Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: A bit more than stock, but not hot. Pretty average I would say.
Tone: Real clear and piano like. Balanced and smooth. Seems especially good for fretless since it's very accurate. However, they are not hum free. They are hum reduced, noise is still there depending on your environment, but certainly a level you can deal with.
Sonic evaluation: I've used this with my practice amp at home (Hartke B2) and a big stack at the rehearsal studio (Peavey Mark III head and Hartke cabs) and like the sound. My guitarist complimented me on the sound. It's a real clean sound, but will allow you to get some growl especially when you go with the bridge p/u only. Still has enough power to cut through. Not as thumpy/boomy as P-bass.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Good for Rock, pop or jazz. Not sure how much it would be for funk or slap as I can't do that well on the fretless anyway

Comments: I had heard good things about the Dimarizo J-Bass set, but opted for the Lace since I have Lace's in my telecaster guitar and really liked them. I also like that there are no pole pieces since I play with my fingers and the flat surface creates less blisters. Definitely a huge improvement over the stock pickups and I'd get them again, especially on a fretless. On a side note, for those of you with MIM Jazz basses with equal size pickups, although the lace set is unequal size (bridge is slightly bigger, as normal J basses are) they fit in my MIM J bass without any modification.
