Its a 2000/2001 Dean Edge q5 Quilted Black top. 4 knobs, active pickups 35" scale. Very thin neck. It was a gift

I play country gospel and classic rock. I played it through a 1968 Fender Bassman and a 1972 Bassman 10. Through the Bassman 10 it was amazing. Very deep lows, and Chimey highs.

The finish is awesome. I put one ding in it... and It was a hard hit. My fault. THe hardware is black, and solid. However, the Electronics decided to die. It will run full volume or hiss and scratch and cut in and out, I have had it checked, and it is the circuit board. I don't know where to get it fixed, but I would love too. When it worked, it was a 10. as it doesn't I will be critical.

I own way to much gear. As this bass was free, I can't complain. I would love to replace it, or get mine fixed. I love the thin neck for a five string, and the deep tone. I usually play 4 strings, I have two old Peavey Dyna Basses, with the super Ferrites, a Peavey t 45 that will break your back, Musicman Stingray that is my Favorite,a Peavey Rudy Sarzo that should be my favorite, and a Fernandes LEB-j4 that is a hunk of junk. I have been playing for 10 years, and this is a great 5 string when it works, as I am sure they do not all have problems, I will give it a 10, if it works.

I play in a few bands and this bass has a sound for every style i can think of. Playing heavier stuff i can get a really low rumbling and punchy sound out of it. Its great for faster, more punkish playing aswell which is where the great tone comes in handy. The edge Q5 provides a smooth, cool sound when playing blues. I'm still experimenting with different settings etc at the moment but from what i have found so far, i can't make this bass sound bad.
At the moment i am using (in the way of amps) a Torque T1001EB bass amp. This may not be the best amp in the world but i can only imagine what this bass would sound like through a more expensive model. In the way of effects I am using a Boss Bass Overdrive Pedal for a great fuzzing sound. No complaints with the sound but i havn't had the bass very long so i may find something wrong with it.

Before this bass i have been playing a precision and so wasn't too sure what to expect when it came to action on the new Edge. I was pleasantly surprised. The action needed now ajustment whatsoever as it enables smooth, effortless playing. I found no problems with any oxidized hardware and as far as i can tell the wood and general quality of the bass is superb.

All of the hardware on this bass seems rock solid and so im not expecting to have to adjust or replace anything any time soon. I have experienced, with past basses, that it is very easy for manufacturers to cut corners with such things as how solid the strap buttons are, this will show if you try to put a thick leater strap onto the guitar. But when i went and bought a good quality strap there were no problems, well in.
As for backup basses when playing, i would be more than confident, bassed on the craftsmenship of the bass, to play without a backup, however the only reason i would have a backup onstage is my fear of string breakage- down to me not the bass.

I'v been playing for about 3 years now, aswell as this bass i own a precision and an acoustic bass. I also played nearly every kind of bass i can think of before buying this one so it beat everything else i played. The dean gives me a completely different feel than the other two i own. I played my friend's Edge Q6 before buying this one just to get a general feel of the bass. I would also recommend the Q6. I can't say that i hate anything about it, but one thing i love about it is how confortable it is, i could play for hours with this bass.

This is a Korean made Dean Q5 fretted 5-string bass. 2 EMG-HZ (soapbar) pickups. Quilt amberburst w/ black hardware and grover tuners. 35 inch scale; rosewood fingerboard.

I have been able to dial up a variety of sounds with this bass. I play through a G/K 800 RB (head). My cabinets are: Peavey 210 TXF and Peavey 410 TX. To me, the sound is kind of sweet and piercing similar to a Ken Smith with the soarbars. In fact, I believe the Dean Q5 is the workingman's version of a high end Ken Smith.
It took a long, long time getting used to the narrow string spacing. Not a very good bass for slapping. But for fingerstyle, I don't think you can get a better bass in this price range. And I have played many including the Schecter Elite 5, Peavey Grind and Peavey Fury, the Spector Euro-5, Fender Deluxe and Ibanez BTB and SR series. The Dean stands up to them all and is better than most.

Action was a little high for me when I got it. I asked my tech to take it all the way down. Then, it was too noisy for me. We raised it (just a little) and then I was on my way. Haven't noticed any problems with the pick-ups, the frets, nut, bridge or even the cable jack. Everything seemed to be fine and has worked well.

NO PROBLEMS. It stays in tune pretty good. I have played it mostly in church but it has survived several 2,3 and 4 hour gigs as well. It did slip out of my hand once and hit the floor while I was trying to put my strap on. Still, I played the whole concert with no problem. Needless to say, I have outfitted it with straplocks since then. :>)

I am a converted vocalist/keyboardist. I am a certified music instructor and have worked in the field of education for 10 years. My music experience covers over 20 years. I switched over to bass about 3 years ago when our bass player (at church) moved to another city.
As I stated earlier, I have played other basses in this price range and the Dean stands up to them all. I am currently looking to up-grade to a higher level bass; A Warrick Corvette or a Sadowski Metro. The ONLY reason I am looking for another 5-string is because I want a more powerful instrument. THAT'S ALL. The Dean (so far) has served me well. When I get the high end 5-string, I plan to buy a Dean Q6 since the Q5 was so good. Great job Dean!

I like the sound for anything really, including slap. Ummm, the only negative thing i can say is that the two humbuckers in the middle pan selection do not sound very good compared to the bridge or neck solo'd. One gripe bout the sound though, the Pickups are not Paraffin soaked so they are slightly polyphonic, so, they are noisy, but if replaced from stock, it'd not be a problem.

The setup on any new bass sucks. I had to spend a good 2 hours with it till I got it the way I wanted. But this is not unnormal for any bass.

Ok, here is where i start griping. The first thing that broke was something wrong with the electronics. Something like the pickup somehow came out of humbucking, couldn't figure it out myself had to take it to a shop. $20. Then, the jack broke the third arm that grounds the negative of the battery, so, back to the shop for a new Jack. $20. Now, after all that, it's starting to drop signal randomly for no reason, and I can't figure it out, so I've given up on trying to fix this one.

This bass is made to ROCK not made to slap, which is why the string spaceing is narrow. If a person wants a good bass to slap around, go buy a Stingray. This bass is all rock and roll.

Factory set up is close to my likeing. all I really had to do was tighten the truss rod, lower the action a bit, and throw on some Dean Markley Blue Steal's. I rate this a 9 becasue for an average set up, it's damn near perfect. I just usually tune to nothing higher then to D.

My Dean Edge Q5 bass was made 2000 in Korea. It has 24 jumbo frets on a rosewood fingerboard, basswood body (of 3 pieces) with a very nice looking quilted maple top (mine has a translucent red finish on it, looks great!). The two pickups are passive EMG-HZ humbuckers. The electronics are active with a 2-band-EQ and a pickup-mix control. Good playability, also for short fingers, because the neck isn't too wide and the string spacing is narrow (15 mm at the bridge). The Grover tuners are very good, and the bass stays in tune very well! Especially the high D and G strings will NEVER get out of tune!

I've used this bass with several different amps (Warwick, Peavey...). I have to say the sound isn't good at all, it is very DARK. It is impossible to get a crisp, clear tone out of the bass - the pickups do not produce many highs (even with fresh strings). The lows are muddy, especially on the low B string. As if this wasn't enough, there is a hearable humming always. The variety of sounds is small - in every EQ setting the sound stays dark, muddy, muffled and without highs. When only one of the pickups is selected, it becomes hollow.
I wouldn't say the sound is terrible, but it is really not good at all.

The bass was set-up at the factory with an uncomfortably high string setting. One of the control buttons was loose and got lost. The bass didn't contain any other serious flaws, though.

The durability is bad. The strap buttons aren't solid, one has ripped its screw out of the wood, leaving a hole in the body behind. The control buttons are loose, one did fall off and got lost. The pickups are a little loose. At least the other parts of the bass don't fall apart;-)

I have a 6-string RBX6JM from Yamaha and a Fender Precision Bass, and played many other basses. The Dean Edge Q5 looks really great with its quilted maple top, but it sounds poor and shows a slight tendency to fall apart... On the other side, it stays very well in tune and has a good playability. Perhaps it would sound better with better pickups... No one knows.

The first comment from everyone who sees my bass is about the finish. The quilted top looks sweet and I ordered it in blue...it looks like ripples in a pool. The hardware is black, at first I wanted to order chrome replacements, but the black has grown on me. The 35 inch scale really tightens up the low B...that was probably the key selling point for me. My previous 5-string was an Ibanez 305, it wasn't a bad Bass but the B string was nothing but mud. The EMG's sound great!

I get great tone out of my bass. I'm not sure of the make of the strings that it came with, but they sounded ok. I threw on a set of DR highbeams and got a really sweet tone. I play hard rock and it's got really nice punchy lows. I also tune down a whole step and that's where the 35 inch scale really makes the difference. Just goofing off, I tuned the B string down to a G and it really didn't sound too bad. I play my bass though a GK 1001RB and a GK 410RBH on top of a GK115RBH. Thus far no one has been injured by this setup, but I did shake an empty keg off of a bar and onto a case of beer (sorry Lindsey)

The action on my bass was a little high when it came in so we lowered it, intonated it and it was good to go. The pickups sounded great, but made a slight pinging noise when I played slap. We fixed that with two packing peanuts under each pickup. The finish...I could go on for days, I LOVE IT!!! The hardware is solid I wasn't sure on the color at first but like I said before, it has grown on me.

I've had it just under a year and have had no problems. I play pretty much every day and I've only changed the battery twice, they really seem to last a long time. I use it for gigs, and right now it's my only bass so it has to do...and it does.

I have been playing for 9 years now. I've had a Steinberger, a cheap Fender Jazz Bass, An Ibanez 305 (my first five string) and now the Q5. My next bass is going to be a Stingray 5, but I have no plans of getting rid of the Dean. I am going to be replacing the bridge with a heavier one other than that, I like it just how it is. My rating may seem high, but I'm basing it on other basses in the price range. Of course it isn't a Pedula or tobias, but for the money it would be hard to find better.

First I would like to slam Lyndon Carters review it sounds like he is totally biased to his geddy lee bass guitar. you know this is the submission where he gave all 3's and 4's. I found his input completely hopeless, first he complains that the spacing is to tight and he cant slap, then he complains its too wide and its a log. Let me say I have played over 20 years and this is one of the best basses for the money that you'll ever spend. No its not a modulus or pedula bass. but its 85% close without paying 300% more.

5 string active. Transparent black (gorgeous!). Black hardware, light fingerboard. Soapbar pickups. I particularly like the 35" scale to tighten up the low B string: very usable down to the D, but a little loose below that note.

Plays fingerstyle really well: thick and rich and fat and yummy.. Mine doesn't handle slapping as well as I'd like, but that may have more to do with setup.
I play through a Trace Elliot Commando 15 and a Hartke 3000 / 4.5XL set. I generally play the bass with flat EQ (only a 2-band) and play with EQ on the amp (though I'm often flat there, too). Love the thick, rich sound and the sustain.

Perfectly straight neck. Action light and happy to the gazillionth fret. Easy to play up & down the neck, and mine arrived without having been setup. Well made; in spite of the fact that this is an import, it looks like somebody that really cared built it.

It survives my teenage son, which is saying quite a lot.
After a year and a half, one volume knob has a tad bit of noise if I crank it to 11, but other than that, it's been great. Bolt on neck has never needed adjusting from the factory.

This was a brand new bass. It features a 24 fret neck and a beautiful quilted Maple top. It offers active electronics and EMG-HZ soapbars. The controls are Bass, Middle, Treble and blend. The neck is bolt-on with a rosewood fingerboard. The scale is 35 inch-no case.
Sound
:

The sound is very good for a bass in this price class. The EMG's really do the job for me-I like the high end they offer. I usually favor one pickup or the other as the center blend sound is thin. The B string is very good probably because of the scale length.

Here is where I had a problem with this bass. I had a string buzz on two or three strings around the fifth fret that no amount of adjustment would cure. I am sure it could have been fixed, but who wants to buy a bass and have it repaired at your own expense? I also like low action and found that it was not possible to achive that on this bass. When you consider the price that is probably understandable. I ended up getting rid of the Dean and got a Yamaha TRB-6 which I love.
