Features : 8
Made in japan around 1980-84.
22 frets, 4 strings. 34" scale (some claim this bass to be 35", but not mine anyway -I measured it carefully!)
Solid-body, i think, It has a black finish and a black pickguard.
The neck is bolted to the body, and there is no heel. Despite this it sits nice and tight and its easy to reach the upper frets.

The body has it's own shape, a slim and light design that slightly reminds of a shrunken fender that has had a bite taken out of it. The upper horn is slightly longer and the output is on the rim rather than on the front of the body

The pick-ups are a passive p/j couple, but there is a separate tone and volume control for each (4 knobs) this means that you can, for example, dial in all the brightness from the P-mic and roll it off from the j-mic at the same time. There is also a three-way selector switch, if you want to silence a pick-up completely.

The bridge is a string-through body of Daions own design. Daion also made their own tuners.

Sound : 9
It sounds Hollow, as in "it has resonance". I play Jazz with my wife and punk with my current band. I have also used this bass for 80's alternative rock and reggae. It can go from a deep rumble (solo neck p-up and roll of all the treble)to a biting treble-filled sound (solo bridge p-up and ,you guessed it, let everything through the filters) It has a great sustain as well! The original pick-ups were worn and unreliable (te bass is over 20 years old and it had been stored in a garage...) so I have upgraded to seymor duncan basslines. I am very happy with them!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
I bought it second-hand with no strings, but I never had to tweak the truss-rod, the neck has always had a perfect shape. There is one point where I am plagued by fret buzz: the 19th fret on the G-string, but the buzz came after I lowered the action myself. I never go that high so I don't see the need to remedy this, but it could be done.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I've had it for over 10 years now, it has recieved it's fair share of abuse but it's still easy to play and the finish looks good.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Daion doesn't exist anymore :(

Overall Rating : 10
These basses are hard to find, but when you find one they usually go for very little. Daion apparently nurtured the naive notion that you could sell by just putting out great products without marketing them.
