Reason for pickup change: Wanted something hotter with more definition, and inexpensive
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: Slightly hotter than stock pickups
Tone: I was pleased with the tone. It has better high-end definition than the stock pickup, so you can hear the grittiness or growl of the bass cutting through. The old pickup was all mud.
Sonic evaluation: I have not tried it through a bass amp. I use it with a Johnson J-Station and its bass amp modelers, as well as through a headphone amp and my monitors. For $30 (incl. shipping) I am very satisfied with the improvement over the stock pickups. For under $200 the Affinity P-Bass with the Selects sounds better in my ears than the MIM Fender P-Bass at ~$350 (the Affinity still has inferior hardware though)
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: I play mostly modern rock, but I don't play bass as my main instrument (only use it for recording)

Comments: I think this is a solid option for low end basses (under $300). This was my first attempt at changing a pickup and I must've soldered a wrong connection because the volume knob no longer works correctly, but the sound is full and defined so I can't complain. It should be suitable for most types of music, I think it's less ideal for jazz because of the extra grittiness that makes it stand out in the mix
