Features
:
Single coil, passive pickups.
Wound to the same spec that SD rewound Jaco Pastorius' early 60's pickups from the famous "Bass of doom" fretless.
Instrument
:
1975 Fender Jazz Bass. Neck and Bridge positions, replacing Duncan SJB vintage pickups (Originally installed to replace the stock Fender item).
I've never been satisfied with Fender pickups (unless they were genuine L series or pre L series), finding them to be flabby, dry, lacking in presence and having poor string balance.
After searching for years, I came across the SJB vintage pickups, by far the best on the market at the time until the Antiquities were released.
Sound
:
10
Output is slightly higher than the SJB's (which in turn, were slightly higher output than the stock fender pups).
Have been used with a variety of amps but currently Ampeg SVT2 Pro's, a very good match.
A big, full bodied tone, very even and balanced.
Brash enough to cut through distorted guitars and retain clarity and sweet enough to sit behind a spul Diva if required.
Very versataisle pickups.
Overall Rating
:
10
I already own three sets of these pickups, (My P bass has an Antiquity 2 Pride fitted.) I've heard great things about Fralin pickups and the EMG JV set but until I can do a direct comparision, its a case of "If it aint broke, dont fix it."
I spent a lot of years searching for the best vintage passive fender sounds, the sounds that I've heard in early 1960's Fender Basses are the sounds I aspire to.
I'm the closest to "That sound" as I've ever been with these pickups.

Comments: No complaints at all. I had read that they might not fit directly into the MIM cavity (the neck, anyway) but they went right in, easy install. I would totally use these again. Been playing about 13 years. Great value and pretty inexpensive way to really beef up your tone.

Features
:
Pickup features: Passive Single Coil
Impedence or other specs: I know they are different than each other...
Instrument
:
Model of guitar or bass: American Jazz Bass Standard
Position: middle
Pickup being replaced: Both Stock P/Us
Other pickups on guitar:
Artists using this pickup: Was said that Jaco had a set very similar
You musical style(s): Americana or loud brit rock. I guess you can call it white-boy rock!
Reason for pickup change: Stock P/Us were very thin sounding and didn't produce much warmth.
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: The output more than the stock P/Us.
Tone: The tone was more bassy and balanced. It definately was a better tone altogether.
Sonic evaluation: I am very pleased with the tone and power these P/Us offer. I use a SVT II all-tube head and a SWR 8x8 cab and wanted my bass to provide a gritty jazz growl with deep, balanced power. The stock P/Us didn't offer this tone. After researching Bass Player Magazine's Jazz Bass Replacement P/U article, they really gushed over these. They were right. Very balanced tone - the high notes come on just as strong as the low ones. I don't single out the P/Us, so getting 60Hz hum is never a problem. I like to adjust the tone (just treble cut) and P/U knobs when setting up in a club and then leave them alone for the set. My primary bass is a Les Paul Standard which came with TB P/Us and a Bartolini three-band EQ. The LP has a very thick, muscular tone that is awesome and really needed in one of my bands (with two very loud guitarists). The other band I play in has a little more room for bass articulation and therefore I wanted this jazz's tone to shine. Duncan described these P/Us to be the sound of a well-used 60's bass, and if this tone is like the old basses out there that sell for a mint, then I can see why. They have great character.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play both finger-style and with a pick, but am phasing out the use of the pick...
Overall Rating
:

Comments: I would probably get these P/Us again if I had another modern jazz. Been playing ten years and great tone is important to me. Nothing more annoying than crappy bass sound (other than a terrible singer). Happy with them so far!
