Features :
Standard replacement for a J-bass pair. If anything slightly shorter than other equivalents, which worked really well for my 1996 Mexi Jazz bass with two identical pickups/routings.

Instrument :
1996 Mexi jazz bass. This is the one with the single P-bass style pickguard in mother-of-toiletseat single ply plastic.
I was upgrading to try to take it to US standards... using all GFS stuff - tuners, bridge, scratchplate and so on.
The original pickups were really badly corroded but sounded ok if a tiny bit lacking in definition at the low end. As the guitar now looks like new this has worked... sounds better too.

Sound : 10
Output is considerably lower than my P-bass fitted with a 20-year old Di Marzio P, on the other hand the tonal range is more precise... I like the colouration of a P-Bass but these GFS are very neutral and have very very good clarity, especially at the bottom end. Have to adjust the amp volume if I switch between basses in gigs.

Using with a Hartke 2500.

Bridge pickup excellent, though better with the top rolled off if solo'd, if the treble pot is turned up then needs some mix of the neck pickup or can sound dry.

Both pickups together have a nice almost phasey sound (yes I did install the pickups the right way round). The Bridge pickup is like a P-bass but with a crisper bottom end and more even, neutral tone. Sounds excellent finger style.

I play all kinds of music, through retro to punk, latterly more of the latter. With my modified P-bass and my modified J-bass I am covered for anything, have even been leaving the Ricky behind...

Overall Rating : 10
It was a toss between a Bartolini 9SU and these. As I had to shave the casing a little (but only a very little) to get them into the two identical routings on the early mexi bass I decided to use the GFS ones and not immolate the Barts, the GFS ones were a better fit all round for this conversion. If someone managed to get the pickups out and run away with them I'd certainly do the same thing again. I have GFS pickups post-installed in my telecaster and 12-string, and they're standard in my Xaviere hollowbody.
I love Di Marzios for bass sound and would keep them in the P-bass.

I was looking at Fralin pickups, but the price was too much.I decided to try the GFS pickups, the price was low.Very satisfied with the difference over the stock Fender pickups.Fender should consider making these their stock pickups.Very easy to install. This was a set of two pickups, direct replacement for the Fender jazz bass.
