Mine is a 1994 with basswood.
I have changed the pickups the Fender US pickups.
However the Japanese stock pickups are OK.
The Plates below the pickups in the review above,
SHOULD NOT be removed. They are not there to
strengthen the pickups but to remove noise.
It's common on many Fender Jazz.

Sound : 8
Mine has a basswood body, this gives a rounder
sound than lets say alder.
The Stock pickups are OK, in fact i was a bit surprised
that they sounded like they did.
I finally change to US custom shop vintage they sounds
a bit clearer. (8 with stock pickups 10 with US pickups.)

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
The finish is very good.
Everything is perfect and solid.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Never had a problem since i bought it 10 yrs ago.

serial No. says '92-'93 Standard Jazz bass design. Alder Body, Maple/rosewood neck/fretboard. Vol,Vol, tone controls. Passive p/ups & elecs. Black finish-very good & white pickguard. Standard(not string-thru) bridge. All else standard.
Now here's the lowdown- I got this 2nd hand thru ebay so I dunno whether the p/ups were original, but they were not sounding great(uneven output on each string) when I took 'em out I found a slab of magnet along the bottom-obviously to either strengthen the weak pole pieces OR WORSE the pole pieces were only metal & not even magnetic at all!!! Sometning I've since found out is common on cheapo p/ups!!! Not something I'd wxpect on a Fender!!!
So I put a set of Seymour Duncan 1/4 pounder Jazz p/ups in her & a Badass bridge & she sounds beautiful!!!!!

Sound : 10
Sound now(after mods) is great! Just sweet! rich, round, chunky, warm, I could go on 4 ever! No noise unless U sit on your amp & only have one p/up on- both p/ups on full act as humbucker & any small amount of hum disappears!! Lotsa variety of sounds, great 4 all the different styles I have to play- jazz, soul, r n b, rock, funk, country!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
As was 2nd hand & I bought the new bridge, I set it up & action is sweet. ALL GOOD

Reliability/Durability : 10
Feels like it'd withstand a war! I use regularly w/out backup. All solid.
