Features :
Pickup features: Dual-coil passive humbucker w/ceramic magnets (pickup only; no preamp)
Impedence or other specs: The dealer had the specs in their catalog, but Seymour Duncan doesn't publish them elsewhere.

Instrument :
Model of guitar or bass: ABC Systems solid aluminum neck-through bass (17 pounds!). 34" scale
Position: neck
Pickup being replaced:
Other pickups on guitar:
Artists using this pickup:
You musical style(s): aggressive/abrasive rock
Reason for pickup change:

Sound : No Opinion
Perceived output level: Since this pickup was intended for use with active preamps, the output is low (similar to a mid output passive J pickup).
Tone: Low coil winding count makes for a very balanced frequency response. The resonant peak is fairly high and broad without being too pronounced. No particular note or frequency stands out.
Sonic evaluation: Since my bass is made entirely of solid aluminum, most of the difference in tone and sustain is due to the mass and stiffeness of the metal. Keeping that in mind, I could tell distinct differences between the Basslines pickup and a stock Musicman pickup.
The pickup is mounted 5.75" from the saddles to the middle of the pickup. This placement is much bassier than the typical Stingray placement (closer to the bridge). In split mode (one coil on) the tone is similar to a J neck pickup except that it is much more aggressive. In parallel mode the tone is definitely Stingray but more open in the highs. In series mode the output is too high for my use and there is a distinct peak in the upper mids. I generally play in split mode; if I want more grind I switch to parallel.
I play through a Basford 100 watt tube amp (check harmony central for a review soon). I like a little bit of overdrive which requires a bass tone that can cut through the overdrive with clarity and definition. This pickup definitely does that job very well.

For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable:

Overall Rating : 9
Comments: I have been playing guitar for twelve years and bass for much of that time. I am a very picky perfectionist about all aspects of tone, playability, and sound quality. In addition to my ABC bass I have a Travis Bean and a Kramer metal-neck.
This pickup definitely has the tone I was going for. The only complaint I have about the pickup are the polepieces: The spacing of the polepieces is a little too wide for my bass; the E and G are not centered over the polepieces and tend to dropout (distort/compress) when picked hard. The polepieces are also staggered for the radius of the Stingray fretboard. The fretboard on my bass is completely flat so I had to grind the polepieces down to match the outputs from each string.
I think the Basslines pickup would be a great replacement on a Stingray for players looking for a more open character that the stock pickup. My complaints about the polepieces wouldn't be a problem on the Stingray.
I am going to try a Bartolini MM pickup since it appears that they use full length magnets instead of polepieces. This should take care of my E and G dropout problems. I only hope that I can end up with the same basic tone that the Basslines pickup has given me.
