1 pup, 1 vol and 1 tone.Reverse action tuners. Got mine for 512 bucks delivered on ebay. Used, but no damage.

Sound : 10
The depth and clarity are outstanding. Even with the rather light round-wound strings that came installed. I like the prominent, gut pounding sound of 60s Motown (Jamerson, Kaye), and this bass does it good. Played thru a GK 1001 w/4-10 Goldline box reveals everything in an instrument. The tone knob adjusts from deep-down to trebley with no muffle or ice pick distortions. Excellent quality.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Got it used, so don't know about factory settings. However, it came with the strings set rather low, and there's no fret buzz or defective sounds. This looks brand-new.

Reliability/Durability : 10
My first Fender bass, so I would think it would hold up well.

If I knew new then (4yrs ago) what I know now, I wouldn't have so many epi basses. But, I'd still have a Warwick, along with this Fender.

Bought mine from a local dealer.Did have it set up before I brought it home. Looks great even though it is "crafted in Japan". Used on several studio recordings with no problem. The neck is a lot fatter than I'm used to.I slao use a Rick 4001.
Sounds great..has that vintage Fender tone both live and in the studio.

Sound : 4
Plays ok in all settings.Has the vintage Fender P-bass bottom going for it.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 6
Store set it up to make it play easier before I took it home. It's the old "sunburst" finish. Fair job.

Reliability/Durability : 7

Haven't had a problem yet.

I've been playing over 30 years. Love my first bass..a 64 Jazz Bass.Best I ever owned. This 53 re-issue lloks nice..sounds good.. but dealing with that fat neck takes a little getting used to.

I ordered this bass from Musician's Friend. There were some problems with the order in which I was sent a case other than the one I originally ordered. Since I live in Alaska, it would have cost me twice as much as the case was worth to ship it back and get the "right" case. The Bass I ordered was a Sunburst with your normal features. The tone pot jam nut wasn't tight. It was so loose that the only thing holding the pot in was the knob itself. You could actually push the pot into the body cavity until it bottomed out on the knob. The packaging was really bad. The bass was in the original factory box which was shipped inside another cardboard box, sliding around freely. Normally this wouldn't be a concern, but the distance and number of times the package was handled raised a concern. I think this was more of who I bought it from than who made it. The lesson learned here........never buy over the internet sight unseen. Unfortunately, living in Alaska leaves very little choice if a bargain is to be found.

Sound : 2
This bass has good tone with the exception of the E string........really crappy. It defintiely fits the "vintage" sound. There isn't enough adjustment to make it sound anywhere close to what I have come to associate with quality sound.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 1
The bass came de-tuned, which is the only plus when it comes to action. The action was so bad, that when tuned, all 4 strings buzzed from about the fifth fret....up. After adjusting the action to somewhere near decent, the harmonics were way off. The finish was the only thing that keeps this bass in a positive score.

Reliability/Durability : 2
I really don't think I will be using this bass on a gig anytime soon. That's a shame, because I still use my '77 Jazz bass with tremendous sound, when I need that classic sound.

Customer Support : 1
I called Musician's friend to talk about the quality and discrepencies of the bass with no satisfaction. I called Fender, and after talking to several "reps", I figured I would have better luck getting answers from a tarot card reader. Very poor support leaves me with no confidence in any future purchases of Fender products. I wonder if Marcus Miller gets this same treatment? This bass is a cool bass to have in a collection, but I wouldn't dare pull this one out on stage. I think Fender needs to re-organize the Quality Control division of their company. But, "Made in Japan" pretty much says it all. Of course it wouldn't be fair if i didn't score my inability to see the future..................10.

I have been playing a '77 Jazz bass I bought new in, you guessed it.....1977. I own several mid-priced 5-string bassses and have played semi-professionally for about 20 years. I have been in groups and bands that have opened for legend rock and country acts covering a larger geographical area. Although I might pay a higher price, I will, in the future go back to my normal "broker" type bass stores instead of using the internet "savings". I am way to picky about my sound to compromise quality for price, well, at least I have been reaffirmed of that philosophy. I can cross Fender and Musician's Friend off of my future purchase list.
