of a Jack Bruce type of tone
Sonic evaluation: I run my Jazz into a Carvin PB100-10 combo. These pickups are noticeably smoother than the stock ones--the highs are very rolled-off, and for a good slap tone I need to engage my EMG BTC Control preamp and boost the treble a lot. However, for rock, they're awesome. They're also whisper-quiet; any hum will be a result of bad cavity shielding and not the pickups themselves.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: These pickups work very well for hard rock, more subdued jazz (as opposed to super-snappy fusion), and metal. Soloing the bridge pickup and backing off on both treble and bass gives a hollow, throaty tone that would work wonders for a fretless.

Comments: These are a nice change of pace. With EQ, I can get a good slap tone, although it's more old-school than can be had from more modern pickups with lots of treble. (Think Larry Graham, as opposed to Flea.) For a 1979 design, they've aged well.
I was considering getting EMGs, but wanted to be able to go passive for bigger booty. Bartolinis are difficult to track down, and based on Bass Player's J-pickup shootout I decided to go with these. The big bottom and thick low mids will really help in my next gig, a modern rock band with two guitars, a loud drummer, and a keyboardist. Now to get that bigger amp...
