Features : 10
I've been a bassist for 50 years, and I've owned basses that range from crappo cheapies to major manufacturer's classics (still have my 64 "P" bass.) My Birdsong Fusion ('07") is now my favorite workhorse. The balance is wonderful, the feel of it is organic and natural....a walnut wonder! I'm not a hardware freak; if it plays in tune, then the bridge and tuners are great. This one is great. The finish feels soft and "feminine;" I've named this one "Precious."

Sound : 10
I play a number of styles of music, and "Precious" fits them a;;. I normally use GK amps;
either a 700 head and a box witj one 12" or a GK Baline with a single 10" in it. Too old to schlep big amps around, and I also go direct to the board via a direct box.
I string my basses with Labella Nylon Tapewound string for a sofet, jazzier sound, and for ease of playing. Have done so ever since I found nylon tapwounds decades ago. I had to "convince" Scott to put them on the bass....I sent him a set, actually. With these strings on it my bass sounds rich and full bodied. I don't do much in the way of "twangy" bass sounds, but I can heat is up easily by tweaking the amp's mid and treble settings.
There is absolutely no noice at any setting!!!!!!! Even the in-house sound people at the major festivals we play love it because it doesn't sound like anything but a bass.
I don't use effect, and see no reason to use them. The Birdsong IS the sound. Why mess with it? It ain't brile, so I won't "fix" it!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The finish, like I said before, is soft and almost sesnual to the touch, like stroking your beloved. The olny alteration I made was to install straplocks on it instead of the strap holders provided by Birdsong. I've had too many basses head south, so straplocks are a must for me. My Birdsong came perfectly set up: I took it out of the box, made sure it was in tune (it was) and headed for a gig. The pickups were voiced wonderfully. Scott and I spent a lot of time on the phone talking about the sound I wanted. I got it, too.
I left setting the action up to Scott at Birdsong. He likes a medium-low setting, and I agree. Haven't change it.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Would I use this bass without a back-up? Yes, but I always take a back-up......my OTHER Birdsong....a Corto Basic I got from Birdsong just before I got my Fusion. The "Basic" is voiced hotter than the Fusion, and I sometimes switch basses to get a sound that suits the tune better. Mostly, though, I use my Birdsong Fusion.
We do a lot of shows every year.....about 130 or so...and we're on the road a LOT. This bass has seen and done it all over the last couple of years.
I'm not an equipment ot techno freak.....just gimme a bass that playes well, stays in tune, and fits ME. I'm a little arthritic now, and the shorter scale makes it easy to get through a series of road shows pain free.

Customer Support : 10
Never had to get it repaired. Can't remember how long the warrantee is because it has never been an issue. I have talked witj Scott occasionally, but just to "schmooze"

Overall Rating : 10
Like I said at the very beginning....I've been a bassist for fifty years (I'm 63), and I finally found MY bass. The only thing I could wish for would be another bass or two from Birdsong.
I wil say this.......the waiting period was long-ish....eight months a couple of years ago...might be longer now......but I bit my lip and held out for it. I just hope they don't get over-grown and screw up what they've got.
I know it probably seems unreasonable for a line of basses to get all "10s" in catagory ratings. Not this time. These are terrifit instruments, and they've earned their high ratings.
I have had as many at fifteen basses at one time (sold off seven of them, though) and it was alsways because I was searching for the one special bass that fit me, my sound, and my music. I now have TWO Birdsong basses, and don't use anything else. That should tell you something. If you are looking to look or sound like your favorite bassist, go get something else.......these aren't for you. If you want to make YOUR music with YOUR bass..
they're with the ait and the money.
