Features
:
Pickup features: Humbucking in Jazz bass cover for five and four string
Impedence or other specs: Active with volume-balance-bass-treble and pull switch to give special fretless contour.
Instrument
:
Model of guitar or bass: Custom Jazz Bass with solid Rosewood neck
Position: neck
Pickup being replaced: EMG active
Other pickups on guitar:
Artists using this pickup: Steve Bailey
You musical style(s): Jazz, pop, blues, occasional funk
Reason for pickup change: The usual musician's search for the freakin' grail tone.
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: A bit less hot than the EMGs they replaced
Tone: a bit warmer and did the low B better. May have been attributable to wider string sensing width as I was running the ragged edge with the EMGs.
Sonic evaluation: I have been using it mostly direct into the PA. The folks at the board and a fellow bassist who gets to hear it in the house love it. When I am running it through my Redhead or Boogie, it is very nice and smooth.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: This is a very good jazz pickup as in the style. Fretless kind of defines or limits the styles you play it in. It aint a heavy metal pickup, but it does work very well for popping funk.
Overall Rating

Comments: Very nice package setup. Clearly engineered as an assembly and it shows. The contour switch on the pull pot is very nice and does nail what I want for a fretless sound. I have found the deal and would want to stay with it.
