Artists using this pickup:
You musical style(s): blues and R&B
Reason for pickup change: I didn't like the stock pickups.....they had a tinny or trebley sound that I didn't like.
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: Pete's pickup has a definite higher output than the stock p-up.
Tone: Nice warm and clear tone through out and good growl on the low end.
Sonic evaluation: I play through either an ampeg B-115 100 watt combo, or a '73 Bassman 100 with a 1x15 cab with an EV B15 speaker. Even though my Am. Std. P-bass sounded ok through these, the sound has really improved with Pete's pickup. I can even hear the difference through my 30 watt Behringer practice amp.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: blues and R&B
Overall Rating
:
10
Comments: I love these pickups and Pete is a great guy. I cannot say enough about him, the products he makes or his service. All you need to do is tell him what you want and he will come up with it. I recently purchased a '51 MIJ p-bass reissue and I will be having Pete make a pickup for this bass as well. You cannot go wrong with a Vintage Vibe pickup.

Comments: I love these pickups and Pete at Vintage Vibe Guitars is a great guy and provides exceptional service. In the near future, I plan on having him make me a pickup for a 1951 precision reissue that I recently purchased. He is more than willing to make you whatever you need or want.

You musical style(s): Rock and Roll
Reason for pickup change: that bass always played good but never sounded great. I had Pete make me some tele pickups and install them and they were the bomb so I asked hime if he could make these and he did.
Sound
:
No Opinion
Perceived output level: I requested that Pete make them a vintage type output, but not weakened magnets..
Tone: Clear but not shrill, warm and blended but not muddy.
Sonic evaluation: My bass amp is a 100 w solid state ampeg combo. I am mainly a guitar player, but I record my own music using this amp and bass with an audix kick drom mic (D4) and a sennheiser 441, either in combination or one or the other. Have not recorded with the new pickups yet, but it sounds so much better than before, I can't wait.
For which styles and positions is this pickup (un)suitable: Great P bass pickups. I play country and rock and roll. I guess it's not suitable for those that prefer active electronics that sound like a synthesizer, but you could pull off about anything with these pickups, because they have such a good voice.

Comments: I have played for 20 years, sometimes with serious improvment curves, sometimes flat. I am really into the sound of fender instruments and making all these wonderful sounds (like chicken picking and clawhammer blues and just sounds that you can get out of fender guitars and amps.
The thing about Pete is that he is an exceptional person. He is very smart and very thorough. The pickups are very well made. He put some type of shielding plate on the back of the pickups and it is a much higher quality assembly than the fenders that were on there. The new ones sound like a 60's P- Bass, very clear and a little throaty, and they project a little resonance. There are so many different types of sounds people crave, if you are an expert and want to work with Pete. he will do whatever you want. I just asked Pete for some good sounding P-Bass pickups to regular output specs and he came up with these things. He gave me one more chance at a "hot" set because he made 2 sets while he was at it, but I stuck with the vintage sound, I am really happy. I want to characterize both sets of pickups I got from Pete as "understated" but when I play through them, they always have just a touch more sparkle than I remember. I am not going to give a numerical rating to these pickups, because everybody gives a 10 or a nine or whatever if they like the pickups they are reviewing, but rock and roll music is so important to me, and Pete's pickups and Pete himself are in my guitars, these go to 11. I'm not qualified to guess what you might think. These guitars have changed from things I struggled with and picked apart to extensions of myself. My search has stopped on this bass and my tele (although I would like an early 'nocaster' too for that bassy neck pickup I am sure Pete could do that too), but I'll never look back using Pete's pickups and I am proud to have them in my fender guitars even though I am usually anti-hot rodding. I usually say if you want quality, buy it stock, but really a mexican fender product (especially the newer ones) coupled with a genius like Pete is a different story. I am not going to replace the pickups in my strat which has fender custom shop texas specials, because that guitar sounds really good, but no sooner would I swap Pete's for a fender product, they are noticably different, and both sets I bought from Pete for 2 totally diferent guitars have a similar voice.
