Pickup features: Single coil passive
Impedence or other specs: ???
Instrument
:
Model of guitar or bass: Fender Musicmaster
Position: middle
Pickup being replaced: Stock
Other pickups on guitar: none
Artists using this pickup:
You musical style(s): Average rock and blues
Reason for pickup change: Stock pickup was blaaaah!
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: Noticeably higher than normal, but not super hot
Tone: kinda muddy but balanced
Sonic evaluation: Fender Musicmaster '78 thru a Kustom KBA 80- I bought this pickup becuase the original pickup in the musicmaster was a strat pickup with 6 pole pieces! I guess Fender used them to save money.
This SCPB-1 is designed as a replavement for the original P basses and the tele bass, but it does shoehorn into the Musicmaster if you flex the pickguard a little. I was hoping to get a more distinct bottom end than the cheezy guitar pickup it had. I don't think I was very successful. My bass is louder and has a fuller sound than before, but the bottom end response is kind of muddy and just generally lacks clarity.
In their defense, Duncan doesn't list this pickup as a Musicmaster replacement, and I know that short-scale instruments are notorious for lack of low-end response, but I was really hoping for more of an improvement that I got. In retrospect, I wish I had ordered the hotter SCPB-2 or SCPB-3 instead.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: It sounds like a country music bass.

Comments: If I had it to do all over again, I definitely would try the hotter versions of this pickup and not the 'vintage' one I bought. I don't want to speak poorly of it because I bought it to use in an application that the manufacturer didn't intend it for. It may sound great if installed in an old Tele bass, but it didn't help my Musicmaster as much as I had hoped
