--Excellent active replacement set. Apparently EMG shoves a tiny little circuit board under each pickup that vastly augments a fairly weak magnet system. From what I can tell this allows them to completely re-tailor the sound, and WOW they did an awesome job. Freq. range available is wide. You can't individually adjust bass and treble but their stock internal settings are extraordinary. It is possible to "over treble" the system. I back down the tone dial to ease off on the bite, and all other freq.s aren't affected. Emg advises using two 9v batteries for best output and yes this is really nice--they both fit well under the control panel

New output is quite steep--as with all active systems use the active input on your amp if such is available.

I've had my EMG J set installed for one month. Instalation was really easy--the include everything--even knobs and jack! EMG's are a bit on the expensive side.

Technically it's EMG-J Set. 2 J pickups (Neck and Bridge), 3 pots (Standard volume neck, volume bridge, and tone) wired with mounting harness for the pickups, battery clip. At first glance, the electronics look like a passive J-bass but with a battery. Designed to be a simple replacement for Jazz basses. No ground needed.

:
'92 Fender Jazz Bass. The pickups being replaced were stock. I wanted to try EMG's on this thing but didn't want to take off the stock pickups, until they rusted.

Being active, the output obviously went higher. The sound is basically similar to stock, but much cleaner. Great lows, thin nasaly highs, everything you'd expect from traditional J pickups. The big plus to the EMG-J Set is the loss of the buzz when the volume knobs are offset. When backing down the tone, it still has a good quality of tone, not the standard dead flat sound.

It was briliant of EMG to offer this as a set. I've also had EMG DC35's, and P-J sets (with different preamps). If you're looking to clean up a J-bass, this is definitely the way to go. Other alturnatives would also require alot more wiring (if you're going active) and would cost quite a bit more.
