Output level seems slightly more than stock. I use this bass primarily with SWR amps but on occasion I'll just go direct.
The tone is amazing- vintage sound all the way. These pickups allow for a fantastic level of articulation- in other words, they make me sound waaay better than I did with the stocks. I'm a Nordstrand fanatic now. I use these pups for my university's jazz band, various rock projects, and church groups- they sing beautifully in all areas.
These probably wouldn't be the right one's to buy for anyone playing metal or thrash- like I said before, these aren't the hottest pickups out there.

I received EXTENSIVE support from the company in my search for a pickup- these guys are great.
My only wish is that they offered their pickups with closed casings (so as to cover the poles) like Kent Armstrong or Bartolini's.
Next, I'm gonna replace the stock pickups with a Nordy in my fretless sterling

Perceived output level: Slightly higher than stock Fender pickups
Tone: Very balanced
Sonic evaluation: The bass is alder with a rosewood board. I wanted a vintage-sounding bass and I got it. I have an Aggie DB 659, SWR 750 power amp and 2 Aggie GS 112 cabinets and I play through a lot of other amps at jam sessions. The pickups brought my bass alive. Terrific tone (if maybe a little more clear-sounding than old Fenders) and I have no complaints.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Suitable for anything requiring a vintage Jazz tone.

Comments: It was either the Nordstrands or a set of Fralins. I had no experience with either one so I rolled the dice and tried the NJ4s. I will say this: My search for pups for this bass is over.
