Features :
This is about the MFD pickups that are commonly installed on the L-2000 G&L basses. I'm using them (2) with the same set-up as on these basses, which is active (one 9v battery) with the G&L preamp electronics harness.

Instrument :
I installed them on a MIJ Fender 51'RI P-bass in the same position as they are on G&L basses. Routing was required for both the pu cavities and the electronics harness/battery. The P-bass came with a vintage style single-coil pu which has it's charm, but is of limited tone and has that annoying single coil buzz. I wanted the same bass (look and feel) but with Leo's state of the art sound; transparent, diverse, rich and when not being played-silent. Had to make a new pickguard in the style if the 70's Fender Tele bass to mostly cover the electronics harness. Could have created a cover just for that as the pu routing was clean and didn't really need surrounding. More of a design choice here.

Sound : 10
Output level is very high. I own a Kubicki Ex Factor w/ an 18v preamp and it is in that league. I understand the G&L preamp drains the (1) battery quickly but I'll find out later. The Kubicki's system (2) batteries last a long time. I play through an SWR SM400/Goliath II (4x10) and MXR d.i.+ and use medium GHS Progressives. Overall, tone is very clean and punchy but I figure you could dial in most any tone you need. Double stops/chords translate with clarity and definition. I play a whole range of music and regardless of style, I want the bass to sit in the mix so it has physical presence, definition and a quality of tone. Dialing the controls maintain these prerequisites while achieving a particular sound related to that particular music style. As far as suitability, I can't imagine that to someone somewhere, any position could be unsuitable. Maybe I won't use every potentially possible combination of settings, but is that really an issue? (as in, too many options?) If you like your bass controls basic (and there's nothing wrong with that!), this set-up is probably not for you.

Overall Rating : No Opinion
Destroyed or stolen... don't want to go there. You know, why tempt fate?
I've been playing since 1964. I own a few other 4 string electric basses, fretless and fretted, active and passive. Also have a Polytone Mini-Brute (1X15) and a battery of effect pedals.
Love? Hate? I express myself through my basses, they are my creative medium. They are all unique and each have their own way of translating sound. I don't get much of a chance to compare other products. I chose the G&L L-2000 system because a friend has an 81' (passive) L-1000 and I loved his tone. Very Fender. The active L2K system in a classic Fender 'body' is now that and more for me.

Comments: If I were to lose this guitar I would definitely replace with another G&L. I've playing on and off for several years - I have had a peavy p bass as well as a yamaha bbg4s jazz rig and beleive me this G&L blows them away - also in the same price range as Fender the big difference is fit and finish and quality the G&L is by far better. One of the things that I love about this bass is the selector of active or passave - great feature.
