The BASS that I own was made between 1999-2000 in Korea. It has 21 jumbo frets and 5 strings with a solid top. It's electronics are a simple with only three knobs, one volume and two tone. The pickup is a fat passive pickup and delivers monster tone! My bass has a blue sparkle finish with the Ernie Ball Music Man body style and pickguard. The bridge is what I call a saddle type and is very nice! The neck is pretty thin for a five string, way thinner than a fender 5 string!

Sound : 10
This bass sounds so good! I'm a big fan of passive pickups and I love this bass' pickup. It has great tone and is very loud! I play rock/blues/jazz and it handles all of that well. I'm not that great at playing funk, but it would be a great bass for slapping and funk. The sound is rich/full but can also be tweaked to be warm or bright. I really like the fact that this bass has two tone controls, the tonal spectrum is endless! I do not record but do play gigs and this bass is great for that.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The action is remarkable, the pickups are adjusted great, the bass contained no flaws. The strings were the only thing I changed when I got it.

Reliability/Durability : 10
This bass will last me a lifetime I feel. I can depend on this bass and I love it! I feel this bass is dependable but I always like to have a back up bass just in case.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I haven't had any trouble and had to deal with customer support.

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing bass for about 2 years. I wanted a new bass and was wanting an Ernie Ball Music Man but couldn't afford one. I looked at Yamaha's new TRB 1005 but compared to this one it wasn't that great and neither was the mexican made jazz basses.

I have a 4 string "StingRay" in the store I purchased in 2000, and if you can't read you would swear it was a music man. Sunburst finish, hard maple neck, and a fat single humbucker; fit, finish, sound, and playability compares well with music man.I like it better than the fender offerings.

Sound : 8
Unfortunatly I personally prefer a darker, thicker sound as I generally play with a pick and this bass sounds like a stingray, bright and in your face. I play a thunderbird through an ampeg V4 & 8x10 cab in a HARD rock & blues band. In my opinion this bass is better suited to more of a finger or slap style player. It is not a beginner's instrument!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Over all this thing is truly nice, just not me. Beautiful bass fo a funk, jazz, or country player. Great value.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Built like a "Chevy truck"!You could play the roughest honky tonk with no worries, and look good doing it.

I've always been more than happy with Dillion's service.Thank's John.

I have had my 5 string Dillion musicman stingray copy for I think 2.5- 3 years now, and I still love it. It's natural, and the only thing I can say bad about it is the metal fret divider things, have some rust/green action happening on the metal. I noticed this though only after it has been in my friends basement for 5 months while I was going to school, so who know damp basement or something, but this thing still sounds great, has tight spacing, looks great, and with all the people who have played it and put their fingers all over it, who knows mabye the combination of multiple finger acids have started eating the metal on the frets. But I love the sound. I can get a very nice clean punchy sound, or I can get a very nice low dark grumble, it is very easy to understand, great to play, low B string is solid, and isn't flappy, the other day I was playing and afterwards I was just telling the guys in my band that I love my bass, and they agreed it was nice, some looked at me really weird, but for me that is an accomplishment, I go through guitars and basses alot. But I can achieve the sound I want for just about every type of music, (except I have an acoustic Fretless with Flat wounds for some serious jazz power) it's good for slapping all differnet types of stuff. I saw that Dillion has a jazz bass out now, but it's just a 4 string, I will buy one in a manhattan minute if they come out with a jazz bass 5. What can I say it's been 2.5 - 3 years and I still am talking about this bass. I tryed a stingray, a precision bass, a hamer cruise bass, and a g&l bass and the only one that was as good or better was the stingray, but at $1300, I thought I would just go with the $400 Dillion, my Dad is an economist, if a stingray is a 10 when it comes to sound and a Dillion is a 9.25 the cost to price ratio is much better with the Dillion and you don't have to worry about a battery for active pickups. I give this bass a 9.5 or even 9.75

good for stage or studio, I thump the crowd, and swoon the studio mic or the bass does.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
everything great except the frets themself, but not that bad, love the tuning pegs etc.

Reliability/Durability : 10
live playing no problem. have had to screw the top strap thin back in a couple times, but for 3 years that isn't bad.

Made in Korea, 2000, maybe... 20 frets, 5 strings. GORGEOUS sunburst finish, black pickguard. Two volume, one tone. One humbucker, passive. Maple neck and fretboard, ash body. Bridge is like a Badass. Tuners are Fender style. It has tight string spacing, and no straplocks.

Sound : 8
The sound is really nice. It has a mellow, growly tone. It can be nice a warm or you can kick it up and get a really bright, trebly tone out of it. I know this bass is great for the stage cause its LOUD!! Holy mother of pearl, this thing cranks. I love it because you can get a great loud tone out of it without making it sound all hot and hissy. Thats another thing, the pickups are surprisingly quiet, very little hum comes out of it.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
For the price, its a very well built bass. The action was good when I got it, but since I leave my basses on display in my room, the wood bugged out and the action got higher. None of my other basses adjusted to the wether as much as the Dillion. A few small flaws were in the side markers on the neck. A couple look like they were smudged a bit. The neck volume control was raised a little bit, but it doesn't actually effect adjusting the volume.

The low B string is tight! This is a concern with many people in the market for 5 strings. Its very responsive and plays like all the other strings.

Reliability/Durability : 8
This bass is definitely gigable. The hardware is really tough. Nothing is loose or iffy on this bass. I would feel safe bringing this bass on a gig with no backup. the neck/truss rob might have to be adjusted once and awhile, but keeping the bass in a case would prevent it from changing.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to deal.

The Dillion VMB500 Music Man Copy is a quite a bass for the cash. If you want to dabble in a 5 string or are looking for a just a great bass for the cash, please check out this bass. Dillion really makes quality stuff!

Don't know what year it was made, bought new, recent make. Korean-made copy of MusicMan Stingray, 5 string. Maple neck/fingerboard. Alder body with maple laminated top, gloss natural finish. Headstock has 4/1 tuner config.
I biq humbucker with large exposed polepices. 2 tones, 1 volume. Jumbo frets.
Has what it's supposed to have, so I'll give it the full 10

Sound : 10
I'm primarily a guitar player but record at home and have been through a number of basses including Fenders; just haven't been able to get a nice clear, punchy sound that both cuts through a mix and gives a nice bottom end. But I got a Dillion GoldTop and loved it so much I thought why not give one of the basses a try. So I waited until one came up on eBay for next to nothing...
... it's the answer to a prayer! Great rubbery punch, has a great Rickenbacker meets MusicMan boing to it, with great round note definition and good thunk to the bottom end. I've always been plagued by basses sounding muddy on the low string or strings compared to the higher ones-- not a problem on this. Balanced all the way across all 5 strings, and even that low B has a nice tight bounce to it. The tone controls allow for nice mellower tones, too. I mostly record direct with compression, also a Tech 21 bass driver. Super.
Here's a plus-- the pickup id absolutely dead quiet-- even standing in front of my computer monitor. Wow.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Set up superb, great classic Dillion fret job. Action came low, zero buzzola. Super super easy to play even with my guitar-trained hands. A joy. Assembly tight, finish very nice with no flaws. I've got to fault it a little on the laminate top-- has a real mother-of-school-desk look to it, gives an otherwise beautiful instrument a rather utilitarian look, in my eyes.
BUT... I paid a lousy 250 for it, so I can't fault it much!!

Reliability/Durability : 10
If you can't kill somebody with this bass' sound, it's sturdy enough to kill them using it as a club.

Customer Support : 10
I've emailed Dillion with questions and gotten prompt and freindly replies from Mr. Dillion himself. Can't get beat that.
2-year warranty too.

Overall Rating : 10
I bought this on blind faith inspired by my experience with another Dillion, and from other players' raves about Dillions. And mighty glad I did.

It sounds and plays so damned good, it's given me that great new-musical-toy feeling I had when I was first learning to play guitar 30 years ago.

Buy a Dillion while they're affordable

This bass is brand new 99 or 2000 and was made in Korea. It has 21
jumbo frets on a stiff maple neck. It has a laminated ash top and back
on an alder body with a natural finish. I am going to
have it painted Candy Apple Red by a pro refin guy, Jack Romano.
The finish is fine I just want this bass red. It has two tone and one
volume control just like a Music Man Stingray Bass. Not
sure of the make of the pickup but it sounds just like the Stingray
Bass. I think it could be a humbucker, it sounds very punchy. Great for
slap funk. The electronics are passive. The neck is very
comfortable and very fast. Similar to a Fender Jazz Bass Neck, thin
and round.

Sound : 10
I play rock, punk and surf style music and it is the one of the
nicest playing and sounding basses I own right now. I plug it into a
Trace Elliot with TE 4X10 cab and it rocks the house. The bass
has no noise (other than my playing which has been refered to as
noise). I play every knob on 10 most of the time and it sounds great. It
has a rich, punchy sound that cuts right through the mix. If
I turn down the tone controls it gives me a real low thuddy bottom
end great for hip hop or rock. I like everything about the bass. No
dislikes here.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
The bass was set up at the Kingston Sound music store. When I took
it out of the case I had to tune it up a little. The intonation and
action were perfect. The guitar had no noticable finish flaws
that I could find. When I get the bass repainted I will put in
American Pots and new knobs from Gotoh. I personaly do not like the feel
of Korean pots.

Reliability/Durability : 10
This bass is called the Dillion VMB500 and is solid as a rock. It
will withstand live playing as much as my Fender P Bass. The hardware is
sturdy and the finish I have dinged in a few spots and it
has thick lacquer. The strap buttons are solid but I will replace
them with strap locks. I would use this bass without a backup it is that
good and cannot believe I paid less than half of what a real
Music Man Bass sells for.

Customer Support : No Opinion
The bass has a two year warranty. I have not had any problem with
the bass and I play it every day usually. It is a fun bass to play. I
have gone to the website dillionguitars.com and they have a
picture of my exact bass. I am hoping that they make a JAZZ bass
copy because I will pick one up in a second. My expierence with
instruments is if it works when you get it, and you take care
of it, you will have NO problems with it. I do not think I will
ever have to contact Dillion Guitars.

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing off and on for twenty years and I have owned a
lot of guitars and basses. I currently own, along with the Dillion Music
Man Bass, a 1969 Fender P-Bass, an 1983 Ibanez
Roadster Bass, a 1964 Fender Jaguar, 1976 Ibanez Les Paul Custom,
early 70's Electra Les Paul Custom, 70's Greco Flying V, and I just
purchased a 2000 Dillion 61 Reissue SG copy. I
recently went to Sam Ash and played the real Gibson 61 Reissue SG
and to be honest with you I was disappointed with the action, fit and
finish of the guitar. Gibson necks do feel real nice
though. But the Gibson, to me, was not worth the $1800 price tag. I
paid $499 for the Dillion SG with a hardshell case. The guitar
completely blows away Epiphone and really is a much better
value than the Gibson. I have read that Dillion guitars are
actually made by Tokia Guitars. Tokai Guitars are not available in the
U.S. and I think I know why. Gibson will go out of business if
people find out about these guitars. Well maybe not out of
business, but it will make people think harder if the Gibson is really
worth the high price tag. If my Dillion VMB500 Bass were stolen I
would find the rat bastard thief and give him a Columbian Necktie.
The bass is a Limited Edition. Dillion already changed the headstock on
the website. I did not compare it to other basses. I
walked into the music store, thought it was a Music Man Stingray
Bass in Natural, got closer and saw the Dillion name on the headstock
and thought what is "Dillion"? The guy (Tom) plugged it
in for me and left me alone to play it. I played the bass for 15
minutes and fell in love with the look, feel and sound of the bass. I
recommend trying out Dillion guitars to everybody. They make
nice stuff.
