Don't buy these if you got an old Jazz bass!!! I've had Seymour Duncan's, DiMarzio's, and EMG's that fit perfectly in my bass (68 Jazz). I bought a set of Fender SCN's and guess what??!! They don't fit. They are about a 1/4 inch too long!! I talked to Fender tech support and the only answer I got was "they are what they are". How can EMG, DiMarzio, and SD get it right and Fender can't even come close!! What about the guys with old bassses that want to upgrade their pickups??

Put this in a new custom built 5-string bass per customer request. The construction quality on these pickups stinks, plain and simple. One of the wires had already become unsoldered straight out of the box, and two of the others fell off during routine handling (pre-fitting the parts into the cavities, so I had to re-solder them back on. The neck pickup is dead; I've tested it with a multi-meter, and as nearly as I can tell, it must have a break somewhere in the windings.

I wish I'd been able to talk my customer out of this one. Now I'm out a good chunk of change because I've got to buy replacements, and these 5 string versions are a different size than comparable 5 string Duncans or other reputable brands.

Fender SCN (Samarium-Cobalt Noiseless) Jazz pickup pair. Noiseless single-coil neck and bridge pair.
Instrument
:
Made-in-Mexico Fender Fretless Jazz bass. Alder with rosewood fingerboard. I use Fender flats (9050???s) for a nice thumpy tone with a strong fundamental. Amp = GK RB400 1 x 15. The stock pickups had a decent vintage tone, but were just too darn noisey. They were not even hum-cancelling with both pickups on, like American Jazz basses. The SCN bridge pickup is a few mm???s longer than the stock Mexican pickup, so the body cavity needed to be routed out slightly. The neck pickup is slightly narrower than the stock Mexican pickup, so if you don???t want to see gaps between the pickup and the pickguard, buy an American Jazz bass replacement pickguard and you???re all set. That???s what I did. Neck pickup fit like a glove. Although my Mexican Jazz bass needed modification, I believe these should fit a Fender American Jazz bass perfectly.

These pickups are perfect for me and my bass. I???m shooting for a vintage tone with a percussive thump (no metallic twang) and a strong fundamental. The SCN???s prehaps sound just a touch more modern than the vintage noiseless, but they work for me on this bass perfectly. The very slight extra bite in the high end gives this fretless bass with flatwound strings just a little added presence. And they are truly quiet. I can actually turn up the treble on my amp now without sounding like a nest of hornets. Everything is better than stock with these pickups. The Jaco tone with the bridge pickup is much more full. The neck pickup gives a stronger P-bass tone than the stock pickup. With both on, the sound is pure R&B. This is the tone I???ve been searching for. I don???t slap much, but I???m willing to venture that for players who use round-wound strings and frets, these pickups will give a little more snap than stock Mexican pickups. The seem to have a slightly wider-than-vintage frequency response, but don???t get me wrong, the classic J-bass tone is still there.

For my bass and my tone, the sound is a 10. They are a little bit expensive for mass produced pickups though, although I got a good deal from Darren Riley???s Guitar Shop, Raleigh NC ($129.95.00 for the pair plus 6.00 S&H). Fast shipping as well.

these pickups have a very modern/bright tone with a slightly muted high end which gives them a nice "click" when playing slappy style bass lines (almost compressed in the high end). not really bassey, but these sound great! this pickup can be harsh if not eq'ed right. i give a little bass, cut a little mids and roll off the highs just a hair and then smooth tones come through. i play funky bass lines in a professional variety band that plays everything from elvis to madonna and lots of r&b + funk & disco: san diego's rodney & co. variety band. and these pickups sound great, especially through big sound systems (what does'nt though). I actually replaced these in my fretted bass and put in my fretless - incredible in a fretless as the natural warmth of a fretless with these modern sounding pickups makes for a fretless that cuts and has punchy midrange.

now, here is the bummer - i ordered these and when received, the bridge pickup had a loose winding causing the instrument to have issues. sent back to dealer and they sent me a new pair a month later with now a dead bridge position pickup. finally, after sending to fender, i got a good pair after groveling and finding receipts, etc... so i gave them a 5 for this
