This is a 1992 USA-made Fender Jazz Bass Plus V. I am the third owner.

It has two Fender Lace Sensor pickups.

Controls (according to the manual) include a 4-way selection (mute/standby, active w. mid boost, active w/o mid boost, full passive), volume, pickup pan, and treble boost/cut (no effect in passive), and bass boost/cut (standard tone in passive). EQ controls are +/- 15 dB. The original 4-way selection switch was missing on mine and had been replaced.

Sunburst finish, with some chips in it... expected for its age.
The body style is the standard Jazz Bass shape with a bolt-on neck. However, there is no pickguard.

The input jack is on the side of the bass rather than the front. The fretboard is made from Pao-Ferro and has a couple of dents that do not interfere with playing or sound. There are dot and side inlays, 22 frets (not 20) and five strings with a 34" scale.

There is a 9V battery inside the body. There is no easy access and you have to unscrew the plate. I play in passive most of the time to avoid having to change the battery. I'm fairly certain the passive is a full active bypass that doesn't use the battery at all, because I have yet to change the battery. :P

The tuners are non-locking Gotoh tuners that do their job well. The bass can sit in its case for a week and still be perfectly in tune when I take it out again. Also, the tuners are 5 on one side. Much better looking than the American Standard's 4 and 1, IMO.

The bridge is not particularly impressive. Some of the screws have rusted over and that prevents me from setting the intonation perfectly on all the strings. I would also like to be able to adjust the action a bit lower.

It came with its original SKB hardshell case. Some extra-heavy pickups, spare knobs and a strap were thrown in the deal as well. The base was not in good condition. One latch was broken off. It wanted to unfold open and take the interior padding out with it. Not very surprising for a 15+ years old case. Fortunately, I was buying a bass and not an old case. The case was replaced with a gig bag immediately.

Sound : 10
This bass is usually played through a Fender BXR 60, Fender Bassman 100 (early 2000s version), or Peavey TNT 130.

I am playing indie/pop/rock, but this bass can do that much and more.
It can produce VERY versatile sounds and that's where the bass shines. It can be very punchy, very deep, very warm, very bright, very flat, very dark.... whatever!

The EQ settings, pickup pan, and 4-way selection switch are very handy.

The volume knob is a bit scratchy and there is some small background hum, as expected for its age. I'm sure both of those would disappear with a good cleaning on the electronics.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
I purchased the bass used, so I cannot say anything about the factory set-up. I polished the frets and hardware. I cleaned up the fretboard (which has a couple of dents) and put on a new set of strings. The effects of aging were practically reversed. This bass is EXTREMELY comfortable to play.

The action, like I said before, I cannot set as low as I want due to the bridge. The intonation cannot be perfected because some of the screws in the bridge have rusted over.

Reliability/Durability : 9
For a 15+ years old bass, this instrument is well-built from high-quality parts. It will survive live playing and hardware will last. (except the bridge, perhaps :P) The finish is still holding up despite a few chips and scratches.

This is a solid and dependable bass that I would use on a gig without a backup. (Well, already have.)

Customer Support : No Opinion
I e-mailed Fender once for documentation on the bass. They responded promptly with two .PDF files for me.

It was bought used, so there was no warranty involved.
I haven't tried to have it repaired, as I haven't broken it yet.

Overall Rating : 10
I have only been playing bass for a couple of years. I own a Takamine EG530C acoustic-electric, a Fender BXR 60, and a Fender Bassman 100.

This a very flexible bass that is very comfortable and fun to play. IMO, it is better than the American Standard Jazz Basses produced today. (pickups, 22 frets, input jack on side, etc.)

For a 15+ year old bass, this was a great deal -- definitely worth more than I paid for it. This high quality instrument shouldn't be overlooked on the used market.

35 years a player, always bass.as stated, SWR& Avatar, perfect small rig that kicks hiney!I have Fender jazz's.fretted, fretless,a new Squier '70 vibe that I reviewed. And this 5er.If it went missing, I'd be bummed, not a lot of these, more 4 strings of this breed I've seen. It's a ez playing five, great neck, and great tone, and light.I would like to hear from other owners about possible other features. My pre does not feature the bass boost(a good thing)so I think some are a little different.its rare for me to not find dislikes with some quirks.

This is a 1992 model, Fender USA Jazz Bass plus. It has the Kubicki active pre-amp which as well as a pick-up pan and master volume, incorporates active bass and treble shelving controls. Most interestingly it has a 4-way selector knob to facilitate its differeing modes. Pos 1: Passive Pos 2: Active Pos 3: Active/Series Pos 4: Mute. The Active/Series position has been described as a boost on other reviews but in my opinion, the sound indicates the pickups are series wired.
I'm not sure what the body is made from as its covered in red fender metalic paint but the usual jazz bass standard is alder complete with maple neck. The finger board is made from Pao-Ferro and has a lighter finish than rosewood. It has a skunk stripe on the back of the neck too. I beleive it has a standard 34 inch scale with average size frets.
The body is the standard Jazz bass style however it has no scratch plate or control panel. The headstock is the asthetically pleasing Five-in-a-row (which in my opinion is far nicer than 4-over-1)I find the machine heads a particularly pleasing part of this bass, the quality and solidarity of them is unquestionable. They are made by Gotoh and despite looking the same as the ones on my Warick and Status, seem far better to use.
I'm pleased to say that it cam with what looks like its original Fender hard case.

Sound : 10
I play in a variety of styles from Motown/Soul through Acid Jazz/ disco/funk to Stereophonics/Type material I've also been known to do the odd musical too. I don't envisage any musical situation where this bass could lend itself admirably. The best way I can describe its sound would be to say it has a 'Modern Jazz Bass sound'. On the third position, the series position, it has a very Musicman Stingray type sound which could be good for those flea types. I use it with Trace Elliot V-Type series amps, (one 4x8" combo and one all valve V4 complete with Trace Elliot 8x10"). Because the EQ is so efficient, I hardly need to touch it on the amps, flat is great, just a nudge on the mid-range occasionally from that slap/fingerstyle transition. I've done some recording with it and its so clean and 'transparent'. It really is a great bass, I love it... If you see one, try it, like seriously!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
The action was reasonable when it was purcchased however it did need some lighter strings for my liking. I put some new strings and gave my friend steve a ring to 'tweak it to perfection' Its now the nicest playing 5-string Fender I've come across. All the pickups were set fine, no adjustment was required. The pots operate cleanly although finding the centre detent in the bass/treble controls is tricky to find but in fairness this bass is 13 years old. It doesn't bother me, I just turn until it sounds right. The other hardware is in nigh-on perfect condition.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Its 13 years old and still going as strong as the day it came out of the factory. I have no reason to question the reliablity or integrity of it. Its not yet let me down but I see no reason why it ever would, Fenders are pretty tough. There are virtually no marks on it, its solid.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never had to deal with Fender...
The warranty is the 'Lifetime' Fender one but i dont think it applies to me because I'm not the original owner.

Overall Rating : 10
Its quality , flexibilty and sound is on a par with my Warick and Status basses. For the Money, this bass has been very much a welcome addition to my collection... Over the years I feel this bass has been overlooked. It can do most things very well. Strongly reccomended indeed!

American made 1990 Fender Jazz Plus five string bass with Kubicki active circuitry and Lace sensor pick-ups. Stacked Volume and Tone knobs arranged straight across the lower body without the standard plastic pickguard, which include Volume/Pick-up Pan, seperate Bass/Treble and a 4 way selector switch that allows Passive / Active / Active with Boost / Off. Standard 9 volt battery under rear cavity (No easy removal). Cable input is on the bottom of the Bass instead of the traditional location. Since this Bass has a longer 22 fret, the body has a deeper cutaway under the neck reducing size and weight of the Jazz Plus Bass. While not string through body, the heavier duty bridge is better than most. Smaller Gotoh tuners 5 in line across top of slightly smaller standard headstock and 2 black plastic string anchors. Durable injection molded Fender case with Black velour interior (one broken latch).

Sound : 10
The Sound is VERY adaptable! The Lace Sensor pick-ups are quiet and responsive in both Active and Passive modes with excellent Tonality control due to both seperate Bass and Treble knobs AND a continuously variable Pan knob to blend pick-ups.This Bass would seem to be well suited for both Stage and Studio use. The Boost setting on the Active / Passive selector knob has proven helpful during a dynamic change (or filling in behind a lead break) on Stage, as well as the ability to turn the sound off completely without changing settings.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
For a 14 year old used bass, this one was still close to being properly intonated, very little fret wear, no dings and a very durable Black paint job (whick like many other Black Fenders looks Blue under blacklight). Still looks great! Neck is still very well anchored to the body with good relief on fretboard...no string buzz even at low action. All pots were still working without "scratch" and cable input was tight.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Very solid intrument! Nothing at all is loose or broken since they used the best hardware available for the time. Confident enough to use this Bass without a back-up (although I have a Spector NS2 neck-through 4 also). I have a Mexican Fender Jazz 5 (which I'm selling) which I liked once it had been professionally set-up...but once I picked THIS Bass up...the Mexi-Jazz is gone! (and at close to the same money)

Customer Support : No Opinion
Hey....It's 14 years old! Still going strong, so I haven't needed to talk to Fender about this one.

Overall Rating : 10
Hmm, I've been playing (on & off) for 40 years...always ROCK! Heavy Rock...Blues Rock...Alt. Rock...but ROCK! So I play hard and the equipment better be able to take it. I've had a lot of Vintage gear (BEFORE it was vintage) like a '62 P Bass, Alembic Spoiler and Travis Bean, among others that I don't even remember...but this Jazz Plus V Bass comes damned close to doing it ALL! An incredible and underpriced value, if you can find one in original condition. Because it does NOT have a plastic pickguard (like the vintage looking clones) and has the smaller block print Jazz logo on the headstock, I think it gets overlooked....Good for ME! I'd like another one eventually!

I bought my Fender Jazz Plus V new in 1994. It was made in the USA & has 22 frets. Equiped with 2 Fender Lace Sensor pickups, 2 active & 1 passive settings. The finish is a very durable black. Tuners are non-locking Gotoh. Hard shell case was included.

Sound : 8
I play mostly classic rock(some Gospel & some coutry). I use an Ampeg SVT200 with a 115 Peavy BW cabnet. The bass has a good versitle sound which I prefer for studio. Unless you have totally quiet surroundings, it's difficult to tune because the Lace Sensors are so sensitive they pick up other amplified instruments and/or juke box. The neck is ok but not as good as my Samick or Hamer. I used this bass for years in honky tonks. I still enjoy playing it every now & then but my Samick fretless 5 sting plays & sounds so much better.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The bass didn't contain any flaws. It's been used & abused. It fell over one night resulting in a crack in the headstock just below the B tuner. I had a repair shop shoot glue into the crack. It's been 5 years now & it's still holding. The black finish has held up very well. Still looks great.

Reliability/Durability : 10
I've adjusted the neck/truss rod once. Everything else about the bass has held up great.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I've never had a need to call Fender any advice or service.

Overall Rating : 8
I've been playing bass for 19 years. If it were stolen or lost, I wouldn't replace it with the same(even if I could find one). The one thing I really love about this guitar is the electronics. I don't care to much for the neck or the over all weight. When I bought it, it was great. But now I've got used to lighter & easier fretting basses.

Made in the USA in 1992 as part of Fender's attempt (at the time) to create a "modern" five-string Jazz bass. Features include a downsized alder body, 22 fret maple neck/rosewood fretboard, Schaller bridge, Gotoh tuners, and an electronics package consisting of 2 "Silver" Fender Lace-Sensor pickups with a Kubicki active preamp. Controls feature a stacked volume/pickup pan, stacked active treble/bass boost, and a 4-way rotary switch with standby (off), active, active w/ mid boost, and passive settings.

Sound : 10
I've played everything from progressive rock to electronica, and this bass would suit it all. The Lace-Sensor/Kubicki electronics make for incredible variations in tone - from dark R+B to bright and modern, the Jass Plus V has an amazing ability to run the gamut of sounds. Very well shielded - can be placed within 1' of a PC monitor before hum appears.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 8
Bought used, so I cannot comment on the factory setup. However, for a 10-year-old bass it was in *very* good condition, requiring only a light fret polishing, new battery and setup to be prime condition. Electronics were in perfect condition.

Reliability/Durability : 9
Very solidly constructed, this was Fender's top of the line during its run. Hardware, especially the Schaller bridge, is much more durable than the typical Fender hardware. I replaced the Schaller-compatable strap buttons with Dunlop "StrapLok" buttons for standardization with the rest of my instruments, but the original buttons were of top quality.

I've played over 10 years, with my main bass an Ibanez SR-1206 six string as my main bass (until now). I am completely "in love" with the Fender Jazz Plus V, and if stolen would search for a replacement copy on the used market. As a "smaller" bassist, I chose it because of its light weight and downsized body. This is a hidden treasure on the used market!
