Mine is the American-made reissue, ash body with natural finish, bound maple neck and board, black block inlays, 3 bolt neck with micro-tilt, thumb rest, bridge and pickup covers, single coil '75 pickups, solid tuners.
9 because it doesn't have noiseless pickups
Sound
:
10
Initially, I didn't like the sound. Straight out of the box it was thin and flat and didn't give me any of that 70's growling vibe. I had the EQ on my preamp setup for an active bass though so after messing around with that, I was able to coax some amazing tones out of this bass. It's smooth and punchy and cuts through very well. It's slightly noisy if you're next to a computer or amp or something, and also if you have one of the pickups solo'ed. I get everything out of it that I wanted though and it's well worth the money!
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
10
Action was a little too low at first. If I played soft I didn't have any problems with buzz, but I have lead fingers so I had to raise it up a bit. Finish is REALLY glossy and doesn't have any flaws whatsoever in it.

I baby all my equipment but I'd imagine this would hold up for decades with minimal maintenance. Everything on it feels solid.

This bass is very versatile and looks sweet. It is a top-quality instrument and is on par with Sadowskys, Lulls, Laklands, etc. I've owned a few other Fenders, a Warwick Thumb, a Rickenbacker 4003, and a few others, and this is my favorite so far. If I had the money, I'd buy again.

89 MIJ 75 RI jazz. relic. bought at the stratosphere on eBay Ash (natural) + maple/maple pearl blocks (beautiful), passive with homemade series/parallel pushpull. pu's swapped to custom shop 60's I had. soon a badass II
my rig is EBSmulticomp+EBSvalvedrive(+EBSbassiq)+ampeg svt3pro+EBSneo12 (great) or ampeg BSE410hlf (v.good but heavy)
Sound
:
9
If it had been possible, I would have had a warmer alder sunburst body, but it's difficult to find in 3 hole. So I went ash: it's a bit trebly to my taste when I play alone (especially when I already have an ash stingray for that), but I suppose it will cut better in a mix too whenever I will again. It's also very heavy (around ten pounds, argh) but the asset is the neck is always erected like a pornstar's.
about the pu's, stock are very good, but I had a set CS 60', so after several tests I swapped them. It was not obvious, but CS are more musical/ midrangy= growly even if less powerful and snappy. I think the difference will become much more obvious with old strings, too.
I'd like an active/passive setup, but not a lot of room in the cavity, and I enjoy the series/parallel option, very useful for rock: for a few bucks, a very useful mod. Anyway, as it is, it did not decide me to sell my stingray yet, which was my project at the beginning. Think I will stick with 2 great basses now, unless trying an active setup decides me. Versatile bass but one can't do everything, maybe. I prefer the JB for pickstyle, equality for fingerstyle (but very different; JB more musical), stingray slaps a lot better (but JB's frets are worn)
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
9
Very good, but doesn't compare to a stingray (does something?) nor maybe a "true" JB. A bit shifting in the neck joint. some buzzing at low action (but frets are quite worn, again). hardware oxydized, but the machines are better than I figured: stays very well in tune. Neck is stable, thin, a joy to play.

1984/1991 Fender Japan 75 RI Jazz Bass.
Advent of the great transferance of power!
All natural finish, pearloid block inlays, maple neck, Ash body {Book Matched 2pc :} and well-played frets are the only stock attributes remaining. All hardware, electronics, and cosmetics upgraded.
While the structural craftsman-ship of these basses is un-arguably superior to the American made quality j-Bass at this point in time, begining in '84 and continuing for a + - 15 year period,
the bridge was (and still is in my opinion), behind the times, the Japanese tuners couldn't hold a tune cupped in both hands being carried by a giant in a bucket,... and although it sounded like a jazz bass, something was still missing... like Rock in the 80's
Sound
:
10
Cosmetically, I decided to go for the Gold, because to my eye it just looks really good against all the blonde wood. So, Schaller Keys, holding a tune no longer an issue. Bad A$$ II Bridge, light years ahead when it comes to Tone and Balance; and a thumb rest installed in a functional position (ABOVE not BELOW the strings!), antique white pearloid pick guard.
Electronically, I acquired some Axctual 1975 RI pots, re-wired with cloth wrapped heavy duty grade cable, high silver content solder. Copper sheilded all cavities, BRASS control plate =), Lindy Fralin pups. Nice Sound.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:

If you have hip/back problems, this bass may not be for you. It is built like a Tank... and drives like one, unless you get it going. HEAVY!!!
I took a lot of time to customize it; Make it what I thought it could/should be, without mollesting it. I had to compensate for past neglect/abuse.
Seriously, the finish is better then that Nitro-Cell-U-Loose Stuff that is being Sprayed on the F* guitars today, this bass is good to go from the factory. Legendary.
If you seriously want to make this bass your number One though, at least get decent Keys on it.
If you can find One 2 Put them On.
Reliability/Durability
:
10
Doesn't BOOM like a P-Bass, but Will do whatever else you want it to, in any style of music. A classic Re-Bjorn.
Don't bother bringing a back-up. You, ...or your rig,.. or both! will quit before this bass does. A Standard.
Strangely enough, Now the twoo volumeknobs will only work in unison without creating a buzz in the system. User error?

Playing 16yrs, Paid $600 for it, additional $400 (because I am driven by the voices in my H/head),... and worth every penny.
Could have gotten a new American made one (why?), could have spent more than twice as much and gotten an older vintage model, (yeah, I know...)
Lots of purists and vintage buffs put theirs in the case and seldom play the g*damn things. Couldn't afford one, who can find them, So... Settle for the slightest bit less if you can with-stand it. Solid Bass.
The new stuff.. is CRAAP!!!

You all know the stats by now, but mine is a 1990 model with the blonde finish, rosewood fretboard with Mother of Pearl block inlays, and three ply pickguard with mirrored control cover where the pickup knobs are. Made in Japan, still all stock with passive J pickups. This one is my first bass, got it at a pawn shop around 8 or 9 years ago for $150 (plus $50 for a gig bag). Because of this I now constantly haunt all pawn shops. A pretty simple instrument, but I love it!
Sound
:
10
I play a little bit of everything, from Irish to Rock, Worship to Reggae, and this bass has held up wonderfully over the years. Jazz basses are reknowned for being pretty versatile instruments. I love the low action, and it sounds great either through my Peavey Head and Mesa 2x15, random store amps, but I think a PA kind of kills the character of a bass. It has a pretty warm growl and great overall tone, but doesn't thunder like a P bass. Sounds great while recording, especially with worn down nickle strings.
Action, Fit, & Finish
:
9
I have no idea where it came from or who else owned it, but the action and set up have been perfect for me since I got it. The electronics do give me the occasional buzz and crackle every few years, but it is usually a pretty cheap fix. The neck on these things is incredible! Very thin and quick, but the finish can get a bit sticky if your hands sweat a lot.
Reliability/Durability

Again, for the 8-9 years I've had the bass it has been a workhorse and done it's job well. The hardware does dull some, so I'll try Barkeeper's Friend (the stuff to make stainless steel cookware shine, get it at Walmart) or something to brighten them up. The finish and strap buttons are great, just a few dents and scratches here and there. I have always used it at gigs without a backup, mainly because college didn't afford me a whole lot of spending cash. Incredibly dependable!

I love this bass! I would never sell it because I love the sound, the neck and the fact that it is my first. If it were stolen, I would be devastated, but eventually I would get another bass. If I could get a deal I would get this exact model, but if not I'm always open to other possibilities (Warwick, Tobias, Ernie Ball). It would be nice if it had active electronics, but that might hurt it's vintage vibe. If you're looking to play metal, I'd suggest a P Bass. For the versatile player, I'd recommend giving this bass a serious look. Good luck and Happy hunting!

Suits my style which is 70's funk, r&b, jazz, rock stuff. All the funky jam which this bass does really well. I use it right now with a SWR Workingman's 4004 Head and 4x10T Cab but am getting a Ampeg V-4BH Head and SVT-410HE Cab. IT sounds great on any setting. Sounds like your cool 70's jazz bass. Verdine WHite from Earth Wind & Fire played one, and that's what it sounds like.

The factory set it up pretty well, i did a better job when i got home. You can't expect it to come ready to go. It goes through different weather changes and lots of moving so you're gonna have to set it up yourself no matter what. Other than that, great craftsmanship, no problems.

IF this was stolen i would definately buy another one. I love this bass, and it solved my search for the right bass.

Made in the USA. 2004 manufacture. Standard jazz bass features, ash body, maple neck with black blocks black guard and standard passive VVT controls. Nice black Tolex case. I put a Badass II bridge on for that 70's vibe, but you don't need it, it is just a question of taste (and a reversible mod in any event).
Sound
:

This does the funk thing so well, it's scary!! Strung with DR low rider stainless strings. Front pickup is warm, beautiful, equal volume on both gives that Marcus Miller type "bink" and extra emphasis on the bridge pickup with the tone rolled off and you get the classic "you know who" warbling tone. It is a joy to play on gigs. Some people complain about Jazz basses getting lost in the mix compared to say a P-bass. No such problem here. Usually used through Eden amps and cabinets.

Shop set it up for me, still gets a fiddle from me from time to time. Typical jazz bass neck that needs tweaking with changes in weather etc. Easy to do as the adjustment is bullet-style at the headstock. Better than having to take the neck off all the time! Fit and finish are really great, especially for a Fender! Beautiful ash grain and gloss finish. One of Fender's better efforts in my view.

This is a 'Crafted In Japan' model from between 2002 and 2004. It has an ash body in 'natural' finish with bound maple fingerboard, block mother-of-pearl inlays, three-ply white scratchplate and US made 'vintage' spec pickups. I have swapped the stock jazz knobs for chrome P-bass ones and fitted a neck pickup cover for that Marcus Miller look. It looks fantastic, feels superb, and does everything a bass should.
Sound

I am primarily a guitarist, but have played bass for around ten years on a casual basis in various big bands, worship bands and jazz/funk/soul groups. I generally play jazz/funk/soul music, and listen to bassists like Jaco, Paul Jackson Jr, James Jamerson, Louis Johnson, etc.
For practice I play through my 70s fender twin reverb as I don't have a specific bass amp, although I'm hoping to get an Eden Nemsis 210 as I've played it through one of these a few times and the sound is incredible.
I can honestly say it is the nicest sounding bass I've ever played. Pure funk and soul which can go from deep & round to nasal & growly to light & springy to sizzling & slappy. It is great for playing chords, slapping right up to the octave, and each note is full of harmonics.
I am 200% happy with it.

2002 US '75 jazz reissue (1 store tag reads '70 ?)lake placid blue with matching headstock. It has traditional jazz features, except the neck: three bolts, micro tilt adjustment, binding, and mother 0f pearl inlays! (also, NO dead spots)
it came with a deluxe case, strap cord, and vintage pickup & bridge covers.
it could have had more features-(straploks, 4 bolt neck, but that wouldn't be true to the original)

the value on this bass is excellent. i think the store may have had it for a few years. it's a 2002 bass and i bought it in May of 2005.

Teamed up with my Ashdown gear, this baby can go from a floor-shaking reggae growl through to a clear funky slap. After all, this is a Fender Jazz and I bought it for 'that sound', the one only a Jazz can give you, but it's so much more than that. I've played a US version of this reissue and didn't notice any difference in sound quality.
Once I heard what this Jazz could do, I sold my Status bass because it sat in the cupboard gathering dust. OK, it's not on a par with a Goodfellow Bass, but if you're serious about your bass playing, this Jazz is a serious contender.

The bass arrived second hand and the neck buzzed. I discovered that the previous owner had loosened the neck bolts for it's journey from the US to the UK. I was very lucky to get this from a guy on ebay who had no idea what he'd got. I paid $600, which is about #320. If you get a chance, get your hands on one of these and you'll thank yourself for ever. Why pay almost $2000 for a US version when these babies are out there at a fraction of the price.
Anyone who tells you the US version is so different in sound/value to the Japanese build one, has bought into the great "other people say it, it must be true" trap. Play the two side by side and make your mind up. I did !!!!

Its a USA 75' reissue, I played a japanese model which was nice but the US there is no comparison. The pickups suit the bass just fine with classic fender tone. The best part of this bass is it is it very balanced and light weight. I slap a lot and this bass is great for slap. It also looks very cool with the natural finish and the black block inlays.

I play jazz, blues and rock with friends and everyone give this bass a thumbs up in the sound department I however this this is were i may make a change in the future. Its not it doesnt sound good but a set of noiseless or emgs maybe better. I play out of a fender bassman 100 watt and it sounds good. Fender '75 Reissue Made in Japan Jazz Bass. Solid maple neck with pearl block inlays, 2 piece light ash body, black finish (custom-shop i suppose). Classic Jazz Bass specs with Vintage USA pickups. Bullet rod adjustment, never mess with that.

Well built, nice frets. Crappy bridge though. Low action that makes your attack noticeably. The bad point in here is the balance of the body, the maple neck is simply heavier than the light ash body, not very confortable, im thinking about put some extra weight in the body, but i dont know how yet.

Im going to buy an original '70s jazz bass one of these days, i'll need a big bag of money. But this bass is good, the bad points are the tuners and the weight balance of the body, but this is not so important to justify the exaggerated price of four times expensive USA made reissue. The case? I also prefer much more the sound of this bass than the three times expensive American Active Deluxe Jazz Bass. Nice bass.

I have been playind bass, and teaching for over 15 years. I play what ever the gig calls for, but mostly blues, and jazz. I was really on a hunt for the bass. And I think I found it. I wish Fender would just charge less money for it. But they have to make a living too.

Its a J bass what else is there to say bought from first owner 13 years ago and have beat it ruthlessly since. The finish is almost gone, the chrome on the hardware is toast, the board has dishes in it, dropped, dented, and I wouldnt give it up for anything.

Sound is great had the pickups rewound several years ago gave me a bit more accurate bottom whomp I really like. Play it thru a modified blackface bassman head and a dual showman 15 cab.

setup when I got it was a bit worse for wear. Had it refretted and lapped when I got it and refretted and lapped 2 years ago. The sunburst finish is barely hanging on. None the less is still very playable.

Ive been playing for 15 years 12 have been thru the same setup. As a jazz player I hate to mess with the sound once I got it. Have tried other basses over the years but always go back to the J. With ground wound strings and slightly hot pickup it has an always intune acurate bottom end punch that would make Ali jealous.

Fender's now discontinued '75 Jazz Bass in its 'Collectibles' series
really should have been called a '76, as according to Molinaro and Black's 'The Fender Bass' an Illustrated History, the smaller logo
and tuners indicate that year.
That apart, this is one very good Jazz Bass indeed, and compares most
favourably with its US made sibling, not to mention that this Japanese-
made bass costs about 40% of the price of the American version. As neither is an authentic '75 anyway, so what?
I live in Ireland and acquired a slightly used (near-mint) specimen
for c. $600 last year. It has a carefully bookmatched three-piece
ash body which is beautifully grained, and, in true 70's style, has a smallish contour at rear. It is not so heavy. A friend of mine has a '78 US J-Bass which is exceedingly heavy.
The neck is maple with a skunk-stripe and the bound rosewood board has pearlescent block markers, with a 'bullet' truss=-rod access.
All in all, a very well-built Jazz Bass that looks stunning.
Soudwise, it has a powerful output for a passive instrument and all the usual Jazz tones are there. The tuners are prone to slippage
and are this instrument's Achilles heel. It does require regular checking of tuning on a gig, but a retrofit of good quality tuners is not so expensive.
The point here is that the Japanese instrument
approaches the quality of the US-made bass. To bring the Jap up to full US spec(case, bridge covers, etc.), would still leave it far short of half the price of its US-made sibling, bearing in mind again that neither bass is an authentic '75. As reissues both are excellent.
So you pays your money and takes your choice.

Made in Japan. 3-bolt neck-joint construction (with micro-telt adjustment). Body: ash. Basic features are classic: 20 frets, 2 single J-pickups, 3 (2 vol & 1 tone) knobs, bridge (top-load) and so on. Fine perlaoid rectangular block inlays (including the one at the 1st fret). The neck is thin enough & comfortable(unlike the necks, most Precisions have). This model is made in two fingerboard versions: maple neck+rosewood fingerboard or one piece maple. Also only two colors are available: 3-color sunbirst or natural (ash). Mine has maple solid maple neck & natural color. The body consists of two parts, one is about 7/8 of the whole body (unlike the other two basses in the shop, which had three parts). In fact, I wanted a rosewood fingerboard, to have a "contrabass"-like sound. But when I tried both basses, model with maple fretboard appealed to me most. It has more punch in the sound, nice highs.

The sound is bright, very punchy. Good for slapping & popping, soloing with bridge pickup switched on & for rock or swing growl with neck pickup switched on. Fender uses medium-thin stainless rounwound strings. If you set "thicker" nickel strings you'll have more bottom -end in the sound. By the way, my friend owns the same model Jazz Bass, which has rosewood fingerboard and a VERY heavy body. These two things perform two totally different sounds. So, try to listen to minimum 2 different instruments.
The electronics is not very noisy, this bass produces a higher output signal than most of the passive basses I've heard.

The bass was set-up well. The action, intonation, string height were set-up just right. One thing: the bridge pickup was set a bit high at its bass side which caused overloading, but it wasn't a real problem to set it right.

It's not my first Japanese-made bass. Well made, very reliable instrument. The only thing I want to upgrade is the tuners. They are poor-made. I think, I'll buy Shaller M4 or something like that. Probably, because this is a vintage reissue of the '75 Jass Bass, Fender uses the same model tuners it used during 70's. No other idea for this subject.

It' warranty is 1 year. But, in fact, the instument usually can be a dissapointment after a year period (after it strugled all four seasons). It's not always, of course.

I'm in music for over 11 years & have been playing the bass for 4 years. Before buying this axe I tried several Yamaha's, Ibanez, Washburn and some other basses. But this one combines a variety of traditional & modern sounds. Very "universal" instrument.
My advice: try as much instruments (for example, 75' Jazzes) as you can: you'll never find a couple of them sounding the same, just listen.
