Features
:
Single coil pickup set for J bass. The pickups are hum-cancelling so they are dead quiet when both are used, even when one pickup is used the noise is almost imperceptible. The magnets are made form alnico 5, the wound is tight and clean, the pickups are heavy in comparison to my standard ones (IMO that???s a sign of quality). I will give them a 10 in value since I paid 149.00 USD for handmade pickups which quality equals or exceeds Aero, Lindy Fralin and surpasses the quality of the machine wound ones (you their names).
Instrument
:
I installed the pickups on my 90???s American Jazz Bass, I changed the pickups because I wanted more variety and more clarity. Installation was a breeze since Stan uses vintage cloth covered cables, you don???t have to peel the cables to install.

The sound these pickups produce is certainly more hot, diverse and harmonically rich. With a little turn on the volume or tone pots you get different tones. When I first plugged my bass with my old pickups settings a speaker almost blew up (they are not called Hot J Set for nothing)!!! I used to run my Jazz Bass thru my GT-6B equalizer to compensate for the lack output and upper mids, with these pickups that is unnecessary. One of the good things about these pickups is that they don???t turn your bass into an alien creation, I can hear the tone of my bass thru them, the pickups only added a broader palette of tone, clarity and harmonic richness (just want I wanted).

Stan customer service is second to none, although HAS Sound is operated only by him. He answered my questions promptly and clearly, his product is great and it was delivered promptly. I even ordered a harness for my P bass and other components form him since I liked the service so much. If you want great pickups that won???t turn your bass into a mutant thing, built with great quality and excellent customer service don???t hesitate to buy form Has Sound.

:
Single coil, passive jazz bass single coils.
Neck 7.8k ohms, bridge is 9.2k ohms. Alnico 5.

I put the Hot J's in a Fender Marcus Miller Signature Jazz replacing the stock pickups in order to tame the treble caused by lack of passive tone control.

The pickups are quite hot, and the tone is clear and defined. The lows are deep and growly and the overtones are crisp and clear.

Anyway, I opted for the Hot J's to tame my favorite beast, my Marcus Miller Jazz which is a bit zingy in the top end without any sort of passive treble rolloff. So some hot pickups, in theory, should take some zing off the top and tame the beast a bit. I discussed the possibility with Stan of possibly overwinding and he basically replied saying that these are quite hot already and should do what I'm looking for. I'm glad I listened to his advice.
First of all, the product presentation was phenominal. I was expecting to wait a few weeks for the pickups because (I believe) they're wound order by order, and mine being free, I wouldn't expect them to be any sort of priority. I was surprised one day when I got a box I couldn't figure out what it was, picked it up and lo and behold it was from HAS Sound. Boy was I happy to see this. In the big box was a tshirt and a tiny little white box marked Hot J set. I open her up and there's a buisiness card, a bag of height adjustment screws, a promotional pick, foam for supporting the pickups, and lastly, two pickups carefully wrapped in foam sitting neatly in the bottom. Once I saw how much care he put into packaging the things, I knew they were going to be something really special.
Installation was a breeze, just needed a screwdriver and a soldering iron (Stan uses vintage style cloth covered wire which can be pushed up and doesn't need to be stripped like a plastic coated wire) and took about 10 minutes. I screwed the pickups down and unfortunately stripped five of the eight screws that came with the pickups. Luckily I had spares because I was way too excited to wait for some new screws to arrive. Once I got everything settled down into place, I plugged in and was blown away.
Stan's Hot J set is tonally very rich across the frequency spectrum, with a hint of treble rolled off to achieve aural bliss. The fundamentals were deep and throaty, and the overtones were rich and sweet. I took the bass from a burpy walking line to a smooth, sweet improvised solo at the 12th fret by changing nothing but my right hand attack and the pickups were right along with me showing no weaknesses.
NOTE: Stan includes a Zap Strap kit with every purchase showing concern for our safety. I did not use this at this time but might install it in the future.
