This review is for the SMB-5A Alnico magnet, Stingray5 replacement pickup. In and of itself, it is a passive pickup, although it is usually used with an active preamp.
Instrument
:
I installed this in a '04 5 string Stingray, with a maple neck. Replaced the stock ceramic pickup.
I changed the pickup because the stock model doesn't sound like a Stingray. The stock pickup, is a 5 string version of the Sterling pickup, not the Stingray!! No idea why?

I didn't notice any level change, but the tone is much better. It now has more of that Musicman growl.

I've been playing bass for almost 25 years. I own heaps of great gear, including a '93 4 string Stingray, a couple of Jazz Basses and a Precision. I mainly play through an Asdown head and a Hartke 4x 10" cab. It still doesn't sound the same as my 4 string Stingray, but I assume that is because of the wider pickup and neck needed for a 5 string.
