This is a cheap J-Bass copy made in Korea, if not somewhere even cheaper, and branded Encore, which is a label belonging to the instument distributors John Hornby Skewes & Co. Ltd. of Leeds. As far as I know, guitars and basses of this brand are common in the UK. Mine found its way to Germany: I bought it used from some dude in Berlin via eBay for a mere 60 Euro, as I wanted a cheap bass for basic home recording.
Yes it IS a cheap bass indeed; body is plywood, electronics and tuners of low quality, but working. Finish sunburst (not too thick); neck is maple with a super-thin profile just right for me,personally, and a glued-on maple fretboard. No harm: Fender did do that occasionally, too. The maple fretboard with black dot markers and the white (!) pickgard give a P-Bass look to this one.

On bass, I found I play a laid-back, sparse, groove-supporting style with lots of string preload and sensual slide-ins and slide-outs. That might even be because of this bass: I has a very distinct timbre, almost like a human voice. The neck vibrates with every note I play and colours the sound - nice board of maple. In all settings, it is a good sonic copy of an old J-Bass. Sometime the trashiest copies have a lot of old-Fender-vibe to them, more than up-market models even by Fender themselves.

As said before. Neck, finish and overall result is nice; parts are cheap but yield a nice sound. The only things I might replace are the tuners because of their cheap look, but even they are precise and stable.
