Aside from its profile, this isnt your fathers Jazz bass! Gorgous laminated, carved top with a cream binding on the body (yes, the finish is prone to show fingerprints & every speck of dust, so keep a clean microfiber cloth at hand). Very sexy, Like a Jazz bass in a Tux.
USA P-J bass pickups (passive), smoked tuners, bridge & speed knobs.
My only "complaint" is its a little neck-heavy, but wont dive, which is good.

Sound : 10
This is where this bass talks the talk.. I have a MIM Jazz bass that I loved, and recorded/performed with for @ 6 years with no complaints... untill now.
The Aerodyne is so much louder, and FULLER sounding then the standard MIM, its astounding! In one practice with the band we all noticed how much better EVERYTHING sounds with this bass. I do plan on switching the stock L bridge for a slotted black BadassII ASAP.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Out of the box the setup was playable, but you must have it set up for you & with youre string choice (i highly recomend Dr Music Marcus Miller strings)

Reliability/Durability : 9
so far, excelent, only have it 2 weeks now, so no real gig action yet.
I would use this without a backup

I've been playing bass in bands for over 27 years and this bass is far and above ANYTHING I've owned or borrowed! The tone, fit & feel are excelent value for the money (i bought this baby on Ebay, $450.00 american)and you can find them in the stores @ $980.00 (shame on Fender for raising prices in this economy).
If this where lost, stolen or broken, i'd replace it with the same in a heartbeat.

Standard Jazz bass configuration except for the P bass P/U in the bridge position. Beautiful finish, rear-routed controls and no pickguard. All black MIJ finish with a cream binding. VERY nice look.

With the basswood body, this bass is at least 3 pounds lighter than it's alder counterpart.

Sound : 9
It's like a "greatest hits" for the Fender bass sound. Although not a pure Jazz or Precision, this bass takes on a life of it's own with the best tones from both basses. You can simply dial in what you need. No BS, just tone.

The stock pickups were a bit thin for me so I threw in a set of Duncan Basslines (quarter-pounders) and I have never looked back. WOW! The basswood body lends itself to amazing sustain. Is it possible to have too much sustain?

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
Don't be fooled by where this bass was made. The MIJ fenders are as good as the USA models with the exception of the electronics IMHO. Just don't buy it if you're looking for the value to go up. This is a player's bass, not a collector's. The later models are made with the bridge flush-mounted which means that the Badass bridge installs with zero mods. Do this.

It's got a fast Jazz neck and decent frets that may need a little dressing if you buy it new. Truss rod adjustment from the headstock makes fine-tuning a snap since you don't have to pull the neck off to adjust. Use a tuner and test after each 1/8 turn. Pitch goes down when you add relief. Use this method and you'll never over-adjust your neck. You may need to add some more foam under the pickups to get them closer to the strings, depending on your style.

The newer models also have the strat-style output jack, eliminating the loose nut issues that 1/2 of the reviewers here have mentioned.

All-in-all, USA quality at a MIJ price. Heads and shoulders above the MIM models.

Reliability/Durability : 9
Gigged with it without backup and never have to worry. This bass is solid and as reliable as any USA Fender.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I do all my own tech work so have never needed to contact them.

Overall Rating : 9
I've been playing for over 20 years and this bass is the best all-around guitar the i have ever owned. I play it through a Sadowsky pre-amp/DI into a MarkBass 2x10 1x15 setup and I have NEVER had better tone. I get comments from other musicians, especially bass players and all of them are positive. I really feel like I am done looking for that "sound" that has eluded me for so long. I play mostly classic rock and some funk and this bass does the job every time.

Crafted in Japan jazz bass with P/J pickup combination. 34" scale. Gloss black finish over cylinder-shape arched top with blonde binding and matching headstock. Jazz body profile, pickguard, control plate and neck. Standard bridge set in routed recess in the arch top. Passive electronics with two volume and master tone controls.

Sound : 9
Sounds great, I use flatwound strings with the P pickup turned up and the J all the way down.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 7
It's a real looker, but don't confuse it with a high-end bass. The neck wood is absolutely plain, unfigured maple. It might benefit from upgraded pickups. It would benefit from upgrade to a heavier bridge, but a BADASS-II BRIDGE WON'T FIT. The bridge sets on a flat platform routed into the arched top. That platform is too small for a Badass brige: it won't go without surgery (ug!).

Reliability/Durability : 8
Seems fine, I've gigged with no backup.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 8
Been playing for decades. Other gear includes Robin Freedom II bass and upright bass. If I had to replace it I'd try to get a higher-end P-bass. The thing I love is getting the P-bass sound with the slim Jazz neck feel.

As listed in reviews below, nothing to add
Give it an 8, due to having 2 pick-ups with quite different sounds, but no actives (great, imho)
And its black!

Sound : 9
This is the reason for me taking time to submit a review.
My band had a radical "re-think" on its direction, from a Motley Crue type sound, changing to a Guns n Roses type. So my sound had to change (was using a 51 P-bass reissue). And was a great excuse to buy another bass.
I`d ordered the Fender Duff McKagan signature model, but it was taking forever to come over. Added to that, I went to see a band whose bassist was using the Aerodyne and was simply knocked out by how great it sounded/looked.
Anyway, choice made, Duff cancelled, Aerodyne arrived.
As per one of the reviews, it was a tad "boomy" on the low G, but I wasn`t too bothered, as, as that reviewer suggested, I`d already planned on installing a Leo Quan Baddass 2 (straight replacement, no mods required). That, plus a change of strings to Rotosound heavy gauge, a new story was to be told.
Basically, Duff McKagans sound was wanted, Duff Mckagans sound was obtained (Duff actually uses an Aerodyne on some of Velvet Revolvers material)
I play thru a Marshall MBS 4210 combo (450watts, 2x10 spkrs) with Marshall MBS 1x15 extension cab - no effects (they`re for guitarists)
This bass produces a sound that fits in with the sound spectrum of the rest of the band, rather than booming away at the bottom, or twanging away at the top.
I`ve also used it in the studio, bizarrely using a pre-set Fender Guitar amp setting, and again, it blends well.
J pickup hums a bit, but thats what J pickups do - can`t criticise it for doing its job as intended!
Gets a 9 here - If it had the Baddass as standard, a 10

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
When it arrived all was good, didn`t need to adjust anything.
Obviously, once the Baddass was installed, coupled with heavier gauge strings, a bit of adjustment required, nothing either difficult or time consuming.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I`ve not gigged this bass yet, but, its a Fender, so live performance won`t be a problem. Like I said, I`ve seen one used for a whole set with no problems.
I`ve had the bass about 3 months now, and used it weekly at rehearsals, and stands up well to the task.
If I only had this one bass I would gig it without backup, no worries, cos I do at rehearsals, tho as I have the 51 P-bass reissue, it would be daft to not take it along, just in case......

Customer Support : No Opinion
Haven`t had any need to contact Fender at all.

Overall Rating : 9
Overall rating is 9 - purely cos I had to add the Badd*** myself, otherwise it would be a 10.
When the guys in my band remark how good a bass sound is, you know what you have is working.
I`ve been playing (ahem) 27 years. Had US Precisions, Mex Precisions, Yamahas, Squiers, Epiphone T-Birds, Gibson Les Paul bass, but this bass is my fave of all of `em. It delivers exactly what I want.
Plus points:
Sounds great, in live/rehearsal/studio
Looks great
Doesn`t weigh anywhere near like a "normal" Fender
Negative points:
As mentioned, Badd*** not included (imho, Fender should stick one of these on all their basses)
Just a cautionary note - I mentioned the sound sits well within the tonal spectrum of a rock band - If yr the type of player who plays for himself, and not the song, and really wants to be heard in addition to the guitarists, rather than creating a platform for them to work on, this bass may not be the right choice for you.
I`m not knocking those bass players, but the job I do in my band is vastly different to that, and for me, this bass delivers, looks great, and doesn`t break my back. Well done Fender.

Made in 2000, i bougt it in 2002. Made in Japan. It has got 20 frets like every JBass and it has a very nice rosewood fingerboard without dots.
Special things: Basswood body, carved Top, very beatuful creme binding, P/J-PUs, smoke chrome hardware, matching head, no pickguard and the resulting rear wiring.
It is black over black - one of the nicest basses i've ever seen.
Altough it was madi in Japan, it included a Fender hardcase.

Sound : 10
Absolutely a great sound for slapping, pick and fingerstyle. Not like a classic Fender JBass but very nice. The sound can be crisp an vintage. I play it thru an Trace Elliot GP11 MkV in a Trace Elliot AH 500X Poweramp. Is sounds like chocolate. Better than every of my oher basses.
I play classic rock and some dirty punk and sometimes some amateur funky jazz - and it suits all my needs.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
As i bougt it, it was already set-up by the dealer - so I can't say anything 'bout the factory set-up.
Great low action. The strings ware bad - but they're changeable. I play Pro Steels now with low D Tuning.

Reliability/Durability : 10
never had problems - build like military equippment.

Customer Support : No Opinion
never dealt with them - so I can't say anything.

Overall Rating : 9
For that price it is one of the best basses one can get.
Great loog, great sound, great action and playability - the only bad thing is, that it has got no pickguard - there are som ugly scratches from ghe pick and my fingernails... but it looks better without!

Same features as a standard Jazz bass - individual pickup volumes and a master tone.

Beautiful black finish that's bound to pick up fingerprints easily complimented by graphite hardware. Binding around body sides is best described as unfortunate.

Passive pickups - split Precision-style pickups in the neck/bass position and a Jazz style pickup closer to the bridge.

Seems to have the same neck profile as standard J bass.

Sound : 3
The bass sounds regrettably plonky and boomy - almost totally P bass in character. Fooling with the controls didn't produce any dramatic changes in the sound.

Adding a BadAss II bridge would probably help the sound a great deal.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 7
The bass was set up nicely out of the box, although the strings looked and sounded a bit dubious. In my time playing it, I noticed no flaws in the finish or the overall assembly.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
The bass' sleek looks are going to show every ding and fingerprint like a postlight was shining on them.

Overall Rating : 5
Very disappointed in this bass. I have a Geddy Lee Jazz Bass and was hoping this would sound as good or maybe even better due to the mix of P and J pickups. Unfortunately, the bass doesn't sound nearly as good as it looks.

As mentioned above, a BadAss II bridge (as on the Geddy Lee model) would probably do wonders for the sound.

You could do a lot worse at this price point, but I'd pass and save my pennies for a better bass.

2003 MIJ Export Model.

Sound : 9
Sounds gorgeous. Chords are rich. The simple controls are deceiving because you can dial in just about any sound. Very punchy through my '78 Fender tube bass amp. Killer sub bass.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
Great action. This bass seemingly never goes out of tune. I can really dig into it for an hour one day and come back to it five days later and it won't be out of tune at all.

Reliability/Durability : 8
Like some others on here I had the input jack fail on me because it kept coming loose and I'd have to continually tighten it up. I soldered it myself, it seems to be OK now. Not a big deal. Everything else is flawless.

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 9
I don't think I'll ever sell this bass. It's just too versatile and easy to play. Plus the tone is so rich and full of depth. I thought about buying a vintage bass but I'm glad I went with this one. Huge performance for a relatively cheap price.

No idea what year it was made, but I tracked it down to a small shop in Cardiff, Wales! Was an 8 hour road trip to collect it! It's the Jap, 4 string, pretty standard, no pic guard, smoked hardware and great black headstock and body. The P & J pick ups give a great range of sound, but with them both up to the max you can get a weird "electronic" buzzing through cheaper amps(no probs with my marshall B150, but some some generic amps have been bad at gigs I've played. I like the 100 gauge e string, but it means asking the dude in teh shop to trade out a 105 for a 100, or shelling out another #5 for another string! As for extras, nothing, but would really like a fender case that comes with it, the guys in my band play gibsons, and you always seem to get a case when you spen upwards of #500 with them, I got a cardboard box :(

Sound : 9
The way I play it with the P & J pick ups on the max, and lots of tone, cuts through a gothic flying V and a classic Les Paul, so power is no problem! Have recorded with it a few times, and in the studio the guys recording were very impressed, the depth of sound they were getting let them do alsorts of cool freak stuff to the final sound. From time to time I play it through an overdrive box, makes it sound a littel more "synthy" but I think that's more the effect than the bass!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 7
Out of the box it plays great! Debated taking to "Andy's Guitars" in denmark street, they did an amazing job with my Epi Thunderbird (honestly, plays as good as the Gibson! Guess I need to thank my thunderbird for the slight floor of the "neck dive" else I'd never had thought about the Aerodyne!) Not got the required c#100+ for that at the moment though!

Reliability/Durability : 6
Had one slight problem, well, I say slight - it stopped working. The output jack hole (sorry, don't know the technical term!) has a nut on it, this came loose, and I hand tightened it a few times... This in turn, twisted the wires inside and pulled them off the solder. The nice guy at Plug Studios Norwich soon fixed it, for free for me (top man!). Simple fix, but annoying problem! I "think" a rubber washer would solve the twisting problem... Apart from that, no problemn at all!

Customer Support : No Opinion
Couldn't be botherd to find out about warranty when I had my problem (see above) It just pays to know a mn who can solder! :)

Overall Rating : 8
It's my 3rd bass, and I don't think I'll ever need another. Been playing since 1999, in my current band (Born Backwards www.bornBackwards.co.uk) since 2003. It gets played through house bass amps, or my marshall B150, without putting the amp through the pa, it's had enough power for a 2000 capasity venue... Looks amazing, and have had comments from other bass players and joe public about it.

2003 Non-Export Japanese Model. Silver Dophin Grey finish, w/ matching headstock, and black pickguard. I thought it was so unique when I saw it... obviously not that unique given that most of the reviews are for the same type. But in any case, a lot of people have never seen a Fender like this one and I get compliments on how cool it looks all the time.

As for features, there's no real bells or whistles here, just everything you'd expect on a Fender.

Sound : 9
If you ask me, this bass is perfect for rock. It gets a nice, even bass tone. The notes are clear and you hear articulation and nuance. You can play it as soft as you need or as hard as you like and it responds in kind.

This bass can be noisy. I'm no expert on such matters so I don't know exactly what causes noise besides bad shielding and being near certain electronics.

Action, Fit, & Finish : No Opinion
The action when I got it was so-so. The guy at the shop fixed it for me though. Since the body is curved on top, the bridge needs to go in the same hill-like fashion, especially since the pickups follow suit.

The neck is nothing special, standard Fender neck. Needs to be adjusted every now and then, but no serious problems. Just don't leave it in your trunk in extreme weather and expect perfection.

My biggest issue here is the input jack. The nut and washer kept coming loose. After tightening it a million times, the wires inside snapped off from being all twisted around. I fixed the wires, and then continued to use my soder gun to soder the nut and washer on to the metal. That SOB isn't moving now!

Reliability/Durability : 8
This bass has taken a beating over the past 3 years. It's been all over the Northeast and survived the cold winter and humid summer. Its taken hit after hit and hasn't given out yet. With such durability, and given the sheer weight of Fenders.. I could probably use this bass as a weapon if need be and then go play a gig afterwards.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never called Fender, if theres an issue I'd say you're better off fixing it yourself or taking it to the local shop.

Overall Rating : 8
Well, I've been playing seriously for 6 years. That's not an incredibly long amount of time, but its enough for me to have owned a few basses. This is by far the best bass I've ever had. No matter where I go, people love the sound, look and feel of this instrument. Its become almost part of my musical identity.. the way people look at Paul McCartney and the Violin Bass; although I'm nowhere near that level.

If it was lost or stolen... I'd probably try another bass, just for variety. But, as long as I have this one... I'm using it!

Features : 10
MIJ, 2003 (I think)
4 string, 20 fret (medium)
Standard VVT controls
Neck P, Bridge J pickups, Fender-made (so I assume)
Passive electronics
Neck is maple with a walnut? or rosewood skunk stripe and rosewood board, side dots only... the body is... light.
High gloss black finish, slightly carved with cream body binding... a very nice effect.
Body is Jazz with a twist... it is a carved top... with no control cover plate. Again, a very nice visual effect.
Bridge is a basic vintage satyle Jazz, not the best but still a good one.
Tuners are stock, but very nice. All of the hardware is pewter finished... this is a very nice looking instrument.

Sound : 10
I keep it tuned down to D-G-C-F, It sounds very good... nice gutteral growl. I play a variety of styles, from punk/hard rock to metal to gospel, and just about everything in between. This bass, along with my 5 string Raven RMB500 handle it all.
I play though a Crybaby wah, (not the bass model) Carvin R1000 and usually an Avatar 4x10. This bass sounds awesome DI'd straight to the board, too though.
Ive noticed a little single coil hum on the J pickup, but its not singnificant. I may change the Pickups out, but not for a while.
This bass has a versatile sound, due to the P-J combination, so you can get just about any tone you want from it. Add in the dropped D tuning and you can really rumble.
Ive used it equally well in the studio and live, like I said earlier it DI's very well.
I havent found anything I dont like about it overall.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
I bought it new at a music store, but it had been damaged very slightly when a rack of guitars fell from the wall. It had a couple of small chips in the finish, but nothing major. It was set up perfectly when I bought it (a very big selling point.) It is still set up perfectly.

Reliability/Durability : 10
This is a very solid bass, light, but well built, so it will (and has) held up to rigorous use. The finish is thick and tough, prone to scuffing and fingerprinting though due to the high gloss... keep a polishing cloth handy in your case.
The strap buttons are good, but I will likely order some lockers... because I have them on my other instruments.
I always bring two basses with me, not because I need a backup but because I switch back and forth... but if i had to, I would trust this one to stand alone.... although, shortly after I bought it, I had some trouble during a sound check, discovered that there was some loose/broken wiring on the tone pot... but I was able to bring it home and solder it up and be back in tome to start the show... I'm not sure if that problem was due to the falling gutar rack or a factory problem, but it is fixed now, and I went through the rest of the wirng thoroughly to make sure it wouldnt happen again... so it went from a 7 to a 10 in this department...

Customer Support : No Opinion

Overall Rating : 9
I've been playing bass for 9 years, guitar a lot longer.
I would definitely replace this bass with another like it. I will also probably buy the aerodyne tele too... I just like the style.
Over all there is nothing not to love about this bass... it has the PJ setup I love, it looks and feels awesome, sounds even better.
I do wish it had come with a case though.. or even a gig bag... I had to wait until I could afford a decent case, which stressed me out a bit.
There are better basses out there... but not many for the money.

2003 Fender Japan Aerodyne II; 4-strings; "dolphin gray" finish w/matching headstock (somewhere between middle gray and a deep charcoal); cream binding; lightweight basswood body w/arched top; countersunk chrome vintage bridge; rosewood board w/20 medium-small vintage frets; one piece maple neck (with a very sensual satiny finish - a joy to hold); chrome control plate w/chrome skirted knobs; P-J passive pickups; BWB pickguard.

The body is super light and comfortable (though like any jazz bass a little on the large side) - the neck feels dreamy, like your lovers wrist, and the chrome hardware shines from a mile away.

Sound : 10
Great tonal variation and a very sweet sound with incredible sustain - I'd put it up there with a ric. I like to play it soft and melodic and it's such a gentle beast, I barely have to touch it and it sings. The pickups are powerful and it sounds great loud, but it's also wonderful for quiet playing at home.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
It's very precisely put together - a stunning instrument. My only complaint is very minor - that the finished headstock had a small chip in the paint when I bought it. With a polished look like this any damage really shows - so you want to be gentle with it. And the body is light, so unlike a Fender p-bass or a Gibson Victory this bass won't make a good over head weapon for bashing in skulls - but it will make terriffic music.

Have I mentioned how much I love the neck? It's very solidly bolted on but finished so smoothly it's really a joy to hold and slide up and down on. I'm not much of a gearhead - I really go for the vibe of an instrument - and this bass feels to me like a bigger more refined Fender Mustang with Ric flair.

Oh, and the chrome is super shiny. I feel like I have a tricked out Tokyo low rider in my lap when I play it. And I love the way the body resonates - for such a light instrument it carries the vibrations beautifully. Oh, and the tuners are so smooth and precise. I'm in love.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
Very solid with a very straight neck, and very new looking even though it's 2 years old. Aside from the paint chip on the headstock it is pristine. I've only had it 2 weeks, so I can't really vouch for durability though.

I love this guy! I feel like I played all the vintage basses in NYC before I finally got this guy. I first played the Aerodyne (though it was a 2005 American Market model in the black on black pickless design currently available) when I was looking at the custom basses at Manny's Music - the salesman suggested it as a step up from a Mexican p-bass, and I fell in love with the sound, and would have bought it on the spot if it had had fret markers. I'd also been flirting with some late 70's Guild basses, some rics that were way out of my price range, vintage Mustangs and the Japanese made Mustang bass re-issues and a few late 70's Gibsons. When I found the Japanese market Aerodyne with fret markers, I knew I had to have it. This guy has the sweetest tone, sits in my lap like a tuxedo cat and purrs when I touch him. He's big (I'm 5'1"), but he's gentle, and I love him.

2004 Japanese domestic model.
4 string Jazz bass.
20 lowprofile frets.
Arched top solid body (Basswood or alder?).
Japanese domestic market only (non export) model with 3 layer black pick guard and Chrome control cover plate.
single tone control, 2 x volume (one for each pickup).
Jazz bridge, Precision neck passive pickups.
Gun metal grey with cream binding on the Jazz profile body body and colour matched head stock.
C style bolt on slim neck with satin finish.
Countersunk bridge.
gigbag included.
Stunning modern appearance for a perennial favourite.
Not a lot of whistles and bells but those that it has it has them with quality and class.

Sound : 10
Being played with, and wel suited to, everything from American rock (Springsteen, Cougar) to indi pop (REM, Ocean Colour Scene, Stone Roses) to punk (Clash, Pixies, Ramones).
Played through UK made Series 6 TE head with Ampeg 4x10 and 1x15 cabs) Boss ME50B and US made Bass Balls pedals.

Some hum when using only the jazz pickup with the tone all the way up - reasonable level and not an issue.

The sound is incredibly versatile giving pure punch and growl just like a Fender bass should. This forfils my last missing "essential sounds" in my rig ( the Fender J & P basses) Mixing the Jazz and Precision pickups ads even more tonal variations. With some esperimenting with pickup ratios it can be made to suit any sort of energetic music - rock, blues funk, soul, R&B and yes Jazz. Not as warm and fat as a Music man but in Jazz pickup mode and tone rolled to 20% it has good mid range and "sings" as good as my Rickenbacker.

Punches above it's weight. Very enrgetic and pounding.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
action set up was perfect from the shop.
The Jazz bridge sat a little proud on the low E side and I kept touching the strings on the pole peices when I was digging in hard- nothing that a couple of turns didn't fix.
no faults or complaints with any of the hardware at all except the bridge, neck fit is clean and tight.
These guys must live to make quality guitars.
BIG issue for me though is why this isn't fitted with a quallity cast or billeted nickle or steel bridge or individual string anchors I do not know or understand - IMHO the "L" profile Fender bass bridges should have been killed off 30 years ago and only revived for specific retro/reissue model basses.

Reliability/Durability : 9
Light basswood body and thin neck may affect longevity (but makes for a excellent all night jam session instrument) but the build quility is so high that treated with due respect it should last. ( I case my guitars in ABS cases (SKB or similar) and use strap locks and SO SHOULD YOU! respect your tools people)
I would use this without backup no problems.

Customer Support : No Opinion
lost my warrenty the minute I left Japan so no support but I doubt it will ever need it - I know enough guitar techs I can trust to not make this a major issue

Despite costing less than a quarter to a third of the price of my Rickenbacker 4003 and my MusicMan Stingray this bass more than holds its own. Compared head to head with US/Mex basses it more than stood up to the challange.
This will be replace with the same (if possible) if disaster strikes.
It is a total package of class and pure essential Fender Jazz and Precision tone thogh the modern style body/finish is not one for the traditionalist Jazz bass buyer.
Light weight for all night giging/jaming.

I don't like Fender's bridge design - this is not a retro bass, it looks and feels modern and is designed to compete with mid/high end Ibanez and Yamaha models yet the bridge is at least 30 years obsolete!!!
A big thing for me is for a bass of this quality to be sold sandard without a basic hard case or at least a decent gig bag is almost criminal (I purchased an SKB ABS plastic case for this as soon as I found a shop with one in stock).

2004 Fender Japan Aerodyne II; 4-strings; dark metallic grey finish w/matching headstock; cream binding; lightweight basswood body w/arched top; countersunk chrome vintage bridge; rosewood board w/20 medium-small vintage frets; one piece maple neck; chrome control plate w/chrome skirted knobs; P-J passive pickups; BWB pickguard. Not many frills; just a slightly pimped-out standard Jazz bass w/neck P pickup and light body.

Sound : 9
Sounds great; P PU sounds like Precision; J PU sounds like bridge-position Jazz; no real surprises. Good note articulation; harmonics come easy with J PU. Lots of variations achievable w/volume knobs alone. Instrument is resonant acoustically; can sound huge if you roll off the tone. Light weight =/= light tone. Minus 1 point for single coil noise; single coil noise should have been abolished in 2000 IMO.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
Pretty decent setup for the money. Binding isn't completely perfect, but as good as I've seen on a Far East instrument at this price; nut slot for A string is cut wide, but misshapen nuts seem to be commonplace for all Fenders, including the $$$ ones. Frets are well polished and seated; not many filemarks noticeable. Hardware is secure; cavities nicely routed. Finish on body and headstock is flawless; board is a nice piece of rosewood. Neck is nice and fast, w/finish somewhere between satin and the full poly coat. Neck pocket isn't the tightest, but it's up to Fender's usual spec.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
Skinny necked Jazz basses give me pause about durability. It'slighter than the usual J bass (though not ligher than some of Fender's current offerings like the Urge II or the Zones). There's still enough heft there to be reasonably confident of its durability though. As I said, the hardware seems relatively solid; also it's passive, which eliminates another potential reliability issue. I wouldn't have trouble playing it in a live setting; that says as much about the price I paid as about the quality.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Fender has customer support?

Overall Rating : 9
Guitar Trader is giving these grey ones away; dunno how they got their hands on them in the first place; they're supposed to be Japan-only non-export models. At this price, this bass is a good bargain; you get something slightly better and lighter than the Standard Jazz for about $60 more. It sounds good and looks cool too. My name is Semicolon-Man, and I endorsed this message.

This is a "Crafted in Japan" instrument. I guess it was made in 2003 because it is a brand new model. this is a 20 fret 4 string bass with a solid top and a beautiful black bodie with a cream outline. The three controls follow the basic jazz set up with a volume knob for each pic up and a tone control for the both of them. There is no swith. The pick ups are passive. Precision at the neck and a Jazz at the bridge. I think the pickups are standard Fender pups because of the sound that comes from them. The bodie is basswood and the neck is a one piece maple with a stained RW fretboard. NO dot in lays. The neck feels very comfortable and it is a modern c- shaped neck. The bridge is a standard bridge and the tuners are standard. Along with the control knobs, all the hardware is smoked chrome. Very cool. This bass came with no accesories, no tags and no booklet.

Sound : 10
It is best for blues, rock and Metal. Ive a Peavy Basic 112 that sets it all up. the Jazz pup is noisier than the p pup.The classic fender tone is bleeding from this bass and really thats what got me over the infatuation of the Name and looks. The only dislikes I have is that the nut seems to be a white plastic whareas my Ibanez has a black nut. I just seems cheap. It may not be.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
The bass was set up perfectly from the factory with the action being great and the pickups fine too. The fret wires could have been filed a bit better but it was no big deal and the nut slot for the A string was cut slopily but again its not that big a deal.

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
I cant answer any reliability questions due to my lack of experience and the fact that the bass has no track record.

Customer Support : No Opinion
NO experience with the company or its customer support.

Overall Rating : 10
Ive got a whopping 2 years of experience and I own an Ibanez soundgear sr 300 dx. I wish I owned a Bassman 100. I love every thing about the instrument. My favoite feature is the tone. The Mark Hopppus Bass did nothing for me and a few other P basses did nothing either. Fender has the nicest looks though. They remind me of Cadelacs. I wish I wasnt such a sucker for a brand name

Mine is the non-export model with a pickguard, chrome control cavity cover, chrome hardware and those silly fret dots that I like so much. The rest of the specs are the same. I give it a 9 in this category because it's not active.

Sound : 10
The sound is great. I received it on a Saturday morning and used it over my American P bass on a gig that night. It's big, bad and ballsy. I use it with a Hartke 4000 head and the VX series 115 with a 410 cab on top. BOOM! I figured I would replace the Fender Japan pups but I am reconsidering that because the sound is very good. A great mix of P bass and J bass. Very cool sound with great clarity if you want it or warm pounding deeeep bass. I haven't noticed any excessive noise out of the P or J pup.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
Like I said. I used it at a gig the same day I got it. No tinkering was done and it performed beautifully. The string height was fine, pup height was appropriate. The finish is nice but fingerprints love the black finish. My only gripe is with the strap buttons. I recently replaced the originals with Schaller strap locks and the screws immediately stripped going into the body. The fix is a toothpick shaved lenghtwise and inserted into the hole first. I rate the action, fit and finish as a whole as an 8 because of the stripped screws (actually not the screws but the holes are stripped) and the gloss on the finish seems exceptionally vulnerable to small hairline scratches. Other then that the bass feels light (wonderfully light!) yet solid as a rock. Nice job!

Reliability/Durability : No Opinion
I have already gigged with it and will gig with again tomorrow night. I will use it all night but will have my P bass with me so I'll have a back up. However, after I sell the P, it will be my one and only and I feel like it will do just fine.

Customer Support : No Opinion
N/A. It's the non-export model so warranty service means I'd have to send it to Japan for work. Not bloody likely.

Overall Rating : 10
Overall this is a completely killer bass for Fender lovers. It combines the best of P and J basses, plays itself, looks extremely cool, much better looking than the export models without the fret dots and pickguard. The chrome hardware is killer with the black finish. It looks like a 1950's black Cadillac...no kidding! And for the price it can't be beat. Ishibashi got it to my door in 4 days...from Tokyo to South Carolina!! Beat that! Get one, you won't regret it!

Mase in japan, 20 frets. doesnt have those silly fret dots which i like alot. 4 string. I also like the volume knobs for each pickup. Also having the tone knob down or up makes it sound like two totally different basses. I initially picked this bass to try out for the look. i was at Marshall Music of Lansing looking at recording equipment when this caught my eye. after playin on it and hearing that it sounded great i bought it. I got the guy down to 550$ so that was sweet.

Sound : 10
Fits me perfectly. I do alot of chords on the two high strings and its great for that. i can get it to sound really bright but also little warmer and darker too. thats where that tone knob and the volume knobs come in. its a very dynamic bass. having some buzzing with the g string but i really pick that mother hard sometimes so its more me than it is the bass.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
came to me in beautiful shape.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Ive already gave this bass some abuse with my playing and it seems to be holding up good.

2003 model, made in Japan. 20 frets, maple neck with a dark rosewood fingerboard. Side position fret markers only. Basswood body, solid top. Your typical Fender 2 vol and 1 tone for controls. Passive electronics with one P and one J pickup (in the bridge position)

Body is a Jazz shape (obviously), finished in black. The body is bound-I can't remember another Fender guitar or bass that is flat-topped and bound (I'll talk more about this in a minute) Tuners are Fender vintage style, sort of a black chrome finish, as is the basic bridge. Neck is listed as a a medium "C". All I can say is it's comfortable for me, usually playing a guitar neck. It's thicker than the Gedyd Lee neck (now THAT's a neck!) but way better than the Sting Precision (now THAT's a baseball bat!)
Get's a 9--I would have prefered a faster neck

Sound : 10
My bass influences--Geddy Lee, Roger Waters, Sting and the chick from Vixen (just kidding)
I'm running it into a Tech 21 Tri A.C. (using their recommended bass settings) into a small Fender Bassman 25 combo.
Since I'm a guitar guy most of the time, I can't really give a super-detailed commentary on the nuances of her. Not too noisy, but I plan on swappin out the pickups anyway. A 10 here, cuz it sounds great to me...your ears may differ....

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
Wow! I read so often about how poorly Fenders are set up, etc etc.
This is my third Fender bass, and all 3 have been nearly perfect upon purchase. No fret buzzig, etc. Now...all three had been Japenese Fenders, so maybe that has something to do with it. Currently has Fender strings on it...sure, whatever...when they die, I'll throw Roto's on it.
The finish is very well done. Neck fits nicely.
Electronics are well done.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I love the "Reliability/Durability" section. I take care of my stuff, so it will be lasting a long time. So...take care of your gear and chances are you'll be entering 10's in this category. I love guys that tell stories like "I was in the middle of a gig, and the headstock on my Epi Les Paul just snapped in half"...then they fail to mention that they were crowd-surfing at the time, and got dropped on their stupid ass! Jeez......

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealt with 'em....don't know....I hear Fender horror stories though.......

Overall Rating : 10
I have a love/hate thing going with Fender products.
I love their basses, but I hate their guitars. I mean h-a-t-e....I mean like really really hate their guitars. Probably cuz they use pickguards. Pickguards to me say "we were lazy, so we dropped this hunk o plastic on top to cover it up"
So...when I first saw the Aerodyne, I thought maybe it was some 1985 model they experimented with, and discontinued.
I was very happy when I found out it was a 2003! Now...factor in the curved top Jazz body and binding (WAYYYYYYY cool idea), and in clasic black (the go-anywhere, do-anything colour) and it's at a 10. It's very elegant in it's appearance...no fret markers, blackface headstock with silver logo and the chrome-black hardware.
The icing on the cake is that they used the P/J pickup combination! I was this close to buying a second Geddy Jazz, but the Aerodyne looked to have a little more versatility with the pickups.
Fender REALLY hit a homerun with this one....My Geddy Jazz is reserved for playing Geddy/Rush tunes.....the Aerodyne is now my "Everything bass"....
Well done Fender!!!!! Now just give me an Aerodyne with a lam flametop with binding....oh yeah!

2003, Made in Japan. 20 jumbo fretteed 4-string. 1 Split Single-Coil Precision Pickup (Mid), 1 Single-Coil Jazz Pickup (Bridge). volume, volume tone. Basswood, maple neck with rosewood fretboard. Charcoal grey laquered finish with white/cream binding; pewter looking v,v,t knobs.

Sound : 7
Very noisy bass. turn the trble up even a little and it buzzes. Jap electrinics I guess. My other 2 jazz basses do not have this problem. Very bright sound, reminds me of the Geddy Lee model with a litle more rumble cuz of the P-pups.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 6
Factory set-up was adequate. I had it lowered some. Smooth, thin neck. My real gripe with the bass and the reason I took it back was because of the body edges. Normal jazz basses are rounded with a bevelled edge for your arm. The Aerodyne has a slightly arched top, but no enough to compensate for the sharp edges. It killed my arm.

Reliability/Durability : 10
The bass, although lighter than a standard Jazz is seems solid enough to gig with. If you're particular about keeping it shiny, don't buy the black one!

3 years exp. My 5th Fender/4th jazz overall. I still have a 2000 MIA Std Jazz and the MIA 75 Reissue Jazz. If it were stolen/lost I would not replace it due to the comfort factor of playing it. Those edges are deadly to the forearm.

This is a fairly new bass. Made in Japan. 20 fretts, 4 strings. Jazz style basswood body. Some what arched top that looks very cool. P style neck pickup and J style bridge pickup. I think the pickups are active. Volume, tone, tone controls. Don't know who made the pickups, aparently fender. Has a one piece maple neck that is confortable with a rosewood fretboard and medium fretts. I like medium frets than the extra jumbo one's they're putting on all the new basses of other brands. Solid black finish with creme binding that looks very cool. The control knobs are a chrome black, the tuners kind of look the same way.

Sound : 10
I love the sound of this bass. That is why I bought it. It was either a $900 warick corvette or this bass. The fender definetly beat it. I didn't want to even say that but the sound of the bass does not lie.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The bass was actually set up very well. The pickups were adjusted well too. The feel and action of the bass is awsome. Everything was solid and nothing was loose.

Reliability/Durability : 9
This bass seems to be reliable. I might just replace the bridge because it is the most standard bridge of bridges you can get. The finish is good. All of the other hardware is good and solid.

Definetly a 10. This bass has beat out many for it's value. There are neck through scheters for this price but they really don't come close. I have an Ibanez BTB 515 that feels awful. It has something wrong with it that makes the clean sound sound like crap. The action sucks major as well. It has been adjusted many times but it was just designed wrong or something. I love the fender bass because it has a wonderful sound, wonderful look and feels great. I only wish that the hardware was better though ya know.
