Pickups replaced EMG Silver Jazz Bass

I built a Jazz Bass using MIM Fender parts for a friend last year. When I was finished, I was blown away by the sound of these pickups. I raved about them so much that this year here got me a set for Christmas. I took the EMG's out that I've had in since the '80s and never looked back.

Sound : 9
These pickups have tremendous output. I have a P Bass with SPB-3 quater pound pickups and the SJB-2's have as much output. It's a Jazz Bass sound with an attitude. If you're looking for punch, these pickups have it along with great tone.

I use a Hartke HA 2000 head with a Hartke VX 1508 cabinet.

They have a great well balanced tone. I don't get the reviews that call them muddy. These pickups have great tone and a truck-load of output.

I play Rock, Pop, Jazz, Funk and blues.

Overall Rating : 10
If these were destroyed, I'd cry. If someone stole them, I hunt the mofo down and beat them about the face and head. In either case, I would definately buy these pickups again.

I've been playing for about 25 years. I've built all of my own basses. I have a 6 string Warmoth Gecko bass with Seymour Duncan ABS-2's, a custom built MIM P Bass with SPB-3's, a custom built '62 Jazz Bass, Behringer Bass V-Amp.

I love the tone and killer punch.

I'm very satisfied with the sound of these pickups.

Features :
Pickup features: Single coil passive J-bass
Impedence or other specs:

Instrument :
Model of guitar or bass: 2000 MIM Fender Jazz
Position: bridge
Pickup being replaced: Stock
Other pickups on guitar:
Artists using this pickup:
You musical style(s): Punk, metal, classic rock
Reason for pickup change: I wanted to change them.

Sound : No Opinion
Perceived output level: Hotter than stock, not as much as a stock P-bass, though
Tone: bassy, can get muddy
Sonic evaluation: Using a Fender Jazz bass with steel roundwounds thru 2 Ampeg B3158 combos. Sounds very good with a band. Has a lot more bass than stock. It does cut through with the right EQ settings. It can get muddy without some added treble dialed into the amp. They sound good for my pick/finger playing. It got me the tone I was after. Think of Matt Freeman from Rancid with more bass.

For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Works for punk and other types of rock, being a Jazz bass, is going to be versatile

Overall Rating : 8
Comments: I'd get these again if they were stolen. I've been playing for 2+ years and have a P-bass and a guitar. I like the tone of them. They are the same price as other pickups. Installation was a bit hard on my older model, because the bridge position had to be routed out a bit.

Instrument :
Model of guitar or bass: custom
Position: neck
Pickup being replaced:
Other pickups on guitar:
Artists using this pickup: nobody and there is a reason for it!
You musical style(s): fusion funk jazz
Reason for pickup change: Wanted a good slap tone

Sound : No Opinion
Perceived output level: This is a very loud pick-up thou the SJB-3 model is the same but even louder.
Tone: The tone is full of high lows making it quite muddy. You can't really hear the high notes at all. Slap sound really terrible!
Sonic evaluation: Hartke + Trace-Elliot

For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play fusion funk jazz (whatever that is?) and the pick-up doesn't suite it at all.

Overall Rating : 5
Comments: The reason I wrote here is because I want to warn everybody not to buy this pick-up. The only use for this pick-up might be for a rock player who never goes up to the G-string. I have to admit it gives nice bottom end when playing with a heavy guitar. But remember you can't really go over the first octave. I've had this pick-up for about a half a year and I bought it from a catalog not knowing what I was about to get. If it stopped working I would just leave it there I use the bridge pick-up all the time anyway, if the pick-up was stolen I would give a good laugh to the person who stole it and be glad that I got a reason to buy something else to replace it.
