Features
:
This is a 6 position (5 plus bypass) varitone that is essentially a radical tone preset device. All passive with quality capacitors and chokes.
Instrument
:
This was put on a highly modified Epiphone EB-3 which had 2 Hammon Engineering Darkstar pickups installed. This works real well on the instrument and gets the basic sounds I want without even messing with the remaining tone control on the bass wich covers the pickup mix. Very straight forward and easy to install.
I put it in as I wanted to do something all passive yet not lose the kind of tone shaping commonly associated with active electronics. I am very pleased with the results and the people I play it with like it as well.

This is a great tone shaping device that ought to work well with any bass pickup. FYI, he's got a guitar version that would satisfy the guitarists wanting a similar tone shaper.
I have played it through a BBE bass preamp that goes directly into a giant house system. I have played it through an SWR Redhead combo and was impressed as well. What we are talking about is the ability to quickly nail perhaps half a dozen tone vibes without resorting to an active circuit. Also way cheaper than an active circuit too.
I am a very eclectic player and having such variation instantly allows me to cover a bunch of styles with one bass. No need to carry multiple basses.

I am sold on this device in this context. It works well and when a new bass is built I think I may go passive with Stan's circuits instead of doing active stuff.
I have been playing close to thirty years. It is nice to rediscover the fun of a purely passive bass. It also is nice to find stuff that does so much, is executed with this kind of quality, and is so inexpensive for what it does compared to the active circuit alternatives.
Stan has all sorts of parts and components as well as pickups that are very nice. For an extra 10 dollars you can go with Orange Drop capacitors. At what would be then $39.95 it would be stupid cheap for what it does.
