Features
:
Pickup features: Single Coil w/ Humbucker structure, Active
Impedence or other specs: N/A for an active pickup
Instrument
:
Model of guitar or bass: Ibanez SR-05
Position: bridge
Pickup being replaced: Ibanez stock low-impedence single coil J (with a dummy coil below)
Other pickups on guitar: EMG-40J also
Artists using this pickup: I think Sadowsky using them on his Modern Jazz bass.
You musical style(s): Rock, Fusion, Funk
Reason for pickup change: Annoying noise from original preamp and pickups. The stock pickups' tone were not punchy enough for my taste, though.
I want my bass sounds bright and clean with a lot low-mid punch.
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: Quite high, I can plug in the mixing console directly without any DI. EMG said it's peak voltage is about 1.25V.
Tone: Very trebly, with focused low B. The string balance is good, but I think it's a little bit weak aroung A string.
Sonic evaluation: Alembic F-1X preamp goes to Marshall 9200 power amp, with Hartke 410TP 4x10 + SWR Basic Black 15" (bypass the pre and power section of SWR). The bass is an old Ibanez SR-05 5-string, ash body, maple neck and rosewood fingerboard.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: It's best suited in 90's funk, like Wooten or Oteil Burbridge's sound. Quite sharp and cutting in the bridge position, and deep enough in the neck, if the position is right.
Overall Rating

Comments: I've modified my trusty Ibanez since I had enough money to hot-rod it. I installed a Bartolini TCT preamp first, not quite impressive. Replaced the old pickups with EMG-40P+J, not good enough though, especially for that very sharp trebly sound. Installed a 2nd hand EMG-BTS treble-bass preamp later, and the sound that I imagined appeared finally. The last modification of replacing Master Volume - Balancer to Volume - Volume let these monsters screaming out. (the balancer is 250k-250k, not suitable for EMG...)
The sound is pretty trebly, but with enough bass and low-mid to cut through heavy guitars. It's easy to get that 90's funk sound like Victor Wooten, and can get that vintage Jazz's growl if the position is right. I reversed the whole pickup last week to let the sensing area was away from the bridge further. and the soung change was dramatic. Suddenly, I can make an EMG sounds like a passive bass!
Comments: EMG is a very good choice if you want your bass sound clean, punchy and without any noise. The only notice needed is choosing the correct pickup position, and using the suitable pots (EMG needs 25k audio taper pots).
