Sound without amp is real good - so basics for a good sound are there.
(I always listen to the sound of the wood first - if it doesn't sound good You can't use it - electronics will only hide that)
With the original pickups the sound is limited, the blend pot is like an on/off switch so there's not much versatility in sound.
The pickups sound very MM-style with strong mids but no dead G effect that MM's often suffer from. It cuts through every rock or metal guitars with ease. IMHO very good for rock/metal but not jazz or other kinds of music.
I replaced the PU with a Bartolini MMC5 and now it sounds real great and has everything You need for all types of music without losing that MM-sound. I'm thinking of an active preamp (bartolini 3-band).

As I bought it used I can't say anything about it's original setup. But at the moment the setup is perfect.
The Aslin dane's neck is very good for people liking thin JB-style necks. That was the main reason I bought it. The action of the 35" neck is a little bit higher than my other basses and maybe difficult for beginners. But I like it that way.

It's built very solid and will withstand live playing and rough handling on stage with ease.
The hardware is solid too. The only thing I replaced are the pot's.
They are a little bit scratchy.
I have no doubt this bass will last as long as my others.

I'm playing bass for 30 years almost every style (Bigband, Blues, Jazz,Fusion,Progressive,Pop,Rock, Metal).
I'm playing 2 jazz-basses (1973 Ibanez w.EMG's and Claim custom made fretless w. Seymour Duncan) and a Steinberger 'teethbrush'.
I play them through a 'Glockenklang Bass Art' top w. 2 H+K 2x12+Horn Cab's.
The Aslin Dane is my first 5-string and I like it very much. With the Bartolini it's almost as versatile as the JB's.
Compared to a MM Sterling 5-string it performs well or even better when it comes to low B because of the 35" neck.
I'd replece it with the same model (maybe with another 35" or more bass) if it were stolen.

Five string bass, made with quality wood body made of basswood and neck Canadian Maple. I will be honest I have only been playing bass since I bought this one, but it is really nice, quality workmanship and good sound. My fiancee, who knows a lot more about basses because he is a professional musician says it gives really great sound(especially for the price), and is a great replica of the musicman I got it with a nice gig bag.

The attack is very good, sustain is warm. Overall resonance is very clear. Easily handles everything from bright funk to bassy jazz. Very little pickup noise (if any).

When I first got the bass the fret board was separating from the neck, BUT, as it turns out it was just because UPS had dropped it and I was able to return it easily for a new one. Action set a bit high, but preferable for slap.

It really seems like it will last a long time. The fret board is a nice defense for the finish. On the whole it really seems to be a solid bass that is very durable, and even in the short period I have owned it I have put it through quite a bit and it still acts and looks brand new

I have been playing for 3 months, I would definatly buy it again. My only real problem is that as a new beginner the higher action is quite a challenge because my hands aren't strong enough to press the strings down
