Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: It runs a pretty high output, you can plug headphones right into the bass and hear just fine.
Tone: To me the output is pretty balanced, maybe slightly flat.
Sonic evaluation: Right now I'm running a vintage Randall head throught an Acoustic 4-12. It's a very high output bass now, as I've wired in an 18V power supply. I run the volume and tone(passive controls, though the p'up is active) wide open and I barely have to do any tone shaping. EMG is right when they say that this is a very "classic" sounding pickup. Those of you looking for a more "modern" tone may not like it as much. The sound is not at all sterile or brittle, and has a freight train's worth of midrange to it. It kind of reminds me of The Who or BLue Oyster Cult in terms of tone, especially through the 12's. Standard P pickups probably have a tad bit more bottom end, but this still has enough to make me use an 80hz filter. I think this pickup sounds great on a fretless by the way. This is the 3rd type of EMG bass pickup I've ever used, and will probably be the last of any pickup I ever buy. Eventually I'm going to get around to building a 51 P-Bass with one of these in it.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play oldies, rock and roll, classic rock, bluegrass, ska, classic country, blues, Irish, and heavy metal(the iron maiden, judas priest, slayer variety).

Comments: I am planning on using this pickup in the next bass I build
I've been playing for about 15 years.
After getting this pickup, now I just need some custom amp and cabinet work done.
