I got a 2003 Fender Mark Hoppus Bass. It was made in the Fender factory in Ensenada, Mexico. The maple neck has a rosewood fretboard and 20 frets. It's got a thick, solid finish (I got mine in surf green!), a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder pickup with a lone volume knob, and a string-through body bridge. Also, a supposedly ugly one-piece white pearl pickguard that I actually kind of like. I bought a hardshell case with it.

Sound : 10
I play punk rock and emo with a pick, and this guitar is perfect for those styles. Hell, it was made for them! The missing tone knob hasn't even been an issue, because the Duncan pup has so much low end. I actually had to turn up the treble on my amp! It's just got this awesome P-Bass sound that is really cool. I think this guitar is probably better suited for the stage, but it could rock in a studio setting as well.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 7
OK, I like my action high, so the factory set up was too low for me. The finish is great! I love the surf green color, it's so retro. The only flaw I found was that the neck pocket is cut a little sloppy; i can fit my .60 mm picks between the body and neck on the bass side, but it actually is handy. Never have to look for picks.

Reliability/Durability : 10
Fender. 'Nuff said. I added straplocks just in case.

Customer Support : No Opinion
Never dealt with Fender.

Overall Rating : 9
I've been playing for three years, and the only other bass I have is a crappy Squier P Bass. This kills it. If it were stolen or lost, I'd probably cry then find another one and buy it. I love this bass. I compared it to the standard P Bass, but this one just had "the" sound for me.I do kind of wish it had the two-piece pickguard. Overall, for the price it was a great buy. I'd do it again in an instant.

this bass is awesome. ive had it for about 2 months and its a real cool guitar. and again from the other posts, fender change the colours and style of the guitar i dont know why but all brands do it. ibanez do the same with the k5 fieldy signature, u can get it in da same colour but u dont get some of the active electronics like he uses.any way this bass is brilliant heavy enough to make it not feel like a toy, the string through body configuration is cool and isnt the same as every other bass on da market. the passive electronics give a nice warm smooth sound but also the bass is quiet which is a bit different from a lot of other passive basses. all around this bass rocks ass blink style

Sound : 10
I play punk rock music and some more heavier kinda music so anything from blink 182 to metallica to nofx this bass rocks abnd as one other guy has said its not very good for finger style playing and tyhe actions not high enough for me for slap playing. but the bass has a lot of warm blooded tone and punch. i have only used 2 effects with this bass through a ampeg 8 x 10 and v-4b head the distortion is quite good really deep and rocky but when i used a synthasizer for more funky stuff it kind of lets itself down but still sounds good.

theres only one way ive found of getting a different sound out of this bass and thats bye hitting the strings in a different area. more bass and punch hit the strings down towards the neck and for more treble playing a lot further back with my hand on da bridge. this is a good studio bass recordfs well and has a clear tone and the stage performance even better.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 9
this bass has a real low action good for jumping around on stage slamming ur pick between the strings, and it helps give the bass the feel that its a lot more expensive than what it actually is. that goes for the frets too and the chunky neck. when i got this bass nothing was wrong with it and nothing still is, I still have the factory strings on it!

Reliability/Durability : 10
live playing is too easy for this bass. its a hefty big ass tank of a guitar and the hardware upholds easily. i always gig with this guitar withoout a backup but when i used to use my ibanez i could never rely on the electronics but with this bass, what can i say, its rules. i changed the strap buttons for fender strap locks and these seem to easily uphold to once a week band practise and 2 nights of gigging

Customer Support : No Opinion
never had anything wrong so i dont know. but it would be cool if fender made it in the puink colour and the green colour with the gold hardware

Overall Rating : 10
overall this bass really out goes itself
its plain, simple, and sounds great. this bass really is for everyone that plays blinks kind of music and stuff a bit more heavier or faster. Basically THIS BASS KICKS MAJOR ASS.

for the guy below, this bass is actually a remake of the original Hoppus "Prototype" bass so to speak, made by Alex Perez at the Fender Custom shop. Take a look at http://www.bassstreet.com/features/mark_and_mike.html

Viola....one piece pickgaurd with no metal control plate. Ok, so it has the skull inlays, but unless you want the bass to be needlessly expensive, then dots are going to have to suffice.

Ok heres the deal. Fender put this out to look like marks NEW bass, the one he uses in first date, NOT his cool bass in the rock show. This means it lacks the cool pink, its some dumb lookin pink. It dont have the chrome conrole panal plate, and there isnt any skull inlays, just the regular dot. but i got my bass custom painted to look like his cool pink, so hahah u guys suck. If somebody who works for fender reads this, do ur company a favor and make a NEW model, with the right color, inlays and the chrome plate. you'll make more money. o yea by the way, for punk/grunge music, this is the PERFECT bass, hands down. any other music, dont waste your money

Sound : 10
for punk music like op ivy, blink (duh) and even nirvana and grunge stuff and stuff like that, its perfect, but for other stuff, like slap music or plucking strings w/ ur finger, its nt good, best played with a pic and stuff ya know?

i give it a 4 for any kind of music, but a 10+ for punk music

Action, Fit, & Finish : 3
action and fit.... pretty dern good... finish, like i said if it came in hot pink it would be amazing, but NOOOOOO fender were stupid and upt it in shell pink, so i give i a 3 cuz fender are retards

Reliability/Durability : 10
all i ccan say here is WOW.... this thing is a freain tank, i banged it like at east 200 times (no exageration at all) and not a single dent or scratch (thats even including the custom paint job i got on it) i give it a 10, wish i can give it more

Customer Support : No Opinion
no clue

Overall Rating : 10
overall. well like i said, if fender made the bass CORRECTLY it would be awesome, but they are doosh bags and did the color wrong and the inlays wrong and didntdo the control plate... HUGE mistake.... o yea also, if somebody from fender is reading this, u should make a billy joe armstrong custom guitar, cuz he's my hero and his gutar is cool, but make sure u do it RIGHT this time, like putting the humbucker on a slant and putting the BJ initials on the pick gaurd and the hole nine yards... but back to mark hoppus.... over all, i give it a 8 (could be a 10) if u play punk... a 5 if u play anything else

This is an awesome bass. no knobs to mess with... except volume. and it cranks out a good sound with its bass-line pick ups. and the pickguard is quit good looking.... too bad they make this in mostly vinage colors.... a black one would have been nice

Sound : 10
I use it with my ampeg. its not like other basses where its just bass. it has a good treble-ish kinda sound

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
No flaws....sounded perfect

Reliability/Durability : 10
I throw my bass around my neck and jump around with it...it takes a few dings now and then but still works as well as the day i bought it.

Customer Support : No Opinion
not sure

Overall Rating : 10
playing for 3 years. No. I get the same bass if it were stolen. I love the simplisity(and how it pulls it off with its good looks). I wish they had it in more colors. i wish it had the skull inlays like mark hoppus has on it

I got a 2002 model just recently, made in Mexico. 21 fret, 4 strings. I got the daphne blue, I just like that color. I like the seymor duncan pickups. I don't really mind the one knob, I never used the tone knob on my old p-bass. Overall it was an excellent buy.

Sound : 10
The sound is perfect for my playing style. I play a lot of punk music. I can't say it is better for the stage or studio, most of my playing takes place in my living room, with the occasional concert.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The set up when I bought it was done custom by the store that I bought it at. So I didnt play it much with the factory settings. The setup the store did was excellent.

Reliability/Durability : 9
This will definately withstand any kind of playing I can do. I may have to replace the strap buttons in a few years though. I would trust it on a gig with no backup.

Customer Support : 10
I haven't had any problems that I have had to deal with customer support with. There is a year warranty.

Overall Rating : 10
I have been playing bass for 5 years, and guitar for 7. I learned on a peavy T-40, which wasnt great. Then moved on to a Fender P-bass. I think this bass is better than the regular p-bass for my sound. I would buy another if it were lost or stolen.

Made in Mexico. Precision Bass pickup & neck on Jazz bass body, that attracted me. Besides it's got a string-thru bridge that I prefer. But I'd rather have a maple fingerboard than a rose one. Seymour Duncan "Quarter Pound" pickup is the best choice I can think of for both bass and guitar.

Sound : 6
Standard Precision bass sound. Even fatter due to nice pickup. Lack of tone control is a bit of problem...because I personally like the sound of bass without a lot of tone. I always turn the tone knobb all way down when the strings are new, but all the way up when they get old. I've played this bass for a couple of month and I can see the sound is clearly getting better.
Anyway it's got a punchy sound and I'm really satisfied.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
No problem. Paint was so beautiful (I got a surf green one) and probably this bass was set properly when it was at shop. I don't know a lot about the quality of Fender Mexico products, but it appears to be good enough. By the way, Fender Japan has a great quality but all the guitars from Japan got really crappy finish on neck. Apart from that I strongly recommend to get some Japan one. They are also way cheaper than US ones.

Reliability/Durability : 8
This bass has a simple system so it should be durable. One good thing is that this so light that is nice for a big performance on stage. But always needs to replace the strap buttons. I recommend ones from Jim Dumlop.
But I can't be sure about truss rod or if the finish lasts.

Customer Support : No Opinion
I haven't dealt with Fender yet.

Overall Rating : 7
I've played for quite a long time and tried out a lot of different type of basses. This one is not as good as Stingray or L-2000 or SB-2 but good enough for us non-professional players. I recommend to buy this one if you are after some Fender USA one because this is much cheaper and you can get an effect pedal with the money you can save, that make the sound way better.

Blink 182 is not that famous here in Japan and many of my friends don't know their name. I used to listen to their songs. I don't really like them now, but anyway I admire Mark Hoppus for making this nice choice of bass for us.

When I get much much better probably I will get one from G&L or Sadowsky. I think Mark Hoppus bass is very good for practice.

I'm happy to answer the questions from whoever read this review. (My English's not very good though)

Beautiful paint job, awesome seymour duncan pickup.

Sound : 9
i play mostly contemporary christian music at my church, and this bass is awesome. on some songs, a little too much "thump" sometimes. i have used both recording and live, and if you can get a good amp and know how to set the EQ, this sounds phenomenal

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
contained no flaws. every bass i get, i take it to the local music shop within a week of purchase to get a perfessional's opinoin of if it needs work. the employee said i made a great decision and that it looks and sounds great

Reliability/Durability : 10
i take really good care of all my guitars. i think the paint job is awesome. this bass is great for live playing. the only thing is the strap button came loose once when i first got it. i just screwed it back in and it hasn't happened again

Customer Support : 10
never got support for this particular bass, but i had to once on my amp, and Fender handled it great.

Overall Rating : 10
i own a lot of basses and guitars. i am only 15, but ive been playing for 4 years and know a lot about quality guitars. the only thing i dislike is that the pickups are sometimes a little to thumpy for certain styles.

This bass, pretty much lacking in features, still is pretty awesome. It's the 2001 Mark Hoppus Signature, which is made by Fender, which in my opinion is the best guitar company ever. The bass has 20 frets, but I wish it had more. I also bought the bass in the Daphne Blue color, and it looks great on the guitar. Came with a gig bag, so I won't complain too much. Only a volume knob, which is really all you need anyway. I love the Seymour Duncan pickups, they're really bright and sound great; no matter what type of music you play. I have no complaints about this guitar, it is definitely one of the best guitars I've ever played.

Sound : 10
The Seymour Duncan Pickups are some of the best I've found in any guitar. Really bright, nice tone, and they sound great. The notes sound really full. BUT, the guitar can be used for any type of music. Punk, Metal, whatever you play. Really, all you have to do is fiddle with your amp. I'm playing out of a Peavey Series 260 C, and it sounds AWESOME. I play everything from Blink 182 to Metallica on this bass, and they always sound great, no matter what. So, basically, this guitar is great all around, in all types of music

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The bass came perfect, right off the rack at Guitar Center. Tuned well, pickups sounded great and full, and there were NO dings, scratches, or any type of stains on the guitar. The Daphne Blue finish with Pearl Pickguard look great on the guitar, and is probably second to none in terms of style. Beautiful guitar, probably the best looking I've seen in a while

Reliability/Durability : 10
This bass could be made to go through Hell and back and back again. I've, accidentally, banged the bass around a bit, but it's held up marvelously. I only have tiny, minute dents, barely noticeable. Nothing has gone wrong with the bass yet, and the strings have held up really well. The finish still looks magnificent, and you can hardly notice fingerprint marks. This bass would hold up great for a live show, although I recommend buying Strap Locks, since it's only fell off the buttons once. I'd probably use this w/o a backup, but just in case, I'd always carry a backup.

Customer Support : 10
Never had a problem, so I'm guessing that they must be pretty good. But, I have had a friend w/ a Stratocaster which had a problem w/ the neck. He sent it back, and Fender replaced the neck and sent him a bunch of complimentary stuff. So, yeah, I'd say their pretty good.

Overall Rating : 10
I've only been playing for a year, and I don't consider myself Cliff Burton or anything of the sort, but I feel that this bass is great for anybody. I learned on an Ibanez, but I love this Fender 100 times better. I mostly do Punk Rock, but I also do some Metal/Hard Rock, and feel that this bass could live up to anything anybody had to say about it. Although, I do want to say, DO NOT buy this bass only if you wanna be like Mark Hoppus from Blink 182. Just look for the bass that suits you. In conclusion, this is my favorite guitar I own, and I think it's probably the best I've ever played

This Mark Hoppus bass I didn't purchase but I played at my local Guitar Center. It was in surf green, also had one in pink which was nice as well.I think by now you all know the critical specs from the other reviews.Very simplistic in features and basically has all you need as far as tone and volume levels.

Sound : 9
Unlike some of the other reviews and everyone is entitled to how they feel I felt as though this bass could cover all styles of playing.I own a WorkingMan's 15 and was lucky enough to test it through the same amp at Guitar Center. The sound was quiet and also had a lot of midrange and awesome punch to it.The SD pickup is all you need not making a replacement necessary.I loved everything about the tone of this bass.I'm not a Blink fan but this bass reminds me of the P bass I once owned and would definitely buy this piece.Very rich and full in tone, definitely!

Action, Fit, & Finish : 7
There were no flaws in the surf green finish,Emmaculate! The pickups were adjusted just right.Did not notice any construction flaws whatsoever. The action was set too high for my playing but any competent guitar tech could fix this problem,so it gets a 7 here.Built like a tank and very comfortable to hold and play.A very fast neck as well!

Reliability/Durability : 9
Being a Fender this guitar can handle anything anyone could throw at it.
